0:25. I said that like it was a personality quirk and not something that Joe has been suffering with for years. I'm sorry for that. I should have done more research instead of trying to be silly about something this serious. I know I can't do anything to undo that, but here are some research and donation links to organizations dedicated to the research of this debilitating mental illness. Joe Hawley Joe Hawley features all five members of TH. Also, it’s not that their passion fizzled out, it’s that they didn’t have the success to do it as a job. All five members remain good friends and work other jobs. Now that they’ve blown up, I can see them coming back. And coming back, and coming back, and coming.
14:38 i have always seen banana man as a silly song. like marvin said: “wouldn’t the world be better off if we took nonsense more seriously?” suggesting the whole album is nonsense
I think Marvin was saying that a lot of things referred to as nonsense are actually just misunderstood. Hawaii Part II is largely nonsensical lyrically, but those weird lyrics all make total sense with the right perspective. Nothing encapsulates this more than Go to Bed from Joe Hawley Joe Hawley. What sounds like sweet nonsense about bedtime is seemingly about hypnosis-induced group suicide.
@@ShenDoodles that’s another way to interpret it. i’m not saying i disagree. we’re probably both right. tally hall in reality is far too complex for one person to truly understand, and i think that’s the point. some is nonsense, some is really dark. there’s truly no way to tell.
Random Fact: In The Whole World and You, the reason why the lyrics say "Sharing *sotries*" instead of "Sharing stories" is because Andrew kept on misspelling the word stories, so he just went with sotries.
5:02 Labyrinth is the only song on Hawaii Pt. II where Joe isn't credited with the lyrics at all (unless you count Candle on the Water). The lyrics were done by the 2 vocalists (Charlene Kaye and Shane Maux Page).
In terms of complexity and sheer music theory, TME would take the dub for me personally. The way it combines electronic music with baroque techniques (yes, really) is borderline cathartic. In terms of, y‘know, actually being able to listen to the song normally, I agree that Sea Major is the better choice here.
I like the psychodelic theme of the mind electric because i had a chaotic mind as a kid bc i was very imaginative and was hard to control my flow of thoughts So i can relate with the mashed thoughts the mind electric describes
10:58 I alwayd thought the time machine was just a boat, and the narrator has gone insane, due to the electro shock therapy , so he thinks its a time machine, but thats just my interpretation
My two favorites are definitely "Taken for a Ride" and "Never meant to know". I love the way they both sound and how the beat comes in. Also the when the beat switches in "Taken for a Ride" is beautiful. I gotta say though, & isn't really up there on my favorites, at least the main part isn't. I really like the beat switch at the end though, good for drumming.
Aight I'm gonna go out on a limb, and attempt to defend the lines in Labyrinth you called out lol. So Labyrinth as an entire song, following The Mind Electric, represents a descent into insanity, right? The person involved is lost in a mass of hallucinations and lost in circles of their own thoughts. So in this state of hallucinations, it makes sense that people who were significant in this person's life would repeatedly show up, right? So him talking about his "ex-girl" and "next girl" is a way of showing the scattered thoughts and experiences of this person as their mental state devolves. Just my own interpretation though, and I can certainly understand why you don't like those lines lmao. This was a really fun and well put together video though. Whether I agreed with you takes or not, I can appreciate the reasoning you used for everything. And I think we can both agree that The Mind Electric is a goddamn masterpiece
My thoughts were that it was more of a reflection on all the pointless things we focus on throughout our life, due to how the song references things like a constant fear of failure, girls etc. I think that this is all brought into context when right after in time machine he reflects on all the time he has wasted and wants to live things back again with what he knows now
4:38 Fun fact: there is a song that samples both Hymn for a Scarecrow and Sleepwalk. It's Joe's cover of Since I Don't Have You, although I can't personally can't find which part of HfaS is sampled (it's probably a drum stem, like Go to Bed did with Sacred Beast) the description does say that it's sampled.
I only just became a Tally Hall superfan not long ago and I had ZERO idea Hawaii Part II was even a thing... So... thanks for that:) Also fantastic video, hope more people see it!! Prayers to the algorithm, for it has blessed me! (Update: I have just finished listening to Hawaii: Part II for the first time... wow. yeah that was pretty fucking good. Absolutely not debating Dream Sweet In Sea Major isn't the best Tall Hall song, I see the truth now. Also just realized how poetic it is that you ranked just 'Dream' as the worst song but 'Dream' Sweet In Sea Major is the absolute best... then again, just like Tally Hall itself...could just be a good silly little nothing:)
I found Miracle Musical before I found Tally Hall. There was a thee-year gap, and I only listened to Labyrinth. 3 years later, I find the Ruler of Everything meme, become addicted to Tally Hall, find out Miracle Musical is the sister group, start listening to Miracle Musical. Listen to Labyrinth for the first time. Wait! That was the song I loved 3 years ago!
I actually found out about ruler of everything first, but didn't check out tally hall. Then I discovered HPII, and got real interested, and that's how I discovered tally hall.
God i have no idea how can there be tiers or whatever i mean wth ALSO THE LINE "IT FEELS LIKE FLYNG, BUT MAYBE, WERE DYING" IS MAKING ME CRY LIKE A CHILD
So happy to see Never Meant To Know so high, it’s one of my absolute favorites for how beautiful it is. It absolutely touches my soul. Wonderful list!!!
Also, I too am pretty sure I heard Greener on the radio long before I knew what TH was, but what is weird is the only radio station I know that openly plays TH is Tree Town sound in Michigan, and I have never set foot there, maybe radio stations sometimes play greener because it’s the least “strange” Tally hall song?
How have I not found your channel till now. Besides your underrated quality tintin is one of the best stop motion movies ever made. My favorite movie as a kid
5:23 Yeah that's because simon has dementia bc of what happens in the mind electric He thinks his girlfriend is still alive but left him, gag that continues in time machine Fun fact, in time machine simon has a lucid moment when he starts repeating "having time alone" and his imaginary time machine breaks down for some seconds But it doesnt stay that way and goes back to the dementia state
imma be fr, spring and a storm is my favorite tally hall song, and my interpretation is about 50x more positive than most people, I think its about finding good in the bad, but still being truthful that bad things do indeed happen, and not every bomb has a silver lining(i know). cudos to who can guess the song reference
For the people saying "be born is a country song"you are wrong. Country is about the sound, but more importantly about the lyrics. These lyrics are no where near country. Also, you would never EVER hear a song like be born on country radio, or the radio in general (I grew up listening to country so I know a lot abt it XD)
Well, that took an interesting turn. Ah, well I appreciate your efforts in this ranking. You made some great points, and it's always fun to see others' perspective on stuff like this. Also bonus points for the Never Meant to Know appreciation
13:41 This is exactly how I got into Tally Hall! I thought my dad played Marvin's Magical Mechanical Meuseum and even recognized the album cover, but none of the songs were saved on his Spotify playlist, and he never listened to it before. Tally Hall is the kind of band that gives you dementia and deja vu, but you don't mind
sea major is great, but it feels like it’s attached to a bonus track which for me doesn’t necessarily change where i’d put the song on a list, but still alters my overall view of the track
They haven’t been officially released in digital formats under the Atlantic records label. Also every song on those that was released later on has (demo) in the title. Don’t worry, a ranking of the quote unquote “unreleased” Tally hall songs is coming.
That trigger warning SHOOK ME TO MY CORE. I was NOT expecting that😞😞 anyways, I adore tally hall. I’ve fixated overly since about the start of this (awful.) year, and the lore honestly brings me to tears. AND WHEN WERE THESE SONGS SO DARK🙁??Anyways this band is my whole life.
I don’t know what magic this video has in it but I was shaking from happiness at one point and crying at another because while watching it. Maybe it’s just because it’s tally hall but what the hell. Thank you for this video, honestly you talking about all these made me smile a lot, thank you. i know this comment is weird as shit, idk what i’m doing
my favorite song by tally hall is definitely &. in my head nothing will beat it and i never thought of it being called ampersand until now edit: new favs are two wuv, cannibal, and hymn for a scarecrow. your hymn for a scarecrow ranking is horrendous but overall good ranking
Bro for some reason up until now, I always read “Introduction to the snow” as “introduction to the show”, so when you said the title I screamed “WAIT WHAT?!”
@@p1xelat3d At least in my opinion it sounds awful… just not at all enjoyable to listen to. It and mucka blucka are the only ones I skip on MMMM, and I only skip mucka blucka because it’s far too long for the silly joke song it is lol.
this video is really good, I think you ranked the songs in a fair way. although I feel that some songs should've been higher or lower on the list, I don't really care. this video was well-written and the editing was not too bad either. unfortunately you forgot the ballad of nathan naimark, but that's only one song. great video!
@@Robbity oh, I understand now, thanks for the clarification! either way, I can tell that you put a lot of effort into your videos, and I appreciate that. you've earned yourself another sub! keep up the awesome work :D
Fun fact, Mucka Blucka has been my morning alarm ever since this school year has started. For that reason, it is the worst tally hall song to me. please help.
Personally spring in a storm is my favorite and still is after watching this but this video made me relisten to some songs and it changed up quite a few ones on the top
0:49 you have a great music taste, my favorite bands/artists are AJR, bill wurtz, tally hall, 100 gecs, and drive45 you are a fan of 3/5 of them, and drive45 is very obscure and not many people know about him, so basically 3/4
i used to like AJR and i still think they have some great songs (some of my favorites being deadly underrated),, and then they started releasing just okay singles, then the DJ one just...
im glad to see hymn for a scarecrow get some love after your decision change. i also initially shared the opinion that it overstayed its welcome, but after giving it a few listens, i really enjoy how the song lets you settle into the existential crisis the song brings
I don’t think the meaning behind banana man is a mystery; the song was a playful homage to Harry-Belafonte-style Calypso music, and the most famous song from that genre to American ears is Dayo, a song about working in a banana field. I think they just started from there and then riffed a bit until it became what it is
