I never did deep research into it, but when I was in school I had enough critical thinking skills to wonder how much old myths and legends were used to explain mental illness and other things people did not understand or thought abnormal for the time. Witch's for example were what nonconforming women or anyone deemed unusual were referred to and many instances of demons were actually mental illnesses people had no way of dealing with at the time. I remember reading in school that many weather phenomenon were seen as Divine intervention and the like in many past cultures.

@@Pooky1991 What are you mean by "nonconforming"? "nonconforming" to what exactly? Witches were usually women who had knowledge about astrology (stars and stuff), maths, herbs/medicine. And also future tellers and fortune tellers as well. But basicly any women who were smarter than what the men want were labeled as a witch. And after an amount of time people did report random people for "being a witch" out of pure paranoia because of church propaganda. (If you want to know more about witch trials then you should look up a book called "Malleus Maleficarum".) And for the demons part..... demons usually were believed to be evil spirits. Demons never were a depiction of mental illness. Okay, it was not impossible to see seizures (which not always caused by mental illness) as demonic possession, but only because the body's unintentional movement. That's all. There is no "we can't deal with this, let's call it a demon" kinda thing.

I would just like to point out, in regards to more mental health awareness, that the names have changed a lot over the centuries. ADHD isn't a new concept, for example. It's been traced back as far as the 1700s, maybe even earlier, and its had multiple name changes since then. Same with cancer, it used to be called the wasting disease, among the many names it's been known over the centuries. These things have always been around, they were either just considered eccentricities, untreatable diseases, "being stubborn" and a whole host of other things. Some of these things were even associated with witchcraft once upon a time. They're not new concepts, they're not caused by vaccines, and in 20 to 50 years, the names and treatments will likely have vastly changed yet again as technology and knowledge continues to advance.

Also, a few interesting dates taken from The History of Vaccines site: 1000 - early Chinese inoculation 17th century - inoculations throughout the world to avoid disease 18th century - variolation, later inoculation with smallpox then cowpox 19th century - beginning of vaccination 1853 - mandatory vaccination in UK 1879 - first laboratory vaccine 1914 - typhoid vaccination becomes common in the USA Baby boomers weren't the first to be vaccinated, not by any stretch of the imagination. Also, if a third to a half of children don't die from childhood diseases, they're bound to have other diseases later on... can't die of autoimmune disease if you died of the measles at 1yo

There are examples of names already changing in light of new and better research. What people call "multiple personality disorder" was actually renamed to "dissociative identity disorder" back in 1994. Ofc, DID long ago was called demons, possessions, "being stubborn", "the nerves", etc. To anyone not well versed in psychology, MPD is easily confused with switching moods/codes when the real infliction is on an entirely different level. Creating a new name that fits more in line of what scientists learned and harder to misconstrue. Earnestly enjoyed "Sybil" based on the real-life case of a women that recovered from DID.
@serenity1378
@serenity1378 2 года назад
@@synckar6380 Interesting addition is that now forcing integration of all the identities isn't considered mandatory. If the system functions well as a system, if there is no harm to the collective entity, it's sometimes considered better to leave that system in place - especially if it grew out of a need to protect from traumatic experiences. A lot of psychology is shifting away from "everything different is a disorder" to "only if it causes harm to the self or others do we classify it as a disorder and actively try to treat it as such". It makes a lot more sense that when dealing with clients with huge, complicated pasts and a lot of overlapping experiences, you don't waste time on something that is beneficial or neutral, and focus your efforts on the things that are causing them harm. This paradigm shift in psychology can only lead to good things. A lot of people who avoided therapy because they didn't want aspects of themselves to be dissected and destroyed, or felt that they couldn't trust therapists not to medicalize and label every part of who they are, will be a lot more open if they know that, if they make the case that a part of who they are is beneficial, it doesn't *have* to be "fixed", and they won't be forced to be a certain way if they want to get help for other things.

@@TheRepublicOfDixionconderoga It could be, but the density of people in a city is way too important people in a city to feed even a fraction of them with these fruits. In France, a vegetarian person (which is the cheapest in terms of land use) requires 1,200 m² of land to grow their food. An average French, 4,200 m²... for each person. Another problem is that the pavement would be dirty quite fast and would require an extra amount of work to clean (without accounting for the accidents related to people sliding on rotting fruits on the ground). That is an incentive for the cities (those who would actually spend the money) to not put trees that would grow fruits.

Also, asphalt in countries where there's a huge variance in summer and winter temperatures has to deal with it even worse.

In all seriousness though, I don't think people give kids enough credit. When I was a kid I was very curious and remember reading alot of non-fiction, playing alot of educational games, and even read kid encyclopedias. I see similar understanding and curiosities in my nieces and nephews (heck they know stuff I didn't know at their age). I feel like people underestimate how much children are able to understand and it makes seeing so many places attack schools for teaching pretty much anything considered a tough subject infuriating to me.

2:50 Technically it's only partially true. HEK 293 are a line of pluripotent stem cells harvested from a fetus that had died in the womb. These cells are used by countless laboratories around the world and are responsible for many of the advancements we've made since then. This particular case, with Senomyx, the company used these cells to grow taste receptors like a human would have on their tongue, and test how they respond to various additives. None of the cells actually make it into the food itself.

About the "women coming before men" thing, while not true in the way that loony was saying, is true of how we form. Most mammal fetuses start with their reproductive organs and genitals in a 'female' configuration, and change to their final position during the second trimester based on hormones. This is why genitals and chromosomes can present differently, even baby bodies can produce too much or not enough of the wrong thing. It's so comon about 1 in only 2500 people have chromosomal anomalies. That's 0.04% of the earth's population. 2,800,000 people. That's the whole population of Mumbai. Edit: wanted to add since many people mentioned that fish and amphibians will change sex as adults, Yes! Some do this to keep balance within a population, others as part of their natural life cycles.

9:53 A note about the average IQ being 100: When they first standardize the IQ test, they set a group of people to take it and then set whatever level of performance is the average at 100. So today's 100 IQ is not necessarily the same as 100 IQ of, say, twenty years ago because average capability changes but it's still defined as 100. This means that if, for example, there are 100 questions on the IQ test and in 1990 the average tester was able to correctly answer, say, 50 questions, then 50 questions becomes the benchmark for 100 IQ. If, however, they re-set the test in 2000 and the average tester is able to correctly answer 60 questions, then 60 questions becomes the new benchmark for 100 IQ. It works the same way if the average tester's answer rate goes down, as well. Keep in mind that a person with an IQ below 80 is considered to have a learning disability, so this sort of shifting scale can create problems for people, never mind the deep cultural bias built into these tests.

Fruit trees in Public Spaces is a topic I wish you'd gone a little deeper with. There's some very interesting research done in many cities (Seattle, WA & Asheville, NC in the US & there are examples in Europe as well). I agree that pickers need to be aware if an area has been sprayed with pesticides but there are many plants that require little to no treatment, especially when you aren't trying to optimize yield or grow large monocultures (like on a traditional farm). At the minimum, it's important to support community gardens in densely populated & lower income area. The biggest inconvenience is unpicked or ruined fruit can attract pests, and as a public project would need management / labor that you can't count on from the general public just because the city put in a tree.

I once took part in a photography workshop that focused on nature. We went to the forest and I assumed "ok, we're gonna take some pictures and then go". But NO! The woman who did the workshop first stopped at a tree and told us to put our hands close to the leaves. If we concentrated enough we would be able to "feel the energy of the tree". According to her it could tell us stories. That already made me feel really weird, but I accepted it as a one time occurence. NO again! Just a couple hundred meters further down the path she pointed at a lage group of trees a little bit away. She said: "Can you see the mist coming from the trees? That's the oxygen they produce." It was fog... It was the middle of fall and it was foggy! FFS! FOG! I quit after that

Isn’t the “I had dream that god gave me of giants and wild humans behind a huge ice wall” part of the plot of Game of Thrones? Or a weird spin off of Attack on Titans? I never watched either, but it reminds me of what I’ve heard… Great video, love it!!

@Waltzin' Matilda Yeah exactly. Different disorders and diseases became more prevalent, because people don't just straight up die from them, anymore, and with some that aren't directly life-threatening, they are being studied now and the knowledge about them becomes more available, as opposed to parents just hiding away or abandoning the child that was born with them. Also the average lifespan from a few hundred years ago isn't thirty-fourty because people didn't live longer than that, it's because there were so freaking many infant and child deaths. It's actually pretty grim to read history about how, for example, it was typical to name at least some of your children with the same name, because it was to be expected some of them wouldn't grow into adulthood...

I was just talking to my grandparents about the reason for overpopulation was is not because too many kids today, it's because the older generation had many kids to make sure some would survive, but then suddenly they all did and they all lived longer. They then told me about how their parents and grandparents had lots of sibling that died between age 0 to 5.

Regarding the fruit trees- where I live, we used to have crabapple trees around the large pond in the center of the town. They made a huge mess in the fall, when all the fruit ripened and dropped all over the sidewalks! About 10 years ago they chopped them all down and replaced them with non fruiting trees. So there’s that.

9:32 “Science Confirms That People Absorb Energy From Others” This is actually a real phenomenon! Also as someone pointed out elsewhere: that is also how sound works. Someone goes brrrrrr, someone's ears catch that brrrrr. Here's a cool fact though to make up for being a month late: the Satyrini butterflies have a specialized wing vein that captures sound waves at a similar enough register to humans that they can hear us speak and reacted to the scientists observing them and talking. Most insects, if they have hearing, don't hear on frequencies that us humans use.

However, you have to admit the ancient Mesoamerican Ball Game (with the court at Chichen Itza being the Madison Square Garden of its time) was a pretty boss sport/ritual that easily tops all today's athletic ventures for pure hype. Basketball as redefined by MK's Shao Khan and animism religion, where multi-season/multi-million contracts give way to simply keeping your head firmly attached to your body. Managing hip, thigh, and butt strains, sprains, and deep bruising without the help of keyhole surgery, Shaq's IcyHot, and nutritional advisors, but bloodletting, ayahuasca, and (perhaps) poppy juice. And, sadly, no chance of starring in your own WB/Looney Tunes crossover motion picture and immortalized in its masses of merch. Actually, I'd adore seeing how they would script and blend "anything goes" toon logic and physics with the ritual brutality of playing the MBG. "Space Jam 3: Toltecnical Foul", or "Play in the Incan Paint", "LoonAztec Llamajama"..."Oh! Mayan! Goodness!"?

However, I just sorta forget about the book entirely and never done research to see if the claims are true or not. I was a sickly baby and doctors didn't think I would survive to my first birthday. Modern medicine kept me alive. I would have been a infant mortality statistic if I was born earlier. Maybe part of the reason there are more kids with chronic medical conditions is because measles, mumps, and all the other diseases we vaccinate against didn't get the chance to kill them off.
