Disregard the trauma, no empathy, sympathy and trying yet succeeding to control another's relationship is selfish, hell no. If your father has set the standard for what healthy and supportive is, why would you settle for less? It's OK to not give a first boyfriend or date a second chance, if your alarm bells are going off listen to them.

Sometimes alarm bells are false alarms. Her bf is a bit insecure and not used to seeing a family dynamic where they actually care for one another beyond just coexisting. He needs to learn to accept them for who they are and learn to discuss concerns with her and accept what she has to say. So he has some growing up to do. She does as well, because a relationship is a two-way street, and making an ultimatum like that so quickly without enough of a reason is immature. He felt he had valid concerns and in a way he did because it was something that seemed unusual to him and no one was to blame for that. She went nuclear instead of trying to work things out by giving him a chance to learn more.
@DaniS398

@@Wolfie713 she's not obligated to give him a chance while he's learning and growing up. I think her only mistake was going back to him after she broke up AND giving into his demands. The fact that she changed her dynamic with her dad is going to make her bf think he was right all along.

There's one thing that I want to point out in that last story that just adds to the weirdness for me. The fact that he wanted her to wear RED at the wedding. Traditionally, in marriages where the bride isn't a virgin or that it's her second+ marriage, she'd wear off-white or cream. Not that that even matters anymore these days. But it just adds on to the strangeness of the guy's feelings towards the matter for me. If he was supposedly going the traditional route, RED is NOT the traditional color. He either was ignorant of this, or there's some other agenda going on. (Like maybe he was trying to embarrass her, or make himself look good?) Who knows! OP dodged a toxic one, and I hope she finds happiness.
@danielmorton1606

Even then, it's a made up tradition. People wearing white for weddings copied Queen Victoria, and it was a sign if wealth. Cream type colors were prefered until the 30s. Like a lot of Americana, it took off in the 50s with mass production. Thats when it began to have that association, but likely because white was already being associated with clean at the time and used for purity in the Catholic church.

@@lynneconklin917 Interesting thing too, is that Queen Victoria chose white not to represent virginity. I miss my late Step-father Hamish, he would teach me about cooking, boating, more morbid topics like autopsies (I was a weird kid and he was a former medical examiner, he left after being ME for the Piper Alpha disaster), he loved that other people would be creeped out but not me, I found everything he had to teach fascinating. I actually do not see the issue with paternity tests. If a guy is going to sign a legally binding document he should be able to ask for a paternity test before signing it. But besides that point, I do agree. Last dude seemed really hung over on something that, on the grand scheme of things, is not bad. Assuming OP is telling the truth, one partner before marriage really is not bad.
@abiean222
@abiean222 Год назад
@@DanielGonzalez-qk6sd there is an implication that you don't trust your partner if you ask for a paternity test. that is a huge insult, and can be seen as a projection. after all, if your partner didn't cheat or display suspicious behavior where did the idea of her cheating come from unless you are the one who is cheating? honestly, just use the justification of worrying that your baby got switch in the hospital and ask that she take a maternity test too. if she doesn't want you to take a paternity test if she takes a test, then use the story of the woman who got a maternity test done on the baby she birthed only for it to turn out that she was a chimera and in the slim chance that happens what are the odds that both of you are chimeras?
@DanielGonzalez-qk6sd
@DanielGonzalez-qk6sd Год назад
@@abiean222 So I agree there is a social perception about paternity tests. However, a guy should still ask. Why are we, as a society, taught and told to be as thorough as possible with legal documentation? Why is getting second and third opinions on life-altering decisions always encouraged? Why is informed consent encouraged (not just sexually by the way)? Yet, as a society men that want a paternity test are chastised? This is how I personally see it. A guy is allowed to ask for a paternity test. This is him making sure that the legal documentation he is about to sign has been signed to the best of his ability. That he got a second opinion, is informed of the status of the child, and has been thorough enough to ensure this life-altering decision is understood. As such, any woman that throws any fit about this or feels any way shows how she feels. By giving a man flak for wanting to do a paternity test. The woman shows she wants the man to make a choice that is not informed, not thought out, and she rather him be ignorant. That is a red flag in the highest form. So, yes, there is a perception of paternity tests. I think that perception is wrong and those that follow it are making themselves out to liars and manipulators. Why? Because if a woman truly understood what it meant for a guy to get a paternity test and she has not cheated; she would not feel or act the way a majority of women do in that situation.
@abiean222
@abiean222 Год назад
@@DanielGonzalez-qk6sd dude, it all comes down to do you trust your partner to not cheat on you? if you say no, you don't trust them to not cheat on you, then don't have kids with them! its not about making an informed decision, its about how you don't trust your partner to be faithful. if you ask for a paternity test you are admitting that you don't trust your partner. you'll need to deal with the consequences of that action, so don't be surprised if your partner leaves you.

#1 is kind of a teachable moment for the boyfriend. If you're going to enter into a serious relationship with someone, that means you're going to need to accept their family as well. The guy doesn't seem malicious, I mean he did take it directly up with OP in private so it's clear he's not trying to cause trouble. But if this is how OP's family acts, and he's serious about the relationship, he's going to need to come to grips with how affectionate OP's family is. It's unreasonable to expect an entire family to change their behavior because it's not how you grew up.

The first story surprised me when we got to the daughters statement; at some point I was so messed up that I almost ruined my mother and step father's relationship🥲 When I first met him I was quite young but also recently traumatized by someone close so I was clinging to just about any decent male figure as my father wasn't quite there... In return tho I ended up disturbed by plenty more men and even eventually my father leaving my step father as the only somewhat sane man I could stand and even then I was a jerk because of how many men that had disturbed me... I'm not perfect, he's not perfect, none of us in my "story" are but he's slowly become someone that I'm close with👍

I never heard Giga Dad’s description before! That makes the story so much better😂

I think the boyfriend from the 1st story should explore the possibility of maybe being bisexual cause...to be threatened to that level by your gf's dad??? You have to be at least a little bit genuinely attracted to him Yk, 🎶be who you are🎶 and all that

That last story made me think of this fun fact: White wasn't a symbol of purity, it was a symbol of wealth. Wedding dresses weren't formal and white fabrics were hard to clean in the old days. No brides wore white until 1840 when Queen Victoria wore white to her wedding and not her coronation dress. Brides started copying that and the rest is history

To the last story: girl run. This man needs therapy. This will become a problem later again and again. Edit:happy she did. well done!

The thing that gets me about the last post is that it was only when Queen Victoria broke tradition and wore white, to marry Prince Albert, did wearing white become traditional. Those 2 were at it like rabbits, so I very much doubt she was "pure" when they married. Before their wedding, it was common to just wear a nice dress, or your Sunday best.

The first story is kinda beautiful that he's taught her to respect and love herself enough to just drop a guy she clearly liked. This just goes to show how great of a family unit she has. The dad has shown her to respect herself alot. It's sad that they got back together tbh but I do hope she realizes that she doesn't have to change herself to succeed in a relationship though.

1.OP did his damndest to properly build a real step parent relationship. Her stayed firm in trying when the kid hated him,and He didn't do the whole "I'm your dad now, You'll call me dad" thing 2, yeah I'm glad that parents did the right thing in the update. 3. Lol, OP dodge a bullet. White being a sign of purity is a recent thing ; Wearing white showed you had money and blue was the wedding color.

A White wedding dress is a Victorian tradition, where common people copied Queen Victoria when she married Albert. Where she wore a white, "simple" lace, flowing wedding dress and for possibly the first time it was done in history. Only in the mid 20th century was the whole "purity" aspect added to the tradition.

When chad dads daughter mentioned 2 people at the table think chaddad is hot I just imagined him raising his hand "point of order. Three people think I'm hot. I mean I do own a mirror" Edit: CALLED IT!

I can relate. My dad is 6 ft 3 in tall 215 lbs of solid muscle. He is a world-class knife maker and does his own blacksmith work. I hear from total strangers how handsome my dad is and he can be very intimidating. He served in Vietnam and became a prepper to deal with PTSD. He is kind and would help anyone if he can. Just dont piss him off! As a teen I put the look in his eye that said you are about to die. Mom can hold her own and is a retired county officer but dad is her minion.
