I think when you got to the dragonmark races and realized just adding up points didn’t work for those spells and you needed to consider build defining spells … that is sort of my feeling on this whole process. Collecting points by accumulating useful features is not the same as a build defining feature… like Tortle armor or access to Elven Accuracy or free feats etc. So, in the end, I think there are some races with features that are build defining, some that are just amazing additions to any build (flight, resistances) , and a bunch that are just fine. I really enjoyed the series and find some value in the ranking but more value in just the exercise itself.

I kinda wish this series was done like he did the subclass tier list. With each tier defining how well a race can used to make a build and more broad without the point system. That said it was a nice exercise so I can't say I didn't enjoy it in its current iteration.

Agreed on tortle. Any build where that AC is used, it's irreplaceable. Any build where it's not, it's terrible, so because it's a binary it's hard to assign a point value to it

It is interesting to see somebody else's take, and what they put value on skill wise. I would caution referencing this for builds directly expecting it to work for you, though if it inspires you that is great - it is entirely subjective, and your own feeling on features is probably more valuable to you than his - It is your experience that feeds that feeling. For instance I personally think Treantmonk values flight and the feat rather too highly. They are really good but no single feature should put you into S teir on its own even if you added loads of other minor negatives to that race IMO. Flight can easily be of no use at all in many sessions, its only great value is very situational - dungeons and buildings turn up often in an adventure and tend to have ceiling low enough that flying is functionally about the same as walking, and even in the open air flight makes you really visible so you may well turn into a pincushion... Flight is still really useful especially for out of combat utility, so it should be worth a good haul on its own, but it isn't something so good in its own right practically nothing else even in combination can match its points value. The feat is a bit more certain as you pick the feat to suit the character, so it either covers your weakness or bumps up your specialism, should reliably be useful. But again I don't think it is worth nearly that much good as it is - many feats are great for a build, but you get your first feat pretty early anyway and really before you get to that sort of level most feats are of relatively little value - you and the NPC die too easily for many of them to be particularly useful that early in the game (but as feats offer so wide a range that is obviously not universal).
@boumxyz
@boumxyz Год назад
@@foldionepapyrus3441 I think you undervalue the free feats. The usual feat you get is at the expense of an Asi. You either get the feat or the Asi but not both. The racial free feat let you have a free feat without having to trade it off. And some feats are garbage, but others are quite good and more so at level 1.
@foldionepapyrus3441
@foldionepapyrus3441 Год назад
@@boumxyz I didn't say they were bad at all, just that they are not so valuable as to be making it instantly so far into S-teir they remain there even if they had loads of other negative traits added. Feats are quite varied but they are never really required at low level for a potent build, often they are not even going to be useful at all at those very low levels as everyone NPC and PC has so little survivability the skill they provide doesn't get used as the target dies instead. They are generally more a rounding out of a build with useful features that only really become useful once you have some class levels and abilities for it synergise with. Also the points he assigned for more ASI at the start are really really paltry in comparison to the amount a feat has been valued at... So sacrificing that many points of ASI to take a feat being used as a benchmark for the free feat it would end up way undervalued!

I saw your "gut instinct" list and knew that Reborn was going to get quite the jump. It has so many built in features. I had a Reborn Tabaxi (MPMotM) for extra [edit: climb] speed, Stealth, and Perception, then made a Soulknife around it. At level 6, with access to Guidance, he really couldn't fail any reasonable check that the DM sent my way.

Both directions, really- anything that would pull races at the extremes toward the middle. Some that come to mind off the bat for the low end are giving Tieflings an additional resistance to necrotic damage and/or maybe some temporary flight like Aasimar get, and High Elves getting an added boost to their spellcasting ability score or spell save DC.

I don't think the Fizban's Dragonborn breath weapon was overvalued, even if you discount its synergy with the Dragon Fear feat. Making it work off of the Attack action instead of being a full Action on its own really makes it a game-changer, especially for martial characters. Not just because you can attack and use the breath weapon once you get Extra Attack, but because it can be used while also still activating abilities that require taking the Attack action, like the Monk's Flurry of Blows or the BA shove from the Shield Master feat. It's difficult to assign a point value to something that nebulous, but just seeing how many different interactions are opened up by that simple of a change is pretty build-defining.

Ooh, Chris acknowledges that Vedalken's saving throw ability was maybe rated too low. That was probably my biggest gripe. As far as making builds with the races at the top of the tier list--ehh, most of the characters at the top of the tier list are free flight races. A lot of DMs don't allow free-flight races, so unlike a lot of treantmonk builds I don't know that I would be able to take such a build and just show up to a table with it.

A criterion independent of those racial features that I think could have been accounted for is "how many of the game's classes would this race's features benefit?" A race that would be great on all or most classes deserves a little bit extra than one that would only work out best for a few. This is not a condemnation of your series by any means. I thoroughly enjoyed watching every video, and while I do think the point assignment is somewhat subjective, your method is certainly far more fair than assigning races to ranks on a whim or based solely on singular features. There is probably no perfect way to do this, but yours is the closest and most thorough that I have seen anywhere on the internet. People should stop making D&D tier lists unless they can match or outdo the effort you put into yours. :P

Just came across this video and I like the series as a whole! Giving a point value to every feature and then adding them up is probably about as close as you can get to making an "objective" ranking of races, given just how many variables go into making such a list. I feel like adding a category for synergy that could give up to 20 points would be a good addition, with the requirements being how many features work together for the same types of builds and do they interact well together, making races that have that synergy go up a tier compared to ones that don't.
@lifetake3103
@lifetake3103 Год назад
I think the point about the system not taking into account synergy made me appreciate your subclass tier list from a while back even more. That list really focused on how well to make a build and it really shined in highlighting things working well that can then translate to doing well in the game. So while a list like this highlights some races that gets a lot of things that can be usable, it also slightly hides races that have features you can build around like you stated with the Tortle. All that said I still heavily enjoyed this systematic approach and as you also said really helps point out things about races that might not get noticed by all.
@thebitterfig9903
@thebitterfig9903 Год назад
Great Series, Best Tier List NA, even if there are disagreements, since the process and openness were the best. Personally, I’m glad synergy isn’t really accounted for. There will be contexts where some races exceed the tier score, and some where they don’t. I wouldn’t hate a +10 to -10 point adjustment based on subjective impressions of synergies, but I think it works well as is. The one spot where potential synergies were taken into account were the Dragonmarks’ expanded spell lists, and I kinda feel they were ranked higher because of it. But the great thing about this tier list is that a minor disagreement on points for a feature doesn’t poison the well. The structure of the tier list and points system is just such a great place for all of us to begin our own analysis. Water Breathing is an odd duck, tho. I guess the key is that most games aren’t amphibious. Either it really matters, and might be necessary for a campaign, or else it’s useless because the DM won’t put you in situations where it matters. Players being put in situations where their characters can breathe can be so deadly, so all-or-nothing that it’s hard for a DM to put in just a little drowning.

I think my biggest surprise was how incredibly high you ranked flight. I think if I had been doing this initially my gut instinct would've been around 50-60 points. But considering it more it is a really powerful feature on its own so anything with it does make a pretty incredible race. It's funny to see how a lot of the PHB races are so low ranked. Those still tend to be the ones I think of first when making a new character so might be worth branching out a bit more.

Really appreciate all the work and the thought process that went into this rather massive project. I'm wondering about how the concept of complimenting existing classes might figure in to all of this. The fairy was the big winner, but it seems like the fairy also seems kind of finicky about what classes it plays well with. I was watching a video that you did on building a Moon Druid and I think you used LizardFolk (I have to admit that I was secretly hoping that fairy would be the best choice). I think LizardFollk was very likely a better choice and yet LizardFolk didn't seem to do all that well in ranking. Natural Armor seems to solve a lot of problems, I really like playing a Tortles and Loxodon for that reason (maybe someday an Autognome too). Back to Fairies, I'd be curious to know which class or classes would suit the fairy best. Maybe a ranger or a ranged weapon fighter? I think flight might become more important when playing with a 3-d VTT, there is a certain squishiness factor &/or need to arrange ability scores a certain way, in order to accommodate flight and the limitations on armor. And then falling is bad.

I'd agree with your gut on the Tortle far more than the points system - that natural armour is huge for many of the traditionally squashy classes, giving a level 1 Tortle wizard more AC than most level 20's would have even while festooned with loot... Which is another thing this points system fails to account for at all - the synergy between race and class/role/playstyle for which the Tortle is a great case study. That synergy would really shift some of the scores around hugely, so I think in many ways the list needs to be done again with different values assigned to some skills for lists roughly focusing on 'martial' and 'spellcaster' or 'tanky' and 'glass cannon'. As in the Tortles case its natural armour is of very little gain (maybe even none) for the monk/barbarian, only a tiny bit more for the classes that actually must wear armour to get their AC - as now you don't ever get caught without, but it is really big for those that generally get no meaningful AC at all. So for the spellcasters it would easily be jumping up to an A and maybe even S tier as a way to have huge AC for free! And for the martial at lower levels it certainly counts for a fair bit more than the higher, but it still opens up other build options a bit as you don't need to have the stats to effectively use that armour etc, but still probably languishes in the lower half somewhere.. There is also that debate about how to really value features that can potentially be replicated by spells - assume its a small party and the odds of the spell slot(s) required to match the racial skill being desperately missed is quite alot higher than a big party - those slots account for a much bigger percentage of the groups potential when the party is smaller. Then there is the whole does the party even have that spell available, which for a smaller party is much less likely than the large. And as some of these effects can be replicated only by concentration spells - that is a big limiting factor for the spell caster and potentially TPK level of risk for the group if concentration is ever lost. So for myself I'd say the existence of spells that give the same effect is not a major game changer to the value the skill should have as there are no certainties that ability can be replicated when it is useful, and the spell slot and concentration issues mean your party may have to forgo something else that would actually be really useful to replicate it. But for really big parties I could see that skill being less valuable as it can be replicated as needed.

I wouldn't say I learned anything about individual races, as I study the books pretty well myself. But seeing them arrayed as a ranking, was very interesting. I was not much surprised at the top or bottom ratings, even though I'd have rated some individual features differently. Those at the top were very clearly superior, and those at the bottom simply lacked any redeeming features. Personally, I try to steer clear of those top ranked races because they have features that are so strong that they supersede build quality. I find the fun of building something strong out of a suboptimal foundation more rewarding. As such... I'd love to see a series of builds titled something like "Rocky Starts," that doesn't go past level 3 or 4, and demonstrates taking those weaker races and subclasses (probably not together) and turning them into builds that are strong enough to be fun.

I think it could be fun for you to revisit the series to see how you would assign secondary scores based on build defining features. I agree Tortle is probably good where it’s at as a general choice, but maybe it’s got a different score for x,y, and z builds. That could be fun and not all the species would even need to be discussed because many or most don’t have build defining features. The only other thought I have at the end (?) of this series is that flight scoring might need some tweaks. Personally I think it is really strong and worth those points in general, but then it becomes next to useless in a dungeon delve, whereas a lot of lower value features would remain relevant and feats would definitely overshadow flight. So it’s definitely tricky and I don’t necessarily disagree with how it was scored. The one exception I don’t get, because a lot of people feel this way, is the old 50’ Volo flight speed. I much prefer the flight speed that moves upward with buffs.

Two interesting things throughout this series were the ranking of dampir and the point value of an ability score point. At the start of the series, I thought the value of an ability score point was ridiculously low given the comparative value of a feat, but as i continued to watch, it became more understandable. I think this is one of the cases where you did take synergy into account. While the half elf has comparable ability scores to vuman (equivalent to two asis for both), the feet will be far more useful if it is chosen to match a build. For the dampirs, I was surprised by the point value for wall walking. I hadn’t really considered the tactical value of it before.

I had a Simic Hybrid Artificer. Having Manta Glide and Carapace were basically like 2 free always-on infusions. It was great. Meant that I didn't need to grab enhanced defence, and having manta glide was a cheap version of winged boots from level 1 as opposed to needing to use Fly or actually have that infusion. I can understand why it scores so low but damn is it great for an Artificer build. Same for the Rock Gnome which is also in D-tier.

My main interest in the series was for a frame of reference for my homebrew race. I put it in low-mid S tier based on your system. Half-Dragon: Humans with horns and Tails, 3 Subraces for the 3 main types of Dragons (Chromatic, Metallic, Gem) - Gift of the [Subrace] Dragon: you have the Gift of the [Subrace] Dragon Feat. (100 points because its a free feat but you cant choose the perfect feat for your build) - Magical Bloodline: Your Draconic Ancestry leaves residual magic power in your Blood. You can cast the Prestidigitation cantrip at will. (5p) - Dragon Tongue: Proficient in Persuasion or Intimidation. If already Proficient, gain Expertise. (5p) 110 points total.

I still personally think that Kalashtar’s telepathy should’ve been worth more points, not only does it grow as you level becoming the furthest range telepathy for a racial feature after level 13 but it also has the ability to grant a creature the ability to speak back and they can do so an infinite number of times, so it’s basically a infinite free casting of the 5th level spell Telepathic bond with likely a better top range.

My takeaway is that I kinda want to make my own tier list like this. I'd definitely assign some points differently and I'm interested to see the results. Other than that, I had a thought that I'd love to see ideas for fixing the D lineages. Ofc Dragonborn already have fixes, but all the others.

Also, I have to start looking outside of VMan, CustLin, Hill Dwarf, and Stout Halfling. Missing many opportunities to play unique characters.

I have to say one of the things I like about the Lineages (Dhampir, Hexblood, Reborn) is that basically I can still be the race they came from. For instance, lets say I like the theme of a tiefling. Lots to lean on in narrative in there. But I don't like any of its racial abilities. In comes in the lineage and I keep all of what I like about tiefling and now got some different features. I think that to me increases the value of them. I hope they do it again in another book sometime.

One question, I remember on your Druid subclass ranking you said something along the lines of your favorite ones were actually the b tiers, not the ones which ranked highest. Is that the case here as well? Are your favorite racial options in A or B tier too? Also would love to see more builds on the racial options that fell on the middle or lower end of the S tier. While a flying build can (and will) be a fun video, too many DMs I know don’t allow it, therefore some of the others will be more accessible. Either way thanks for your hard work, insight, and jokes.

I'm mostly satisfied with the rankings, save for how many points you gave to flying. But this is more because most of the DMs I play with have the tendency to find ways to negate the advantage of flight. Coincidentally, they also spread out monsters out in encounters and always pick monsters who have both melee and ranged attacks.

I think a more advanced system would weigh the features by the consequences of their failure. For example, poison immunity is nice but without it the worst case scenario is you take some poison damage and have disadvantage on attacks. However, fail a save vs a magical effect and you can find yourself on the astral plane.

I did my own, definitely not subjective ranking of races and I was really surprised to see lots of races I never considered scoring high. And there are races that I really like thematically that scored abysmally (I'm looking at you regular Tiefling). I must have learned about 30 races I had never considered ever because the first, fleeting impression didn't make me want to go further. All in all it told me that I was probably reducing my d&d experience to a very small subset of what the game had to offer. Also that a lot of races got shafted mechanically for balance sake (poor minotaur).

The thing I would have changed is the point range for each tier. Each tier should span the same number of points, giving a better picture of where the average truly lies, and not inflating or deflating any one range. The ranges as given artificially distribute the options roughly evenly amongst the tiers - which i believe was intended, but I dont get. Were it me, I would have done something more like: D: 25-44 C: 45-64 B: 65-84 A: 85-104 S: 105+ Great series regardless, and thanks for all the hard work!

I said it before, but I think it might be worth it to go through every race and rank them again by their highest point feature (or two added together if they're essentially two halves of one feature). This way the options that have the highest impact on builds people make are ranked highest.

I'm playing a PHB forest gnome right now, and can confirm that the gnome cunning feature is way more impactful than this list implies. One thing that this process really showed me was that as useful as this is, its not absolute, because while certain races are "better" or "worse" than others, it also depends on the class you're building. The tortle AC is kinda useless for a fighter and actually a detriment to an armorer artificer, but is really nice on a wizard, druid, or sorcerer. There is no way to account for that in this type of ranking system, nor would I expect it. That just comes into play when deciding on a character concept / build. Another thing that it made me think of is that while I wouldn't want to allow players to build their own point buy race (anyone else remember D&D 2e Skills and Powers?), when designing an RPG, this type of thinking should really be used, because its obvious WotC didn't build races with any degree of balance consideration.

Enjoyed all the videos. The point system is intriguing and is helping me think about racial feature design for my own homebrew. How would you rate resistance to a physical damage type if this existed as a racial feature? I feel it wouldn't be as strong as a free feat or endless flight, so I'm surprised it's not anywhere!
@abcrasshadow9341
@abcrasshadow9341 Год назад
It is very strong and mostly impactful but then again you might have resistance to slashing damage and all the dm does is throw bludgeoning and piercing damage. See earth genasi for a inkling of how Chris would rank a feature similar. If a race got an always on BPS resistance it would be gamebreaking-ly good if you only got 1 it would still be good but limited and it would limit which classes you would want to take. Just like any optimizer would never take earth genasi and barbarian (assuming bladeward was not a spell) because the features overlap and even a minor overlap such as a single resistance out of the 3 rage gives you would seriously hamper the excitement from picking a barbarian with that character no matter how much their other features might synergize with the barbarian kit, ie. The racial features would have to outway the dead feature significantly to even consider it. Which is funny because a dnd race in some cases lose race and class synergy because they share design space. Also funny how all spellcasting features mostly synergize with other spellcasting features. Anyways rambling over, have a nice time of day

What I picked up from this series... *ahem* ... "I will never, ever, allow any non-legacy races. It kills the unique qualities that they used to have, and makes the fantasy-world just a bit too... sugary." Yeah, players want cool abilities, like flying or magic resistance. But when world-building, there are only so many openings for a fully fleshed-out race (unless you're talking spacejammer, I guess, since that's the conglomeration of races from 1000's of worlds. But I digress.). I don't like the notion that any race can be universally strong wherever they choose to be instead of in a field that would justify their unique physical characteristics. Loxodons SHOULD be stronger than halflings as a race! It's just common sense. I get that PCs might be the exception to the rule, but that's easy to remedy... Just make floating racial ability score bonuses officially OPTIONAL. Like they do with skills or equipment, a disclaimer - "Elves get +2 to Dex and +1 to Intelligence. With the DM's permission, you can give these bonuses to two different ability scores instead." That would solve the problem for new player who want their halfling luchador muscle-man, or their oddly nimble loxodont assassin, but still retain the time-tested ability score modifiers that are inherent to the race and thus, appease the grognards as well. I know not everyone agrees with me. That's fine... this is my opinion, and I'm allowed to have it. Everyone in my local gaming circle feels the same way I do, so I know I'm not alone. But yeah, there are thousands of D&D players all over the world, and having more options is something that lots of people want. But not everyone agrees that faeries can be medium-sized or that kenku can speak normally or any race can have a +2 bonus to Strength because otherwise "It's racist." Not everyone feels that way; in fact a LOT of players don't feel that way. And the rules should reflect that, while still providing options for those that want options. Just my two cents, since you asked.
@luminous3558
@luminous3558 7 месяцев назад
I mean if you read a bit into most races you can kinda get where they would assign their +2 +1 ASIs but yeah its kinda annoying how WotC removes identity from races like the Orc in MotM. No more alignment suggestions or lore about what your fellow orcs have been doing historically and culturally.

The only thing that I would change in my theoretical personal tier list is that I wouldn't give so many points to the "free feat" that Vumans and Custom Lineage get, I mean it's a BIG BONUS yes but to me it's not an instant S rank, instant A rank yes, not S. My reasoning being that feats can eventually be grabbed at Lv 4 by anyone whereas special racial powers can only be picked at character creation, a Vuman Wizard with War Caster is just not as powerful as an Owlin Wizard who can fly at will for both utility and defense or a Stout Halflling Wiz who has a plethora of defensive features and of course can pick War Caster at a later level... These of course are very subjective opinions based on what I value when making characters.

The only thing that deeply bugs me is the feature that literally kills you for the locanthah is ronly rated a 10 (if a feature can get you killed if you get knocked unconscious or put in jail then its worse than any other racial feature in the game) than some of the actually useful features of other classes. Otherwise this feels great i did this a while back for classes and subclassses and it forces you to think so i hope this was fun and not tedious and you get to do more like it.
@lifetake3103
@lifetake3103 Год назад
The locanthah feature is honestly so hard to rate. Because of its severity it no longer becomes an issue just the player has to play around, but the Dm has to play around it as well. Getting knocked unconcious could be a death sentence. So the question becomes does the dm let that sentence unfold? Oftentimes the answer is no.
@insertname5371
@insertname5371 Год назад
@@lifetake3103 I mean you can pretend it doesn't exist but it does kill you. At ant point if you role 3 death saves fails the dm could just say naw you live anyway but neither should you do that nor should we judge as if that was the case.
@lifetake3103
@lifetake3103 Год назад
@@insertname5371 my point is that of all the features discussed throughout this series that feature by far has the most dm fiat in how much of a burden it is. And at the end of the day most dms are gonna have water around to not have their pc dry out to death. I’m not saying they’ll ignore it, but something will normally be around because guess what? Not the fellow oarty members, the player, or the dm want to see the player dry out to death.
@insertname5371
@insertname5371 Год назад
@@lifetake3103 It definitely doesn't have the most fiat. But if your dm is having to bend reality to not have the feature kill you its a bad feature. and the if theres water around doesn't even matter most of the time the locanthah will not die becuase of lack of water it will die because of the unforeseen consequences of an effect which makes it so they would not have access. In that case just handwaving death is the same as just hand waving death saves. You just actively ignore the mechanics of the game and definitely can't say that the race is up to dm fiat becuase your not following the rules.

If we are talking about optimization Dhampir being below Gem Dragonborn is criminal. 35ft move speed for kiting, hands free spider climb is almost as good as flight, and you can bite people outside of combat for a big boost to your next initiative. Also, I don't think enough merit is given to the fact that Winged Tiefling can fly in medium armor. The durability difference is enough to push them above Fairy assuming you armor dip imo.

To be fair to yourself on small races, you were assigning negative points for reduced movement speed and that’s the main negative they used to have, and the newer ones don’t have that penalty so they’re not taking the hit to their scores. That’s really the only thing worth factoring in for small vs. medium characters and you sort of covered it organically. The difference between weapons and certain spells are build specific or niche enough, that the ability to hide or get into places more easily makes it a wash.
