Story 3 reminds me of when I used to work in a movie theatre in 2017. An employee was fired because of something exactly like this. She was in charge of ticket sales. Instead of giving the entire ticket to the customer, she’d rip off one half of the ticket (what’s usually ripped off when you’re admitted into the theatre) and would then sell that same half to another customer, pocketing the money. Not sure how long she got away with it but eventually the loss in revenue was noticed and all it took was looking at the handy cameras that pointed RIGHT AT THE EMPLOYEE to figure out what was causing the problem.
@KinCryos
@KinCryos Год назад
I worked at a theatre during the summer of 2001. if someone working in ticket sales there tried that, the ushers would find out soon enough since we were instructed to take a specific side of the ticket (the back of which had a corporate logo and a black bar, probably for use with a counting machine). this had the bonus of making it ridiculously easy to catch pairs of people who bought only one ticket and split it between them. the only time someone tried anything with me, he tried the old "flash an expired ticket stub" trick. It took me a moment to realize that the auditorium number on the ticket was in the other wing (we had two wings, the larger had 1-12, and the smaller had 13-18, I was stationed at the smaller wing and only saw a 1, so this _could've_ worked) but fortunately for me, the kid make the mistake of coming out a few minutes later to head to the main concession stand (which was in the main area, unlike the smaller booths in each wing that only open up on busy nights) and asking me to *remember* him, which only furthered my suspicion. oh I remembered him… and asked to see his ticket stub when he returned, and when he showed me, I told him everything that was wrong with it (wrong wing, the screening at that time already ended, and the movie was no longer in the theatre) he knew when to fold 'em, and left with some dignity

Same mistake as in that Jane story. Got greedy. If each had only done it a little, they'dve gotten away with it. We did the same thing as high schoolers when we worked the gas station alone on the weekends. When a customer paid cash for the car wash, we'd pocket it. But at most only 1 out of 3 times. Stayed under radar, never got caught.
@Annie_Annie__
@Annie_Annie__ Год назад
When I worked delivering pizzas, it was back when you had to have the customer sign the receipt if they paid by credit card. It was incredibly common that if the customer left the tip space blank, some drivers would write in their own tip. The smart (though unethical) ones would only add a few dollars and different amounts each time. The less bright ones would write in $10 or $20 every time and get caught really quickly. If you’re ever signing a credit/debit card receipt, and you’re not leaving a tip using the card, make sure to write in $0.00 or “cash” and fill in the total line so that if you tip with cash, the server, barista, driver, or their manager can’t double-dip and steal from you.

fast food story: reminds me when I worked at a donut shop. no outright stealing money but the husband of the owner was "special". one time when someone took donuts for a customer from the front instead of the back, the entire tray of donuts fell to the floor. the owner's husband put all the donuts in the trash on top of fresh coffee grinds, took the trash to the back room, then took the donuts out of the trash and back on a new tray to be put back out on display to sell. (this was in the mid 90's, and the display had the tray's at an angle to show off the product, if you took donuts from the front it would cause things to slide right down and onto the floor)

Reminds me when I worked at a small independent supermarket back in the 70s. The prepacked meat had a marker on the label to show when it had been packed - this was pre "best before" dates. They'd check the fridges for labels that were close to expiring, take them out back and just put new labels on them with a new marker. Don't know how long some of that meat sat there before it was either sold or went green enough to be thrown away.

@@franl155 The Dennys I worked at did the same with all the handwritten expiration dates you have to write when you open a bottle of salad dressing or ice cream toppings or whatever. @@OuchingTigerLimpingDragon - Remember one time I bought a carton of milk from a corner shop. Got it back to the office, opened it - and it came out in lumps. Checked the "sell-by" date to find it had been scratched off. Took it to the local Trading Standards Office to complain. Next time I went into the shop he complained that I'd taken it to the TSO, who'd apparently had a word with him: I should have brought it back, he said. He shouldn't have been selling rotten milk, I said. And it was no accident; the scratched-off date proved that. How the shop thought it would get away with that is beyond me.

3rd story: 25 years back, when I started to work, there was something similar we caught on totally on accident: collaborators of the store were entitled to vouchers they could redeem for 2 drinks and 1 meal per day and, surprise surprise, peoples who were not entitled to those vouchers were using them, so we got to secretly videotape what was happening on all the cash registers of the food court... we got our evidences about the vouchers abuses... we also got other evidences: 1 cashier was cashing in without computing some of the meals and of course, wasn't giving receipt for those. (She was in fact computing in but annulling the transaction right after she got the total). Then, a few times a day, she was counting her cash register to retrieve just the right amount of "surplus" money before turning the cash fund at the end of her shift... once we caught on her, we did check for a full month the full extend of her skimming... trust me, watching videotapes while double checking the receipt roll was a chore and an half... in the end, we could prove that in 1 month, or 22 worked days on her part, she did skim the equivalent of 28000$ (it wasn't in the US)... for some reasons, after her being fired for causes (duh...), the registered income substantially increased in the food court... more recently, the manager of one of the restaurant did the same... in the end, when everything was calculated (computers hold way more footprints than the old paper receipt rolls), they were sued for over 2M$ (same, not in the US) and the court acknowledged about 1,5M$ restaurants are probably the most scammed (scammable) businesses by their employees... until someone start to pay attention

the fast food, money stealing story: I live in Europe, and a funny practice here (I live in Poland now) is that they overcharge my card - the moment they overcharge a card, they can claim it as a mistake and return cash to the customer, but if we do not look at the amount they charge us and we do not pick up the receipt, we cannot claim it later, so that money is just pocketed at the end of the day, when they compare the total sold, vs the money received by card and cash, and they pocket the difference...if iregularity appears between the card records and cash records, they claim they overcharged by mistake on cst card and they returned by cash... if cst pays by cash, the product may cost 5.98 but we pay 6 and in big shops, that amount easily gets nice enough to have your meal that day

As a Security+ certified SysAdmin of nearly 15 years, I must strongly caution against the last story. Yes, certainly, the scammer deserved to have their equipment mucked with for scamming people regularly. Scamming is a real asshole thing to do and I'm all for the justice this scammer got. However, that said... if you're gonna go down the path of intentionally damaging files and hardware not belonging to you using viruses of different types, then by lawful definition, that's felony territory. Cyber-related crimes are under the jurisdiction of the FBI because issues can quickly cross international borders with other countries and be open to interpretation by those governing bodies. Damaging someone else's computer (or both their computer & network, depending on the virus's payload) quickly takes the situation out of your hands, out of your local police's hands, and right to the FBI to figure out how severe the case is and the damage you've done before most likely passing it back to your local police to file charges against you. And people fail to realize that cyber-related crimes rack-n-stack, unlike most other regular crimes. What I mean is... If you rob a homeowner or a bank, that's a singular charge of burglary. Gaining access to someone's computer when you shouldn't have it and changing files can actually be MANY misdemeanors and/or felonies, depending on what happens. For example, merely attempting to log in and gaining access to a computer you don't own and shouldn't be on is a misdemeanor level charge. Manipulating files on that computer is another misdemeanor charge. Accessing multiple external accounts logged into that PC when you shouldn't is a separate misdemeanor charge for EACH account you access. The very second you view data in those other accounts, that's unauthorized access to private and/or protected information, yet another misdemeanor charge. If you change any data or send any message on those accounts, it's a misdemeanor for each situation for unauthorized manipulation of network data related to that specific account. And finally, we get to the usage of viruses and whatnot to cause havoc or damage. That's not misdemeanor level, that's felony territory. The law states that those computer actions that require planning and execution to wrongfully manipulate or damage a computer and/or network are felony territory because of the nefarious level of planning and execution required. Committing cyber-related felonies can royally screw your life up and prevent you from accessing any business or government computer or network again. Would any employer want to hire someone who has multiple misdemeanors and felonies for inappropriate computer use?

The second story, I worked a Tim-Hortons for 6 years. We had a team leader who trained many different cashiers and such, and she had a legal way to scan the customers. She would purposely give out as much small change as possible so that the customer would most likely leave it (as a tip) because he/she didn’t want that many coins. Fun fact, employees at Tim-Hortons are not supposed to get any tips at all. The customer is allowed to leave their dime if they don’t want it, but the employees are actually not allowed to keep it. Our bosses let us as long as there wasn’t a problem, but it still is illegal.

My uncle used to do the same thing when he was a manager at Wendy's. He raised the price of every meal by 10 cents for the drive-through. You order 3 items. He just pockets 30 cents. He'd walk out with a picket full of cash every morning and deposit it into his bank account when he was doing the drop for the night before. He got fired for scaming something like 80 grand and Wendy's prices at that location jumped.

Way back when I was young and dumb I pocketed some money from my fast food job. But it was never at the expense of the customer. We had a broken screen that would allow me to clear the order before it was finished. So if they paid in exact change I’d clear the order after the kitchen made it and cancel it after the customer gave me the money. I never got caught and I never had a customer complain about an order, just lucky I guess.

TBH in the first story I'd be more on the side of Jane. It looks like a very toxic work environment where you don't get paid time off and unpaid time off gets rejected often enough she had to resort requesting time off in "secret". It also shouldn't matter why an employee takes time off. Whether they go to Vegas, they take care or relatives, or just want to stay home for a few days... Also, if you accept the resignation of an employee, you also need to send a notice back to them rather than ambushing them when they come to work.

The drive thru one reminds me of something that happened the last time I went on vacation. Before we left we went to the Arby's in town that my brother worked at to eat before a long drive. It possibly sounds like a Karen moment I'm not sure. My stepsister & her husband's order was taking a while & we found out the guy trashed her order & receipt(maybe just just the receipt & didn't do the order, I don't remember if I fully heard) so they couldn't do anything about their order & was being an ass about it. The MIL/grandma of the family that was going on vacation with us went to the counter & scolded the guy for his attitude & actions, my sister & her husband got their order with a little dessert as an apology. Probably made worse when one guy came over to apologize then tell me he'd be coming over to my mom's place to help with the water heater(we were having issues with it at the time). It was probably awkward to explain to the MIL that scolded someone that he was my brother's friend & then learn the person that didn't get their order some how was his friend's stepsister especially since my dad has come to say hi to my brother at work sometimes.

Before the pandemic happened, I used to update company records (electronically) in an office downtown. (I work from home these days) ^_^ On the way to said office, I used to pick up a footlong sandwich at a Subway that was a couple of blocks away on the way to work. When a new branch opened up across the street from the workplace, I decided to give it a try. Unlike the other branch, this new one was *super skimpy* with their toppings. >_< Needless to say, I only went there twice - the second time was to drop off an angry letter to the manager about the terrible service that I'd received. I don't know if that bad branch is still open these days but, if not, I hope that the employees and manager learned their lesson. Never screw a customer when it comes to their food.

You wanna talk about terrible managers? I had a thought come to me abut one of the managers I had at the last job I had ((you'l see why she was so terrible....)). Situation 1: I was working in the back, cutting up apples with the apple cutter, to put with meals, right? I don't know/remember how exactly it happened, but SOMEHOW my thumb got caught in the blades ((yeah, you can see where this is going, right?)) and I cut the ever loving daylights out of it. I ran---well, speed walked---over to my manager and the conversation goes as follows: Me: *slightly panicking, holding bleeding thumb* Um...Manager? I was cutting the apples as you asked and I'm, uh, *bleeding* . Her: *glances up at me, then at my thumb* Go wash it off in the sink, wrap it with a bandage, and get back to work ((Okay, I get she was trying to keep the thing going, but lady....your employee is *BLEEDING* ....show a little more emotion, honey...)).". Had to go to the hospital and get it skin glued back together. Situation 2: Same boss, different month. You know that spray decoration that you put up on a window for Christmas? We got complaints that somebody had drawn... *ahem* ... male parts....on the window instead of snowflakes, trees, and whatnot. Of COURSE, when I come out from doing my work in the back, who do they immidiately blame? You guessed it. *ME* . I got irritated and snapped ((not my best look, I admit)) that how could I have possibly done it, when I was in the back and in the *walk in freezer* at the time of said body parts being put on the window. They then discovered that, uh-oh! Black sheep is standing up for herself! NOW what do we do?!!?. They then tried to blame it on me, AGAIN, and I stood firm with the whole, you know, "It wasn't ME, that did it, stop being a butthole and admit you did it!!". They never admitted to it, obviously. 🤦 BUT, this story has a happy ending, though. My mom was with her trainer and was complaining about the second situation to him, when another member of the gym, she was at, overheard the conversation. He wanted to know everything that my boss did/said/wrongfully blamed me for and my mom asked him why. Turns out, he was my boss's boss. Take a wild guess what happened next. *FIRED* !!!

I worked at a pizza place once during college. There was this one guy that right before closing he would take orders for pizzas but not enter them into the system and pocket the money. Sometimes ppl would place massive orders right before we closed so you do the math. He also stole bags of frozen chicken wings that he would sneak out the back door in a trash can and hide behind the dumpster until he was off. After work he would swing around and grab them. Said wings he would proceed to sell to ppl in his neighborhood. Very creative guy and never caught 10/10.

I managed a Subway in the early 90's Tampa FL area..A young worker also worked at the nearby same plaza Winn Dixie which had a coupon that was printed on the store receipt for $1.00 off a Foot long sub..well that guy STOLe a whole roll of register tape from the Winn Dixie, cut out the $1.00 off coupons and every sub he rang up he did the buck off and pocked the dollar!! I knew something was up as the coupons had no printing on the back of them!! I figured it out and caught him!!! Several other employees were in on it!! One night a worker who told me I was going to hell for being gay he was black and called me a white devil but that's a whole different story..anyway this clown called me at 11pm said he was robbed and went home..did not call the Police just went home..I arrived and looked at the video tapes and he and his friends came behind the counter made subs took all the cash and locked up then left!
