Race day in Indianapolis! The car is prepared, the strategies set. 500 miles awaits!
A full race simulating the 1987 500 against 32 others. I'll be driving the March 87C Cosworth powered machine qualified by Steven Chassey in the real race. After qualifying 5th last weekend I have turned this week towards race preparation to get myself as ready as possible for this one. But preparation can only go so far, with a high likelyhood of chaos at some point, it will be how well I can survive and adapt which is the key to victory.
Can I make it all 500 miles?

My guess would be taht it was mainly the random numbers, but I did notice a couple of times in the pits when going down the gears and when getting away from a standstill that the rev-limited was hit. That obviously took a toll as well, if it was enough, no way to be certain. Really good drive, just bad luck not to get to go all the way to the finish.

1:11:37 The three tire stops are period correct. They had five-man crews, so three tire changers, fuel, and vent/air jacks. Left fronts would only be changed rarely (usually if damaged) on ovals when they ran the bias plys. The sixth man (and default four-tire changes) started in ‘88 I believe.

Yeah I’m this guy apparently. At least I’m replying to myself to contain it… 1:41:57 the max fuel allotment was real also. USAC and CART didn’t agree about much during this era but they both had the same rule (USAC at Indy and CART everywhere else) where you got enough fuel in the car plus the pit tank to finish if you averaged 1.8 MPG.

Hiro finished 9th in the US 500 one time because there was so much attrition. I remember watching Indycar throughout the 90s and it was one engine failure after another. So I'd say they have the realism down pat.

Such a bummer that your race ended early, but I loved watching every minute of what you completed! I think a P3 or P2 would've been possible if the engine lasted the whole race. It's miraculous that Fredriksson's Buick powered car didn't blow up. Still, an overall great effort and a great stream! Thanks for all the great content :)

Sorry for your trouble. Few too many laps left for the Ralph DePalma "get out and push" option. 😁 (DePalma and Jeffkins at the 1912 500 is one of my all-time favorite sports stories.)

Aren't they? I bought them because they were on sale and i wanted something a bit easier to put on and off than the racing boots. I like the boots I have but they are a pain enough to put on that I barely ever wore them

Better visual quality than the real thing - Last year's race broadcast on NBC looked horrible. It looked like they were using 1987 NTSC equipment. I turned it off.

Gutted. It reminded me of all those times I went deep into the Indy 500: The Simulation game way back when and had a similar problem end my race--too many times to count! Still, the sim race realism was very cool. Only 11 cars were running at the end of the real '87 500 and one of those was something like 70 laps behind!

Indianapolis 500 History with Steve Manning 1986 Bobby Rahal completed the 500 miles (800 km) in 2 hours, 55 minutes, 43.470 seconds; becoming the first driver to complete the Indianapolis 500 in less than three hours. His average speed of 170.722 broke Rick Mears' 1984 record. Rahal later claimed his fuel light had come on during the final lap, and a post-race inspection showed that only two gallons of methanol fuel remained in his tank

Great video. Thank u for posting. I m wondering why u didn’t gear it for 4 th gear thru the short shoot then 5 gear for the straights. Keep 6th for slip stream . Anyway. Nice drive. 👍🇦🇺🥱

I can confirm- In RL the weekend can even before you get to the main race. And if you are rolling on a small budget it can be very very very painful…. Until the next weekend.

My Dad, RIP, took us to Indy every year. If I was to sign up n pay for for an online racing league, and would wanna race Open Wheel and/or Nascar, which should I choose?, iRacing, or this ISO? Can I race clean enough with an Xbox controller, or should I invest into a steering wheel like you have? I like your videos, watched your vintage nascar race last night.

I heard you say how many hours you were preparing and practicing for this race and it was heartbreaking for all of us watching and rooting for you to see it end like this. Your passion for Indycar is quite obvious for anyone who has followed your channel for any length of time.... and it was very rewarding to see you get to participate in a competitive online Indycar race. Question: After putting in so much time and energy for this race... does it make you less likely to race in an online multiplayer race in Automobilista 1 which has random failures? (Just wondering what your thoughts are on this... as I for one would really enjoy seeing you race again with this league)

could have just been destiny man didn't really use the car up that badly IMO. even had a lot of breathing room on the top end at the end of the long straight, in fact if I had to guess why your car was a little off the pace you might have had too much headroom on your 5th gear
