Today Radio Free Mormon, finds himself deep behind enemy lines, as he tackles the recent retraction of the faith promoting story told by Elder Jeffrey R Holland about one brother finding his long lost sibling while on his mission. Take a deep breath, grab your ice cold herbal tea, and enjoy an intellectual walk though the history of this episode in LDS History.
When we do, we learn this false faith promoting story was used fpor years by Elder Holland and others in order to build faith. Did the family really come forward, or did something else more deceptive happen?
As always feedback is much appreciated. Visit us at MormonDiscussionPodcast.org or radiofreemormon.org

@romanstarr01
@romanstarr01 2 года назад
@@stevenhenderson9005 .. Feeling good about a story of fiction is simply a human derived emotion, just like watching a movie romance. Those have nothing to do with a religion or a conversion to a belief system. Apostle Holland related a story and conveying it as story of fact, when in fact, it never happened. What does the Holy Ghost do in this situation.?
@stevenhenderson9005
@stevenhenderson9005 2 года назад
@@romanstarr01 See what your failing to understand is that there is no difference between your feelings as a human condition or feelings from what religions call the Holy Ghost. It is exactly the same thing and you are correct, these feelings happen whether it's a fictional story or if it is a true story. This understanding forces us to identify two completely different truths. 1) Physical Truth 2) Spiritual Truth Physical Truth: requires physical evidence to back up the physical truth in order to be considered physically true. The more physical evidence we gather, brings us to a state of even more truth. Spiritual Truth: requires spiritual evidence to back up the spiritual truth in order to be considered spiritually true. The more spiritual evidence we gather, brings us to a state of even more spiritual truth. You can't discover physical truth through spiritual evidence and you can't discover spiritual truth through physical evidence. The physical evidence of physical truth is based on our physical condition by what we physically see, physically touch, physically taste, or physically smell. The spiritual evidence of spiritual truth is based on our spiritual condition by our feelings created by what we imagine in our mind of what we spiritually see, spiritually touch, spiritually taste, or spiritually smell. When someone writes a book or creates a movie, they use the gift of imagination (Holy Ghost) that tells them what to write or create. We use this same gift of imagination in making decisions in life, because we can usually foresee the outcome that our decisions will make. This is what makes all human beings prophets, seers, and revelators. We just do it all the time so naturally we tend to just blow it off as a human condition, but our abilities as human beings is just so miraculous. Now it is important to understand that the physical realm that we are in helps us to understand the invisible world of the spiritual realm. The only way our imagination works the way it does is because what comes to our minds imagination is what we know in the physical. Now because we are in the physical realm it is hard for us to understand the spiritual, so we use the physical experience to help us understand spiritual. Just like the Bible teaching about heavenly crowns, treasures in heaven, or other physical things to try and help us understand the spiritual realm. Now at this point if you are really intrigued just ask me to explain how collectively we are God the Eternal Father.
@romanstarr01
@romanstarr01 2 года назад
@@stevenhenderson9005 .. Apostle Holland did not create this story, or use any imagined {self created thought process for purposes of fiction}. Moreover, you did not answer my question, but let me emphasize - Apostle Holland, for the purposes of a faith promoting story, is telling his audience {no need for any Holy Ghost intervention} this story is fact. How does the Holy Ghost simply ignore Holland, giving the green light on a bogus story, yet is to reaffirm truth to an audience in a fabrication? Do you see the inconsistency in this ?

oooouu, yeah, what if the story was entirely made up, but some family in Idaho had a situation that barely had some overlap, reach out to Holland, but he knows it was a complete fabrication, but now has these pesky members who think it's about them? Brilliant. Or, what if like you suggest, there is no real idaho family at all and holland is making them up because for some reason he needs to nix this story as it's getting out of hand or what not? As of yet, i haven't seen any credible evidence that Joseph wasn't just as golden as those plates were. Quite the contrary. He was the best blood of the 19th century. His name was sullied and dirtied by politicians and priestcrafters who will all suffer the wrath of God for it, and that wrath will have been earned in earnest because their lies came from the same source as the hypocrisy and jealousy of the Saducees and Pharisees in The Days Christ established his New Testament Church. Once I had to correct my local leader when he used the ward email list to advocate for specific candidates in a local election. You comparing Holland to the writers of the 4 gospels, just does not and cannot equate, if one is a believer of Jesus Christ and His divinity. Holland is in no way, shape or form an “apostle” of the Lord. His retracting this story along with his Wrong Road story do indeed undermine what the LDS church purports: that it’s the true church and run by Jesus Christ. But trying to equate this fallacy with the gospels and the New Testament don’t cut it. That was you trying to put your own conclusions and beliefs into what this entire episode was about. Q15 don’t have spiritual experiences outside their own “God thoughts.” They are so insulated from normal life, and so surrounded by sycophants seeking to climb the church ladder that they no longer have interpersonal interactions common to the common person. They live so deep in the back bubble that the bubble is all that they know anymore. I feel genuine sorrow for their so very limited life experience. Although, I guess that they happily live without any fear of financial shortfall in their several homes and shielded covenant path. Imagine living an entire fable disconnected from reality albeit a fable free from worry. Even though they have already obtained a guaranteed seat with God in the highest kingdom, how deserving of pity if this delusion proves without foundation. Truly, I pity them and wish they could be enlightened to the Turner Show they are living.

The biggest problem for Mormonism isn’t Joseph Smith or the Book of Mormon or Jeff Holland, it’s that whole bloody human Jesus sacrifice thing, that Jesus supposedly “died for sin,”and that he was the messiah and “fulfillment.” And that the Bible’s the word of a god.

So what is the purpose of this criticism? Are you telling us that because of this mistake by Jeffrey R. Holland, God has disappeared and there is no Jesus Christ? He is not the first apostle to make an error of this kind. Peter made a mistake when he denied Christ. Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. The apostles after the crucifixion had contentions among themselves. Several of the original twelve apostles of the last dispensation were excommunicated from the church. Members of the church from the beginning have repeated stories that were not accurate. So now General Authorities will be counseled not to tell stories unless they are personal witnesses of what they are recounting. What apostles are called to do is to be special witnesses of Jesus Christ. Spencer W. Kimball said that profanity is the attempt of a weak mind to make a strong statement. One thing about Jeffrey R. Holland is that even when he is wrong, he is not using profanity. So how about not using profanity when criticizing Jeffrey R. Holland?

As you make assumptions about some elements which you enlarge to be totally untrue, I can only think how Christ told the Jews how they "strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. You make it sound as if nothing is true.

I think these fake stories are given out knowingly as a way to mesmerize their true believing audience that will never hear the retraction. If "we" know the truth so what -- we are already lost souls.

So gross you have ads on here. Ads plus asking donations. I’ve donated but no longer see the need since you keep interrupting your vids with ads for Praeger (sp?) and Jews for Jesus. Come on, guys. If I have to watch another dr squatch ad I’ll punch a kitten. You know you can change the placement and number of ads, right? I *think this must be news to you

Moving our older content to RU-vid is done with an effort to reach believing Latter-day Saints. Assuming you are a listener already, all of these old episodes are available on our website mormondiscussionpodcast.org or on apps like Apple Podcast or Stitcher and would be "Ad free"

JR Holland is a chump and he went down as a chump in front of a BBC reporter who interviewed him in his own office. JR Holland is not a prophet seer or revelator. He is a great powerful speaker in rooms full of people who already agree with him but take him out of that arena (or any of the apostles/prophets for that matter) and they go down looking like buffoons. Gordon B Hinckley straight out lied to Mike Wallace and Larry King about polygamy and about teaching the doctrine of plural Gods and Godhood being a humans ultimate destiny. Instead of being bold and powerful in the face of critics, the brethren always shrink away and try to “hide” or straight out lie about the more weird and/or strange aspects of our history and/or doctrine. Gordon B. Hinckley did NOT want the “satan attacking Joseph in the woods” scene in “Joseph Smith: Prophet of the Restoration”. I worked for the LDS Motion Picture Studio in Provo, UT while they were filming it...and the brethren were very divided on what they wanted shown and what not because some viewed some parts as “too strong” for the members. The prophets and apostles of today are nothing like the ones taught of in the scriptures. They do not go boldly proclaiming the truth to the four corners of the world. They sit in their air conditioned offices and consult with one another over church policy and when they do leave, they go and visit members around the globe who are waiting and drooling over every word that escapes their lips. They are corporate suits. Nice, wonderful men for the most part, I don’t doubt that they are good, law abiding citizens and good fathers and husbands. But they actively hide truth from the members so that we “stay faithful” and “stay in the boat” to quote Russell Nelson and J. Holland

Not cognitive dissonance just think life is better focusing on the good than always and I mean always focusing and looking for every bad thing someone does. What a sad life. I have more important things to do like find someone in need and help them. Congrats on a productive life of fault finding. Must be gratifying.

@@terrywalker839 When the leaders of any organization are held in such high regard that they cant be criticized...that is a cult. And a cult tactic from cult members is to criticize people who criticize their leaders. You being a good person and finding people to help out is awesome, but is not exclusive to mormonism, or theism, for that matter. Bill gates is an atheist and he gives 100s of times more money to charity than the church, and he has less money than the church. Same with Bezos, and many other billionaires. With nothing but respect for your beliefs...but...If you feel that your leaders can’t be called out when they flat out lie (did you even listen to the video??) than that is at the very least a cult-like sentiment. The pope, the leader if the JW’s, the leader of big companies....all these people should not get a “free pass” from their members just because they view them as “sacred”. A member of the church certainly would have critical thought on what those people say and do. Why do the “brethren” get a free pass? Same goes for Joseph Smith. Man, I lived 40 years as a devout, totally believing mormon. But there came a time when I just HAD to critically look into all the “crap talking” about JS and other leaders. If it is true, I should be able to weed through what is true and false, right? But when the very church admits to many things JS did that don’t square with what the correlated narrative has been my whole life, and what I taught as a missionary, in a bishopric, in a stake presidency, what I’ve taught my children....then things start to unravel. (Gospel Topic Essays) Sometimes we believe so much that we completely close our minds to any other possibility and instead of the discomfort that uncomfortable truths bring to our mind, we shut it off. That IS comfirmation bias and cognitive dissanonce, and it is rampant among high demand religion members, especially members of the church. If the church works for you, great. If you can see past certain uncomfortable truths, fine. I know I did for a looong time. But when you or leaders of the church criticize and try to silence and shut down speech and gaslight those who have legitimate concerns about true documented history...that is not right and it is abusive and has all the trappings of cult like behavior. My righteous outrage going in defense if the church against some comment someone made on facebook is what led me down the rabbit hole, so if you want to stay faithful...I would suggest staying away from content that doesn’t support what your pre-determined belief of what is true. You might just slip down the rabbit hole and end up in exmo wonderland like us. I thought my testimony was diamond-hard, rock solid, unbreakable. And honest study and pursuit of truth, not laziness or lax-ness, is what led me out. Its much easier to just insult, discredit, and silence those who leave, rather than honestly look into why they chose to leave something so supposedly amazing.

@feebeedee Not sure it's cognitive dissonance as much as willful ignorance in this case.
