With the first story, that guy 100% did it to himself. OP is perfectly in the clear on this. Had the guy been successful with getting OP fired, I doubt he would have batted an eye about it. He only showed remorse when it meant that he would loose his job.

Shane could easily have stayed under the radar of management and coasted till retirement. Instead, he chose to try and ruin someone's career just to be petty. If Shane needed retirement benefits that badly, he shouldn't have been playing stupid games. All OP did was expose that Shane's lie. Everything that happened after were simply consequences of his own actions. Why'd Shane lose his job? Because he attempted to sabotage someone's career. Why can't he get a new job? Because he refused to improve his skills to stay relevant.

Bragging about your own success is how some of those salesmen/timeshares try to convince you to buy into whatever garbage they're trying to sell. You see this a lot in those "self help" books. I too could be a millionaire if I had no morals and was willing to scam people into buying what is essentially a subscription service with no value

People who work on commission by recruiting people into sales that are overseen by others lie all the time. They depend on people being too polite, ignorant or lazy to push back or call them out, or being invested in the reward regardless of the cost. I once had to have a lawyer called on a big lottery company because their salesperson promised that what they offered me was a freebie (several tickets to the next lottery, no charge) to see if I could be interested to continue eventually. I legitimately asked their salesperson, directly. "This isn't going to be one of those free trial attached to a subscription situations where I'd be charged eventually, right?" and they said it wouldn't be anything like that. I made sure they put it on record and with their name attached, since these people work on commission. A few days later I got a call from the company going "We just need to confirm your financial info for your subscription." I informed them very surely that I did NOT agree to this and that they had to cancel it immediately. They denied and denied, so a relative got their lawyer to reach out for me. The legal threat got them to back off, but I still get spam mail from their company. I use it to line my cat's litterbox. I hope the one who lied to me (and likely many others) got fired. I never got those 'free tickets' btw.

One of my favorite teachers in highschool (who was married to another highschool teacher) loved going on these "free" timeshare trips. He said that, most of the time, when he let the presenters know that he and his wife are both public school teachers who don't make a lot of money that they would give up on selling them anything and let them go after a brief 20 minute spiel. Then he and his wife could go on and enjoy their free weekend vacation without sitting through the full 4 hour presentation.

Bass Pro Shop has a same scheme setup in all their stores. I was hired on at $20/hr for the first week, then down to $10/hr plus commission. You have to get people to buy tickets to go to these presentations at random destinations (as low as $250 for 2 and some packages in the thousands) and they gave you multiple choices on where you wanted to go, but said you have to go to a 'presentation' for two days in a row before getting the complimentary tickets to the local attractions of the place you chose to go. I never showed up to my first day after finding out it was a scam timeshare for rich people to get richer and employees to scrape by on minimum wage if they got no sales (which was almost always a guarantee). No thanks scam artists! Learn to make money the real way.

That guy was going to die because he refused to work and instead made it OP's fault. He was probably not going to live exactly due to that reason, him eating too much and failing on every diet will be due to something else, not his fault. It takes a lot of calories to even stay at 450. Here they try the scam trips on old people. Taking them on a day trip with a bus for a good price, then stick them in a room and half starve them while they sell you mattresses and crystals and all overpriced stuff and yell at them until enough of them break to make it worth their while. They really do keep them in there, forgoing whatever sightseeing they were promised until they buy. Luckily they do try to protect those people here.

Honestly, in the first story, Shane could have *still* avoided everything if he’d been honest. A message saying “I am badly ill. Here is my disease, here is my bill. If you send this I will not be able to afford treatment and will die.” OP never meant to kill him, he meant to get back at him. At that point they could have made a deal. Shane could blame the issue on something he failed to see, and publicly apologized to OP (and even say that OP was right to not implement his suggestion) And then, quietly asked for a transfer to another area so OP would never have to see him again. In OP’s position, I would be amenable to this solution. Heck, he could make sure that Shane was now his biggest ally in building his career. “You fail to sing my praises once, people are talking about high performers and you fail to bring me up one time, just once, and you are out of here.” Problem is, Shane would have needed to literally beg for his life for this to happen, and for whatever reason that I will not speculate on, he didn’t.

Story 1. OP while I understand how you feel, please don't blame yourself. The only person Shane had to blame for losing his job and life was Shane. He could have handled the incident any number of ways. He could have kept quiet and let you do your thing. Or if he really had to go with his reputation as the go-to guy, he could have talked about how between his experience over the years and your knowledge of the new tech, the two of you found the problem. And because he knew it was urgent and because his knowledge of how to fix it only went so far, he decided to come back while you were finishing up to let the others know. If he'd really wanted to, he could have easily kept his reputation as the current go-to guy, while building you up as the next go-to guy. Instead he decided to let his fee-fees get hurt and let his pride take control. That's his issue, not yours
@Urrarg
@Urrarg 9 месяцев назад
Comments for last story: rSlash, the guy was probably trained to recruit younger people when they can't sell. Older guy saw you and likely knew you weren't interested in buying based on your body language so passed you to the younger guy hoping to recruit you. Seeing someone around your age with your experience making a ton of quick money can make you feel like you can also make that much, which makes the job appealing. It might not work on everyone, but it's still an effective recruitment tactic. You only need to look at how many people chase being a content creator for that same reason to see how effective it is.

The thing about Shane that really gets me is that the guy was clearly clever enough to remember everything he was shown enough to convince bosses that he was the person who solved the issue. I work in tech and have so many systems that you often have to do it yourself a few times for it to sink in... This guy clearly had the capacity to learn and just chose to be lazy. Story 1 is basically Spider-Man vs the Green Goblin. Goblin tries to kill Spider-Man by impaling him with the Goblin's glider. Spider-Man dodges, and the Goblin gets impaled by his own glider. The Goblin's son blames Spidey for his father's death.

Regarding the last story: while I was saving for my house I went to a timeshare presentation. I did it for fun and for the free perks. By the time I had gone through every single sales person through the organization, one of them said they had never ever had anyone say no to each and every person. That's when I told him that I was saving for a house which is far more important than their timeshare.
@bland9876

So you're telling me all I have to do is sit through a couple of hour with the presentation and I get a free cruise? And I don't actually have to buy a timeshare holy crap that sounds like a scam that's also pretty easy to beat such that it doesn't seem like a very good scam to me.

First story: If you cannot swim you probably should not be rocking the boat. Shane would have done well to keep his head down low and just blend in with the furniture for the next few years and then quietly retire. It was not OP that killed Shane... it was Shane's pride.

You know what I would've done if I was falsely accused of intentional sabotage at my workplace by such an out-of-touch senior colleague? Tell the management that I'm officially handing over all the responsibilities of that section to the complainant because "they apparently know how to do my job better than me", as they will either backtrack in a heartbeat and get absolutely rimmed by management for it or they will double down on the act and make the company bleed money for a short while. And I'd just sit at the sidelines watching it unfold with a smirk until being properly apologized to. I wouldn't care if they have a serious medical condition either - if they suddenly disrespect me and try to ruin my livelihood out of sheer jealousy when they'd already set themselves for a stable future, I'm not gonna respect anything about them. You sleep in the bed you make, even if it is a hole with a tombstone over it.

My parents did one of those timeshare cruise things and it wasn’t their first time so they knew to just sit through the presentation. My dad was extremely abrasive and disruptive to the point that they warned him if he continued they would kick him out of the presentation and he wouldn’t get his tickets. He quickly shut up and my parents got to enjoy a nice cruise

SLA fines isn't government fines, it's "Service Level Agreement" fines. It's normal to have if you are providing a service, especially a critical one, but any proper agreement between customer and provider should have this baked in. SLA Fines are fines payed by the provider regardless if the customer is private company or public :)

There was a period of my childhood/teenagehood where my parents were roped into all these time share opportunities. They only fell for the first one (In florida which we still use) But with those we got to go to many other countries, guatemala, brazil, peru, etc. Got lots of fun trips, all inclusive resorts, disney perks and my parents learned to be non commital when it comes to purchases. Win-win.

Story 1: OP can feel guilty. But would anyone BLAME him, no. Guilt exists for when we do something wrong OR when we go too far. OP had options with that recording, someone died due to the recording being sent. OP can feel guilty, but he’s not the bad guy and he should not blame himself for that death. Our feelings are our own and people don’t get to tell us how we feel. If I were in OP’s place I would probably do everything exactly the same and I would feel guilty too. But destroying that cycle of newcomer abuse was overall good.

I know why OP feels guilty, I would too but that is not on him. That guy was willing to throw OP under the bus for no valid reason. He deserved to be fired, he did this to himself. He should have thought about what the worst outcome would be if anyone found out before doing this. OP just corrected people's view on himself, the repercussions could have devastated him without him doing anything wrong. It was simple self defense.

The first story is clearly a story that was a level of revenge that was far worse than it was expected in its sheer destructive power. Also, Shane reminds me of the part in Return of the Jedi where Leia used the chains to s t r a n g l e Jabba the Hutt to d e a t h, except that the OP used the truth, his connections, technology, and knowledge in place of the chains, and he brought down a lazy and a b u s i v e boss. Also, as for the second story, United States Marines are not only a very tough bunch of people, but that they are also, more often than not, a very smart bunch of people as well, and, although I do not condone drinking booze, I would have probably pulled a stunt like his, as well as bought the properties that they were trying to sell so that they could never ever enter into either timeshare OR HOA territories, just to spite BOTH types of people, instead of spending the money on booze.

Story one So hes overweight and his breathing issues are due to his weight and this has been going on for most of his life(you dont become over 400lbs over night). So when the tech field started to pass him he should have started making major lifestyle changes and educating himself. He could start by taking a daily walk while eating a low carb, low fat and low caloric diet, and incorporating intermediate fasting, to help him shed pounds. Even if he stayed at the job and was able to afford things, he was not changing his lifestyle at all when hes had a job, so he prob would have died while working for the company anyway. He was in the US im sure he could have gotten government help. Op should not feel bad, they didnt do anything to cause the issue. If the guy wanted to stay still retirement he should have adapted with the times and focused on his health.

Story 2: Having once attended a timeshare presentation for West Gate Resorts in Gatlinburg several years ago, I am enjoying the prorevenge here. Those presentations are so high pressure, but my husband and I shut them down and got $100 for our time, which we used to visit some attractions and to eat, so it was a win for us, not for them.

If your plan is to ride out your last years to retirement, and you absolutely need those retirement benefits, the two rules are don't make waves and CYA. Shane failed to do either. Also, those health problems Shane had? They may have been no fault of his but they also could have been brought on or exacerbated by life style choices, in which case it again would have been Shane's fault.

My parents went to one of those timeshare things before I was born. It was for free gift cards. They sat, listened, said they weren't interested, got their cards and left. Timeshares understand that they rope customers in with free stuff and it works. It just sometimes means that they lose money giving stuff away for free with no one buying into the timeshare.

I never mentioned to the woman that I know that they were trying to foist a timeshare scam on us.

The only reason why OP feels bad in the first story is because they actually have a conscience. Shane obviously didn’t. This is a classic case of “what goes around comes around”. OP May feel bad about “causing” Shane’s death, which I understand. But he shouldn’t feel too bad as for all we know, Shane sealed his own fate the moment he tried to frame OP. I mean who’s to say Shane’s dirty deed wouldn’t have been discovered if OP didn’t reveal it? His bragging could have eventually been the cause of its reveal. Basically one way or another these things come out.

Here's the thing, OP didn't cause Shane's demise. Shane self sabotaged himself in a number of ways. He was morbidly obese and did not take advantage of his company's health insurance to find ways to lose the extra weight, instead he invested all his hope on a future retirement plan. However, he didn't put in the effort to keep his guru status by learning the new programming language and software. Then he became insecure in his irreplaceable status so he tried to throw OP under the bus. He made his own problem. OP is not at fault.

Yeah, honestly, we see this over and over: "Hey, I exposed a bad person for doing bad things and now they're facing the consequences of their own actions. AITA?" The answer is almost always no. Shane may have died, but it was because his desire to put a young 'un in their place overrided his common sense. If he wasn't a prick, then it wouldn't have happened. End of.

For the first one, I would have given him a chance, but only if he corrected the story about the incident. If he came forward, he may not have been fired, but it would definitely have been a serving of crow. Timeshare sales pitches can be fun if you know you aren't buying and you watch to see what sales tactics they use. I'll bet there is a timeshare pitch bingo card out there. It's fun bringing up how you can get timeshares for free online by just taking over the maintenance payments. When I was going it was before having universal internet on the phone to prove this.

My parents got a free Vegas weekend, with which they'd have to sit through a time share presentation. Having never been to Vegas, they took the reservation. My father passed suddenly, but my brother suggested as they had the reservation "anyway," we could pool our money and I could go as well. My brother and mom dutifully attended the presentation, politely said *Nope* at its conclusion, and we enjoyed our first time in Las Vegas.

1st story. while he deserved to lose his job OP just helped a huge company pocket extra money by screwing him out of his retirement. He did work 40+ years and was excellent at his job until the new software came in. The company saw that as a loophole to not pay out. So op screwed Shane and made sure a corporation save some bucks. Hope OP likes it when they find a way to screw them out of retirement as well.

The timeshare one reminds me of a presentation I had to go to with my mother as a kid at Disney World. On the plus side, at least it was actually entertaining since the presenter turned out to be a magician from one of those talent shows on tv (I think he said AGT, but that was too long ago to remember for sure) and used a lot of tricks during it 😂

I got free tickets for a cruise, I went to their presentation and we had this young sales guy doing the same thing. He was bragging about how much money he makes, and was insisting that we get the timeshare, and how much money we could make renting it out on Air BnB. I then asked him if that's the case, why shouldn't I just buy the condo out right and rent it out year round? Then I wouldn't have to just rent it during my reserved time. He claimed it would be very expensive, and he said it would financially strain us since we would add this as an extra expense to our finances. I then explained that we had no financial expenses, that I paid cash for our home and vehicles, and we had no debts, so why would I want to share a vacation property? I'd rather purchase it, then rent it out, or better yet, buy or build a home on the beach and live there. When he did a credit check on me, he discovered how well off I was, so he left us alone and immediately gave us our tickets with the premium upgrade. We loved Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
