She sucks for herself, TRUST ME, the feeling is horrible when I don't take my meds. She also sucks for her friends as well, how selfish. And if the meds are giving her such bad side effects, then don't join the group that day. Yeah, it's a bitch not being able to join in things because of health. I know that only all too well, but you do not do things like that to other people. Do you think she would have been OK with one of the group being sick and having to cancel on her day? Would that've bowed any sympathy from her? My money is on: she would be pissed and have some kind of tantrum because it has HER day and she only gets a couple of good days, blah, blah, blah. its very clear that the parents don't care about their kids' names, because its only NOW that they are concerned about how the names will limit them for jobs and how the kids could be teased for the names. if they really cared about it, they would have considered those things before they named their kids weird names.

As someone with an autoimmune disease managed by medication, the girl in the 2nd story is DEFINITELY doing this on purpose. It's not that hard to just communicate with her friends, and if she really wanted to participate, she would take the meds. If I start having a flare while I'm on trips, I just take a minute to rest or go back to the hotel without holding my friends back. That's absurd
@remedy836
@remedy836 8 месяцев назад
I was thinking the same thing. I have fibromyalgia and an autoimmune condition (depending on which doctor you ask?). Sometimes I flare during trips, during stressful situations, when I get poor sleep, etc. (I’m sure you know how it is). When I flare, what I need is a break or a rest or…you know…the meds I’m supposed to take. Sometimes a flare occurs during something I really want to do. Unfortunately, being chronically ill means that just happens and it becomes a choice whether or not to just do the thing anyway. If you need to stop something, that’s fair, but it shouldn’t involve everyone stopping everything to cater to you. It’s not fair of her to weaponize her condition. Her health is her responsibility, and her friends shouldn’t suffer for her convenience.

Story 2. As someone with a disability who is also forgetful as hell about my meds, I would not DARE to interrupt plans of others in my group if I had any other option. If I feel like I can't do an activity, I either make sure everyone knows and is cool with it if we have to cut it short, or I STAY HOME. My symptoms are my responsibility. My meds are my responsibility. And the fact that Sadie is perfectly capable of taking her meds properly when she cares about the activity, and is absolutely fine with causing herself flare-ups when she doesn't care, tells me that she's not actually forgetting. She's making the conscious decision to slack on her meds on days where she doesn't mind flaring up. She even says that the meds affect her, which sounds like she actively decides to skip doses to avoid side effects. To me, this reads as if she has FOMO, so she wants to come with, but then she also uses the flares to cut activities short when she doesn't want to do them anymore. And that's genuinely the shittiest thing EVER.

About the "no going into my cabinet" story: Back in the wild 90s my uncle lost an eye, got a few bones broken and could've very easily lost his life as he was kidnapped and tortured by a mob. He was a journalist specializing on investigative work and had some sensitive papers in his bedroom that also served as his workspace, so noone else was allowed there. During my auntie from other side of the family's visit her daughter got bored and went into uncle's bedroom, found some markers and began to draw on various papers. She was soon discovered, scolded and booted out, with auntie shouting back very similar arguments of her being "just a child" and "not hurting anyone". Some days later the girl was sitting in her arts and crafts and decided to drew something she saw on those papers in uncle's bedroom. She didn't know what it was, just thought it looked pretty. Well, it was a very particular plant (can't say which, as it is outlawed pretty much all over the world, so take a wild guess). Her teacher of course asked where she saw that, and the girl pointed at her uncle. The teacher informed the police, the gang uncle was digging dirt on had their informant in the force, and since the teacher told them uncle's full credentials, it was kinda a matter of time from there for things to get nasty. And mind you, all that happened in an era when a "home computer" wasn't yet a concept, not to say mobile phones or social networks. Now look at the situation OP found himself in. Let's say this girl takes a selfie and in the corner of it just happens to be some very sensitive paper caught in the frame by sheer accident. OP might get fined. OP might lose the case. OP might lose his license. Or even share my uncle's misfortune, if he's really unlucky. Some information is akin to a bomb. Imagine yourself coming home and seeing your wife and kid playing horse with an old shell you had stored in the closet you specifically told them not to go into. And when you nearly lose it from a panic attack, they both go "oh, what's the big deal, we were just playing, why so serious".

Story 2: Unfortunately, the term "ableist" is a red flag to me. I'm not saying it isn't a real thing, it 100% is, but I've only ever seen accusations of ableism in 2 contexts: -Self-diagnosed people getting defensive when you question the legitimacy of their diagnosis and/or call BS when they say the condition they claim to suffer from isn't that big of a deal. (not that big of a deal as in, there's no necessity to get treatment because you supposedly can live perfectly fine with it) -People suffering from a condition and/or their enablers trying to use said condition as an excuse for crappy behavior when you aren't buying it.

I understand that, but as someone who is mentally disabled and have had to deal with ableism for a lot of my life, it's not as big of a red flag as you make it out to be. It is a very serious issue that a lot of people deal with, and should not be dismissed as something simple like that. My parents had to struggle getting me an IEP plan while I was at school because my principal was an ableist, saying she didn't believe in ADHD and that I was just faking it. Thankfully they were able to get it and get me the help I needed, but she was a constant thorn in my side for elementary school, and for the rest of school as well, since she ended up being demoted to vice-principal of the middle-high school after it was found out she was locking students in closets until their parents came to get them and pulling them by the ear when they misbehaved.

Her actions could have literally cost him years of his life and hundreds of thousands of dollars simply because she was curious. Law school is very expensive. If those photos got posted and something accidentally ended up on social media, OP would have wasted his entire law career including the years in law school, whatever loans he took out to pay for it, and would have to redo his entire adult life. I'm disabled and need to take medication to manage it. One of my disabilities even causes memory issues, making remembering to take the meds even harder. Sadie has absolutely zero legs to stand on - there are so many ways to manage medication and make sure you take it. When I hang out with friends or engage in similar activities, my medication is on my person at all times. Her behaviour also seems really self-destructive as she's likely on that medication for a reason and not taking it is just hurting herself and everyone around her. Often times you HAVE to consistently take medication for it to even work properly, so even outside of her clearly malicious actions, this behaviour has to stop.

Story 3: I ended up with a disorderly conduct conviction because of something similar to this so i have no sympathy for this 13 year old. Sure its only a minor misdemeanor from my college days, but still. My attorney had a lock on his office at his home office and he was specific to family and guests that no one can go in there and why. It was likely i was going yo get a dismissal bevause they couldnt prove their case. I had a psychiatric breakdown and couldve just plead guilty but because the witness was barred as untrustworthy they had no evidence but my conversation with the attorney via email in privileged communication i explained to him what happened because you should always bs honest with your lawyer. He had emailed me about the dismissal so the email chain was up but then his son fell off a table and got hurt so he rushed out to attend to him to make sure he was okay (his son was 1 at the time, he was okay, thankfully) but in the time that that that was happening his 15 year old niece went into his office to "play lawyer" and took selfies for instagram. My emails were still up in the background and were used to where i ended up pleading guilty instead of having a dismissal because the nieces friend was the DAs daughter and the DA followed her on instagram and she recognized my name in the bold and zoomed in to read. He didnt lock the door for one time in an emergency-like situation but did close the door and everyone knows the rule and its never been tested before. But the niece saw the door sas unlocked from the living room where her cousin fell and instead of varing for her cousin took the opportunity to "go play lawyer" and messed uo everything. So while i get that OP maybe shouldnt have been so rude, u can care less. Thankkfully it was only a disorderly conduct charge and i took a plea deal to only have a fine instead of 30 days in jail, but it was going to be dismissed!!! What if this was someone charged with sometjing more serious in a similar situation and now just because of this entitled brat for instagram clout is sitting years in jail when it couldve been dismissed? So i have no synpathy for thay child. She needed a wake up call because children dont realize the real world consequnces their seemingly innocent mistakes can cause people.

Agreed, teenagers are not as stupid as people make them out to be and there way too much that some teenagers get away with because "they're just a kid." They're a kid who understands the gravity of the situation. I only recently became not a teenager and everyone in my general age group for multiple towns around knew better too. I think some adults think they are soooo stupid because they forgot how it was to be an actual teenager and only base their memories on the stupid things that they did previously.

Story 3 (Lawyer Story): There was an update where OP acknowledged he was the AH and apologised to his niece who also apologised for breaking the rule. OP was also able to explain to the niece about the importance of confidentiality and how to be a lawyer, so they were able to have a bonding moment over it.

Story 3: Op you're not a butthole for having boundaries however you are a butthole for the over the top extreme reaction way to scar a kid for life. When I am out with friends, I'm even more diligent about it. Plus all my friends don't know about it. I can't wrap my head around someone "forgetting" to take their meds, or not communicating their boundaries to the point of holding back others.

I think the right reaction to the lawyer story is to explain to the niece, who clearly looks up to OP, that lawyers need to keep certain things private and can't have anyone else, not even family members, see them, that it's probably the most important part of a laywer's job. Then have her delete the pictures and lead her out of the room. And lock the friggin door next time.

Story 2, I have lifelong joint pain that got pretty bad in high school. During school amusement park trip, I was in a group of 4 people. I also get really motion sick (unrelated to the joint pain). I was having a pretty rough joint day, despite taking care to try to avoid it. You know what happened when the group wanted to go on a spinny roller coaster? I sat out patiently with everyone's bags. It gave me a chance to rest and let everyone else do the fun rides. And in turn? They helped us look for tamer rides that I'd enjoy, even though they were out of the way. This woman in the story just wants everyone to do what she wants. Misery loves company? And none of that ableist nonsense. She's leading herself into flare-ups and then taking everyone down with her mid-event instead of sitting it out. OP NTA, at all.

Lawyer office story: I don't think the lawyer is a butthole at all. Sure, he shouldn't have yelled or sworn at her, but she was given one rule and one rule only: stay out of my office. Maybe he felt that at 13 she could have simply complied with that one regulation in his home. To be compliant and she let herself in there to take pictures around sensitive documentation. Many have argued that he should have had a lock on the door or had the papers filed away. The guy lives alone. Again, it's obvious that he expected his sister and niece to have more respect for his house rules. I've heard this story before. I know that her mother totally brushed aside and excused her behavior by saying she was “just a kid.” Showing what a spineless wimp the guy is, he apologized and took them to dinner at an expensive restaurant. Smh. The niece clearly has no respect for boundaries zero regard for the word no being a complete sentence and nothing resembling a sense of accountability. Given the reaction of her mother, I'm not surprised she doesn't understand these concepts. After all, how can children learn these realities of the world when even their own parents don't understand or, more accurately, don't care?
