How to treat bumblefoot in chickens and poultry. An extra set of hands is always helpful, but you can easily remove your chicken's bumblefoot alone. We’ll show you how to quickly remove the abscess NON-INVASIVELY with NO scalpel necessary using the homeopathic PRID Drawing Salve. The Salve draws the infection to the surface and softens the scab, to easily peel off with kernal attached all in one piece. With no additional help, have a big towel and all your supplies pre-cut and laid out next to you. Make sure you use popsicle sticks or spatulas to not cross contaminate your products.
-Bumblefoot is a staph infection or Plantar Pododermatitis caused by staphylococcus bacteria getting into a cut, splinter or injury to a chickens foot. It is characterized by a black scab and swelling, in more severe cases there can be lameness or the chicken can limp or have the inability to walk. Very mild cases the bird can heal on their own with their natural immune system. If swelling or limping is noticed treatment is needed before the infection spreads and can go to the bone and possibly kill your chicken.
-Consult your local Veterinarian if possible, but if that is not an option for you here is how to easily cure your chicken's Bumblefoot at home with this non-surgical method that has no scalpel involved using PRID Drawing Salve. Most infections can just be treated locally and removing the kernal. More severe cases will need treatment systematically with antibiotics like Penicillin, Oxytetracycline, or Amoxicillin.

I just commented on your previous video, but am commenting here to say Thank You for showing us how to do this without anyone else's help. My husband works hard all day and the last thing he's going to want to do is hold a chicken while I work on her every afternoon when he'd rather be defragging in the garden LOL Thanks again! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate these two videos!!

So glad we can help! We were in a similar boat as Ricardo was off building a large chicken coop on site for a few weeks sun up to sun down and was working so hard and coming home so late I wanted to figure out how I can handle it without him. The large beach towel worked perfectly as it was too heavy for our hen Hedwig to flap her wings. Lol I was able to do everything alone with ease and then Ricardo could film the extraction better himself. Last video we used a tripod and didn’t get a good angle to view it as a result.

With skidish chicks and/or pullets it has been my experience that if you get them in a small area, use a big piece of cardboard or something to gather them into a smaller area that you can reach every or most every point within so it is easier to grab them but before u start, sit still for a good minute and talk to them, I talk pretty to mine and tell them I love them and won't hurt them and how pretty they are and etc.!!! They will scatter and cry when u try to catch one but just do it and then hold the chick or larger chicken in hands or arms so they feel safe easier done if make sure feet are planted solidly so they don't feel like they're falling, then love on each one for at least a few minutes, petting and talking to them. If u do this 2 or 3 times a day in the beginning, maybe for about a week, they will still be kind of skiddish if u try catching them, but if you sit with them and even better if you have some feed to give them near u or in ur hand or on ur lap they will be very likely to come to you and let u pet them hold them, etc., but it is something u should do to some extent every day when you feed them even if you touch them while they are eating then it makes handling and catching them a lot easier!! If you have the time to do more with them you can even get them to come directly to you with a single word but you have to work with them enough to make it a habit for them and it's something you want to keep doing even if u don't need them to come or whatever for several or more days, do it anyway so it stays a habit and they don't change it by stopping it and doing their own thing. I know I said a lot but that is what I have learned form my chicks, ducks & turkeys over the years, and Im sure will work with guinea, geese, swans, peacocks, and etc as long as u put in the effort. Birds are a lot smarter than mainstream and/or old school scientists give them credit for!!! Oh, and should something happen to stop ur routines pick them back up ASAP or they will create their own routine like laying eggs everywhere, not roosting and nesting in the coop if they can get away with it, even finding the highest place to roost which doesn't always mean safety for them, so yeah keep them in routine as much as possible!!! Anyway, I hope this is helpful!!!😊❤️ I love chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese, and etc.!!!!❤❤❤❤

Thank you for putting this out there! So much easier, safer and more humane than the home surgery approach that seems so common. This less invasive method is far superior. Especially given that if one tries to cut the infection out, there's a serious risk of introducing staph to the bloodstream and causing it to go systemic. I have used activated charcoal poultices to draw it out and had great success with that. It worked wonders and was so much easier on them and me. Not to mention quicker and more effective than trying to dig out the plug.

Thanks the exact same bottle of Betadine we use to prep open wounds for surgery in the OR. Good stuff. How often do you change the dressing, and how do you know when it’s healed enough to leave it off?
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
Love that stuff! 24 hours later I cleaned with vetericyn, added new neosporin & redressed with new bandages and wound was already closed and looked like healthy skin forming. I was amazed how fast. I’ll keep doing it daily to check on its healing progress and once I think the skin looks good enough, that it’s pretty healed and the wound wouldn’t reopen and get bacteria or dirt in it. Then the bandage isn’t necessary I’ll discontinue using it.

Do you recommend an antibiotic orally or injected during post treatment? I'm reading mixed advice on this. I saw your video for keeping Tylan 50 on hand. Would this be something to use for bumblefoot along with soaking/removing/wrapping?

If pretty severe it can help immensely. Tylan 50 I have read is not the best antibiotic for bumblefoot. I would research which are of the ones available to you. I have read penicillin and amoxicillin are better choices

How often do you rewrap her foot and how long do you think does that wound takes to heal?
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet 2 года назад
After extraction I check, clean & add neosporin gauze every 24 hours and rewrap new vetwrap. It can vary from bird to bird depending how big the hole left was and how severe the bumble was. Maybe 2 weeks. When skin looks healthy & strong, like scab won’t pop open and bacteria get it I won’t bandage anymore. If you don’t do it daily especially when wound is fresh, there’s a chance the gauze can get stuck to the scab. I notice this doesn’t happen if you just keep up with it daily. More important first few days that you keep up on it. Wound closes very quickly

Tylenol, advil and medications ending in Caine are harmful to poultry. Buffered aspirin only. Aspirin can help to relieve inflammation, swelling and pain. Large fowl of 5 to 7 pounds can be given 1/2 of a baby aspirin once a day or a 1/4 of an adult aspirin. You can break up the aspirin in small pieces

Thank you! The PRID drawing salve is like a thick goo, it’s a homeopathic and it draws the infection to the surface of the scab and makes the scab soft for easy removal. And the wound cleaning spray I use is called vetericyn and I have everything linked in the description 😊😊 I use vetericyn for everything around here if any chicken gets a pecking injury or bleeding I clean with that and then apply wonder dust (syptic powder) to stop bleeding. Well I don’t use the wound dust for bumblefoot, just other bleeding injuries…not to confuse lol

So i tried to treat it... first it looked the same, but then I only got the crust and not the yellow infection part cause the underlying tissue was not open when I pulled on the crust. Now the foot is even worse... vet says 250 bucks for operation and post-op-treatment ... Ill try myself on it again though it seems to be at stage 4 at this moment. Chicken is still running, jumping, scratching, eating, dringing, but it should be in quite some pain currently. I guess if it wont be any better in 2 weeks, whily applying daily epsom-salt-baths and new bandages with ichtolan 20% I will put an end to the chicken. I just dont wanna pay 250 bucks (minimum) for a 30 bucks chicken. I cant do that for every chicken in the future. So either this time works or the henn is done. The vet seemed pissed at me for trying myself on it, but honestly... what do vets expect here? Paying a fortune for every chicken you have? Then nobody could own them. I dont even own them for 2 years and already spent 200 bucks for vet costs and I only have 7 birds (had some bad luck with mareks disease (2 dead henns) from a shitty seller...). Only owned 9 birds, two died cause of marek. One henn started walking backwards, but I got that fixed by giving her tuna. Now two have bumblefoot, one case severe and one only slightly. Both bandaged now. The environment shouldn be that hostile for their feet. They have a nice enclosure. Maybe the wood-chips against mud might be too bad for their feet. So I consider removing them, but Ive seen so many owner who use that without any problems. Maybe they got a splinter... maybe it really is the wood chips...

Since she is limping I would definitely soak, clean, PRID & wrap and see if it goes down. It most likely will and promotes healing. After a couple weeks of that check and see and determine from there if an extraction is necessary

Have you found these infections return or have you ever been successful at getting rid of it long-term? We are on our third attempt at ridding one of our chickens of her bumblefoot with 2 of the attempts done by a vet. Also, have you seen mild infections go away on their own without any treatment? At what point do you act? Thank you for all your insight and these videos, they have been so helpful to a first time chicken owner! :)
@BockBockBouquet
@BockBockBouquet Год назад
Yes mild ones can go away on their own with just the chickens immune system, if there is a scab with no swelling we do not treat. Some bumbles are more troublesome then others, maybe consider a good course of antibiotics along with the cyst removal to really kick it in the butt.

You haven't seen how bad the bumblefoot was on the rooster I just rescued. Definitely not something I could remove without a scalpel. What my rooster has looks more like a silver dollar sized spongy callus. There wasn't an abscess or hard kernel. I also couldn't use PRID because of the open skin. What you're showing in this video is light in comparison.
