I took a vet assistant certification course. One entire 3 hour class was dedicated to dealing with mental health and possible stressors in the field. One of my professors at one point said that part of the job was knowing when to take a bathroom break or go to grab some paperwork so you can cry away from clients and come back and be professional to their faces

"The Customer is always right in matters of taste" is an old saying from British economist Adam Smith in the mid 1700's. It's only about stocking a business and/or what services a business provides. Basically you sell what your customers want to buy and not what you want to sell. The saying that people mistake "the customer is always right" for is the American saying "The Customer is King" where you have to do anything and everything the customer wants to get a sale.

Story 4: As someone who's attempted self-deletion, I felt so bad for those students! The way that teacher acted just played into the lies that depression tells people. "This pain will never end." Among vet nurses, females are 2.3x, and male vets nurses "win" at being 5 times more likely to attempt. And the scariest thing is, that vet professionals are more likely to succeed on the first try. As someone who has attempted self deletion multiple times, the pain doesnt end, but it does get better. A lot better. I have bad days but i dont hurt myself anymore and i havent wanted to attempt in a year. It takes work and practice but its so worth it. Little tweaks to your daily routine and thoughts will help. You dont have to do what everyone else does. Do what helps you take care of yourself best. My best right now is brushing my teeth and showering thrice a week, doing laundry when i have no underwear left, doing dishes when i have none left, and cooking when i have the energy. Cooking makes me happy. Its not the "american dream" that everyone thinks their life should be, though. I was taught that laundry/chores are every sunday, i cook every night, i brush my teeth and shower every morning and night, i just dont have the energy for that. Do what you can, dont push yourself too hard and burn yourself out. It's okay to take it day by day. It's okay to have bad days. It'll get better, love, i promise 💜 youre worthy of love and happiness

The cheeseburger without cheese story: funnily enough the opposite happened to me before. I once went to a school where the building we had most of our class at was situated the farthest away from any cafeteria or on-campus food places except for the one burger stand, so whenever we had to get a quick snack between our classes, the classes in that building would usually buy from there. So one day, I decided I wanted to get a cheeseburger. This was around the afternoon, it was hot, and I just wanted to get the day done, so I was just going on autopilot at the time. When I went to the burger stand, I asked the guys there for "One cheese, please." I've bought multiple times there and said the same thing every time, I've even heard a bunch of other people order the same way, but I guess because it wasn't too busy when I ordered, the guys there decided to mess with me. They quickly grabbed one slice of cheese from their cooler and presented it to me, "Here you go, miss." Since I was already pretty checked out at the time, the first thing that I thought was that they were quick, so I quickly grabbed my money from my pocket and tried to hand it to the guy, but when I saw what he was holding, I was confused what it was. It wasn't in a paper bag like it usually was, it didn't have buns, and it was yellow all over. I looked at it for a good few seconds before looking at the guy and asking, "What's this?" The guy just chuckled and told me, "It's your cheese. You said you wanted one, right?" That was when I realized what I had said and that they had fully complied to my request. I just laughed because it was pretty funny, and then I clarified that I wanted one cheeseburger, and I got my quick snack in the end. After that day though, I always made sure to ask for "One cheeseburger, please." Just to be sure. 😂

To be fair, most McDonald's burgers are not regular hamburgers. Things like the quarter pounder, Big Mac, McDouble, etc come as cheeseburgers by default, so if you want any of those rather than just the smallest, most basic burger they have on the menu, you have to just order them and ask for no cheese, but still get charged for the cheese. I heard that people do it so they get a freshly made hamburger. They actually want a hamburger, but not one that stood in the shelf for however-long. And if you make a custom order it has to be made fresh. I don't know if it is true, but I believe that is the reasoning behind it.

OMG. I'm a 3rd year vet student (we did our junior surgery lab last semester though, not 2nd year), and that story is soooo familiar. We "had lunch" from 12-1, but surgeries started at 1pm sharp and we were supposed to have all our machinery and supplies set up, and the patient pre-medded and on the prep room table, ready to induce and intubate BY then. They actually did tell us to make sure we eat something so we don't faint on the operating floor, despite having the same expectation OP's school did that we basically ditch our lunch hour to prep lol. Oh, and we also had a super grouchy anesthesiologist in particular, who likes to beeline toward people to yell at them for no reason. They did that to me to when I was in the anesthetist role to demand "why is there so much fluids in that bag" -- when I recalculated how much was SUPPOSED to be in there, step-by-step right in front of them and proving it was correct, they just said "oh" and walked away. No apology for marching over accusatorily like I'd done something wrong when I literally didn't lmao. They also told a couple people, IN THE MIDDLE OF STRESSFUL SURGERY, that they were going to fail them for the day for tiny stupid reasons, like one of them forgot to fill out one line in the physical exam portion of the anesthesia record beforehand. Not a drug calculation. Not the endotracheal tube size. Not the fluid rate. But some little thing from the physical exam box that didn't serve a purpose to look at during the procedure whatsoever. Otherwise, I think our overall experience was thankfully a little better than how OP described theirs; the other clinicians were generally not mean (just that one 🙄) and at least they didn't do crap like grabbing our instruments and making us rescrub. We also had teams of 4 so we had an extra non-sterile person who could go grab anything like that if we needed. TBH it sounds VERY irresponsible to make students just leave the animal under anesthesia for that much longer just 'cause. Our clinicians stressed the importance of getting them in and out in as little time as we could manage, because the longer they're under, the bigger patient safety concern it is.

This is why I love my uni. We get an hour for lunch and a 10 min break in-between lectures and if we want to come in early to the labs we can. No eating or drinking though as it has a lot of chemicals and experiments around but thier always around to help you. Also if hospitals have an 80 hour limit you'd think vets do too, less for the ones in training like these guys.

Abbreviations story: I had the opposite happen. Abbreviations were mandatory. Also, we would now be using jargon to simplify instructions. So now “strip” was a phrase meaning to come clean the delivery remains-shrink wrap, shipping paper, boxes, styrofoam etc- and take it all out at once.) So, “Supervisor or Manager to assist in cleaning the stock room” became “S&M to the back to strip.” It went over REALLY WELL the first time that line was called over the PA system in front of a store full of customers.😂

My wife's best friend is a vet tech. She told us once that the worst thing about being one is not just putting pets to sleep; but the owners not being there for the pet because it's "too emotional" for the owner. Like, don't you want your pet to be as comfortable as possible before crossing the rainbow bridge?? I don't think pets need to have some random stranger be the last thing they ever see. Much love to vets!!

I'm a vet tech and honestly hearing that some out there respects us and appreciates us is so refreshing. I can count on one hand how many times I've been told "I appreciate you." The amount of times I've been cussed out. screamed at, and threatened is so draining. It's no wonder veterinarians and techs have the highest suicide rates. For me, it's not the euths, or abuse cases, it's the people. The woman who screamed at me because she skimmed over the word "minimum" in the estimate and assumed that an international health certificate, exam, vaccines and microchip would only cost $55. She came in screaming and yelling before threatening to sue us because we lied to her, even though we highlighted the minimum of $55 for just the exam and broke down every charge and how we'd waive the exam. She instead cussed me out one last time and left. The man who brought in his dog that had been stung by a bee and was in anaphylactic shock, asked "why would you charge so much? I thought you assholes were supposed to care about animals!" Arguing with us for almost an hour, while I tried to keep his dog alive. The racist clients that won't even look me or my other POC coworkers or are straight rude to us. Or the creeps that hit on my female coworkers, calling ahead specifically to request them as their tech or see if they are in the office. Dr. Google clients that argue for hours before cussing us out and leaving because we don't agree with their own research. I've been bit, scratched, kicked, head butted and had all kinds of bodily fluids shot out at me by dogs and cats, with the scars to prove it, but I can handle that. The clients are what drives me up the wall. Having to explain that I don't have control over the prices, I don't have all the answers, I'm too underpaid, overworked and understaffed to deal with this. I'm 28. I've been at it for almost 6 years and I've aged a decade from the stress. Please, be kind to vets and techs. We can't control the pricing of services and medication, and we can't save every animal.

It was just this simple little dashboard of buttons, like "Start Shift", "End Shift", "Start Break", "End Break", that sort of thing. And the funny thing is it just used whatever the current computer clock said for the time. Which meant if you were late all you had to do was change the clock, punch your card, change the clock back. I was looking into different Vet schools because I love animals, and would want to help them in anyway I can. The first and last school I looked into I had someone give me a tour of the school, and a few classes they had. At one point she mentioned that part of the training included students having to be able to put an animal to sleep even though the animal is completely healthy. I'm not sure if all Vet programs talk about this or not. The lady explained that time, and time again pet owners who are making a huge move in their lives, or are just unable to continue to care for the animal decide to put their pet to sleep to not have to deal with the hassle of rehoming their pet. Apparently, to the owners "It's easier this way." That absolutely broke my heart. After hearing that I stopped looking into becoming a Vet because I was not fine with having to follow through with something like that.

When I was 12 and my sister was 14, she took my dog for a walk. The neighborhood kids surrounded her because she was adorable and they wanted to pet her. My sister couldn't get them away fast enough and they spooked my poor girl, who got off her leash and ran into the road towards my house. Someone who was driving down the street didn't see her and hit her. My sister in a panic grabbed my dog and ran the few feet to our house while screaming and bawling. I ran outside and had a melt down too while the lady who hit her collapsed out her car already crying. One of my neighbors was a vet who ran out with her gear to try to help. She was gone on impact but this sweet woman tried all she could to save her. I vividly remember through my own melt down this vet sitting on our front steps just weeping and petting my dog. Less than 10 years later when my house burned down, she was one of the first people who ran out to help and check on our pets. She checked all of them for smoke inhalation or any other medical effects of the smoke, all while crying herself and showering them in love and affection. Vets are some of the strongest people in the world and I respect them so much. In all those years, I never did know her name but I appreciate her so much for jumping into action both times. Thank a vet, yall. They take on all of our emotional traumas themselves.

On the subject of parking ticket cops, I have a very recent story to share. Not worth republishing, but worth putting here. The other day I was in a small parking garage in my city, and I was in my work vehicle waiting for a call, using the parking garage as shelter. I saw a random person leave in their vehicle, but before doing so, left their parking slip on a part of the parking machine for someone else to use as it still had time left. I saw a parking bylaw officer walk in the garage, and I saw them eyeing a car which may have not had a parking slip. I mentioned the parking slip in the machine to the guy, and the guy, instead of writing a ticket, took the parking slip and put it under the car's windshield wiper. It was a rare wholesome moment, and I was happy to see the bylaw officer wasn't one of the type described near the end of this video.

There was a new pyscharist that just started on the floor and she said like every other new Doctor they wanna "assert their dominance" and they think they know better about patients despite only seeing them for maybe less than 20 minutes in a 24 hour period. This doctor refused to read the notes left by nurses and PCT's and stuff like that. This lady was in a saferoom so she couldn't hurt herself as she was very well safe to say she tried to unalive herself. She didn't try to for 3 days and doctor thought it would be safe to put her in more normal room despite objections from my mom. So they moved her. So what does she do within an hour of being moved. Take the bed sheets and try to hang herself. From the shower in the bathroom in the "normal rooms". Don't worry she was fine. So they moved back into the safety room and the Doctor got chewed out royally by the head psychiatrist of that department for not reading notes. So TL;DR if you are in pysch. the story about vets... I had a neighbor that needs help putting down a dog, because the dog was 28 years old, couldn't hardly walk, couldn't eat, couldn't see, and had no quality of life. the issue was, they couldn't afford a vet ($800 in my area for a vet to put them down. $600 if you go to their office, and $1000+ if your house is more than 20 miles from their office). Additionally, two of my cats (one had a bladder issue that caused urine to back up into his kidneys, resulting in acute kidney failure. Didn't realize anything was wrong until it was too late. the other had early onset feline dementia). I ended up putting all three down (legal in my area, and recommended by my area's vets, as it creates less stress for the animal to only have the owner and known family around). and I have to say... I had mad respect for anyone that is able to handle that as often as they do. I now have a dog of my own, and she's soon to be 4 years old. And every year, on her birthday, I wonder if I'll be able to when the time comes. and that's not counting the other two cats that I had to bury (pancreatic cancer and stroke. both died before my parents knew anything was wrong). There's little worse than having to bury a pet.

Similar to the last story. I was in the Navy and our Division got a new officer Lt.JG IronMaiden (Real b!tc#). Most of our division finished work early in port as our equipment was powered down while in port and only minimal maintenance can be done. Most of our work was cleaning. By noon every thing was done and clean in the division. Our workshop supervisors would usually let us leave for the day as there was nothing else to do. When LtJG IronMaiden found out that 95% of her staff was gone by 1200 to 1300 and she had no "volunteers" for working parties that sometimes pop up in the afternoon, she implemented a policy that everyone had to stay till 1600. We complained that there was no extra work to be done and that it left Sailors idle. Bored Sailors can cause problems. So in correction she implemented a policy that every Sailor must personally ask her to be relieved for the day. My Division had about 40 Sailors so at about lunch time when she headed to the Officer's galley, we would all call, one at a time, to ask for liberty. Three days later the Shop Sups had power again. Not my only story about her but this one fits here. I guarantee she's retired by now and Karening her way through society.

Story 3: At some restaurants and fast food places, they (annoyingly) have the cheese on by default on the menu. Like I could order a "quarter pounder no cheese" but they would hear "quarter pounder *with* cheese" and I won't get what I want anyways. Trust me I've tried this hundreds of times. Every single time. If I just try to order a quarter pounder no cheese or word it like that at all, I always end up getting cheese on it Nowadays you can just order from the app, but if there isn't a "bacon hamburger" on the menu, I'm ordering a "bacon cheeseburger no cheese". I know it's dumb. But it's not my fault the restaurants engrain the idea that everybody wants cheese on their burger. It should be the opposite really, cheese should be the opt IN choice, not the opt OUT one. Some of us are lactose intolerant, and some of us just don't like American cheese.

He thought he was going to walk out of there WITH his best pal, but instead, from a computer in a different room, I watched as the diagnosis was entered into the dog's records, and then I heard the poor guy slam his hands onto the exam table and just started SOBBING and SHOUTING, "NO, NO, NOOOOO." 4th year vet student here. While I haven't experienced anything like being expected to be an hour early to practicals (more like 10 minutes), I still related so hard to that story. Our university also pretends to care about mental health due to the high suicide rate, yet they'll still give us 7-9 hours of lectures a day, have forgotten to schedule time for lunch breaks at times, make us still do pracs in the blazing heat (several students have passed out from this, and I was almost one of them) and last year they were making us do "quizzes" basically every 2 weeks. Also, I'm having to repeat this entire year just because I failed my final exams. I was on a passing grade before that, but I failed 4/5 of my finals (one by only 2 marks) because I just couldn't study the sheer volume of content we're expected to know in the less than 2 weeks I had to study. 3rd story: As someone who grew up severely allergic to cheese I have sympathy for OP, but also food service folks tend to NEED "no cheese stated" very clearly so chances are it's just a habit the folks have when ordering. As a kid I used to say "hamburger" and I'd get cheese, and the person behind the register would be like "well why didn't you tell me no cheese then?!" So I started saying "hamburger no cheese" but then I'd have folks who would instead hear "with cheese" or "cheeseburger" instead since anyone who's done customer service knows all words blur together at a certain point. Those folks would get mad at me and tell me to "just order a hamburger" when the whole reason I was ordering that way was because their coworker gave me shit for not saying things their way last week. Folks who can't have cheese have learned to say the things they do BECAUSE OF food service workers, most of us are just doing what ya'll tell us to do and we don't want to fight about it, we just want to get our food and leave. We don't care if you charge us more, so long as we can get our food made correctly and leave. If it's happening that often, maybe just let it go man.

@@It-is-me...Melsie the thing is, I think we have waited too long. She lives with my parents and they haven't been able to make the call. I don't see her too often due to distance and time, but I'm dog sitting her right now. She's deep in the throws of dementia and is suffering from muscular problems. She can't see or hear and doesn't seem to know who my parents or I am. Plus she spends all day in small pen in my old room to keep her from getting hurt. She regularly has accidents in there that she walks through and just watching her circle there was enough to make me break down last night. I'm planning on talking to my parents when they return home. I think we've waited too long.

Looks like people miss the point on ordering a cheeseburger with no cheese. Many fast-food workers are not... deep thinkers, nor do they need to be to do their job well. It's a job that requires knowledge of the procedures involved, and understanding what is meant when a customer uses a specific word. Other than that, it's about efficiency in getting the customer served and out the door. Different items are prepared in different ways. My Arby's order is a good example: What I want is roast beef on a sesame seed bun, with their cheddar cheese sauce. They used to sell that as an "Arby's Melt" but it's no longer on the menu. They do have something called the "Beef N' Cheddar" which is similar but not what I like. That one has onion flecks on the bun and has barbecue sauce. I could use the old term and employees that have been there a while may know what I mean. Newer ones may not. So, to be completely clear on what I'm looking for, I say "Roast Beef Sandwich, add cheddar cheese sauce" Does it sound dumb? Maybe, but that's how I get what I want, so I don't care.

I work in a veterinary ICU and the chaos I wants the doctors go through is insane. No idea how they handle it.

I wanted to be a vet but the multiple heartbreaks I already had with my own pets over the course of my life made me not want to be one.

In my hometown, there's a very good burger joint that is run by a slightly eccentric old man. If you ordered a hamburger, the lettuce, tomato, and pickles were add-ons but were included on the cheeseburger. The idea was to boost the cost of a hamburger, like a marketing gimmick? My brother (marketing major) figured out that the hamburger with the add-ons cost more than the cheeseburger. So he ordered the cheeseburger w/no cheese. The cashier started to say something but the old man sushed her and half-whispered "we save money when no cheese on cheeseburger because is still charged in price, no discount for no cheese, just no cheese."

Story 3: I sometimes order a hamburger with cheese. When I get a funny look, I say “I don’t like melted cheese on the patty.” So they give me the cold cheese after grilling, for cheeseburger (or add-on) price.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a vet because "I get to hang out with animals all day!". As I grew older I realized that it meant being around pets that would hate me and I'd have to put a lot of them down. I have all the respect for them but man I wouldn't be able to deal with that.
