One of the hardest parts of misophonia, is that people are not sympathetic towards it. This drives you to become isolated, which is a terrible outcome for most people. If you attempt to explain it to family and friends they, often times, will negatively judge you. It is not uncommon to get a response with the criticism that you are just using some "Made up disease", as an excuse for what they see, as you just having a bad temper. They might add "I have things that annoy me, but I don't yell at anybody. You just need to learn self control". So you stop trying to get others to understand and you keep it to yourself. Then as you go it alone, you slip up with an outburst and get labeled as a crazy angry guy. It becomes a situation with no winners. You can't really blame anyone for not understanding. I couldn't have comprehended the effect this has on those living with misophonia. So, bless you. I hope this documentary will have an impact for those who have become isolated.

I explain it to family members who tell me to get used to it this way: Could you get used to, or ignore being punched in the face all day long? that's what this feels like all day long. I find that attitude prevalent among a lot of people in the non affected demographic. My sister in law is a freaking hardass about doubting that I have it.

Bad analogy. You won't convince anyone by equating totally unacceptable behavior such as punching someone in the face with totally acceptible behavior like cleaning your nose with a hanky or eating.

my family tells me to get over it. I can't. I have thought about suicide many times. I have cut myself before because of this. I have screamed, suffered, cried, lost friends, and have had very violent reactions. this disorder can be very difficult to deal with especially if you live around people who barely care about how they eat. just recently, I have begun twitching and throwing my head back and twisting it, ugh. even visions of people eating can make me so unbelievebly angry that I have come close to killing someone. misophonia needs to be taken more seriously

I'm literally crying right now. My whole life I thought I was crazy. My parents growing up thought this was just control issues that I had made up, and they too would chew in my face and tell me to deal with it. It's really a shame to have to be stressed out and in flight or flight all the time. I feel like my health and wellbeing suffer, and it definitely gets in the way of my relationships. I've moved 4 times. We have spent so much money. For me it's not even chewing. It's music from neighbors, the beats, the bass sounds, it's the noise that travels through floors above our apartment e.g. people walking that creates this beat, and more recently it's the bouncing of balls from kids playing outside. I'm at the point where I want to check out. I feel trapped on earth. I've tried headphones, I've seen a psychologist, I've been on antidepressants, I have done what I can. I don't know what else to do so that I'm not a burden to others. The triggers are increasing. I feel even with people with this thing I've not heard people talk about the bass or beats of music or noise from neighbors. It's always chewing and breathing, so do I even have it? I'm just in a prison. And my dear husband😢😢, I love him, he wants to fix it.

I'm diagnosed autistic and I live by a main road with heavy traffic. Motorbikes and sportscars drive me up the wall. I want to move but I can't afford to live anywhere quieter. I have been known to run out into the street screaming at drivers of these noisy vehicles and have been assaulted as a result. Neurotypical people tell me to 'tune out' the noise but my neurodivergent brain simply cannot do that. It causes me significant, unignorable distress on a daily basis. What really gets me is that most cars don't sound like that, they just make a quiet whoosh sound, but drivers of motorbikes and sportscars make a conscious decision to drive vehicles that are antisocially loud through residential areas and will even pay extra to make their vehicles super-loud. I think it's obnoxious and inconsiderate and they should only be allowed in motor sports.

I remember my first experience of misophonia from hearing my mother/abuser chew her food when I was a child. She would chew her food so slowly and make these disgusting, clacking, squelching noises. I would have to cram my ears with my tiny hands so as not to hear it because I wanted to scream. I would scream and cry at loud noises like balloons popping. My mother's boyfriend's snoring made me want to stab him in his sleep. Now I'm older I still feel heart palpitations at sudden loud noises. The noise of traffic is the worst. But the difference now is that the anxiety has developed into rage.

I love how those with Misophonia are all supporting each other on this thread. I also have this condition and instead of using our time to be immature and disrespectful to those who bash this condition, I've noticed how we simply validate each other and share stories. Not only do we live with this disability, but we also have limited support since the condition is quite odd and hard to understand to others. I cannot wait until this film comes out. Cheers to us with Misophonia!

I have a neighbor who has theater speakers and is hard of hearing. I have a heart condition and already struggled with anxiety but his low thumping has sent me into fits of rage and suicidal thoughts in the past. I have done everything to try and get him to stop with Police and Management and talking to him. Never helps. I'm in a position unable to move. Then when in a car and I hear a stereo go off my rage comes back. Garbage trucks rumbling drives me nuts. I don't want to say oh I have this condition I saw online. I can't diagnose myself. What I can do is see that at least I know I'm not the only one who has an issue like this. In fact it's so bad I have not lived in my own apt in a month. I'm deathly afraid to go back.

I mean, have you ever been annoyed with someone chewing with their mouth open? You notice it, and then become hyperaware of it until it stops. These people seem to have several trigger noises, and it doesn't go away because they're annoyed by every day sounds. Not sure what there is to be skeptical about, but I'm glad you're not writing people off just becuase you're not experiencing these symptoms.
@Firebird00500
@Firebird00500 9 лет назад
Yep, I struggle with this as well. Maybe not quite as severely as these folks, but it can be extremely distracting. When I was in school, I had to take tests in separate rooms because the noises would come out of the woodwork the moment people went silent and focused on their tests: sniffing, sneezing, coughing, sighing, throat-clearing... it would drive me to distraction. I have a paired disorder called Echolalia that causes me to imitate the noises people make around me, which has caused a lot of people to be upset with me. Now, at work, people are always making noises and I have my headphones on constantly. It's the only way I can focus or go through the day without feeling anger or anxiety from hearing those noises. Sometimes the noises penetrate the music I'm listening to, but I can only do so much. I always thought I was mildly autistic until I heard about Misophonia.

When I was a child, I used to hit my sister during the night because of the noise of her sleep breathing. I think that the fact that my mother would, when I was young, tell me to chew with my mouth closed and then I'd see/hear my father chewing with his mouth open might have caused this to become an issue for me. As I have gotten older, my list of triggers has lengthened. This is scary for the future. I used to be able to watch people chewing gum -- as long as I couldn't hear it, I was okay. Now, I can't stand to even see it. The loud boom-boom of "music" drives me nuts. I was supposed to be a volunteer teacher at church but I never really encouraged anyone to come to me for help because what if they came chewing gum? I do ask myself how much of this is misophonia and how much is that I'm just an intolerant person. Where do you draw that line? Dogs barking. Sniffing. Wind chimes. I have recently expanded to people saying, "You know" all the time and people over-using and misusing the word, "like." The music from the car wash two blocks away. I'm intolerant when other people don't fit my idea of what's right. How much of that is misophonia and how much is just being an intolerant person? How I try to cope is by wearing sound-blocking ear muffs (the kind you wear when you are mowing the lawn) at home, in the house, to block out the barking of dogs. These ear muffs, and also regular headphones, I can attach to my phone from which I play "white noise." But, virtually nothing can block out the "boom boom" of speakers. I pity the poor soul who posted here about his hard-of-hearing neighbour with the speakers. My heart goes out to you.

I just found out about the word or condition misophonia last week. You would have thought that I won the lottery jackpot amount in history. There's a name for what I've been going through all my life, and there's other people who have it just like me! I'm just now starting to tell friends and family about this hoping it will answer any questions they may have had as to why I can only hang out with them 10-15 minutes when they come over, but then I have to leave the room. I've always felt awful about doing that, and would describe it as best I knew how, but I never felt like , "Good, they GOT it". Many times I would send them a txt msg after they left apologizing for not hanging out with them, and they'd write back "we understand. It's cool", but I still wasn't convinced they really understood. Trouble is, my misophonia is getting worse. I haven't worked in 2.5 years, rarely do I ever want to leave the house, I can't do my own grocery shopping anymore. It's to the point now where all I do is get out of bed in the morning, get coffee and go to my ez-chair, and just stay in the room alone the entire day quietly entertaining myself with my iPad, then I go to bed and do it all over again the next day. I think about the life I'm missing out on, and fear that by isolating myself all the time, people will soon give up on me and stop trying to be with me altogether. As I said though, I'm just finding out about the condition and researching it, so maybe it won't be as bad as I fear it will be. Wish there was a cure.

I was left with no choice but to develop my dark side: I lied and schemed and conned teachers to procure library passes before lunch periods, so I could sneak-eat my lunch in there, alone. Sometimes I'd do lunchtime in the bathroom. Blissfully alone. When I was really young (preschool!) I bullied my classmates about their eating habits hard and alienated myself. I called them mean names and gave them long lectures. I got into trouble for my vociferous cruelty; every time I made a kid cry they'd put me in time-out, which I loved. My family yelled that they'd had enough! They have to eat, don't they! Just get over it! As an "adult" now I'm still amazed at how violently I can hate my dad when he eats pretzels, or my mom when she bites a spoon. (UGH) At least now I can explain it, and I'm not the only one, and for this I'm so grateful!

@thedoublegchannel1982
@thedoublegchannel1982 8 лет назад
+Landon Clark thats a part of it. When I hear what triggers me, it makes me so angry that I want to yell in rage to get the sound to stop. What's doubly worse is that it has made being around anyone else, anything else, or any kind of thing that makes a repetitive noise impossible to be around. I can't have a ticking clock in my house. I can't have a pet because of noises that the animals makes, I have had to consider selling my home and moving to the countryside somewhere so I don't have to hear barking dogs in the neighborhood, and I sure as hell can't be around anyone else for fear of the noise they make might set me off on them. I can't hear ripping paper, because that sounds like someone eating an apple. If anyone eats and apple, I want to ram it down their throat like Im loading an old style powder cannon. It's very difficult to get this across to people who think Im being a snit about it. To me, it is very real, I have even considered suicide as an option, because I don't see anyone in my future because I couldn't stand any noise they made. I tried dating once 13 years ago, and I had to break up with her because she insisted on eating apples or carrots in front of me and thought I was out my mind when I told her it upset me. I want to die because I feel like I could save myself and others around me the pain and suffering of having to deal with me, and I feel like I could be saving myself the trouble of dealing with a heart attack or stroke brought about by the stress of having to hear these sounds. I can't concentrate at work because our management, in their fucking useless wisdom, has seen fit to allow people to make as much noise as they wish eating, clipping their nails, etc… but for me to want a workplace where they do all that crap in the break room.. oh no…. we don't want to infringe on them, but to drive me to want to eat a bullet is perfectly fine.

Just seeing this trailer has changed my life. I, like others, thought I was alone. I thought I had anger issues, and was going insane. I have lived with this for at least 15 years, and I thought it was just me. I never knew it had a name, and there was little to no information on it. It has only been in the last two years that I have seen small paragraphs trying to describe the symptoms on medical websites. But it wasn't until I saw real people talking about experiencing it themselves that it really hit home, and I broke down into tears to see that others experience it too. It was such a relief to see that others experience it as a rage also. I had thought that even if other people did experience it, they more than likely experienced it in a different manor. But to see others explain it as a rage and that they understand what it feels like was just such a relief. All of my life I have tried to explain it to friends, family, co-workers when I didn't even fully understand it myself. They would simply look at me as if I was crazy, or worse dismiss it as if I was over reacting. But now I have hope, and I no longer feel alone. Thank you so much for this. You have changed my life for the better.

I think I have this up a degree. The sounds that bother me have to be repetitive or constant. Snoring, chewing, sniffling, loud breathing, rattling fan, blinds or shades blowing from the wind. Not sure if it's related but the sight of someone jiggling their leg, being breathed on, someone else fidgeting on a bed or seat I'm also sitting on. I rarely feel rage but I find these things intolerable. Even smells can bother me. I've had to remove bread and bananas from my vicinity in order to fall asleep lol. I Can't ignore these things. Have to get away or cover it up with other noise.

I believe I have this condition; however, I don't feel that it is debilitating like some people say. It does affect my relationships with others because in the moment, when another person is the source of the sound that is bothering me, I feel like I have to make them stop or get away from them. Either way I come off as rude, but the alternative is to be completely distracted from anything else and feel intense frustration and anger (like I want to throw something, scream, etc.) until the noise stops. Most of the day when I am somewhere where there are lots of different noises happening at the same time, they don't bother me. Maybe my case is not as intense as others', but it is a real problem. I do have ways of dealing with it, mostly just moving away somewhere where I can no longer hear the noise until it's over, but that's not always possible, and there are lots of noises that bother me that happen over and over every day. I am also very sensitive to movement. I prefer to be mostly still all the time, and I am bothered by repetitive movement such as someone shaking their leg if I can feel the movement (sitting together on a couch, etc.). If I can see the movement in my visual range it bothers me. I have sometimes plugged my ears with my fingers, covered my eyes to avoid being bothered by these things which I feel is a bit unusual to most people. I absolutely hate when my cat is licking or drinking water. I have to get away from the sound, it makes me so angry and I know it's ridiculous so I try not to bother the cat, but this is what I'm talking about. We know it doesn't make sense, but we can't stop it.

+Ashley Cope Perfectly said Ashley...we share the same story/lives. I realize it's not logical, and that's because it doesn't involve the logical part of your brain. If we could just turn it off at will...we would. Most people have things that bother them, magnify those few things by 100 and then magnify the negative feelings associated with those annoyances and that's a taste of what it is like to live with misophonia. People are attempting suicide because this takes a toll on a person's psyche. It's easy to hide behind the internet and find humor in that, it just makes me more appreciative of the people in my life who do understand.

You really need to open with some sort of attempt to recreate what this disorder is like to experience or a better explanation, because these interviews aren't doing it. There's an attempt at the 2 minute mark but it really doesn't convey much more than what we all experience in everyday life. I want to know how it might feel if I had it, not just hear some people complaining that they have it.
@ActionMediaProductions
@ActionMediaProductions 9 лет назад
+TheDiggityDNG I've had it 48 years and tried explaining to the people I'm closest to and live with, and they still don't totally get it. This was an 8 minute trailer used to crowd-source and I raised $23,500 in two weeks...so apparently, I was somewhat effective in making people feel the pain we endure. I have over 75 quotes from people saying that the trailer changed their lives and gave them a way to show their families and spouses that this is a real condition and that it's affecting lives. This trailer isn't even 1/10 of what it's in the actual film. My goal is to raise awareness, not be the end all miso film.

@susanmaxfieldlmft1089
@susanmaxfieldlmft1089 9 лет назад
+TheDiggityDNG I can tell you my experience of what Misophonia is like.... I had to diagnose myself a year ago by researching extreme irritation from noise and tell my psychiatrist, a seasoned psychiatrist for adults had never heard of it. For me, many repetitive noises drive me crazy, like dripping water, high pitched barking, but the absolute worse for me is listening to people type. the click click click, it is beyond irritating, it is so intolerable I have to either leave the room or risk screaming at someone to stop typing. One time when I was going through severe anxiety at work for different reasons, I was in a meeting in which a woman was taking notes on her laptop typing throughout the meeting, and even though she was in the back of the room, it actually caused me an anxiety attack. I made the mistake of trying to stay in the meeting because it was a supervision meeting and I was co-facilitating, so I tried to ignore it and block it out but I found myself literally rocking back and forth and felt like I was going crazy, it's worse than fingernails going down a chalkboard. I was about to cry and wanted to scream at the lady to stop typing, I had no choice but to excuse myself and I could not calm down and literally drove myself to the nearest urgent care, in which I stepped into the lobby and at the front desk they were typing away again, I held my hands over my ears and cried, it is that bad. The surprising thing is, it doesn't bother me when I'm the one typing! I just can't tolerate hearing anyone else do it, and the more tired I am or the more anxiety I'm going through, the worse it gets, hence the panic attack I had in that meeting. That's because when we are tired or anxious our threshold is much lower. Aside from repetitive noises I can't stand listening to people clear their throats or people who swallow loudly. Some people make noises with their throats while chewing (not just the chewing itself), and then the swallowing just irritates me beyond belief. Also, certain words said by others irritates me, like the words "hungry" "angry" "chewing" "Jacob" and certain accents. Extreme Hispanic accents are so irritating to me and I'm not racist, it's the way they talk, I can't control the irritation and need to remove myself. I hope this helps you understand a little better. Just think of something that irritates you, like a child screaming at the top of their lungs, you will do anything to get it to stop and since you can't shut the child up you have to remove yourself from the noise so you don't do something you will regret.
@gretlvonboomboom1616

+TheDiggityDNG Considering that people with misophonia are one of the major target audiences of the film, it would be doubly triggering to make us experience a simulation of the disorder we already have. There are definitely videos here on RU-vid that demonstrate this, however. :)

"remove yourself from the noise so you don't do something you will regret." Made me giggle with that. Not a sufferer, and have only learned about misophonia through YT. What do 'silent sounds' feel like? I know it seems stupid, but there are things that can change the whole palette of sounds. Eg In UK going out for a walk at 3:00AM when it has just snowed heavy... it blankets and calms all sounds. Would that just be the absence of sound, or something akin to the cold glass of water to a man dying of thirst?

To be honest, till I was 18, I thought it's nothing unique and that everyone reacts the same on heavy breathing, crunch sounds, etc. At the university I was sharing a dorm and studying with a roommate.it became impossible and put me in a rage, so or I would punch her, or I had to leave the room.. that's how I learned. Since then - headphones are my best friend :) All the best for you and other misophoniacs, we are sensitive and that makes us special,!

@@jasinmic I'm surprised your grandmother still has her teeth given how she eats :P I did always think I was bothered more than others by specific sounds growing up, just that nobody would give a shit or take it seriously haha. After my first year at university I have always lived in my own studio/apartments, no roommates because I cant stand it like you. Now I live with in a place with my girlfriend. She does a few things that kill me. She can tell how bothered I am by her sometimes and I do hate that feeling of guilt because I know objectively she is doing nothing wrong. But yeah you tolerate all things from each other, other bad habits too, so I suppose we shouldn't feel guilty for having misophonia. Sucks you gotta make half-jokes, and ask if someone is trying to kill their plate instead of just telling them straight up to just please stop.. haha ;)

At this point in my life it serves no purpose to share these facts. I have no human to share with. Don't know how these people managed but mine is so severe that its impossible to learn social stuff at my age. Glad it's gaining interest because that will help young people discovering this problem with themselves.

This is honestly one of the worst things I deal with on a daily basis. Everything feels like a battle and I feel I'm going to forever be alone because of it.

Kelly Ripa has this -I remember seeing her speak about it on her show. This is not uncommon at all.

1946dodge no, it is extremely rare but is very over-diagnosed. Most people find at least some sounds annoying. But only some notice immediately when their friend comes over that they are chewing gum and then know that they are going to cry themselves to sleep that night. The worst part is there is no way to tell someone about it with out seeming like a total jerk.

Chewing ice, crunching loudly, smacking, slurping, heavy breathing, suckling, sometimes sniffling, etc...just anything that involves the mouth and the noises that it produces just drives me into RAGE MODE 😡

No idea what this ticking or thumping is half way through but I had to turn down the volume until it passed. Ironyyyyyy. Lol.

This was a crowd funding trailer I produced 3 years ago, the goal was to reach non-sufferers as well. $72,000 later, I succeeded. Watch the finished film, no thumping or ticking...I promise.

My brother and I sleep in the same room. Most nights he goes to bed before I do and when he sleeps he often moves. Do you think I have misophonia when I absolutely hate when he starts moving because of the sound it makes? I wouldn't say I can't control myself, but I do have a tendency to start yelling at him or waking him up, so that he doesn't make the sound anymore.

Apart from other symptoms I too hated my sister's breathing and mouth sounds when sleeping. I ended up sleeping with a pillow on my ear and other ear pushed down to mattress my whole childhood.... You seem to be misophonic.
