And for some reason, I trust his judgement. If I were going to get a burger right now, I’d go by his recommendations. Seems like he knows what he’s talking about.
True story: After every childbirth, my mother demanded a Whataburger. Don't send flowers or baby gifts to the hospital. Send a Whataburger. Fries were optional. Woman lived to be 87. I miss you Momma! I continued the tradition. The only hitch was when The Hubs decided to hide a diamond necklace in one, but I forgave him for that one because he brought a backup Whataburger with onion rings. Good thinking ahead.
Krystal is one of those things that every couple months you get a craving for (if you have had it before) you eat you enjoy it while eating it but then later you regret it and you go another couple months without it until the craving hits you again.
Ga Me I have never had a bad Frisco Burger from Hardee’s and I want to say they are the only burger remaining from the thick burger debut in the early 2000’s. Everything else is a toss up.
I worked at a Wendy's during my college years. Their food was really good back then, but they've really slid since. Still love their spicy chicken sandwich, though.
Having been a manager at McDonald's, the special sauce I can tell you is egg salad minus the chicks of egg. It comes in a big bag and the ingredients are listed on the side and it's legitimately everything you need to make a mustard based egg salad
I had a friend who worked at Wendy’s a long time ago when he was in high school. Fast forward many years ahead and his daughter now works at Wendy’s. He said one of the big differences between then and now is Wendy’s uses less salt on their burgers now. So, the old, good-tasting burgers from Wendy’s was based on tons of salt.
@@angelmaden1559 their breakfast biscuits are literally sickening. Like, vomit inducing with how they refuse to sit right in the gut. Their burgers have been pretty good in my experience.
Inside info, several places no longer have TV's because they don't want the coffee crowd in the morning. The coffee crowd is nothing but trouble, they order a "senior" coffee and complain about station and volume of TV.
I actually like their burgers, better than Mcdonalds and Wendys and BK, none of the rest I can really get that easily. I feel at least where I am that its a upper quality fast food thing. Then again I don't get the basic burger..
I was getting my car worked on at a dealership last summer, and it was taking forever. I saw a Burger King down the street and took off. I walked up, and the restaurant itself was COVID closed (STILL?) and it literally looked like the set of the Walking Dead inside. There was someone working in there, and he motioned me around to the drive-thru. I thought these places were not supposed to take walk-ups at the drive thru, so I was apprehensive. Anyhoo, I walked up and they guy opened the window. The smell that rolled out like a fog of death was pretty close to what I imagine TWD would smell like. However, I was starving, and there was nothing else around except an even sketchier taco shack across the street. Choking back my smell-induced nausea, I ordered a Whopper. Long story short, it did not disappoint! There are no Whataburgers anywhere near me, so I can't speak with experience there, but in this bunch, the Whopper kicks the ass of all the others. Fight me.
Krystal will always hold a place in my heart. Been eating them since I was little. Wanted em as soon as we got em. But they were still too hot so my parents had to hold em in front of the ac to cool them enough for me to eat lol.
Right?! It almost like it is corporate policy. The one in my small town is by far the most popular fast food spot and is pretty good. But even with that, it is a total crap shoot. Sometimes your frito pie is 90% fritos, 7% cheese, and a measly 3% chili. And your Cherry limeade has no cherries in it at all. Then you go the next time and your frito pie is absolutely HOOKED UP and is a meal all by itself. And they graciously gave you 6 to 8 cherries in your limeade.
I have a question. why do the mozzarella sticks taste like vanilla? is it something with the batter? or do you guys fry all the sweet and savory stuff together so it makes everything taste sweet? the onion rings and pretzels taste like vanilla too to me.
@@noellewall8856 as an AM, there is vanilla in the onion ring batter, and the grease is changed daily (at my branch), which is probably why, cuz pretzels absorb a lot
Totally underrated or even unknown fast food sandwich that beats them all is the Culver’s Walleye sandwich. It only comes out during a 2-3 month period every year but is unrivaled in its flaky deliciousness
I actually agree for the most part with the rankings with the exception of Krystal's. Now if you enjoy lettuce on your burger, I almost always ask Burger King to put extra lettuce on my whopper it makes a huge difference to me in the flavor of the overall experience. When I was based in Georgia while in the military, WhataBurger was outstanding.
Heh, back in the day when I made them, about 40 years ago, the secret sauce recipe was 3 parts mayo, 1 part ketchup, 1 part dill relish. Still make it to that spec today on my own burger cook-outs. It was always the highlight of working at McD's when we had a new hire and our supervisor would call them to the back room and tell them they were going to learn how to make the "secret sauce". Their eyes would light up like they were going to be shown the Holy Grail, then afterwards, when they walked back up to the front the look on their face was always like they just discovered Santa isn't real.
Hey thanks, I've been wanting to know what was in that sauce for years. Now, any chance you could tell me the recipe for the breakfast sauce that goes on the Bagel?
I have a friend who's good friends with the original Whataburger founding family. They are genuinely really nice people so I'm glad there's so much Whataburger love here. Sadly, I live in Canada, have not been to Texas and have never had a WB. Their menu looks good though.
@@Herozonex200 They opened in 1932 but never spread out as far as places like McDonalds and BK. They make those small slider burgers like White Castle does.
I live in Wilmington, NC and my favorite burger is by far Five Guys. Second is the Whopper. FG is fantastic and they use whole lettuce and they have A1 sauce and long pickle strips. No matter which franchise you visit; here, Myrtle Beach, Raleigh, the quality is always the same. I can’t say that about the other chains in town. We have three BKs and I avoid two of them because the third makes them perfectly. I love my occasional yummy burger.
But you need a bank loan to,afford their burgers now days! That have gotten to be SO expensive. Except for an Krystal craving once in a while, I just make burgers at home . Fast food places either mess up my order ( and I do t want to have to drive all the way back to the restaurant to get it fixed ) or their burgers are just messed up by who ever makes them…too much mayo, or ketchup or lettuce or onions , or so,etching is left off , the bun is soggy ….
Loaded BBQ Big Buford from Checkers is one of my go to burgers. Also, the Garlic Butter Dobble from Steak ‘n Shake is fantastic. Wattaburger is great as well.
As much as I hate to risk having my Southern Card revoked, Culver’s gives them all a run for the money. The Butter Burger is pure heaven. It comes custom wrapped and then lovingly placed in a box to keep it in pristine burger condition. It actually looks like the picture! And don’t even get me started on the harbinger of summer happiness, their lemon ice. 🍋 Add raspberries to that lemon ice; you’ll thank me. I guess there are some good things north of the Mason Dixon after all...hmm 🤔
With Hardees/Carls Jr, I'm surprised you didn't get the Famous Star (which is their staple), cause yeah, it would have been MUCH better (also, their slogan is "If it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face.")
You’re my hero, Matt. “There’s some people out there that don’t care for Whataburger hamburgers. I don’t remember their names cause I shut them out of my life completely” 🤣🤣🤣
@@joseguadalupemartineztorre9702 mate there first three burgers are the original. Those burgers are the single patty, double patty, and triple patty. Single patty has plenty of meat it’s just not as much food as I want.
If I had to just get their basic burger (like in the video), my guess would be: 1) Carls Jr 2) What a Burger 3) Burger King 4) Wendys 5) Sonic 6 and 7) McDonalds and Krystal. If I could order whatever burger I want, I would have to put it into tiers: A Tier. I would be excited for these burgers: 1) Wendy's. Big Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger, add lettuce, tomato, and onions. Bacon Jam for the win. 2) Hardees/ Carls Jr. I used to love the double western bacon cheeseburger. It is not as good as I remember it being, but still tier 1. 3) What a Burger. This is just a projection as I haven't had enough of their menu items to decide, but I'd be excited to try more items. B Tier. Content but not excited. 4) Burger King. Probably a modified Texas Double Whopper. Who doesn't enjoy a double bacon cheeseburger? C Tier. Cautiously optimistic, but not getting my hope up. More bacon cheeseburgers from 5) McDonalds 6) Sonic D Tier. Its food. Probably. The bacon helps it go down. 7) Krystal's Bacon cheese crystal
I understand what you mean about Krystals. My Dad feels the same way about White Castle. I don't agree with it being #2, but I do understand the attachment to that little burger.
I got a bone to pick with you guys. I’m way up here in Virginia and I’m feeling left out. After all this was the birthplace of a lot of Southern greatness, but now we don’t get much love. Feeling like the red headed stepchild. Up your game or you lose this Lou!
You need to revisit this and add burgers from Cook Out, Freddy's Custard, and In & Out Burger. Biggest problem with McD's is that they can't produce a hot burger. I haven't had a hot burger from them in years, at multiple stores. Their process is broken.
A Freddy's Original Double is quite possibly the best, simple steak burger out there. Meat, cheese, mustard, onion, pickle. Cook Out's Cheddar Style burger is also a favorite go-to. Smothered in cheese sauce, bacon, and the biggest pile of sauteed onions you'll ever see. If you like onions, that's your burger.
Out of the story but I went to a Burger King because they advertised a veggie burger. I asked my local if they served a veggie burger and they said yes, so I ordered. I ended up with a hamburger roll with lettuce, a slice of tomato and some onion. I went into the store and asked what is this? They said they were out of veggie patties! Well then tell me that!
@@gibraltarfilms3993 They are actually in a lot of states. Just their presence is much, much smaller. I am looking at their locations list and they are in Alabama (15 locations), Arizona (25), Arkansas (5), Florida (38, really?!), Georgia (only one!), Louisiana (15), Mississippi (8), New Mexico (11), Oklahoma (33) and finally...of course Texas (678). So yeah, you can see that all locations in all other states don't come close to adding up to the locations in Texas. In other states you likely need to hunt them out, so that would make it feel like they aren't in other states compared to Texas.
@@dacypher22 and some investment firm in chicago bought a majority stake in whataburger a few months back and they're gonna expand. i like whataburger, they have a big juicy burger but texans tend to overrate them whataburger also doesn't do the folded egg nonsense... they crack eggs on the grill the way it supposed to be
Killa Jay I almost had to unfollow. Those ain’t Hardee’s burgers. Hardee’s is from my home town, and the freaking Canadians bought them, combined them with Carl’s Jr. (which I loathe) and ruined a perfectly great burger. You want Hardee’s though, get the Hot Ham-n-Cheese. You’ll thank me later.
Whataburger is just like the closest to sit down quality imo. If Krystal is indeed similar to white castle then i definitely understand the second place. Those a little weird burgers of love
I moved to NC from upstate NY about 13 years ago: no Sonic's up north. Lemme tell y'all, it blew me away! I LOVE Sonic. Well, loved. The restaurant closed and I haven't had it in like 10 years 😞 😢
Ingredients 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 Tablespoons sweet pickle relish 1 Tablespoon grated yellow onion (with juices) 2 teaspoons yellow mustard 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar (optional, see notes)* 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder Instructions Grate the onion using a box grater. Be sure to use any juices that accumulate with the onion. In a small bowl, mix all ingredients together. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. Notes *I prefer this sauce without vinegar, but if you want it to taste more identical to the actual Big Mac sauce, then I’d recommend starting with 1/2 teaspoon of white vinegar. After that, add 1/4 teaspoon of vinegar at a time until you get the taste you like. 1 teaspoon should be the max you would need.
Whataburger is hit or miss for me. They have a good burger, but I think it's the only place that I was ever served raw chicken. Not "undercooked" or "pink in the center", but "cooked for 2 minutes", "Pink all the way to the edge", "Gorden Ramsey shouting RAW", Raw chicken.
It was fun to watch I just discovered your channel. Think I pretty much agree with your rankings as far as the national chains go we don’t get Krystal in Minnesota and unfortunately we don’t get Whataburger ☹️love Whataburger! I was surprised not to see Culver’s I think I read that you’re located in Birmingham aand they do have Culver’s in Birmingham according to their map. have you ever eaten there ? what do you think of Culver’s? They are far and away my favorite.
Cookout needs to be in that list! Also, I love Krystal as well, was my first job, but it's really in a different class from those other burgers IMHO...
@@orlandoburgos9190 yeah the cheese curds down south are just mini mozzarella sticks but the ones up north are different.... I'm not sure how to explain it tbh
I had Krystal when I first moved down south 30 years ago. I finally had White Castle this year. There isn't a huge difference in the regular offerings, but it definitely swings in the WC's favor. Plus they have Harold & Kumar swag every now and then.
Great review here, and I agree.......... and I was hoping Culver’s would have made it into this list, and to see how he would have ranked it :-) It’s my personal favorite.
1) Hardee’s and Sonic thudding to the bottom’s a shock. I’m thinking bad/off locations burned you that day. 2) How the Sam Hill did y’all end up leaving off Dairy Queen? Isn’t that illegal? 😁 Thanks. This was awesome.
Native southerner here, but I live in Texas. All our Krystals have been closed for about a decade, so you already know whenever I pass through Louisiana, I’m buying a sackful. They know me in Slidell 😂
As a Texan, I am legally contracted to say that I love Whataburger. I actually do. But I also must say that Five Guys is the GOAT. In all your categories plus fries.
As a fellow Southerner, I'd pick Whataburger (Texas specifically) as first in the line up too. But if y'all ever find yourselves out West in New Mexico I urge you to try a "monster meal (triple meat, triple cheese)" at Griffs in Albuquerque!! Literally blows every other place out of the water!
Wendy's used to be consistently good across the board and not have a bad option on the menu, then they changed the ingredients in their food. Hasn't been the same since.
I remember going to Myrtle Beach with my family in the late 70's and we went to Wendy's a lot ! They were so good back then. They were thick, big, square, and juicy ! They used to definitely be the best, but not now.
@@ReformedSooner24 It's either my chain's cook or the meat just ain't as good as it used to be over 10 years ago. Whataburger tastes nasty to me now. That meat is hard and tough and gross I just don't get it.
You can say that about McDonalds, as well. The Double Quarter Pounder w/ cheese is their best burger...better than a Whopper, that's for sure. Wendy's burgers are not even close to as good as they were before they changed them...which is such a shame, because they USED to be righteous.
Cookout or 5 Guys, then Burger King Whopper, then Wendy's Single or Pretzel Pub. Honorable mention to McDonald's plain cheeseburger for nostalgia sake - sometimes 2 of these just hit the spot.
They used to have a chicken parmesan sandwich that would make you really sick. But it tasted really good. Only thing I ever liked from them. And then they discontinued it.
Hey Matt, for the sake of blessing your taste buds, I strongly recommend that you eat a "Five Guys" burger, and also a burger from "Come Back Shack" (in Charleston, SC.). "Five Guys" is a chain store, and "Come Back Shack" is a local burger joint. These two are close ties, with respect to burger-gasm, though "Come Back Shack" is better.
I was a vegetarian from age 16 to 36. The only fast food burgers I’d had prior to that were BK and MacDonald’s. After seeing the light, the only burger I’ve had comes from In&Out. Sooooo good! After watching this, I’m open to trying Whataburger. Lol.
