I don't know why 'Flametongue Kavu' is just a quintessential Magic the Gathering card. Feels as iconic to me as Serra Angel.

FTK shows some interesting design sensibilities that evolved over the years. Nowadays it'd say "up to one target" or "target creature an opponent controls" because of the unfortunate result of playing the Kavu on an empty board.

The dude really does have good aim.

When I was taught how to play, a friend lent me a red/green deck, with some elves, dragons and good old flametongue. I remember being impressed with the illustration and the flavor text. I also remember getting crushed by my friend who was using a mono black deck mainly because interpreted his drudge skeletons' "regeneration" ability as "you can cast this card from the graveyard." Because it makes sense that the skeleton would rebuild itself from a pile of bones. Anyways, I run Flametongue Kavu in my Henzie deck, mainly for the nostalgia, but blitzing it, removing a value creature and then recurring to do it again it's cool

The power of Flametongue Kavu comes from being a twofer. 4 damage ETB usually means killing something that costs 4+ mana. Then your opponent has to get rid of it, because 4 damage is substantial, so it typically takes a second card with it. Even if that card is only 1 mana, it still takes them more resources to remove it

Shout out to that guy, one of my favorite guys to splash into Red Commander decks.

Turns out Flametongue Kavu is like the perfect power level benchmark in my battle box. It pretty much always feels good but never backbreaking. Meanwhile I had Flametongue Yearling in there for a while but it had to get the boot for just feeling absolutely oppressive.

It wasn't just Serra Angel that was pushed out of the format by FTK, but also Lightning Angel. FTK is still worth running in the vintage cube.

Flametongue Kavu also still holds up pretty well in formats like Commander. 4 damage is enough to shoot a MASSIVE array of commanders in the format, and getting a 4/2 body out of a removal spell also ain't bad. It's not turbo amazing or anything, but if you're a red deck that cares about having board presence and you want some critters with removal stapled on, Ol' Reliable Flametongue Kavu is there for ya.

They called it the FTK test. If it couldn't survive an FTK you wouldn't play it at all.

FTK is a powerhouse of a creature that can only be played around by not playing any creatures (that can be targeted by ftk). Unfortunately that meant having nothing on board to block the rest of the deck.

No mention of the abbreviation of FTK? When I first heard people refer to the card as FTK, I was horribly confused. "Sure the card is good, but I don't see how it's a first turn kill"
