Good video and this is a really stand up company. During the 48 hours that buying ammo online was legal this past month I placed an order with Brownell's. Then the ninth circuit court made it illegal again and they easily could have played it safe and canceled my order as it hadn't been shipped yet, but they still sent it to me.

As soon as I got my red dot sight for my tactical 12 gauge bullpup shotgun, I installed it where it looked like it should be.. right smack in the middle,, half way between the but and the muzzle. I bought the one with the riser base so I didn't have to force my cheek to the but. I set it up to zero at 25 yards with a rifled slug shot. I added a red laser sight out in front of the red dot sight, and zeroed it for about 8 yards. This way I have close range accuracy with the laser and long range accuracy with the red dot sight. Last I installed a flashlight on the right rail, forward of the laser. It also acts as a close range sight, as the buck shot pellets all land within the circle made by the light beam. Easy as pi.

Underrated pro comment! People have to consider what they are using their guns for and there is no overall setting for an optic. This is an out of the box mindset, very impressive to read!
@largelarry2126
@largelarry2126 3 года назад
Mounted toward the rear makes it a slight bit faster but harder and slower to shoot at anything that's moving. Mounted forward is the opposite, a bit slower but good for moving targets. Think of a skeet or trap shotgun with a bead sight out on the tip of the barrel, you can hit fast moving things very quickly and with ease. So with red dots it's best to have the sight out away from your eye. This will also make the dot look smaller and more crisp.
@lolbobs
@lolbobs 3 года назад
Red dots don't change size based on distance, you can push the optic up against your eyeball or hold it one handed at the end of your arms reach and it won't change size. Red dots are rated in MOA, which would be useless if it changed sizes at will.

I played around with red dots. But finally settled on a 1-4× illuminated scope. At close range one power illuminated works just like a red dot. If the range is further, crank up the magnification. Mounted on a Remington bolt action ( .223 Remington) I can take out coyotes from point blank out to 200 yards. That's good enough for my purposes.

I always get comments that I have my Vortex Spitfire 1x Prism optic too far back on my AR15, and that I need to move it further out, closer to the muzzle. I think that they are mistaking it for a red dot sight, because I know that the position I have it gives me the best eye relief, and I love how the crosshairs don't look like a blob, like a red dot. I have slight astigmatism.

It's also a bad idea to "bridge the gap" as seen in the video and mount a sight on top of the gap between the receiver and the handguard - keep your sight off the handguard completely. The sight has to be only on the receiver because even the most durable handguard can flex a little bit and throw off your zero, even if the sight is partially mounted on the receiver.
@CalebSavant
@CalebSavant 4 года назад
Yes! Thank you! This is indeed true for some handguards! Long handguards with short barrel nuts are notorious for this. In the video it is mounted on the BRN180S above the trunnion which sits approximately 1" behind the handguard.

A lot people mounting IR lasers at the end of their rifles would disagree with you. Also, people have been shooting with rail mounted irons for years. You're not gonna have zero or flex issues with most modern day handguards. Regardless if it's mounted on the receiver, you should always be verifying your zeros.

With both eyes open, the optic’s housing won’t block your vision, so there is no advantage to mounting it forward. It’s just a fad. If you mount it closer to your eye, you can pick up the dot substantially faster and you have the same SA and FOV. Run a speed drill with a shot timer under stress and you’ll see what I mean. If you hunt for the dot for even a half-second, your times will show it. Moving it closer to the eye also improves the rifles balance.

We have found that with the optic mounted farther from the eye, if it becomes occluded for some reason it is easier for our shooter’s to marry both eye’s individual pictures and shoot accurately versus the optic being close to the eye which caused many of our shooters to struggle and throw rounds high and left for right handed shooters.

One thing about the first RDS mount location that was showed is that the optic mount is bridging the hand guard and the upper receiver. This may cause issues as rounds are put through the gun due to possible flexing at the point where the two parts meet. The mount should be either totally on the hand guard or upper.

My aimpoint hangs on my hand guard a bit. The actual locking pin is on the receiver. I got a 3x magnifier and back up irons so it’s the only way unless I buy a $200 cantilever. But with iron sights how can you lose zero of the red dot? Just simply flip the iron up and make sure the dot lines up.
@markbaytan
@markbaytan 2 года назад
@@Zack.G23 I can see how an absolute co-witness of the iron sights with red dot can mitigate this potential issue. I currently have an LPVO on my main where cowitnessing with irons is not possible. Since my previous post I’ve added an offset RMR. It’s been a great way to run at 1X and still gives me the “warm and fuzzies” about having a back up option. @brownells
@brownells 4 года назад
That’s a tough one to answer without seeing the gun, the optic and how he has everything placed. Generally, if the red dot has no magnification, the short sight radius shouldn’t matter since one can mount a RDS on a handgun and the sights stay clear and where they should be. If it’s a magnified optic, it will throw the front sight way off and down to the left usually. We would suggest you call the tech line at 800-741-0015 to speak with a gunsmith to hammer out the details.

When you have front and rear sights, you can mount your red-dot at the proper height to line up ( co-witness) with your original sights.
