I love you guys so much, and huge respect to dusty when he googles to look at a mon and is willing to change his mind, so many people are too stuck in a hate spiral for certain mons but you guys are willing to learn and change your minds. Same for me, I usually divide the 9 generations in 3 tier and this is on the bottom one with the two following it. Main reason is the recurring theme of mons being fiercer than their previous counterparts in order to be seen as combat-ready, which I don't like at all, add that the color choices are often subpar and gimmick mons are almost all lackluster (the ghosts the exceptions) and you get why.

I think Gen 4 aged mostly VERY well Garchomp, Lucario, Luxray, Staraptor, Infernape, Honchkrow, Gliscor, Mamoswine, Electivire, Yanmega - all these and more are 100% top-tier designs with some of the most iconic of all times among them (Garch, Luke) loses points for Lickilicky and too many legendaries + some of their designs arguably too over-the-top (Palkia)

I'm similar to you, Dusty. I fell off of Pokemon games with Diamond Version. I felt like the "formula" was kinda repetitive at the time, and I found Diamond Version kinda boring. I also got it like a year late, during my first year of college, and I was... distracted by college stuff lol. But I got back into the games with X and Y (I was excited for the 3D models).

Similar to you Dusty, I started losing interest in Pokémon as a whole at the beginning of Gen 4 and had a resurgence at the end when HG SS came out. My take away was that even though the games are fun, outside the obvious choices and past Gen evolutions, Gen 4 Pokémon leave so much to be desired for me. When Gen 5 game out I remember defending it hard because I thought it was a step up overall.

You say you're all just judging the design but it would be more interesting if we heard ranks based on lore, competitive, personal opinion, and design.

I can't lie, you guys are off on this gen. I wish we could have got each of your solo votes to see who is more on par with my opinions. Biggest flops were Kricketune not being in F straight up for that mustache, Cranidos should have been S, Rampardos should have been F for lack of intimidating design for an evolution into a mon that has an outrageous attack stat to end up so flat is disappointing, Buizel should have went S for how well its name works with its design while also not being overdesigned by forcing another type on it, Floatzel and Burmy probably should have been F cause there is no way that fat evolved otter with no legs ends up as fast and powerful as its stats say it is and I just think Burmy is boring AF, and all the starters honestly get B and above from me. Cherrim is what hoppip should have been even though that evo line wouldn't make as much sense, hoppip just sucks. But yes Ambipom is a major design fail. Hot take, Lucario is a low C tier for me because of its ears and Drapion is probably an F because why the F are its arms coming out of its face?! It has a long neck already so why make it weird and stupid looking when it could have been realistic instead of uncanny and forehead smackablesque?! I never use drapion because of how effing dumb that design desision was. Fix the ears on Lucario so they are less, long erect ball sack shape into literally anything else and it'd probably be S.

I agree with Soul SOO MUUCH on Gen 4 having the second worst set of starters! I think the only starter I trully like and not just respect is the meme generating GF's baby Charizard. But if it wasn't the meme it is, maybe I wouldn't appreciate it nearly as much. I would still kinda like it for being strong in Gen 3 and Gen 8.

Came here expecting to get mad as a Sinnoh fan and left wanting to train a Mon I've pretty much never paid any attention to before. I guess I never realized due to the franchise itself never really doing anything to highlight its qualities but you're totally right about Mothim, it does have a striking face, and the wings looking like they're attached with a band is great.

I'm confident I'm alone in this, but as a creature designer, I think ALL BUT Bronzor/Bronzong, Stunky/Skuntank, Leafeon & Glaceon belong in F tier... they belong in like maybe D or C tier, but that's it. No B, A, or S tier for me when it comes to gen 4.
