The west did nothing wrong. World population has exploded because of industrialization, there is more food and more wealth for the entire world. The west ended slavery around the world. The problem is developing nations make too many people and outpace their economic growth. Colonialism, industrialism, brought everything the west had to everyone else. Wasn't for the right reasons but who's histories reflect doing things for the right reasons. The result is a rapid expansion and modernization for all peoples.

My personal feeling on the song is that they're not necessarily critisising the average american, but more their government/big companies and the reach around the world. Wherever you go, you will find it's influence, much as the internet reflects nowadays too by being very american-centered. Like refering to non-american films as foreign, like it's a universal experience that american films are your native films. Keeping in mind when the song was actually released (2004), I think the "sometimes war" was even more pointed than we would interpret it today. The song, in it's entirety, is still relevant today, almost 20 years later, but at the time, the US was actively ramping up their invasion in Iraq. So it makes sense to point at that and go "they export war as well".

This song is about the Americanization that is taken place in most of the world and they are mocking it and making it a parody as they dont approve of that change in the world, its also why you see people of different cultures walking around eating big burgers, american deep pan pizza and big cups of Coca Cola (which is he also mentions in the song) Plus the ignorance of americans who belives that everything is wunderbar in their country and they are living in the best country in the whole world.

Don't be afraid to have a bit of German directness, esp. when you react to Rammstein. ;-) Actually, IF there are Americans hating it, there are probably the same amount of Americans who would totally agree with Rammsteins sarcastic criticism. The American society is VERY divided esp. in the last years. Like half of them think it is the greatest thing since pizza, and the other half thinks it should radically change it's course. So whatever you say, there might be some Americans hating it and others loving it. Some applauding and some being offended. You did a great job to be as diplomatic as we wish politicians were. You are right with the culture war. "Vor Paris steht Mickey Maus" is a reference to war. It is discribing the front lines. Example. "Der Russe steht schon vor Berlin" has the meaning that the Russian Army set the front line already in the edge of Berlin. So Mickey Mouse in front of Paris means that there is a cultural frontline the US put their with Disneyland.

Great one! You nailed the meaning Biss, I just think it's not ONLY a critic to what America forced on the world but also a critic to the rest of the world for embracing a lot of other things that weren't forced : Who doesn't love a Big MaC, Cola and a Hollywood blockbuster? I'm from Portugal an I love it! The song pokes fun at America, but the line "We are all living in America" seems more like a self critic to all non-Americans. We are guilty of it, forced or not, we embraced the good and the bad. Ironically this was a huge hit in America and also in the world but Rammstein don't seem so fond of it, after the tour where they launched it, they don't play it that often live. Oh and yeah, the overall theme of the video is about the moon landing being an hoax produced in a studio in Hollywood. Great reaction!

I think Rammstein is loved by so many people, because if you want to you can dive deep into their lyrics. Offending or blaming is not the aim of this band, but to selfreflect. For example Deutschland was loved and also hated in Germany from the left to the right parties. I think what they like to do is to provoke and make you think about what the lyrics might tell you. But on the other hand, if you do not know the lyrics its fantasic music and of course their stage performances are unbeaten in my opinion. A good example is "Dicke Titten", if you only hear the song without seeing the video its a perfect what I would name "Ballermann-song" / "springbreak-song" but with the lyrics and the video it goes deeper. Songs of Rammstein I would suggest: Dicke Titte, Angst, the piano version of "Mein Herz brennt", Radio, and so on. And to US Americans I don´t think that "America" was intended to offend you, but to give you the oportunity to selfreflect what you are doing and want to do as the "Leader of the western, democratic world".

Hey kids. Gen-X metalhead here. American expatriate of three decades in Germany. No guarantees of useful insight. I think the most important line in the lyrics is _This is not a love song._ They're making that clear 'cause if you know about Bruce Springsteen's _Born in the USA,_ you know americans don't think any song naming America could possibly _not be_ a love song. It's also -a quote from- the title of a song by Public Image Ltd. that featured Johnny Rotten (of Sex Pistols fame), one of America's not favorite english punk artists. Maybe. _Und vor Paris steht Mickey Mouse_ (Mickey Mouse has reached Paris) is the kind of line you'd hear in a report from a war, insinuating that Disney is invading, seeing that Disneyland Paris was newish when this song came out. Rammstein is very much painting a picture of America as a busybody Karen of world-policing, and that they're a little pervasive. If you think you've spotted the lie, then tell us where you _no you didn't._ For good or ill, by hook or by crook, America's somehow become the pilot of Starship Earth, 'cause they may not have all the money, but they have all the stuff the money wants, they have all the cool weapons, and they feel that lends them some level of authority. Like, all my life, I was regaled with legends of how in WWII, the US came to Europe and cleaned house. But after living here long enough, I found out that what really happened was more like we got to Germany, started climbing the _soul-warpingly massive_ mountain of dead soldiers that the russians buried the Wehrmacht under, executing any surviving nazis that didn't know anything about rockets or nuclear reactions, wrapped up the nazi scientists that did in the Stars and Stripes we were going to raise over the Reichstag until we found the russians got it first, and sent all those evil eggheads back to Nevada to build The Bomb. None of that is exactly true, but it kind of is. And Bisscute! The kind of people that _would_ get angry at you about this reaction _are going to_ get angry at you about this reaction. They're angry. The diplomacy you're attempting will do nothing to prevent that, but the rest of us see and acknowledge your peaceful intentions, and appreciate your efforts. Anyway, that's my "Finally, I just subscribed" comment for you.

It is a bit ironic...these guys came from East Berlin and lived under Russian oppression until 1991, and it was Ronald Reagan and America that were huge variables in bringing down the wall and the USSR. What is great is that Rammstein is able to criticize America and the west...I bet they didn't sing many songs criticizing East Germany or the USSR (understanding that they didn't exist at that time...probably wouldn't have been allowed to exist). And I bet they certainly enjoy the US dollars their albums are making. I personally think this is awesome. I have no problem with their criticism of the US, and our 'we are better than you' attitude. That's what the lyrics early on about '...leading' when dancing. The US does have a way of trying to force our beliefs on others around the world, because we think our way is best. I love these guys, and think Til Lindemann is brilliant.

I agree, with most of what you wrote, but I have to say their song and video of "Deutschland" is a very critical view on their love and hate relationship towards their own country. As a Rammstein fan you certainly know, one of my favorite songs from them, "Stein um Stein" It describes in a metaphorical way, how the feeling of "life" was, in former east Germany. Or "Radio", the communist GDR regime could put you in jail , if they caught you, hearing music from the west. That video describes it, in a perfect way! That's Rammstein, they're never afraid to speak about very controversial things! That's the main reason why I love them!

@@romanknetsch1035 yeah, you're exactly right, and it's why I love them as well. They aren't shy, especially Til. I love his side project "Lindemann" as well, because he and Peter Tagtgren are willing to talk about things other bands aren't. They love their freedom of speech, as do I. I don't believe in censorship of any kind, and the more offensive, the better...not necessarily offensive to me, but to society in general. I wish there were more bands like them, and more artists like Til!

@@genekent2391 I am so thankful that there are now US americans, with a healthy, open minded attitude. I was brought up with US american GI'S and a lot of them couldn't stand the slightest critical word against their country. We all know, if we use our brain, that in every country there are some flaws. That's ok, as long as you work on those flaws to make it better. But a lot of US Citizens have a talent to stay blind to their problems. So they see no need to better things. Instead they continue, to pray their mantra, "... THAT WE LIVE IN THE BEST COUNTRY OF THE WORLD..." But YOU, seems to be different, I really appreciate that! It gives me hope! We are living nowadays in a global world. What affects a big country will now affect the whole planet 🌏! We should always work together. I love Lindemanns side project, too! Even more radical, shocking and provoking! 👊

I would not say that this is one of the most hated ones but rather one of the most misinterpreted. The song was Rammstein's response to American intervention in Iraq - a skillfully sarcastic response. Like they said in the lyrics "this is not a love song". America influences the world but from the position of power - cultural power (low-quality mass culture), economic power (corporations) and military power (interventions in other countries, usually when it's profitable for US).

This song was written basically as an indictment of the American government with the war in Iraq. Basically they were basically stating that that war was basically America was looking to "Americanize" the entire world. As an American, I can see their point, and can agree with many aspects of what they're saying.

Early in the song they clearly borrowed from "America" in West Side Story, which gives a 1961 view of racism and classism in the US viewed though a Puerto Rican lens: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ogwR6L43KVw.html Around 2019 I asked on of my classes (mostly 20 or so year old Americans, but also a mix of middle eastern, African, and Asian students) if any of them actually remembered a time that the US was not at war. Nobody said yes. Mostly the criticisms in the song seemed fair, and if Americans are angered by the song I would suggest that they should react with thought and discussion, not simply emotion.

This song is how America spreads its cultural influence on other countries…and I agree, America shouldn’t be doing that. Let other countries, be, let them be who they are, without America pushing their culture on everyone. Im from Texas and am a Native American (Apache/Cherokee/Navajo)….and they forced my grandparents to not speak our languages. I love my country, but its not perfect, but I also cant dwell on the past, I need to move forward, but we as a country shouldn’t be pushing our culture on others. I LOVE Rammstein, and love bands who sing in their native language.

Come on, Biss, don't be shy about the subtext. The guys from Rammstein showed in the video the truth that American narratives dominate everywhere, all over the world, including in the military-political sphere. I understand your embarrassment, in Eastern Europe, Americans are viewed as saviors from communism, and their public criticism is seen as a sign of bad taste and a challenge to the entire post-Soviet system of values. This is understandable. You are very cool, I will continue to enjoy your reactions❤

Sadly America is being made communist, and taking the rest of the Western world with it. Most people are unaware because they don't know that communism, like a virus, evolves itself to better attack a new host. This stuff gets exactly zero traction in Eastern Europe from what I can see, I think you guys instinctively know it for what it is.

As an American, I'm not at all offended by Rammstein giving us a hard time about things. As someone who's read a bit of history, it's not lost on me that there have been millions of people who have immigrated to America from German-speaking nations, and those people went on to help create what has become American culture. The biggest thing to smile about, of course, is their significant use of the Apollo missions in their video, and who was it who was the principal rocket engineer for the program? Wernher Von Braun, a German of V-2 rocket fame, we brought to America after WWII through Operation Paperclip. In this way, they're also making fun of themselves, which shows just how talented they are to have so many different meanings in their art. They are an incredible band, extremely talented, and if they make fun of us for being so culturally influential, it's all good. We know we are. I just hope that more of the positive influences have been embraced than the negative ones.
