When the prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were martyred, there was a vacuum within Leadership at the top. You have heard stories of the Transfiguration of Young in to Smith. You've heard that Young was given all the Priesthood Keys. But do you really know the story
Today we delve into the process by which Apostles led by Brigham Young became the ruling body in the LDS Church. The different leadership bodies, who had a higher authority and stewardship, what happened at Joseph Smith’s death, who he had appointed as his successor, and how the Quorum of the twelve removed every other possible contender to take leadership upon Joseph’s death.
As always feedback is much appreciated. Visit us at MormonDiscussionPodcast.org or RadioFreeMormon.org

I remember Sunday school or RS lessons about this where the teacher spun out the “logic“ and “spiritual” correctness of this in a way that made it seem like just in case we didn’t have a testimony about it, the lesson would assure us we are safe in the Lord’s own true church. However, when someone’s trying so hard to sell something that is basically faith-based, just that extra effort raises suspicion, leading to the “backfire effect.” As it did with me.

Joseph Smith and Brigham Young’s character and relationship reminds me of Scientology’s charismatic con man L. Ron Hubbard and the violent autocrat David Miscavige. Just like a successful startup begins with an entrepreneurial visionary but requires a business manager to sustain growth.

yes l.ron / David is a great example for what your describing. Joseph just like l.Ron started a crazy story that led to lie filled sci-fi book and they both started "religions" that are really cults. 😳 and brigham and David both made their inherited cults worth billions of dollars by hurting and controlling their delusional sheep.

@@coppersky Nah, my interest in them is more that of the dilettante and less that of the diligent student. I found the brief exposure to the RS/P manuals of JS and BY off-putting enough. I left the LDS church unofficially at 18, just before “my mission”. Everyone was just assuming I would go, but I declared I did not believe Joseph smith was a true prophet and I also denied Jesus that day. I looked for a spiritual teacher and found some community at ananda church of self realization, but later I joined a Kundalini Yoga Practice taught by Stuart Perrin, learning the exercise from his most senior and closest student, Kris. I stuck with the meditation group for 19 years but I left the group, basically to have a family. Now as a father, I’ve been poring over the scriptures and I have my own relationship with God, through the person of Jesus Christ, who is not a mere guru preaching the prosperity Gospel, but salvation for myself and all who will believe and follow him, which means love one another. Long way of saying you are commanded to love one another, and dead if you don’t. I don’t know what else to say, but I do know the way, the Derekh, which in Hebrew means the way. Read Psalm 119 every day for 3 days. I’m not joining a church or a cult ever again! I wish also I could share how the book of Jonah changed my life. To me, it really answers the question “which church should I join” for once and for all. If only Joseph II had read that book more closely, perhaps we would never even have had Mormons. For, if he had read that he would have noticed that Jonah converted Ninevah, that great city, with a 6 word sermon, that God is just as merciful and gracious perhaps even more so to the repentant of heart than any of the sacerdotal elect who day by day burn incense in His holy temple of Zion, more than sixscore persons who know not their right nor their left; and also much cattle”

@@dereklords9688 If it makes any difference Joseph Smith was never commanded to start a church. I'm sure it was probably Sydney Rigdon. Joseph Smith just wanted people to be familiar with the Book of Mormon. As for me, I'm tossing D&C out and all of what the church says. I believe Joseph Smith was called by God to bring the Book of Mormon forward. If one were to read that book, it is actually very anti-mormon. It coincides well with the Bible. I'm not saying any book is perfect, but I believe they are helpful to know God.

Joseph and Oliver were ordained by Peter, James and John as Apostles. Martin Harris, David Whitmer were ordained Apostles before the original twelve were called. It was Oliver, Martin and David who chose the original twelve so after that there was a total of 16 men who held the office of Apostle. Joseph had a first presidency but Frederick G. Williams and Sydney Rigdon were high priests that never held that office. Apostle is the highest office in the Melchizedek Priesthood. Bishop is the highest office in the aaronic priesthood and Patriarch is the highest office in the Patriarchal priesthood.

If you look at the New Testament and the Book of Mormon, it appears that the 12 apostles/12 disciples did lead the church in the aftermath of Jesus.

A baptist minister that I met on my mission made me look like a horse's ass. I told him that Jesus had twelve apostles and that we, the Latter-day Saints, likewise had twelve apostles. He reminded me that there are fifteen -- a quorum of twelve AND the first presidency (consisting of three). Twelve plus three equals fifteen. I didn't have a very good response other than, "Well, people are more wicked in modern times...so...uh...we need more apostles than the people did in Jesus' time...."

Smith seemed set on gaining as much power as he could. I doubt that Joseph Smith was carefully constructing a system with balanced powers. I find it more likely that he Smith was promising different people power as part of his personal power games. Likewise, I suspect that Smith wanted to avoid giving anyone enough authority to challenge his power.

@@Kristy_not_Kristine I was actually thinking about revelations in the Book of Commandments. This book was largely by Smith and Rigdon. Most of the commandments seemed to be self serving. Smith would grant followers powers, but he was always careful to make sure that he was firmly established as the center of the powers.

Today's Community of Christ are the rightful group! Independence, Missouri! Progressive Christians in todays world, with powerful outreach .... research it!
@mrkelvinch1
@mrkelvinch1 2 года назад
From Independence, have partaken in Many CoC services and events. I should inform you that your statement is false. Many "progressive" moves are in direct contrast with the scriptures. Most of them have decided that the BoM is not a true book, and many have agreed that the other scriptures are only fables. They have no more doctrine, and you don't even have to believe in God or Jesus to join. It is not so much a church, as it is a religious club. As for powerful outreach, far from it I'm afraid. They are shrinking in size faster than any of the other factions. If you did a comparison of today's CoC and the RLDS of the late 1800's-early 1900's, there is virtually nothing of similarity. Many of the members are nice folks, but they are not the rightful group, despite coming from the RLDS. The independent restoration groups, which I grew up in and which broke off from the CoC to remain according to the original church practices, are far closer to the rightful church than the CoC, but they are not quite right either. I'm partial to the Second Invitation group out of Brazil myself.

The word apostle means messenger, not prophet. The word disciple means follower with hopefully a well known grasp on the lessons learned as they make it a practice to follow. The word prophet sure as Shinola does not mean Brigham Young. I should know, its my first name and you can research the theology all your life and still miss the etymology and thereby the meaning of the scripture which is Gods law, unbreakable. The gospels are the fulfillment of Gods law and aside Him there is no other savior. Read it in Isaiah yourself. The truth that meaning is lost in translation cannot ever compare to the vast loss of any lesson by the understanding of the language in which its written and to understand and realize this any will require the study of etymology to know the word definitions as many have several and some hold only one. Definition is the coptic key to grasping theology not its translation from one language to another even if the few words found had no known translation anyone can still find what the origin of a word meant to the people placing little belief of their own faith and its vision lacking of any loyalty for never knowing what many words even mean as they read along literally so many spoon fed nearly in a hypnotic state and have no revelation no remembrance of the word, by the time the church meets for lunch they have already forgotten what they have been just instructed of to mean anything. Reason should never stop anyone from doing anything even if 100% of others around them think of it. They have eyes but do not see, ears yet do not hear.
