r/Maliciouscompliance In today's episode, an entitled boss thinks that they can completely mistreat their employees. OP is overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. He eventually gets tired of his boss's terrible attitude and asks when he's getting a promotion. His boss basically laughs at him and says, "If you don't like it, then quit!" Sure thing, boss! In a world where there are jobs applenty and no Corona, yeah sure, any sane person would've quit on the spot. But I doubt anywhere in the world right now it's that case. Goodness knows, it sure isn't here. I've been going off and on with jobs and job searching, I think i've done about a dozen different things by now but never anything that stuck out. Know that I didn't quit on my own, I kept working until the contract ended. That's it.

As a fellow teacher, if I had gotten that paper from op where they had to pretend to be an alien, I wouldn’t have cared what they wrote, instant A+. Owners: we want to give you all of the place's responsibilities, making you a de facto manager. Also owners: we won't give you the position of a manager, but still want you to act as one. The reason? A manager would get a pay raise in comparison to the ordinary worker. They were basically exploiting OP, making him run everything but not paying him what he deserved. I believe this to be illegal and I am happy that they went closing the place.
@ForeverLaxx
@ForeverLaxx 4 года назад
Yup. Anytime an employer starts tacking on more and more responsibility without the commensurate pay increase and title update that would go with it, they're trying to get free labor out of you and hope that your desire to continue having a job trumps your desire to avoid being exploited. It works on a lot of people, and likely would have worked for the poster had the owner not told him to stop doing manager work.

@Carl Marchiano can we talk about the strange irony of a hyper religious school asking students to pretend like they're aliens, which the school obviously doesn't believe exists? lol
@Illdos
@Illdos 4 года назад
To play devil's advocate here (oddly appropriate given the context), trying to read the assignment does sound like it would be a pain. I can't think of an easy way to translate it back without having to transcribe (is that the right word?) the entire thing by hand and I can easily understand not wanting to do that. That being said, IMO and with absolutely no qualification (I'm a programmer, not a teacher), I'd probably just ask the student to turn in the original document and leave it at that.
@OrionoftheStar
@OrionoftheStar 4 года назад
The teacher who then had to decode three pages of work? And considering that they made up symbols for it, they probably did it on paper, so it all had to be done manually. That turns a... say... half an hour of grading into a full-fledged project, as they have to go through and convert every single letter from Alien to English, and THEN go through the normal process of grading for spelling, grammar, and knowledge of the subject. And any spelling mistake will also mean they have to go back and make sure they decoded it correctly so the spelling mistake wasn't actually on their end. It's like if someone assigns a three page essay, then some asshole student turns in a _thirty_ page essay. Yeah, it's creative and demonstrates their knowledge of the subject, but it makes grading that one essay as much of a chore as grading half of an entire class. Of course, the teacher should have just asked for the original instead of assigning detention, but it isn't too hard to see why someone would be upset over having to do that.

@@kayhaven4710 I actually tried to find the quote but couldn't. So I will paraphrase. On the sitcom, "Wings," Tony Shaloub played a cabbie/waiter named Antonio. Thomas Hayden Church played a rather dimwitted mechanic named Lowell. Lowell was going on a date with a woman, who was way out of his league, named Helen. But he wasn't interested in her romantically but didn't know how to tell her so without hurting her. Antonio gave him some advice. Antonio: "You just need to say it nicely. For instance, a man comes into the restaurant and orders a steak. It isn't like he wanted. He calls me (the waiter) over and says, 'listen, this steak looks great. It is a wonderful piece of meat. is well marbled. It has a lovely texture. But it isn't cooked the way that I'd like. Could I get another?' Lowell: "And asking like that didn't make you mad?" Antonio: "What do I care? All I knew was Antonio was eating well that night." Addendum...Lowell did use Antonio's advice. He started by telling Helen how well marbled she was...

something similar to the first one happened with me. i was in detention in eighth grade (i drew on my arms, which was apparently detention-worthy) and my pump went off because the battery was low. the detention teacher stormed across the room and demanded i give her my phone. i was a little shit back then, so i said, “uh... no? this is mine.” I thought it would be funny and have to deal with the principle or something... nope. she grabbed my pump and ripped it from my hand, and subsequently ripped the infusion set from my stomach. it hurt like hell, but the look of horror on her face when she saw my stomach bleeding was worth it. she was put on administrative leave or whatever for the rest of the year and don’t really know what happened when i went to high school. never told my parents, so it didn’t go further than whatever the administration decided.

One of them was a picture of a old town celebrating carnaval (a local holiday where everyone dresses up, get drunk and act like idiots(no it's not halloween)) and the prompt was to write a short article from the perspective of a outsider. I ended up writing a observation report from the perspective of a alien scientist missidentifying the holliday as a symbolistic sacrifice to a trickster god. Now for some information, I was at the time diagnosed with cancer at the time and had a special permit too have my mobil on my person all the time and not on silence. I tried to explain this to the teacher but he wouldnt listen and put my phone into the teachers room (launche?). And me peeing righly pissed waited till he walked away, walked into the teachers room and took my phone back. My math teacher saw me, I said hi while I took my phone and walked away. Later she asked my what this was all about and was too shocked to stop me at the time. I explained it to her and she laughed about it.

I heard a story about a similar situation as the first story from a friend of mine. A friend of his had implants in his ears to help with him being deaf. First day of Highschool teacher yells at him to "Take out your headphones" he tries explaining, no avail. So he complains, Teacher seems happy with her win and the students who knew him kept their mouths shut. Teacher then began doing rollcall, expecting everyone to stand up and give a small introduction. Eventually she calls friend's name. He doesn't respond in the slightest. She calls his name again. People are now snickering. Third time she half-yells his name. No response and the students who know what's happening are struggling not to laugh. She walks straight up to Friend's desk. Slams her hands on and supposedly yells in his face to stop being such a brat and to stop taking a piss at her. Friend knew what she was saying even without being a good lipreader and said in a slightly loud tone "Sorry Ma'am! You asked me to remove my Cochlear Implants! I couldn't hear you!"

Oh my gosh I can so relate to the first story!! I had a dinner lady scream at me to give her my pump because she insisted it was a phone and wouldn't even let me explain. Every time I tried to, she interrupted. I never got an apology and she got reported. She then proceeded to bitch about me to the other dinner ladies because I "rEpoRtEd hEr fOr dOiNg hEr jOb". I found out through other students who overheard.

If I was a teacher and one of my students made a whole language for a project and did it all in the language, that student wouldn't be in trouble, they'd get a perfect score plus extra credit, cause they put in more work than most of the other students to do it

@Navajonkee
@Navajonkee 4 года назад
@@ZimVader-0017 WIll you say the same when ALL of the students do this, and you'll have to spend days decoding and double checking all essays? Here's the thing: If it's okay for one student to do things in a different way, then it should be okay for every student to do the same. Backpedaling at that point would come off pretty badly. Being creative is one thing, but making unnecessary extra work for the teacher because you wanted to be a little bit creative should not be condoned. Be creative in a way that won't waste the teacher's time.

My mother has repeatedly been expected to act as a manager while never being allowed to actually be one at virtually every job she's ever had. This reminds me of when I worked at Wendy's and had someone asking for a Quarter Pound Single. I asked them if they wanted fries and a drink to make it a combo, but they said no. They then proceeded to order a fry and drink. I again ask if they want to make it a combo as it's cheaper, she then yelled at me that she didn't want the combo, so I charged her for the burger fry and drink separately, which cost her significantly more than if she had gotten the combo, which would have been the exact thing she ordered, but bundled together.

I’ve had almost the exact same experience with my insulin pump In middle school except it was a lunch lady who seemed to have it out for me, she tried to take my pump calling it a cell phone, tried to take my glucose meter because it was a “weapon” (it had a tiny needle used to draw blood for testing it), called me immature for having a picture book on the lunch table with my friends (we weren’t even reading it, just had it because we were going to read to the elementary school kids after school), and threatened me with detention because after an assembly for the dangers of heroine she saw my insulin pump again and decided it was for delivering heroine directly into my system during school. Did I mention I was 11 for all of this?

I did malicious compliance on a traineeship which was set up by the Prince’s Trust here in the U.K. full retail training, food and alcohol handling/sales. I followed the rules to the letter until a supervisor ordered me to literally break policies and health & safety guidelines. He reported me to the manager for “not listening to him” I tried to argue my case, but they instead just ignored me afterwards even after forcing the company and calling the owner. This was an unpaid traineeship, we were specifically told we did not have to do work we can’t do.
