Seriously. That was a wonderful story and a good way to actually show racists how to be a better person. I get so tired of all this shit about how people should be allowed to physically assault anyone. I get it, they aren't good people and it would feel good to sock them one. But that just helps them try to prove their point. You need to rise above it and be the better person so that way you can show the next generation exactly who's got the wrong idea.

(This goes on awhile) Oh, that's something I couldn't tolerate (I should clarify I'm white guy) but I'm not totally proud of how my story explains why. I'm from Birmingham, England, and while we live up to the stereotype of being idiots, we do not let racists have a free pass. I remember one time, in a decent pub, a skinhead and his cronies loudly called a black girl a [n-word] whore because she didn't want to have a drink with them and all hell broke loose. Those morons suddenly found they were surrounded by 25 guys (outnumbering the morons 5 to 1) when this giant Jamaican man, our new de facto leader (the accent gave it away) asks if they wanted to repeat that. The skinhead doubles down and says "What, is that [n-word] [b-word] your [s-word]?" (The girl fled, so that was no longer a concern). The Jamaican didn't even have enough time to fly into a rage, a skinny Indian guy punched the skinhead right in the balls instantly. Seeing their "esteemed" leader go down, the rest of his group tried a Thermopylae and got stomped. I was busy pummeling one of the cronies with the grateful help of a 3rd-gen Chinese guy (I found out later, turns out kicking the crap out of a bunch of racists is a bonding experience) when the cops showed up. Luckily for me and our group of impromptu vigilantes, no one had died and the skinhead and his cronies were part of a known hate group. So the police charged all but one of the 25 with affray (this would be known as disturbing the peace in most other countries, I got really lucky only being charged with that). We took it, pled guilty, and got community service. The one that didn't was our de facto leader, he did a number on one of the tougher cronies and was charged with assault. He only got only 3 years (way more generous than my country normally allows) but was released after a year, in part because of being a model prisoner. The other major part was because the skinhead and his cronies turned on their hate group for reducing the charges they would face, they gave the police everything they needed to shut the hate group down. As such our leader was shown leniency for his role in the matter. I'm not ashamed of being a thug against racists (honestly, my brothers and I kick the hell out of each other all the time over petty stuff, it basically a type of sign language at this point, so I think of "percussive" maintenance as normal) but I still feel guilty for the Jamaican guy being sent to prison for something we didn't start.

Instead he stood up and gave a good veiw to the children. The father and mother are going to die sad lives and that's just a fact. But the kids have hope because they'll have the veiw of Charles being so kind and nice. The fact that they waved goodbye says a lot. It's new times and there still might be a lot of complete morons in this world unfortunately but the fact that in the lives of those children people will tell them that racism is bad and people that are racist are bad people. That moment will and should be a key point in their lives that they realize daddy was wrong about what he said about people. The kids are the only important factor in that scene because the adults will refuse to believe anything other than what they want. I once had a professor that talked about how sad she was getting older because so many of her friends stopped being able to see another person's point of veiw. She would emphasize always putting yourself in another person's shoes. That you should always look for a new perspective, she was by far one of the kindest and thoughtful people I got to meet. I hold her teachings to heart knowing fully well that when I'm old, when you're old, when everyone is old, each of us will either know or be the person that is being the moron that refuses to accept the reality of being wrong. I can only hope that that lesson will help me not be such a person when I'm in that age. Charles did an important thing and he should be applauded for such patience and generosity to a person that deserves no more than a punch to the head. Charles is a better person than a lot of people in this world and we really do need more people as kind, smart, and patient as he is.

ill be honest, my first thought in the situation wasnt racism. i thought they were being robbed, or something. but when he explained the situation, i got it right away. i still cant figure the mother out though. was she a racist as well, or was she afraid of her husband? either way, if i had been Charles, i would have lost it and ended up back in prison. i was taught hate from the moment i was born. the word black didnt even exist. literally. tires were called _N****R Rings_ where i grew up. when i was in kindergarten, i had literally never heard the word black. the teacher was teaching us colors with crayons. she held up a black one and asked me what color it was. i said it was N****R. she went pale, and took me straight to the principals office. i had no idea what i had done. the kicker is that the principal was a black woman. when she sat me down to talk to me it didnt take her long to realize the situation. she didnt yell or call me a racist. she just explained to me that the N word is a bad word. i started crying because i thought i was in a lot of trouble. she comforted me, and told me that everything was ok, but that i needed to not use that word anymore. she understood that a 5 year old child had been taught hate, and wasnt angry at the child. she was an amazing woman. im 38 now. i moved away from that environment 20 years ago, and am still struggling to unlearn the bullshit that was pounded into my brain. its not easy, and to be honest it still comes out of my mouth more casually than hello comes out of most everyone else's mouths. but im still trying to fight it.

Terra_the _Nightingale I agree it’s sad people hold onto stuff that happened before my generation. I mean honestly people in my area and of my age group act like they KKK never stopped existing. It takes so much energy to hate but only a small amount for compassion. My girlfriend did something to me recently that made me hate her to the core but reflecting back onto it ( it took a lot of effort to be mad at her ). I know it’s not the same but it can be applied to any hate. Bottom line all races and colors have been enslaved or treated horribly at one point. We as the current generation / people alive need to make an effort to be like Charles and be better to ourselves , our children and everyone as a whole. My boss did time and was “ sorta “ like Charles I use that term loosely because he did not have that much patience. But I have to say I trust that man way more than the other average joe! You can either breeze through them all with coolness nonchalance or show them the complete opposite reaction of what they're trying to instigate, just like how Charles did it. Practice makes perfect, & instill calmness & desire for peace within you as you interact with everyone. Be effective in defense against negativity by staying positive, & never lash out when they provoke you. Ignoring threats will work if they know you actually meant it. & show, don't tell. It doesn't mean you have to let them trample all over you & you still have to defend your own wellbeing however you know how, just be careful & be vigilant. But if you're surrounded by too much of those people who never want to change their views, there are always options you can choose to make for yourself. I wish all the best to you, sir, & take care.

That's crap and doesn't accomplish anything except more bullying . Black people, we don't have to accept being treated like that, we don't have to be nice to racists, you don't have to forgive racists and it is certainly not our job to change a racist or their spawn. If anyone abuses you, they must suffer the consequences., name and shame them, make them lose their jobs etc. Do they tell a person in abusive relationship to smile and be happy and forgive while being abused because it's honorable or they're being the bigger person? No they tell her to get the authorities and protect herself. So screw all those people saying Charles is awesome, he was a victim of abuse and that family needs to pay and so does anyone who feels to the need to disrespect a person of a different color.

roro zizi no, I disagree with that last statement in saying to “screw the people that think Charles was awesome.” Do I think racists have it coming to them if they happen to get beat by the person they put down? Oh most definitely. I myself would probably not be calm and would react angrily, because that is a completely justified response. BUT I still think Charles was awesome because he stuck it to the man by showing his KIDS an example of how wrong their dad is. Do I think the dad should learn that what he’s doing is wrong? Yeah honestly. But I also believe that showing the kids just what a douche their father is, is just that much sweeter, so no those people saying Charles is awesome are correct. Was he a victim of abuse? Yes and hopefully that dad will get what’s coming to him, whether it’s from getting beat up or losing his wife or job or even better: to *see his kids become good people instead of racists.* Damn was Charles a pro, and I hope he gets what he wants in life.

Those kids would learn that mistreating someone has consequences, whether it be not getting your meal or your father losing his job, and not necessarily getting physical. What those kids will grow up thinking is, i can be as mean and as racist as i want and i'll still get away with it. They should learn that if you're racist you'll pay and a lot of people are learning that too late in life cause their folks got away with being racist and nothing happened to them and they thought those old rules would apply to them and get surprised when they lose their jobs/ lose scholarships/ lose sponsors and colleges revoke acceptances. Why? cause they thought racism had no consequences.

I’m not a violent person, but when it comes to that level of disrespect of another human it’s hard to understand. I just really hope for those kids to grow up better than their father. I think it's hilarious to listen to these stories as they often fail to realise that things just need to get done, even if the more practical solution isn't available at the moment.

I dunno, I think the first story's funny, and also strangely wholesome. Charles put a lot of effort into breaking a cycle of hatred, which not only stiffs the racist father's stupidity (which is the funny part), but also could be life-changing for the kids (which is the wholesome part). Remember, one interaction can change a life. Charles is honestly a hero, I think.
