@aaronmccullers384

Ironically there are some jobs where it is better to have people with no job experience than people who are "experts". This mostly applies to fields with particular styles of doing the job, such as writing based jobs. For instance, a legal document writer would not be able to perform as a script writer or a grant writer even though they would have "experience" with writing. If the job isn't like that, however, then yeah can't argue with what you said.
@SpamCobb

Personally, I try not to hire people who are overqualified because they tend to leave quickly when they find something more fitting. And I don't blame them at all but the training process is time-consuming, costs the company and takes my personal effort. @@randomtinypotatocried Yeah, I respect that opinion but as a low level manager in retail, my time matters, too. I only had to be dumped so many times before I stopped letting myself get hurt. The worst interview I ever went to was one where they completely forgot that I was supposed to come in that day. I was in high school and skipped school with a note from my parents to be able to attend. Then when the interviewer finally got to me after two hours of waiting, she said “let’s take a walk, I need to keep an eye on the store.” And she starts fast walking through the store while I’m practically jogging in heels to keep up with her. Since this was a busy grocery store, it was also very loud, and I had to strain to hear her questions and ask her to repeat them several times. She also would randomly introduce me to different heads of the department (meat market, produce, etc). There was just so much going on that I kept stumbling over my words. Then she remarked that it seemed I didn’t really want this job since I wasn’t paying close attention. Bitch, I skipped school, showed up in a blazer, and waited several hours *for you*

That is pretty normal in EMS in Germany sadly. You go in for an interview for a Paramedic apprenticeship and they suggest you should do a year of voluntary civil service with like 2,50€ an hour but full time hours and the same responsibilties as someone getting normal pay, to gain expierence in the field. It's so deeply entrenched now that you have basically 0 chances of getting in without that year of civil service or paying several thousand € for EMT school and a Lorry license yourself with at least 4 months (most often 6) of full time school and practicals with no pay (I had to do both the year of civil service and another 6 months and 5000€ for EMT school before I got in. If you dont do voluntary sth there is no way to become an EMT without paying yourself). For an apprenticeship that formally just requires GCSE equivalent and a doctors note to say you're healthy but not any prior knowledge whatsoever. Also 2,50€ an hour for a full time postion that is physically (lots of walking and carrying patients) and psycologically (lots of responsibilty and many shitty situations) extremely challenging is something else. And if you were wondering we do have an EMT and Paramedic shortage despite a ratio of between 20 at the lowest and 40-50 applicants per apprenticeship spot. And 5000€ is a massive price tag by German standards a bachelors will set you back 2300 in uni fees over 3 years.

@@Serenity_yt There's definitely that expectation of having been a volunteer firefighter prior to becoming a professional here in the US, but that can vary wildly across jurisdictions. There's also plenty of volunteer firefighters who have no desire to go pro, and many poor rural communities which likely couldn't support a full-time professional fire department (we're talking counties that have literally 1 full-time sheriff who temporarily deputizes gun owners if they need to form a posse)
@Serenity_yt
@Serenity_yt 3 месяца назад
@redjoker365 there are many many volunteers here as well and thats perfectly fine but what I see as more problematic is the expectation that you have to volunteer to go pro there's no direct route to go pro without volunteering or spending huge amounts of money. This sacrifice first before we deign to consider you even though we really really need you is wrong. And Firefighters and EMS is very much separate here with different routes all of 911(112) ambulanc services are professional here but only very big cities have professional fire departments

There were at least two applicants, a man and a woman. The man was single while the woman was married and I think her application said that she planned of getting pregnant. Why anyone would say that in a job application, I don't know. But the teacher actually made the argument of "it's less beneficial for a company to hire a married woman than a single man because the woman will go on pregnancy/maternity leave." and even as a 14-15 year old, that felt _so uncomfortable._ Just straight up sexism. Best yet: the teacher was a married woman. I think one applicant was also over 50 years old and the teacher made the argument of "they wouldn't be working as long as a 20-30 year old applicant, so better hire a younger one." That class made me dread the work industry so damn much.

The first company I worked for made me uncomfortable working for them because one day the woman who was the head of the company called my client who had just bought lunch for us on the way home from his doctor's appointment. Without knowing she was on speaker phone the owner ended up saying to him that he was behind in his bills and tried to use that to force him to give me up as a caregiver. The second company I was quick to leave after my wife started having seizures and other issues after hitting her head twice in the shower and my boss said it was all happening because demons were attacking her...

I have an hard time connecting with people, an hard time socialise after a day of work or school and people often find me "weird" even if I try my very best to not be "weird'. I am still in school (I am doing a Master), all people in my classes except one found good paying job in great compagnie and I am happy for them. I can't even do interview, because most position available are only available if you have connection with the compagnies. I am always exhausted to just exist and working on my thesis. All my teachers told me the importance to go out and meet people, to land job during or after school. BUT I AM SO TIRED, I just can't do that ! It's so unfair. Then tell them about the neurodivergent bits that creat advantages over others..For example I mentioned that I am autistic but that means I will have a better eye for detail than others. I have DCD and dyslexia but that means I know how to make material more accessable to those with disabilities a lot better than others because I have lived it. I can learn and adapt quicker than most people because I have ADHD (they dont have to know that its because of the rejection sensitivity that I get work done so fast or that i will need a break every 3 months because of ADHD/ASD burnout). After getting hired I implimented all the needs I have and quoted the Equality Act 2010 when they started showing objections. The team i work in are very accepting as well and my manager and boss. My point is that you can highlight the good parts of your neurodivergency in a workplace that needs more diversity ^_^

Fun fact, some companies do not want to pay to list multiple job types so they tend to group all the relevant positions into one job posting or they just expand an old post for a single job type to include multiple positions. For instance, when I was job hunting I was told by my neighbor that his company was looking for mechanical engineers (like me) and that I should apply to their job posting. The job posting was for electrical engineers but the company didn't want to edit it to include the other engineer types they were looking for or create new job postings for the new positions. It's about coercing people applying for jobs into the mindset of a supplicant begging for charity rather than a person with actual skills willing to do actual work in exchange for less money than the company will be making from that work. The absolute worst part? Walmart wasn't always that way. When Sam Walton founded it, he focused on "Buy-American" and on being _somewhat_ reasonable with employee pay. It's what helped Sam Walton's businesses become so successful. Then it went public, became beholden to Wall St. instead of Main St., and Sam Walton died & his kids took over. The combination of the two is what changed Walmart into the paragon of dystopian-capitalism that it is today.

During one of my interviews I, male, was asked (as part of those random questions they ask to determine your personality) what Disney princess I consider to be the most similar to myself. I asked them, given Disney's acquisitions, what their definition of "Disney princess" would include (like if I could count Marvel characters) and after that I told them "Mulan, OG version, not live action" (and yes, I did specify which Mulan during the interview) given her work ethic and ingenuity. I proceeded to turn the tables on my interviewers by saying "well now you've got me curious, what Disney princess do you identify as?". I got a chuckle out of them and they also said Mulan for the same reasons. No clue if the interviewer actually agreed or just paniced and copied me, still funny to think about to this day.

They wanted me to do the same "IQ" test for each of them. 5th time they told me that I didn't have to do the test just moments before the test started. The candidate accepts the role, gets a lease started, gets all their stuff packed up and ready to move, maybe even gets their kids ready to go to school in the new country. Then the day before the candidate is set to get on the flight over, while they are in the air, or the day before their start date the company rips the job offer out from under them. I have seen wayyy too many of these stories lately and those companies need to get their butts handed to them whenever they pull that nonsense.

19:05 I remember working for a place that had a really positive reputation for being kind. Granted, the training session provided was extensive (three weeks, but I can vouch for it being necessary), but I felt more confident doing well as time goes on. Then, it led to working for 60-hour weeks, at times past midnight hours to be on a phone call. The job was something I wanted to be in full-time, and I was consistently told during the changing expectations that things were going well, that as long as we continue this efforts that it's a sure thing. As you may expect, this wasn't the case and led to a final interaction that ended on being told not only that all was well, but there was clear improvement before being virtually ghosted. In response, I just took time to look for other work that paid for more in less time and have to say, learning a few tricks that recruiters do to prospective employees to weed out prospective employers has saved me a lot of time and money down the road.

The very first job interview I ever had after finishing school right out told me that they wouldn't hire me because I was a young woman, because they already had two female employees on maternity leave and couldn't afford a potential third one. But they had to hold this dummy interview because otherwise they were viable for charges for discrimination. I also was asked in many interviews if I already had or wanted to have children (including the interview for my current job). Sadly, that question still catches one off guard even though it is strictly forbidden in my country, it is practically normal. So normal, in fact, that it is not illegal and even advised by unions to lie when you get such a question.

The "dog interview" story reminded me of something. A pastor at this huge mega church, had recently given a sermon about being kind to those who are less fortunate than you, and help them whenever possible. Keep in mind, many of the members of his church were very wealthy types. He then announced that they would have a guest pastor at the next service. So the next sunday rolls around, and the people coming to church see this ratty looking homeless guy sitting by the door to the church. Most of the church members ignored the guy, some threatened to call the cops on him if he didn't leave, and several told him to go get a job and stop bothering them. Imagine their surprise, when the service started, to find out that this homeless guy was the guest pastor. I'm told that it royally pissed off a lot of people, as their hypocrisy was laid bare right then and there, and they couldn't make an excuse to get out of it.

The main reason we had this position was because our club hosted a poultry show open to anyone in our state, and we needed a webpage for entry forms and other promotional things. One of the responsibilities I had was to respond to the email "contact us" thing on the website. Usually it was things about the show, but sometimes it was questions about membership or people trying to find homes for birds. After a while I kept getting requests to join LinkedIn from a person who's inquiry I responded to. I had never met this person. I can't remember what I did in the end, but I think I contemplated sending them an email to stop sending requests to join a business networking site to an organization account for a club of 8-18 year olds.
