That last story was epic. My husband refused to get a cellphone until I pointed out that he didn't have to tell anyone at work that he had one. That thought had never occurred to him. Only a handful of people (family and minister) knew about his new cellphone for nearly five years.

The IT guy that hated cell phones is exactly why I hate them. For years and years, every vacation I ever had was ruined by "emergency" calls because I was required to answer them. My revenge was they had a meeting where they wanted me to get a bunch of computers and monitors for the manufacturing floor to track production easier. I ordered the MOST EXPENSIVE equipment I could find and they bought it. I set it all up and then quit. EDIT: I was the IT guy for almost 22 years at that point, but I never worked IT again.

Remember: if you're working a set amount of hours and they drop your hours by a lot, you almost certainly qualify for unemployment. That'd called "constructive dismissal" and works even if you "quit" to go find a job with more hours. Bosses think it's a loophole but really it's not

Its the same here in Australia. Back when I worked full time they kept lowering the hours of another guy and giving them to another worker. Well, back then you could make around the $1250 per fortnight, every 2 weeks before you got nothing from unemployment. The guy didnt know that and I informed him he could go and get unemployment when his fortnightly waves hit the 1200 mark, his hourly rate was the same as mine so I knew how much he was making, plus they dropped his hours below the full time and it made him a part time worker, nothing he could do about it since he wasnt a manager or working midnight to dawn. So he goes and sees about getting unemployment, along with rent assistance, and went on from there. Well part of the conditions of keeping unemployment was to also be looking for work, since his hours were above 25 hours there really wasnt much he could get, until he got an interview where they wanted him to start immediately. Well, the worker which had been getting his hours suddenly just stopped turning up for work, we later found he'd been deported for working while on a visitors visa, but the workplace never got informed. Which meant that the manager had to go and up the hours of the guy they had been shafting, only to have him go "Oh, didnt I tell you, my last day is tomorrow." The manager went right off and I just said "He didnt need to tell you or warn the company, the moment you forced him to apply for unemployment because you kept cutting his hours, he had to start looking for work in order to keep his benefits. Which meant that he doesnt have to give any notice."

@@Ryanthusar Labour laws really need to be taught in high school. So many companies either don't know about workers rights, or worse do, and run right over them. If a company does that, they can become liable for a personal grievance, which is usually an extra payday for the employee. Something minor is usually only a few thousand, but major infractions can go past $20k. Well there's no official upper limit but it's rare to go past $50k but it does happen.

It should be illegal to make someone be on call 24/7 without paying them any extra. Not necessarily for the whole time, but at least when they are called to do work after hours.
@thebladeofchaos
@thebladeofchaos 8 месяцев назад
it is, but the idea is that, if they aren't called, they don't get paid. what should happen is that if OP is called, the company should go 'hey, you did some work, here's some pay for it' and it tends to be an hour mimimum they pay, even if the call is 5 minutes. if over, it's on the normal rate. this is a company trying to play an IT guy and not understanding the exact nature of what they're asking. once they realized that OP understood he wouldn't stop at 'put up and shut up' they realized he'd look into it and it'd go further along, he'd 'make someone pay one way or another'. a lot of companies rely on ignorance to do unethical and illegal practices like this.

Yup I think it is. My brother works IT for ATT and they have strict rotating on call hours for outside of work and he gets paid more if he's on call. People and politeness in the service industry is huge to me, whether you're the customer or the employee. I was in college buying a book from a used, off-hand book store that belonged to the college off-site. Books were easily half the price there. The cashier and I talked the whole time I was in the store, carrying a very friendly conversation. I ended up only purchasing a $4 book with a $10 bill. I was talking to the guy through the whole transaction. He handed me the change and book, I thanked him, and as I was walking to my car, I noticed I had more money in my hand than I had given him. I went back, showed him the change and receipt. He was slightly embarrassed, but thanked me for being honest and returning it, admitting he was distracted and thought it was $100, even showing he had put the bill in the high-bill location in the register. He gave me my correct change, and we parted again. Even though I could've gotten away with it, I have always felt better helping him out versus having the cash itself.

There was one time my sister and I went out to dinner and when the check came, I noticed that two items had been omitted. I flagged down the server, who arrived with manager in tow, and told them that they forgot to add on the two items. I think they were expecting something else from me😂. I got thanked for bringing it to their attention and they brought a new bill out, still not correct, but with a note saying that one item was complimentary for my honesty.

Some of our employees rotate call and are paid extra for those nights whether they receive calls or not. They have to be availabe, near their laptop, so they are compensated. Also, a manager requested a cell phone allowance as she used her personal phone for work after hours and was told to simply not use her phone for work. She still answered calls from employees, but when a text cane from the director who refused to approve a phone allowance, manager ignored it until the next face-to-face meeting in office. TV Story: Honestly i'm starting to think that our monkey brains have trouble dealing with the fact that every communal good is someone's personal or private property nowadays. It's like "this thing is on a communal space, so everybody is allowed to use it" and "I am using this thing, so it's my property" at the same time. Honestly if we had a system where we could each own the things that we use for ourselves, with the stuff that everybody uses belonging to the community, we'd be able to get along a lot better.

I can't tell if you're supporting OP or criticizing them. Would it be fair to say that, either way, OP should have never been generous as to put the TV in the communal space in the first place? I think insisting on some form of communal ownership will just mean that you own nothing, when those who have stuff get tired of being abused, as occurred in this story. I think OP had a pretty good system, providing an advanced schedule for his limited use - not like they randomly lay claim to it.

I cannot tell if you are making a joke or being serious here.... The only people who would naturally act with the "It's in the communal space" are the ignorant and entitled idiots who don't respect ANYONE's property regardless of communal or not. These are the people who have not earned a singular penny for themselves - have not bought anything of theirs - had not had anyone else break their stuff due to misuse - or are just absolute jerks who understand what personal property is but only cares about THEIR property and doesn't give a flip if someone has their own personal property in the same building. If it isn't THEIR's , it's shared. It's just entitled behavior. pure and simple. The same type of entitlement that ruins any and all forms of Commune: "I live here, I don't add anything to the group or community itself, but I live here. Therefore, I have a birth given right to use anything and everything you all share with each other as well. It doesn't matter I never give anything in return, you all said it was for everyone to use. You can't get mad at me cause you all do the work and i just sleep all day and use everything 90% of the time without any work or effort put in to maintain it all; that's YOUR job!" levels of entitlement.
@frostnovaomega1152
@frostnovaomega1152 8 месяцев назад
@@nightdrivenen7909 I was being serious. I do think they are jerks, and basically my comment was theorizing what kinda conditions contribute to that jerk behaviour. Like a „If we all did this, we‘d be having less jerks running around in the long run“ kind of thing.

@@nightdrivenen7909 and on the entitlement thing: I honestly think they don‘t even register that they‘re being hypocritical. They probably even think they‘re being fair. A Malicious Compliance story that happened to me just a few months before the pandemic started: My state was arguing about whether or not they should install one of those idiotic bathroom bills and when I was at the local library, a random nosy lady decided that despite having a purse and boobs the size of watermelons I apparently looked "too manly" to be in the women's bathroom and while I was in my stall, demanded that I prove that I was actually a woman. Initially, I told her to F off but she kept banging on the door and screeching. Alrighty then. Guess who had entered the bathroom because Satans' Sacrificial Waterfall had come to visit and a new pad was needed? I put on a new pad, pulled up my pants, opened the door and shoved the bloody pad directly into her hands before saying "Proof enough for ya?" She screamed, threw the pad on the floor and bolted. I just picked up the pad, wrapped it and put it in the little trash cans in the stalls.

About the comment said in the story about what could you hide under the dress, It really depends on a dress in the story it might have been shorter but there is a Finnish Romani dress that is common to see on Finnish Romani woman that has a wire frame. They have gotten a common stereotype about shoplifting since they are often found hiding products under there. I have heard of some that have made special frames that they could hang multiple 24-packs of bear under there and that someone even shoplifted a chainsaw that was hidden like this. More often there is a special layer/pocket that they throw stuff into then come to register with other stuff and happen to have forgotten wallets and say that they will go get it from the car and leaving all the products on to the register for cleanup as they flee the scene.

Calls from usually indicate that an issue is actually important in my workplace and as such are pretty rare, but if I get a text from a coworker (or even some of my managers, because mine are pretty cool), I usually answer it, but not always. The texts often include "if you have the chance" in them to make it clear that we shouldn't feel obligated to stop whatever we're doing to answer. We all know that those not on the clock have no obligation to be working, so we don't expect it of eachother. But we help each other out because it makes all of our jobs easier. Sometimes a coworker misplaced a set of keys. Instead of dragging down a manager to get a spare that we can use while they track it down and now I have to report back to a manger to get the spare put away safely, it makes more sense to text the last person who had them first to see if they remember where they went. Saves us all time. Wish more workplaces operated like that.

The second story reminds me of a time i was in A school with the navy for AECF, I already had an extensive knowledge of computers (this was in 1999), I was fixing a laptop for one of the commanders that was on post but not stationed there. My CO laid into me for probably 10 min straight until said commander walked in. Commander interrupted the LtJg that was laying into me and set him straight. Considering everyone in my class was just beginning to learn what a pc was, and I could actively run the IT dept during the first week, the Cmdr instantly took a liking to me. The LtJg never raised their voice to me again and I was issued orders to change my deployment after A school was done, and I would complete C school somewhere else. Turns out the Cmdr that I helped really liked me and personally had new orders for me to join him on his station instead of letting me get lost in the pool of other AECF personnel that didn't know where the power switch was (his words).

Yeah, as a former 1st Sergeant you can get someone to do something immediately without yelling in their face. But as I can guess, this is in a different service than I was, and had I needed to get involved with that type of task, I would’ve asked some questions first. But again, different service, different methods 😏

Story 1 reminds me of one of my first jobs at a fast food restaurant where the manager told an employee to do something but then one of the kitchen supervisors, who didn’t know the manager told him to do this, got angry at the employee and screamed at him for “doing extra work when I need you.” The manager was there when he said this and spoke up. One thing was different though, the supervisor didn’t back down. He started screaming at the manager, his own boss, saying he doesn’t care what his badge or the paperwork say, he knows nothing about the business and thus has no right to interfere. He got fired after he said, and I quote, “You’re lucky I’m in a good mood today, or your face would be on that grill right now!” At least the idiots in the first story and related comment were smart enough to know when to back down.

TV story - this happened to me. I supplied everything in the house that was communal. From the fridge and TV to every damn knife in the draw. I was using the TV once and they said they wanted to watch a show so I had to stop. Another time they complained about how I was using up "communal space" in the fridge... that I paid for and the item was shared (I just bought it because of course I did). Safe to say, I don't live with them anymore and I made SURE to take all my stuff a month before my lease ended so that they had to buy all new stuff of there own.

To be honest the manager in the first story was doing his job correctly. If there is a policy against fixing personal laptops during your work it doesn't matter if it's the CEO's personal laptop because it's just not allowed. The CEO is a hypocrite for expecting exeptions to be made just for him, when he would certainly reprimand if not fire anyone else who did the exact same thing.
@tatkkyo9911
@tatkkyo9911 8 месяцев назад
Not really he's paying for work to be done. When someone else's personal stuff gets fixed on the clock he's paying for it instead of them. Also the laptop could be one he dose business for the company on as ceo he likely was able to chose what ever computer he wanted.
@Nioco2
@Nioco2 8 месяцев назад
@@tatkkyo9911 Unless the CEO is also the owner of the company (which is not the case in many companies) he's an employee like anybody else and even if he was the owner employees work for and are paid by the company, not the owner. So if it's not in the company's interest to fix that laptop it should not be allowed. If the laptop was important for the CEO's work OP would have pointed that out instead of stressing that it was clearly his personal computer. Apart from that it is also morally wrong to hold yourself to lower standards just because you have more power and worsens morale among your employees.
@tatkkyo9911
@tatkkyo9911 8 месяцев назад
@Nioco2 that's only if the company this publicly traded. Given the details, it's unlikely that the company is publicly traded.
@Nioco2
@Nioco2 8 месяцев назад
@@tatkkyo9911 If that's the case the other points still apply. Another thing to consider is that employees don't sell their labor unconditionally. They sign a contract that entails what work they are getting paid for and I am willing to bet that personal repairs that the CEO/owner is too stingy to hire a repair person for don't fall under the typical employee's responsibilities. Therefore, this is not the kind of work they agreed to perform and get paid for. On top of this, if OP's actual work responsibilities suffered because of these side projects they would certainly catch the flack for it.
@tatkkyo9911
@tatkkyo9911 8 месяцев назад
@Nioco2 those contacts have a terms like "any assigned work" and you have as much point as a volleyball. And like a said the ceo may have computers used for work that arnt the standard that everyone gets. Dude is salary or/and the owner that means work gets done from home. Just cause a computer dosnt look like a work computer dosnt mean work dosnt get done for the company on it. Some companies will let you use your own computer depending what your work is.
