RAILWAY RIFLE - Full Guide - Location, Plan, Mods, Stats, Legendary - Fallout 76 

The Railway Rifle requires nuclear material, because in Fallout 3 you crafted the gun using a "fission battery". Spikes don't have gunpowder or energy to propel them, so the gun itself needs a power source.

One thing to note about explosive is that you cannot recycle spikes from dead enemies. Whatever change the prefix makes to the projectiles removes the recovery chance. On the opposite side if you have two shot it is possible to recover more spikes from an enemy than what you used to kill them.

My favourite gun. I’ve used a quad explosive for long time now. Apart from my fixer in stealth, I find it hard to try any other gun out. Just love the sound and damage this gun can do. No sniping no sneak but easy ammo. 👍

I LOVE the choo-choo! 😂 I have a Bloody Explosive one and it's my favorite to use, honestly. I run a stealth character so Fixers and Handmades are what I switch off to a lot, but really the only time I don't use it is inside West Tek or at The Whitespring because the explosive effect almost always hits the bots and turns them aggressive. But for events like Line In The Sand or Guided Meditation where you just crouch and mow down enemies, it's great. I just hop back up and crouch down a lot 😅

I would like to see a non legendary gun vs a god rolled version of the same gun on a boss to see how big the difference really is, preferably a fixer, railway, or enclave plasma flammer.

I think the railway rifle is my all time fav weapon in all the fallouts. I have an automatic ve one that works great. Usually it only takes 1-2 shots per enemy so the reload does not bother me that much.

I pray every day for a prime automatic receiver.

Quad railway rifle is my main weapon, i love the FFR and explosive ones, 50%crit is also nice. It just break so easily, i cant get over a Queen fight without it breaking at least once - the 3rd star with lower breakage go very nice with this gun.

Choo choo! Love my Railway Rifle for VAT Commando build. I prefer the AA as it seems to drop enemies faster, but it is hard to tell because they all drop so fast :D

Q50 choo choo is my go-to weapon for boss fights. Blows the doors off my Q5015r Fixer.

As far as I know... you go with automatic and short barrel... it will mean least VATS consumption for this gun. It seems that anything that affects hip-fire or recoil also reflects the amount of VATS used. Always use reflex... for some reason it decreases vats as well

I would theorize the nuclear material heats the steam in the railway rifle to create pressure.

rolled a VE 90 reduced today. zonked every ghoul in whitespring. took 2/3 spikes a ghoul. they all drop like 12/15.

I had no idea that there was no automatic prime receiver. I've been using it primed as a rifleman and I agree that reloading would be constant without a quad so I think I'll just keep it as is. I've been following your ammo farming route near Vault 76 and have a ton of ultracite railway spikes accumulated. Thanks.

My quad railroad is proof that 1 and 2 ⭐️ can still be good. Mine is 1 ⭐️ but it rips things apart. I run unyielding and even with the automatic receiver I’m getting 200 damage per shot. The ammo is so heavy though. I have just over 4,000 rounds and maxed bandolier but it’s still 80 pounds. 😅

I just got as a drop a QE +1Per railway rifle. I run a Junkie commando build. Yes using vats is the key to this one. Most things are a quick double tap. Hip fire IS almost impossible to handle unless you hold your aim down the whole magazine from the heavy recoil.

love this weapon, I use it for about 600 levels now. my favorite is B50crit15fr on a bloody non stealth commando with critical savvy. it's a awesome boss killer and I have zero problems to solo earl. obviously it's not for every scorched or Ghoul because of the 10 spikes per clip but for that I use a Q 50vhc Handmade. Choo Choo all day long!! :D

I totally forgot the automatic piston was a plan that needed to be purchased! Spent so much time crafting and scraping railway rifles! Now that it's automatic, my quad explosive railway rifle is just a beast!

Q5025/fr is amazing, with full stealth gear and maybe in a team you can stay in caution on bosses and melt with Crit spam

i'm running this weapon with a bloodied build, full auto and it is the most fun weapon on the whole game, the new skin, with steam ppumping out and the sound effects are fantastic and of course the damage is devastating... just love it..

My quad/ 50crit railway destroys bosses even without extra damage buffs. It's my go to gun for boss fights, ALWAYS!

Love my Qaud Exp railgun. Just wish I could recover spikes like the other guns. I think the Explosive effect doesn't allow the recovery.

i think with addition of 4th star headhunter's, quad will lose its solo spot for first place. (zero ammo cost for 10s after headshot kill). Also this weapon, for a loud weapon, is surprisingly quiet. You can get sneak attacks pretty reliably using a railway rifle if you become familiar with its quirks and change your play style accordingly. Also on a side note, for workshop trolling, because this gun has such massive damage to begin with, two shot ffr vats to the head (with or without crit) is excellent for killing people faster than human reaction time if you catch them unawares. This applies to most rifles but the railway especially since it can easily 110 both shots. You'll probably want to spend a crit just to be safe, but two shot ffr builds crits very fast.

I need to test more which one is my favorite. Got a quad explo, quad 50% crit and quad faster firerate. For my commando build it is my favorite weapon for Earle and the Queen. Vats only of course.

Another comment on the Railway Rifle history and lore therein: a question about Nuclear Material in it. Going back in Fallout alt. reality lore and excellent Fallout 3, it was also a cratable weapon. With a Fission Battery even then ("...as a power source to operate the weapon", from the Fallout Wiki). Which is quite understandable from loveable Fallout lore point of view; where fission batteries are common (and "VERY practical" energy source (beside the crazy but unavoidable weight), unlike our reality and huge nuclear reactors. Thus the small component form of battery - probably century+ worth R&D effort of consumer industry. ("Put a nuclear plant in a mobile!" :D ) Eventually we got a common everyday energy no-refill container (with a typical Falloutish sarcasm-vise humor on behalf of eco-friendly storage. Have in mind that it's a problem even today's with NiCd batteries (and chewing gums!) - not Uranium or similar hazards!!! As long as we have enough RadAway and RadX... Choo-choo!

I use a instagating explosive 90 reduced , with unyeilding with rifleman perks and sneak covert perks ,adrenaline, gun fu , usually it's a one shot kill and I can get a couple before I'm detected. Fun weapon

I have a commando Railway rifle build, using two different RR. One is quad ammo, faster fire rate +1 Per Two is a 2 shot explosive One has a damage listing of 157 dps Two has a damage listing of 296 dps They have identical attachments, no differences. Why the huge damage difference? ALSO ON AN UNRELATED NOTE: DO NOT USE RR FOR RIFLEMAN BUILDS WITH A SINGLE SHOT RECIEVER, ITS BUGGED. when using a single shot reciever, rifleman cards only add 8 dps , clearly broken

i was playing with a noob earlier today. i took him from level 14 to 30 in a couple hours. he wasn't using vats. i showed him the way. i was showing him how leg crafting works. he rolled a couple guns and didn't really get anything cool, so i rolled him a 2* railway. got a quad, double damage last round. not "great," but quad is one of the only ones i'll keep 1*s of. he was all like "HOLY SHIIIIIT!" railways are the strongest weapon in the game IMHO. now that black powders are nerfed, it's pretty much all i use on earl/queen unless i'm on my HG legacy guy. i mainly keep a QE and a Q crits +50 on me. a while back when we could still ammo cheat, i would shoot a bunch of them cheater style and kill bosses no mutation just about all by myself. i can't stand single shot so no ultracite. i pretty much only shoot them in vats, so screw the 2 pound stock that doesn't help much anyway. reflex sight cuz vats. when i'm blowing rails, i like to crit hard and crit often. my blood man is a herbivore so L+L 3 + blight soup = +187% crit damage by itself. then i run these perk cards and modded it for crits, so i'm pretty sure it's doing between a hundread amd nintey four.. five, hundred million, fifty...een thousand, something... its great. ever other shot or so is a crit and most regular jackoffs are dead by then. TOOT TOOT!!! ❤

Anyone notice the railway uses up way more AP in vats than it used to? I remember getting nearly 3 quad clips off per AP bar. Now I can barely get off one clip before my AP is drained.

Main has a quad explosive and some other star. I run bloodied even with this and its epic with a full commando/explosive build. SB's fall from the sky without reloading. It's for when you want something dead yesterday and don't want to wait. But don't like it for Earl or SBQ fights. Have other things I like to use that hit harder but without the fast fire rate.

railway is my strongest gun. all perked and buffed, it's stronger than legacies in vats. i mainly use quads. i got them in explosive, FF, crits +50. i got a few AAs, bloodies, vamps. i love them all. they are OP as friggg with ammo cheat. i use auto barrel and only shoot it in vats. i name them after "hell on wheels" characters like "Mr. Bohannon." remember that show? i use one on a melee character with no commando cards and it's still pretty OP just running on vats cards and other stuff.

just the looks and the sounds sell me on this rifle, great fun..

As a bloody stealth commando crit build, my Quad 50crit Railway is my best dps gun so far. Using blight soup, small gun bobblehead, guns and bullets 8, overdrive and psychotats, aswell as the necessary perk cards for this build.

i think this is the beast beginers gun, i ve been using it since lvl 30, back then it 1shoted or 2 shoted most enemies at that level without any mods, and about ammo, you wont strugle with it, you wont even craft it. it takes 2 or 3 shoots to kill an regular enemy, and they drop 5 or plus nails, so u get more than you use, and its really heavy, i just dont pick it up anymore, have like 1000. whats really botters me, it breaks so fast, you ll end up backing to your camp more often, to repair it rather than picking ammo from your vault or crafting ammo

Not that I'm promoting the ammo glitch ... cough cough .... but a BE Railway done so, is arguable the best all around weapon in the game.

Just subscribed. Any chance you can do a full health bow build. I have just started using bow in stealth suit getting about 229 damage per short with poison bow. I think my build and perk choices work great together for my build. I think bows with the right mods, good rolls and good perk choices are a lot better than people think. And damn there cost effective on ammo and great in stealth. Also goes well with throwing knives and shringer to soften up really really tough enemies. Still I can kill the ghouls at White springs with a single head shot no problem yet I see stealth auto having to put multiple rounds into them.

Love the automatic piston version... but outside of VATS, the recoil is terrible for constant fire. Use it mainly on the Queen and Earle.

I have a love for the railway and have most of the top iterations of it. The one I like the most is the Quad FFR AP refresh one. It takes everything down quickly including bosses and the AP seems to last forever. I am using an unyielding set though FYI. For full health builds, the +50 vats accuracy is probably better. The one drawback is that for some reason, the crits are kind of sporadic with the railway in my experience. Even so it doesn't matter much, it fires so fast and does so much damage anyways. Quad explosive railway isn't really that noticeable IMO because it does so much damage against regular enemies already and against bosses the explosive effect does little extra damage. IMO the prime receiver is kind of pointless as well. The base damage is already so high that it really isn't that noticeable unless you are timing yourself soloing Earle or something.

And just like that i learn that my Quad 50 Vats Hit Chance Faster Reload is a God Rolls. With the 50s Vats i have the feelings that scorchbeast won't fly away from me.

The problem with the explosive railway is it does such crazy area damage if an enemy is close with an explosive railway you can fry yourself from area damage

I was always getting quad explosives for taking down the queen guess I should've tried them out first before scrapping them 😂

I have to disagree on the opinion that only a quad railway rifle is worth having because 10 rounds is too low. I have great results using Anti-Armor railway rifles. 10 rounds can kill 4 level 100 Super Mutants if you're built for it. The quad is awesome for boss fights but not really necessary for general hunting/exploring/questing. I've had great performance from instigating and furious railway rifles as well.

also, no one can say it. i was just saying "wailway wifle" for a while. after any event, especially now with "loot all," your friends WILL have a bunch of railway spikes for you. i really like crits +50. if you card for a lot of crits, and buff crits, you do a stupid mega shitpile of damage in vats. it takes cards and buffs and snacks and all the stuff, but crits +50 is probably my strongest.

I just got a quad explosive which is great but it keeps dropping vats before the target is dispatched.

Turtle, how's your perk count higher than 50? Has to do with legendary perks?

Regarding ammo, in this game we have almost unlimited steel, so crafting is not a issue at all, as a player without pay to win, i often just drop steel since i have over 100k on my mule. Good for boss since ammo is not a issue at all, only steel = just burn that ammo on queen no problem

Note that you can only scrap one a day I tried scrapping three in a row and just got one attachment

Love Railway. I have a Quad, Faster reload and... somthing else. Always forget but I use it exclusively. Melee that plays with a flamer and railway rifle because they're low cost and OP

Am I doing something wrong because I craft the lowest level of the Railway rifle and I scrap it hoping for a mod unlock and same with some other guns but I don't get any mods unlocked. Accept the normal guns you see like the assault rifle or the double barrel shotgun and when I scrap them, I get mods. So did they remove the craft and scrap for mods on certain guns or what? I genuinely don't know how to get the rest of the mods unlocked
