this is an amazing video with so many layers in it about society, media, politicians and fear as a way of controlling people. I love the final scene when Till breaks the TV and color comes back. So many things to analyze in it. And the song it is simply spectacular. What a great album they have gifted us. Thanks for the reaction.

Yes the television is destroyed at the end... But at 4:13 we can see that they are blinded by what they see on the internet... Internet is not only the media... Governments are not the only ones to use fear.. even some groups use it by telling us to be afraid of the government they want to control us... Alright... But if fear is the only way these people have to convince us that governments want to govern... It's not convincing... Rammstein criticizes one side as much as the other. The Internet makes people fear their neighbors. and TV makes you fear the internet... It's true that you shouldn't believe everything you see on TV... but it's even more true on the internet... On the internet anyone like you or me can give their opinion.. on the other hand it is possible that we are wrong just as it is possible to be right... Take the example of the song "Armee Der Tristen" the army of the sad. Rammstein "parody" anti-government groups. In this text the character who speaks is a group leader who calls people to be sad with them... [Verse 1] Are you sad like me? Do you have tears running down your face? Come to us and line up We want to be sad together [Verse 2] Why are you still on the sidelines? Join our gang when we march in the dreary Nothing, nothing can happen to you [Chorus] Hand in hand, never alone Hand in hand, don't look back Come on, we'll close our ranks Marching in lockstep against luck [Verse 3] Depressed, sorrowful, broken Should we despair together Depressed and melancholic Pessimistic, diabolical Grounds on faded roses The party of the hopeless Become a member, come in Anyone may be, come in!

For me the part when the guys are building the brick walls is part of the evolution of fear. In the beggining you see them with small wooden fence, sharing and laughing. With fear increasing they surround themselves with the stronger and bigger brick walls adding razor wire and cameras pointing to their neighboors and then buy guns to feel secure. Another interesting part was, at least for me, the use of red colored ethernet wire; in Deutchland video they use something similar to make a refeernce to the red rope legend that joins two people forever; is in this video a metaphor for the internet being the new permanent rope that "unite" us but with fear?
@jonas7758

I think the red wire is a symbol for the media and its power to manipulate us into having fear of something/someone (for example vaccinations or refugees)

The Song ist absolute an Banger. The Song "Angst - (Fear)" is about the fear that is propagated into our minds by media (The scenes with the televisions and the head being dragged in) and by politicians (The scene where Till Lindemann is in front of a standing desk). The fear could be interpreted in different ways, because as they build walls to protect themselves it could be by everyone which is not in our property/countries borders (Fear of migration), and the Lyrics saying "Und so glauben wir bis heute Schwer bewaffnet ist die Meute" (And we believe till today That the people are heavily armed) Could be the reference to the current stocking up of arms due to conflicts, as fear of others. Lastly the scene were all are shooting into the middle and everything is collapsing could mean the destruction caused by this fear. Greetings from Germany :)

Also Till is shown as madman in straitjacket. Putin used fear of "nato invasion" to cover bad situation in Russia and to propagate war in Ukraine, some parents of captured russian soldiers are so brainwashed with propaganda, it seems they even dont care how are their children doing in captivity. Hey there, .. Greetings from germany. First of all, i appreceate a lot what you do, but on this one, you misunderstood that song a bit. its about the fear of black people. these "white people" hear all that bs about black people in tv/internet etc. and they are afraid of them cause they believe that bs... they grew up with that wrong picture... so, being afraid of these people, which come from somewhere else, they build walls (not houses, as you said), protect themselves etc. until they smash their tv's, computers etc, which is kind of the source of this wrong picture, the source of these lies... (at least in that video) and in the moment, they break the source, the colors come back..... (driven by the fear, everything in this video was red, white and black as the old n*zi-flag) and then they realize, these "black people" are normal people aswell and they are also afraid of the "white people"... its against racism and a call to break down these false stories and pre-judices... thats what the visuals and the text are about...

If you're still wondering, what they were eating: chocolate marshmallows. Once these were called "Mohrenköpfe", or more commonly "Negerküsse". Those labels are not, or should not be used anymore, since they're pretty much racist. This also ties in with to be afraid of the "schwarze Mann". Which is also the name of a children's game: Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann ("Who is afraid of the 'black man'?").

As a german, if I may add some context? "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" Is german child's game, where one kid has to catch the others tag-like. The tagger shouts the question and the response by the group is "Niemand!" (no one). The main narrative of the song is imho xenophobia and the "Biedermann" / petty bourgeois attitude of the general public towards anything seemingly threateing to their petty little world view, fueled by those living off these fears. Since around 2015 the EU was confronted by mass emigration, mostly via the Mediterranean Sea. Germany absorbed a lot of them as did many other countries and sadly the media did their share of pushing the fear mongering by the far right and conservatives. This can still be felt today since the emigration issue is still unsolved. TL; DR: Think for yourself, stop being led on by the fearmongering and be a good human towards someone not from your tribe.
@Nick-Scirocco
@Nick-Scirocco 2 года назад
You do realize "the other/schwarzen man" can also be seen as how a left wing person sees a right wing person? Its about building a wall and not talking to and seeing your felllow man while watching your own naritive on your own little screen. Yes you are correct its about that but in my opinion its deeper than just being racist about imigration. If you talk about be good to someone who is not from your tribe i hope you mean all tribes... the world is more complicated than being left wing an judging somebody who is conservative or anti imigration . Im not conservative btw i just think the world isnt black and white. Both sides of the pro or anti imigration have good points in my opinion.

I interpreted this as folks being susceptible to being manipulated to, and fed fear by those in power. In fact, the cheerleaders are even the ones that prop up, a clearly insane, mouth piece to push the message. The TV screens makes for a direct pipeline to the public and it's eaten up. The faces the band makes when they are sitting in the circle around the TV's is really interesting. One moment they are interacting with their neighbors and friendly. Then the cheerleaders who encourage the rhetoric supply the bricks and guns that end up separating And isolating them from each other. But then they see on their own screens images of their neighbors holding weapons, adding to the fear and "justifying" shooting at them. All of this isolation and fear and violence just causes everything to implode. Also, there is something really amusing about seeing 5 grown men crammed on a couch 😅 I really enjoyed your reaction to this.

I'm loving the reactions who are not only appreciating te music but actually enjoying the art and expressing their own opinions. I personally couldn't avoid but feeling that the fear of the black man (Boogeyman) is not only a word play on literal racism and xenophobia, but a lot of symbolism in classist propaganda, the whole walls with security cameras, barbed wire and guns... Yeah if that doesn't ring a bell, maybe you're inside the fence. And also yeah, there's nothing inherently wrong with guns, except for the fact that many, driven by fear and hatred, use them as an excuse to murder people for very specific reasons

It also plays with the similarity to a German kid's play called "who's scared of the black man" (a few years back they started to change it to "white shark", because it can be interpreted as racist). However, I like your take on the boogeyman, because back when I was a kid, I never imagined an actual POC while playing, but a tall faceless figure in a black coat and a big hat or hood. It gives the song a double meaning: Fear makes people xenophobic/racist. And they are scared of a phantom that doesn't really exist.

Rammstein's music videos are always a treat to watch. They always make some whacky, crazy, often over the top music videos but they always serve a purpose. The first watch of this yesterday I hadn't even read the translation for the lyrics but I could tell what Till was saying just by the video. Propaganda, psycopathic leaders, the media poisoning the populations minds and get us to turn against our neighbours. Only given the album a few listens so far but I can't see any weak songs. The riffs are on point. Tills vocals seem to encapsulate everything all the 'styles' hes done over the years. The album really does feel like what you'd get if you mashed every previous album together. Also, boast, I'm going to see these guys in Coventry in June! Sorry, if I sound like a broken record, but you are my favorite reactor. Because you give sophisticated thoughts, that are heartfelt. And you are right. The song itself is about fear and how we are being brought up with it (and this way being controlled?) " Whose is a afraid of the black man/ bogeyman" is a Kid's game that goes back to mideveal times where the plague was called the black death. The video is a masterpiece. It portrays the philistine going to his 9-5 job, barbecue on the weekend, gossiping over the news. Behind the clean facade an abysses of fear and the resulting hatred open up nourished by the media and what we were taught in our childhood. In the outro there's a spicy, provocative detail and every German knows immediately what it's all about. The band eats chocolate foam kisses. I don't know the English term for this candy. Until a few years ago, chocolate foam kisses were still called "Negro kisses" or "moor head". And many of those same philistines were enraged by the name change. I don't know, out of defiance or stupidity, they still call it that. And of course, Rammstein wouldn't be Rammstein if they didn't also express their opinion on Europe's migration policy. Fortress Europe. As always with love from Germany 😎🤘

"Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?" "Who is scared of the black man?" is a children's game in Germany. The black man in this phrase is not referring to people of color, but to the Boogeyman. Yet the connotation of this phrase today is often considered racist. Xenophobia is usually the fear of the unknown, similar to the fear of mythical creatures. That is the duality on which the chorus is built.
@DaLander
@DaLander 2 года назад
I also played the tag game "Wer hat Angst vom schwarzen Mann?" as a child in the schoolyard of my elementary school in Germany back in the '80s. The tagger and the other children stand opposite of each other. The children try to get to the side (maybe a wall) of the tagger without being tagged. The game begins by the tagger shouting: "Wer hat Angst vom schwarzen Mann? (who's afraid of the black man?) -> response: Niemand! (no one!) -> tagger: Und wenn er aber kommt? (what if he comes for you?) -> response: Dann rennen wir davon! (then we run away!) -> then the tagger tries to tag other child while those try to reach the other side. The tagged child is the next tagger. At least that's how I remember playing it back then. As a child I thought of the "schwarze Mann" (black man) as a bogeyman, someone children should be afraid of.

You can interpret this song in a few ways, but regardless, amazing song. And I own a hand gun, it sits in my safe and only used it maybe twice at a range, so I respect firearm ownership if it is, like you said, responsible. But another amazing piece of art and great song from Rammstein. The "breakdown" was sick. September can't come soon enough for the live show.

Rammstein, "Angst" - English Translation of the Lyrics (You) (You) (You) (You) (You) (You) When the children are uneducated The father already has threatened "The Black Man(bogeyman), he'll get you If you don't follow my commandment" And we believe that to this day So scared are the country and its people Something bad will happen The evil comes, won't go anymore [Chorus] And the fear grows into the night Door and gates are guarded The back's wet, the hands clammy Everyone is afraid of thе Black Man (You) In the dark, he sneaks up If you'rе not good, he'll touch you Trust no stranger then So much nightmare, so much craze And so we believe to this day The pack is heavily armed Oh, they can't stop it Scream fire in the alleys And the fear grows into the night Not a wink of sleep at all The back's wet, the hands clammy Everyone is afraid of the Black Man [Post-Chorus] (You) (You) (You) Who is afraid of the Black Man? Who is afraid of the Black Man? Who is afraid of the Black Man? Who is afraid? And the fear grows into the night Not a wink of sleep at all The back's wet, the hands clammy Everyone is afraid (You) (You) Black Man (You) (You) Black Man

I’ve watched this video several times now and every time it gets better. It, and the lyrics, are just so full of symbolism about the relentless spread of the fear of “the other” that is fed to us though our media today, be it social or traditional media. The “Schwartze man” in German means the bogeyman, but at the same time the start and end of the video showing dark skinned refugees encircled by barbed wire also gives it a more literal translation related to the fear spread relentlessly by European media during the refugee crisis a few years ago, which is further reinforced by what they eat in the end of the video - what used to be called a “negerküss”. The way the fear leads to replacing thatched fences with brick walls and cameras to spy on your neighbours, the cheerleaders of fear happy to sell you bricks and guns, the monitors feeding you a steady drip feed of fear… it genuinely smacks you over the head with what is going on all around us.

Hey Norse, great to see another fantastic, true and honest reaction from you to the next Masterpiece from RAMMSTEINs "Zeit" - this one gave me goosebumps all the time, too, it's incredible! You asked what they're eating at the end, I don't know if someone mentioned it here in the comments already, but that are "Dickmann's Foam Kisses"...in Germany, for many, many years, they had a different name, a name that we shall not use anymore - they were called "Negro Kisses"! So, "wer hat Angst vor'm schwarzen Mann"? There are really a LOT of layers here, aren't there? Until next time, keep up the great work, hope to see more from you soon...stay safe, bye!

I really love rammstein because of the emotions.. but i'm really also love the emotions that you show while hearing them. Goosebumps, yes. "Angst" is my favorite from the new album. And your right: it's more about the fear of growing old and dying, than the fear of something that comes from outside or for a Bogeyman.
@thorstenbrandenburg4338
@thorstenbrandenburg4338 2 года назад
Growing old and dying explains, of course, why they have barbed wire, sit in front of a screen, build walls and use guns. And why a group of black people sits inside barbed wire.and why Till smashes the tv…
@blaubeerenwald
@blaubeerenwald 2 года назад
@@thorstenbrandenburg4338 Well, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with age, but with getting fat ass and getting used to living in a western country, in your house with a front yard and knowing that the inner wall, the garden wall and the country border protect you from intruders, Poverty, war, foreign infiltration whatever... The TV or the internet serves as a symbol here of what the world really looks like, but we don't want to see it when it's threatening, so Till throws the stone at the screen. Or do you have another opinion?
@thorstenbrandenburg4338
@thorstenbrandenburg4338 2 года назад
@@blaubeerenwald In my opinion, exactly the opposite. It does not show us the world around us. It shows what people, regardless of their motivation, show us. That is why the people get soaked into the screen at one point, that is what the bogey man tells them, creating fear. And they people outside, with a fence around them, see how they are feared.
@blaubeerenwald

@@thorstenbrandenburg4338 Hmm I don't know why the opposite? The Screen: A symbol of what the world looks like, or a mirror from the inside. Isn't that the same thing? Everything is a mirror. All enemy images are also inside us.

@thorstenbrandenburg4338 2 года назад
@@blaubeerenwald yeah, exactly. We see the world as it is shown to us not as we would see it our own eyes. Fears, the German „Angst“ is imposed on us by the world as the media, social media and others show it to us. So we live in fears. Best shown by the black people behind the barbed wire, watching us fear them on their mobile phones. We fear without having to much of a reason to fear. We are raised in fear. The beginning of the song tells us the story: if you don’t follow my commandments, black man will get you. A fear imposed on the children. And we continue with this.

Just my two cents, which we all will never know the exact meaning from Rammstein. The scene of the brick building, buying guns and cameras, they all watch the tv, which can be simulated of the news outlets (right vs left). The opposing party shoots at the tv on which they disagree on... which brings down everyone. This video/track is spot-on, the meaning is so deep, especially here in the US. Again, just my view.

In the german "Grunschule" age from 6-10) there s the game i still played One guy stands at one side of the sport hall. the rest, abou 25 kids for example on the other side. the guy asks "Who s afraid of black man?" all on the other side."No one, No one" the guy: "and when he comes???" crowd: "then we run" so they all have to overlist him and get away from him without he touches tand get on the other side of the hall to win. when he gets you u ve lost-and get down.so everyone does it and in the and the winner is who didn t catch by the black man.. today all parents are crying and say no, that s crazy..lets make a group "of idiots" : not playing cowboy and indianer, look at the history.. three month later the parents ask after ballerman party; hey, can you please make a group with stopping me naked singing; Komm hol das Lasso raus wir spielen Cowboy und Indianer.. Ok, sure, a bit, only a bit;) out of context, these parents with that double moral ( , F..you) Völkerball is the same as war....sure in your brain.... in America, sorry you ve got to do sth against RFA, what will never work, so far at all... like here ll never happens sth against for buying a wodka for the last 5 euros when they will win anyway..;) ok, have a good night

I'm absolutely against having a gun as a civilist. I'm not saying that you are not responsible with how you use weapons, or that you would ever use them against someone else out of pure idiocy, but my point is that weapons themself are deeply immoral. It's the exact same with nuclear weapons, it doesn't matter who has them and who not, the weapons themself are the problem. As long as there is a device on this planet that can kill someone else with the push of a button, there will be individuals that use this power to enforce their will. Imagine there are not guns in this world, the only way of hurting someone else is tear gas or sheer numbers. The moral population regulates itself, there will always be idiots, but they can't cause harm without weapons that kill someone. No war, no suppression, just moralistic groups of people that exclude the ones that doesn't want to live a righteous life

They're eating whipping cream on a thin waffle, covered in chocolate. These were originally called "Negerkuss" (negro's kiss), but the name is understandably frowned upon, and these days, they're named differently. I'm not sure what, I left Germany a decade ago. The Bogeyman is called "Schwarzer Mann" (black man) in German, so they close the circle here with a nudge at the double meaning, pointing at fear of things like immigration etc. The red cables also have multiple meanings. For one, red is a colour that symbolises fear, but there's also the "red thread", the connective tissue, that you can see in other videos, as well, like in Deutschland.

I actually don’t interpret the scenes with the firearms so literally, though you could. Once they had their fortresses built (brick laying complete), it was almost like they then had their screens and keyboards from which to hurl their attacks and insults to others who dared to take a different stand on something (symbolizing keyboard warriors/comments sections). The overarching takeaway for me generally was that we are all expected to fall in line, think the same way, aspire to the same things, and listen to an inept figurehead who elitists prop up and speak through. It was a heavy video. Appreciate the take and was just as blown away.

Hi, I just wanna leave a comment about my thoughts about this song and video. :) In Germany there is the folklore of the "schwarzer Mann" or "black man" that is a personification of evil or bad. And it is told children that won't listen to their parents that the schwarze Mann will come and take them or in the lyrics "touch them". That Till is in the restraining jacket infront of a lectern with a microphone is for me a symbolisation of a "crazy" person that drives other people that listen to them crazy and into fear like himself. The two women or girls in the circle of barbed wire kinda remembered me of refugees in a camp which are feared by some people. In that case the "crazy person" at the lectern might say things like "they bring violence" or "they're taking our jobs". The men in the circle symbolize something similar to me. They are neighbors that are getting paranoid because of their computer or the internet. They build walls and install cameras and finally getting weapons to protect themselves from the "bad", the "evil" that is being forcasted by the "crazy Person". Finally they attack the guy in the computer and each other and bring themselves to the evil and becoming a part of it. I might have overthought this a little bit and probably made a few grammatical mistakes (pls tell me if you found them). I hope you can understand what I wrote in this comment and pls tell me if you didn't understand anything, I might be able to try to write it a bit different :)
