Good point on the kinks. It looks like the heat shrink has it force down against the edge of the cell holders pretty tight. It's not damaged, but could be a potential failure point if being used in a high vibration environment.

Cute, but the current capacity is a bit low - I have a small Eaton UPS that uses this size lead acid battery, but it's dead now and I don't want to buy another lead acid battery for it. Was waiting for a LIFePO4 battery to come out that would work, but would need to supply 20A to be useful to keep a single PC+monitor going for 20-30 mins. My main UPS is a 25 year old APC1000 with a homemade 7S16P pack from harvested cells, and still going strong after 5 years!

I've done frankenstein lifepo4 swaps (with the battery+wires sitting outside the case) with a couple of UPSes already. No issues so far. 20 amps of discharge current would be doable by a 20ah lifepo4 battery, but honestly the inverters in that class of UPS would be questionable for long runtimes at max output. Active cooling helps with this.

Omg, I can not even believe I missed this!!! 😱 I happen to be in my email now and saw the notice from RU-vid there! This is absolutely badass, amazing! Such a thorough and technically informative video!! I’m very happy to learn that your capacity test showed that the battery exceeded it/ listed rating...in my experience + .400Ah is a lot for such a small battery! The results make me also happy because I did learn that your hunch is correct, the 6Ah versions that I bought for $18.00 ish ( $3 per amp hour) were on clearance by the manufacturer and yes replaced by the 7Ah that you got! So this also leads me to think 2 things: that the Vatrer is not lying about the capacity of either battery. You have shown that 7Ah you got is legit. And since it is the newer model, it makes that since that they increase the efficiency to 7Ah there is no point in continuing a 6Ah line and so cleared out older but still good models … I wish I had a battery load/capacity tester but I can say, just antidotally, that the ones I have seem to be holding a very good charge under load. Maybe I’ll get a tester off of Alibaba or Temu 😂 Love that you noted the good spot welding as well! All good news in my opinion, I don’t feel like these Vater’s will be burning any boats down which is a great feeling…😅 Bravo for a fantastic video! You have answered all my questions and more. I see some cool comments/questions below. I will add to any that I might be of some help with! Thank you from Los Angeles and keep up the great work!❤

@drescherjm 11 месяцев назад
The title on the product listing mentions UPS compatibility but I question whether this can be used in a typical UPS that has an SLA battery charger. The price isn't bad however I am concerned about the lower capacity rating of this versus a 10 or 12ah SLA of the same physical size and also the charging. Edit: 0:49 the max load is a deal breaker. A typical UPS would require 2 to 3 times this max load.
@LithiumSolar
@LithiumSolar 11 месяцев назад
I don't typically suggest using LFP as a drop-in replacement for Lead Acid in applications that weren't designed for LFP. In addition to the common problem you noted of not exceeding 1C on most batteries, there's also the concern of not being able to disable the periodic equalization cycle on the UPS, which would likely produce a voltage exceeding 14.6V.
@drescherjm
@drescherjm 11 месяцев назад
@@LithiumSolar If there ever becomes such a product it would greatly help me. As a person who is in IT, I currently have several dozen UPSs on equipment I manage. I know that for the last 3 or so years there exist UPSs from the major manufacturers that have lithium-Ion batteries however those are expensive and require me to replace all my current UPSs making that solution less desirable.
@LithiumSolar
@LithiumSolar 11 месяцев назад
@@drescherjm I couldn't agree more!! There are some APC's that you can manipulate the charge voltages through serial communication and some that you can disable the equalization on. I think really any that you can disable equalization on would be fine, as long as your battery is large enough to support the current requirements. I've also looked at the LFP options and they do exist but as you noted are prohibitively expensive still.
@prerunnerwannabe
@prerunnerwannabe 11 месяцев назад
I used a 7ah LFP battery to replace the dead lead acid one that was in a small APC UPS, and so far there haven't been any issues. Since it's for a small home office application, the computer and monitor that it's connected to probably don't ever exceed 1 amp of continuous discharge anyway under normal use, so I imagine it should work fine. As for over charge issues, shouldn't the built-in BMS prevent overcharging from happening anyway?
@LithiumSolar
@LithiumSolar 11 месяцев назад
@@prerunnerwannabe I'm glad it's working for you, which model UPS do you have? I'm sure it will be fine but it's not something I want to actively encourage. Also, the BMS is really for safety protection not a replacement for proper voltage settings. My primary concerns here would be BMS failure (transistor getting stuck "on") or the battery being shut off when you don't expect it to and potentially disconnecting your load - which I assume is important if it's on a UPS.

That size and AH rating is so common in backup systems for phones, internet, home security, etc... Not surprised someone decided to take advantage of that packaging category. Personally I would never spend the money on a lithium standby battery, just get another AGM... at least they like being fully charged all day for years on end.
@Sylvan_dB
@Sylvan_dB 11 месяцев назад
"years on end" might be 2 years, usually 3 years, sometimes 5 years before you have to replace it. The LiFePO4 version should last the lifetime of the equipment if they have the ability to turn off the charger instead of just leaving it on float all the time. There is probably a better chemistry for standby applications that LiFePO4, but it definitely is not lead-acid unless your only consideration is initial purchase price.

Ha! ... as the original question-asker, I can actually answer this one quite passionately! I don’t use them as UPS backups at all (though there are new backups systems that are small and have the proper electronics to charge lifepo4s safety -- just please avoid putting these batteries in older SLA systems) . The REAL magic ✨(sometimes movie magic) of these batteries is in deep cycle and or continuous (“always on”) low current, solar powered devices: industrial and smart home sensors, automation triggers /relays/ relay sensors, remote security cameras and sirens, micro computers, Raspberry Pi, wifi modules, LoRa coms modules, Zigbee, ESP8622, ESP32, robotics, relays, servo motors for cameras, sevo motors, panels solar panel tracking , gate motors, deer feeders and lots more. I use mine lots of the above but also with differential GPS camera location trackers for on-set visual effects. These batteries are great in combination with a good solar lithium charge controller modules ($10 on Aliexpress) and the proper buck converters + misc circuitry to use in set-it-and-forget-it, hard to reach / hard to access places that need solar powered gear. Love them! I sometimes take them out of the original case but I actually like these cases and didnt want to this time! I also wire them in parallel when needed.
@LA-Creative
@LA-Creative 11 месяцев назад
@@JamesAmbrose48Lithiumsolar can answer this way better / more technically correct but my understanding is that devices like power tools, drones, etc work and sell better when the amount of potential energy in each cell is very high vs the weight. Lipo sparkles here because lipo packs more punch for the weight/size. lipo is 3.7 vs 3.2v per cell as well … but … significantly less stable. LiFePo4, though older tech and less efficient, has made a comeback because it is more stable/safe at the trade of increased size/weight. It's like a nice compromise between sla and lipo (for example now people who used to have fears of lithium battery nightmares of burning to death on their sailboats are finally able to use Lithium/ LiFePo4 cells -we never used lipo)! The Vatrer 7 and 6Ah batteries we have, the cases they come in are in that standard industry form factor size you see everywhere with SLA (however they should not be used in SLA devices)! The size of the cases is overkill for these 4 pack cells but the industry wanted to stick with the old case sizing to make things easier on device manufacturers, so here we are. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I wish they were smaller boxes because this four-cell setup leaves a fair amount of extra space in it. I usually remove 4 cell packs like this from the original case to save lots of room (I always keep the serial-connected ones in those black spacers tho for safety). I have seen custom battery builders use smaller LiFePo4 cells and safely wire them into in the same form factor cases resulting in significantly larger capacities and or custom voltages (so yes this is why things aren’t adding up, but these cases can be packed with more cells it’s just a lot more work and cost wiring more cells to bms, etc). … If that all makes sense?
