IN THE POCKET | Episode 3: "Quarantine" by MUTEMATH, from the album ODD SOUL.
Hello, my good people!
In this video, I look at the mechanics of the "Quarantine" bassline; the history behind its creation; and the recording process of it. Please note: all of this information and trivia is based on my memory (sometimes fuzzy, sometimes sharp), and it is meant to be all in good fun.

Hey Roy. Just wanted to say Mutemath has been my favourite band ever since the first record. I started playing bass soon after and you have been a huge influence over the years. Thank you so much for these videos! Any chance of Mutemath having a reunion?? I think my heart died a little when you guys broke up haha

@roy this breakdown is fantastic. I would love to see a full decomposition of Odd Soul in it’s entirety. Any plans on adding more tutorials?

Odd Soul is literally my favorite albums of all-time. These instrumental breakdowns just reinforce my belief that mutemath always played the most ridiculously complex music of our time. Thanks for all you do, brother. Looking forward to me of these.

Mutemath carried me out of high school and into undergrad hardcore. Odd Soul is still reigns king as one of my most played albums. Thank you so much for sharing some of your experience and cracking the window a little wider into your process during this time. Cheers and thanks for all the memories and amazing concerts from a still frozen Minnesota.

Hey! I just wamted to say, MuteMath has been a huge inspiration in my own band! Quarantine is one of my favorite songs, and seeing you guys perform live made me want to start my band. Seeing you guys play Cains Ballroom was amazing. You should do a video on Clipping or Stare At The Sun!

Roy, these videos are really good. It's nice to get the inside perspective on the band's creative process, how you approach bass playing in general, influences, etc. It shows that you really are a music lover and dedicated to your instrument. Plus the bass parts are really cool, of course.

Ive read somewhere that all members of Mutemath started out in their music career as drummers (or at least all could play the drums)

I completed tabbing this song literally two days before you posted this! That outro did leave me wondering; I thought I’d counted 20 or 21 bass notes in four measures, but I wasn’t quite sure. Thanks for this! Mutemath is pretty much my all-time favorite band, Odd Soul is one of my favorite albums, and “Quarantine” is my favorite song off the album. I echo the calls for reunion. Paul Meany is extremely talented, without a doubt, but having you and DK there was a force multiplier; Mutemath is greater than the sum of its parts.

Hey Roy, thanks so much for this video! Not so much for the bass tutorial (I'm a drummer) but for the background and influences of the Odd Soul album. Odd Soul is my favourite album of any band for two main reasons: 1) I loved the sound of the dirty bass/guitar riffs combined with the organ 2) I loved the high energy drumming I have been trying to find another band that's had a similar sound with little success, so thanks for listing some of those 60s-70s bands; I've had a listen and already think they're great. I'd love to hear of any other bands you think sound similar to the Odd Soul album. I look forward to following you, Paul and Darren as you all take your separate paths, as you have for 3 years (that went really quickly), and hope you all converge at some point in the future again. Cheers!

Thanks! Other bands you might like are Cream (Disraeli Gears- Ginger Baker has be one of the greatest drummers of all time), Edgar Winters Group (Frankenstein), & Mahavishnu Orchestra (Vision of Emerald Beyond).

Odd Soul and Flesh and Bones Electric Fun are my two favorite of your albums. Just... holy crap. And I would love to see you all get back together. Though as a husband and father, I definitely understand why you and Darren left. Because obviously that's the first priority 👍

Man, I'm loving these retro plays! Since you mentioned Earthsuit, could we ever expect to see some, say, "Wheel"? Also, on Play Dead I thought you did a marvelous job culminating the tones from previous albums while managing to keep everything fresh, creative, and inspired - especially on tracks like "Pixie Oaks" or "War". Great, great stuff.
