@kommisar 1. Scandinavia enacts more public spending than private spending. That's majority socialist in my opinion. Regardless of the existence of markets, "production" must be defined to include all services, so to me it's pretty clear. 2. "Democratic" socialism is the best possible system as opposed to market driven economics, precisely because it responds to the priorities of the people as opposed to ever-increasingly the richest people as capitalism does. If you don't believe me, consider this scenario: if you and me were the last 2 people on earth and I owned your only means to get water, I could get you to build more water wells for me in exchange for me barely giving you enough water to keep you alive. This would be a "free market" exchange, whereas the democratic socialist exchange would give us both an equal seat at the table

@kommisar OK definitely a RU-vid bug. Here's the post content repeated: Wow you just made the argument that people in a "socialist" country would "over-consume" the products which therefore run out so they can't have more. And that in a capitalist society, consumption is "regulated" by price - which means not everybody is getting the quantity they want anyway. This is a hilarious angle from which to argue your point, as a (democratic) socialist society could trivially solve that by just setting the price as deemed needed, so you're really not making a relevant argument. My point about Scandinavia is that since more money is spent publicly than privately, those services would otherwise have been provided privately and hence been part of the "capitalistic" system, hence why I said those countries are "more" socialistic than capitalistic. Your argument seems to be that if there is even 1% capitalistic trade, then suddently it can't be called socialistic. The main point I want to make, however, is that democratic socialism as a concept is vasty different than soviet style dictatorship, perhaps to an even greater extent than it is different from capitalism. Yes, the means of production would be directly in the people's hands (through voting / polling) as opposed to in "private" hands as it is with capitalism. BUT, capitalism allows weaponized poverty as a method of labor extortion from the poor by the richer in the society, leading to an ever increasing dictatorship by the richest, not a system that responds to the priorities of the people as a whole, as democratic socialism would.

Its a complete conflict of interest, and the amount of media push back thats its taken just to try to undue some of the damage that Fox News Propaganda has done has resulted in all these other stations leaning further left to try to maintain balance and now we've ended up with no legitimate news all together from no one.

The argument of "corruption" is a bad argument since corruption increases as the presence of the State increases, specially over the long term. Why is it that Colombia isn't as poor as Venezuela even if they have massive corruption problems? The private sector has very effective mechanisms to filter corruption, and if discovered, there's a bigger probability for accountability than in the government. Most cases of corruption at a big corporate scale require government involvement (Enron and Teranos are prime examples). The same goes with FTX. The free market and competition are great at taking advantage of inefficient competitors. Corruption reduces efficiency, that's why in the private sector is very difficult to sustain a corrupt system over the long run. Also socialism relies on force, so they have the monopoly of force and therefore the 2 scenarios aren't even comparable.

That it occurs shortly after the transition of power is an unfortunate coincidence. I don't know the specifics of insurance but I do know that when my mother's coverage lapsed and she petitioned for new coverage and federal financial aid due to unexpected and steep expenses. She was denied (pre-existing conditions). Being unable to work in her condition she passed away because she couldn't afford treatment. Again, that it happened shortly after this transition, is again, an unfortunate coincidence. He may not have been a cause of this bad turn of events but he didn't fight the problems regarding healthcare or immigration. These problems are far reaching and take time to fix. I get that. But he has done little to show that it matters to him. When you run for president your focus has to be the majority, not your own agenda. This man, in my eyes, cannot see things that way and will not act to improve the aforementioned issues unless it benefits him.

Its simple. If you look at history and statistics 90% of countries where socialism came to power there was some kind of genocide or mass slaughter followed by oppression. You have the small elite in power that have all the privilage. Its corrupt by nature. Standard of living for those countries that became socialist went down considerably even for the working class. Capitalism is a free market playing on the same playing field, or as good as. That promotes competition and progress. Monopolies or back door dealings among competitors destroy the free markets and the playing field, along with overregulation of businesses. This why its crony. Why you have anti trust laws. Government is ment only to create a level fair playing. More than that is crony capitalism. Thats the idea behind it all.

@@walkinondamoon1 Well no, Socialism itself isn't the reason why there are genocides and mass slaughters, though it does have a flaw that allows it to be easily abused like that, rather the reason there is genocides and mass slaughters is because socialism is usually established by people who were angry at capitalism, so angry they were prone to violence and accept it widespread, it's a "revolution" after all. Communism's color is red because of the bloodshed of the revolutionary struggle! And of course, people prone to violence are also prone to corruption which makes the flaw that allows it inevitably taken advantage of quickly. The problem with Capitalism is it's focus purely on money makes wealth gaps and poverty inevitable and undealt with, leading to unrest and often revolutions. The economy needs to evolve once more, for example GDP has long been said to not reflect social well-being, I like the ideas of Andrew Yang who proposes a new index that promotes human wellbeing: www.yang2020.com/policies/human-capitalism/ "Capitalism as an economic system has led to unparalleled innovation and improvement in the human condition. Many consider it to have “won” the war of ideas against socialism, but that simplistic view ignores that there is no such thing as a pure Capitalist system. And our current version of institutional capitalism and corporatism is a relatively recent development. Our current emphasis on corporate profits isn’t working for the vast majority of Americans. (...)The focus of our economy should be to maximize human welfare. Sometimes this aligns with a purely capitalist approach, where different entities compete for the best ideas. But there are plenty of times when a capitalist system leads to suboptimal outcomes. Think of an airline refusing to honor your ticket because they can get more money from a customer who purchases last-minute, or a pharmaceutical company charging extortionate rates for a life-saving drug because the customers are desperate."

Not really. The United States has gone through periods with far less industry capture of gov't than we have today. Largely because the scope of gov't power under the constitution was read far more narrowly by the supreme court until the 1930s. If there is less power in gov't, then there is less power for private interests to buy. Capitalist systems require a restricted gov't of predictable laws to function. But socialist systems by nature concentrate decision making power. If the state owns the means of production then it's a state apparatus that will decide how many shoes to manufacture, for example. Since without prices it's impossible to know how many shoes the population needs, it will come down to a political policy. Putting this much power in government will ALWAYS result in the concentration of power with the final decision maker. i.e. rule by the decision maker and his oligarchic administrators. In a future where technology is advanced enough for factories to be able to modularly change production from a good to another very quickly, then it may be possible for a socialist system of voting for production levels to work at the level of a city state perhaps - so long as that city state generates enough aggregate wealth by exporting a lot of professional services or perhaps oil & minerals. And so long as there is a system of incentives that allow people to excel. And so long as many goods are shipped in from freer polities surrounding this theoretical socialist city state. But in large polities it will never be practical or wise to aggregate millions - or hundreds of millions - of people and their wants and needs in to the decision making authority of a state leader. Note: a robust welfare state does not socialism make. Socialism means state ownership of the means of production.

That's something I wish Trevor countered with. It's the "no True Scotsman" fallacy, and it's used to dismiss any counterargument... but it's a logical fallacy and it should've been pointed out as such. He did the same thing with Norway, saying "it's not *real* socialism". The ironic thing is that the kind of "real" socialism he's claiming is so bad isn't the kind of socialism that anybody in the States wants. Nobody wants govt-owned property or businesses, but they do want an increased percentage of the federal budget to be spent on the people... health care, maternity care, education, etc. Every country on Earth is more socialist than we are in the USA. Every country in the world except us has paid maternity leave provided by the govt. Every country in the world has cheaper education and health care... and it's no wonder why.

I think his idea is that if the government uses power to provide to a certain group, that isnt real capitalism since it removes the power the power has to improve the system with variety of options. So if the market works bad and that happens without intervention from the government, that would be the example of capitalism not working correctly. But in socialism people willingly gives the power to the government to manage several aspects, therefore the bad implementation by the chosen government cannot be called non socialism. The similar example for socialism would be if a government claiming to be socialist sell off their healthcare system to private industry and the private industry messes it up, in that case you could claim that government isn't a real socialist government.

But they're not stable. An unequal distribution of power has a natural tendency towards an even more unequal distribution of power. The tendency towards monopoly. And monopolies are not free markets. Furthermore, markets can handle novel ideas in only two ways: ignore it or commoditize it. You need the force of government to prevent the markets from commoditizing those things we want it to ignore, and you need the force of government to keep the markets from monopolizing. A great example of markets commoditizing things we want it to ignore is money in politics, soft corruption, and buying elections. An example of markets ignoring things we wish it would commoditize is externalized costs such as pollution and climate change. Furthermore, some industries are inherently un-free. Markets with network effects like social media and Facebook, and markets with adversarial effects like healthcare. When markets inevitably move towards being less free, you need a government stronger than any single market actor to force it back into its appropriate lane. There's nothing magical about markets where they naturally serve human interests. We have to work hard and remain ever vigilant to keep the market serving humans rather than having humans serving the market.

Non-interventionism, is a principled stand, in my opinion. I apposed to all forms of intervention, military, or economic. But to abandon, our ally, the Kurds. Is leading them to be exterminated by Turkey. He says, you can't wage war, with however many small amount we had there. But in reality, we're not waging war now, and to maintain a presence, would have made the Turkish incursion into Rojava impossible. Plus, the administration, and as far as I know, conservatives haven't been voicing outrage or using diplomatic means to end the Aggression. --- To defend withdrawal, on the basis on non-interventionism, is disingenuous.

Jeffrey Johnson cool story. Never said that. Do you assume everything or just like to gamble on what people are thinking.

Both sides do use foreign countries to manipulate domestic policies. Like the Biden administrations attempts to create a standard global tax on corporations.
