When I was 13 Paul Kossoff’s actor father David came to my school to do a one man show warning against drug use. He acted out his son going through heroin withdrawal which affected us all deeply. Such a sad loss. Free at their best were an incredible band, probably the subtlest of all the blues rock bands of the era.
Patrick Crowther I remember hearing about David Kossoff’s work with kids. Great memory. PK really was an incredibly gifted guitarist. Could wring more emotion out of a single note than anyone else I can think of. Ritchie Blackmore was a fan.
Same here Patrick, He Also Visited My School , Was'nt David Kossoff a Rabbi ? I know he presented a Religious programme on UK television..We were all Free fans back Then, Looking back it was Very brave of David Kossoff to embark on an Anti Drugs lecture tour having lost such a talented son to the damn things.
Free were a great band. Andy Fraser, very underrated bass player and songwriter, a prodigious talent. Simon Kirke is an excellent drummer. Paul Rodgers is one of the great rock singers, such a powerful but soulful voice. And Kossoff...I have never heard a guitarist with such an identifiable sound and emotive tone...only the likes of Hendrix, SRV, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton and David Gilmour have hit that soaring sound that Paul Kossoff did. So you have to put him alongside those names. The very best.
Thanks a million times for this video. Free are one of my favourite bands. Paul Kossoff, RIP, was such an amazing guitarist. He could put more emotion into 1 note than most could put into 100. Such a terrible loss. Paul "The Voice" Rodgers, says it all. My favourite album is "Highway" with the so great "Soon I Will Be Gone", my favourite. Second is "Fire And Water", with the title track and "Heavy Load". "Heartbreaker" has so many great songs on, it it is a must. Too many great songs to mention and all of the albums deserve to be listened to, especially now when there is a terrible lack of great bands.
It's great to see you rank these! They're such an underrated band. Tons of Sobs is one of the greatest albums of all time! I honestly prefer Free to Led Zeppelin and Bad Company.
Nick, I agree with you. I used to have guitar playing friends who rated Paul Kossoff more than Jimmy Page. The Plant versus Paul Rodgers deal is a no brainer. I have watched Free live in that TV studio in 1970 repeatedly. When I st a r t watching . . . I can't stop.
1. Free 2. Heartbreaker 3. Tons of Sobs 4. Fire and Water 5. Highway 6. Free At Last But, it's very difficult to rank these albums because they're all great!
Thanks Pete, I was hoping for this at some point. My order is: 1 Free 2 Fire & Water 3 Tons of Sobs 4 highway 5 Heartbreaker 6 Free at Last Fav track - Free Me
I was born in England and came to America in 1970 at age 6. FREE was my older brothers favorite band. We shared a bedroom and he played them constantly. Long story shorter, Paul Kossoff was the best of the British Blues 2nd Generation. Tone/Sustain/Melodic. His guitar was an extension of his soul. Today, 2020. They are in my Top 5 Favorite bands of the late 60's / Early 70's
Very true. Once they started putting in rappers and new wave (Depeche Mode) they went downhill for me. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame now is a joke. Sorry just my opinion.
Finally Free! Awesome band. Very deserving of enshrinement in the RARHOF. All their albums have a lot to say. Check out my personal rankings in terms of minutes of pure bliss: 1. Fire And Water (30) 2. Heartbreaker (30) 3. Free (28) 4. Highway (16) 5. Tons Of Sobs (15) 6. Free At Last (15)
thank you thank you thank you pete...love free...paul rodgers...simon kirke...paul kossoff...and the amazing andy fraser....i couldn't rank their albums but you did one helluva job....between the songs 'wishing well' and 'fire and water' alone, those two albums need top spots...but so do the others....and free 'live' is the cherry on top....
Tons of SOBS / definitely number ONE for me. Have them all. And agreed number 6. FREE at LAST. But 2-3-4-5. Could switch from day to day. Underrated gem to me anyway. Seven Angels. But ton of great songs. PETE. Album rankings. / I’s Awesome. Thank you
Hi Pete! Just discovered your channel and I applaud you for all the terrific work you do! I'd love to take a look through that awesome collection of stuff behind you! I was happy to see a video done for Free! Brilliant band of musicians I was turned on to by my older cousins as a kid. To think a band sounded like Free and it was comprised pretty much of high school aged guys when they first started is astounding. Anyhow, my list would vary a bit with their albums, depending on what day it is, but mostly would be: 1. Fire and Water, 2. Tons of Sobs 3. Free 4. Highway 5. Free At Last 6. Heartbreaker. An unfortunately short career for this band but they definitely left their mark. Is anyone over at the ROHOF even paying attention???
I have always loved Bad Company and All Right Now by Free but I knew nothing of their catalog of albums until about a month ago when I stumbled into Tons Of Sobs. I was ecstatic in how much I loved it yet a bit sad that I had never heard this album until now. Absolutely love it.
Great video. Not to many people know all these Free albums. I was lucky enough to sit in the orchestra section of the revolving stage at MSG when in july 1969 Free opened up for the legendary band Blind Faith , also on the bill was Delaney Bonnie and friends. Still have ticket stub, 6 bucks to see all these great acts..thanks for your videos
Hugely underrated band, just wish they were around for longer! Here’s my ranking: 1. Tons Of Sobs (one of the greatest blues rock albums ever) 2. Free / self-titled 3. Heartbreaker 4. Highway 5. Fire And Water (the title-track, Mr. Big and All Right Now are great, but the rest is just okay for me, and that’s why I’ve ranked it a little lower than most would) 6. Free At Last (still a solid album, but not as many memorable songs) Here’s my top 10 Free songs also: 1. Heartbreaker 2. I’m A Mover 3. Goin’ Down Slow 4. Mr. Big 5. Wishing Well 6. Free Me 7. Sweet Tooth 8. Walk In My Shadow 9. The Stealer 10. Woman
1) Heartbreaker (An elegiac , graceful and soaring masterpiece from beginning to end . Easily their greatest. Easy On My Soul possibly my all time favourite Free. One of the greatest finale albums ever created) 2) Fire And Water (Groove drenched brilliance) 3) Highway (Be My Friend and Soon I'll Be Gone their two other greatest) 4) Free ( a massive step forward after the more basic blues rock of the debut. It also has Mouthfull Of Grass, Mourning Sweet Morning 5) Free At Last (Sail On brilliant) 6) Tons Of Sobs
One of my all time favourite bands that were so young when All right now became a massive hit .For crying out loud Andy Fraser was only sixteen years old and the test not much older!! Fraser turned out to be their secret weapon with his songwriting and skills as a fine bass guitarist Their funky Blues groove was what made them so unique and that signature sound set them apart from the rest. My worst to best selections are ,6- Free at last,5-Highway, 4- Tons of sobs,3- Free, 2- Heartbreaker, 1- Fire and Water.Great hand
I love Free...absolutely awesome Band !!! Paul Rodgers is one of my favorites all times singers, Paul Kossof and all the Band is marvelous too, Great songs, bluesy feeling, powerful & melodic music, great riffs....agree with Pete In the ranking !!!
Heartbreaker is my favourite album, Kossoff on "come together in the morning" still gives me the chills. I love some of the more laid back tunes like "easy on my soul" "common mortal man", shame about Koss but he still shines on his tracks.Of the rest I go, Fire and Water, Tons of Sobs, Free, Highway, Free at Last.
Man, I'm so impressed w/ this band. Blend of folksy rock, metal, and pop - dynamite. A shame only lasted for about 5 yrs. 1. Fire and Water 2. Tons of Sobs 3. Free 4. Heartbreaker 5. Highway 6. Free at Last 7. Kossoff Kirke Tetsu Rabbit
Loved this band for ages, such a special and unique sound. Highly influential, all the LPs are great and some are spectacular. 01. Fire & water 02. Free 03. Heartbreaker 04. Highway 05. Tons of Sob 06. At Last
My ranking is 1.fire and water, 2, heartbreaker 3, free, 4 tons of sobs 4 highway 5 free at last. They were very young but immensely gifted as individuals who created a unique brand of funky bluesy rock, shot they were a great band. Thanks Pete for this ,they are my favourite British band of all time, in addition I just picked up a 2 disc anthology called Molten Gold, this is a sublimeoverview of a stellar band that is sorely missed, such talented dudes.
Thanks for doing this one Pete. A much loved band. Agree on Free at Last but it's still a very enjoyable listen. Heartbreaker is often under-rated but it would make my top three. Great songs and Rabbit's keyboard work really stands out. Marvellous vocals from Rodgers as usual. Highway is another often overlooked album but it's a gem. To me it was the really soulful side of Free that you could find on the albums and which made them so special. A tough one but I'll have a go: 1. Fire and Water 2. Heartbreaker 3. Free 4. Highway 5. Tons of Sobs 6. Free at Last
As a side note, I am fascinated with the similar melody/riff with Alright Now and Trapeze's Black Cloud. They were both recorded at a similar period in early '70. Pretty incredible.
@@apollomemories7399 read what I wrote yet again. You took my comment and ran off into conjecture without being able to reach a definitive conclusion. I said it wasn't as if they were hanging out in the studio together. The tone of the lead guitars, the riff, it is reflrctive of that window of time.
Our lists were very close this time. Here's mine: 6) At Last 5) Heartbreaker 4) Free 3) Highway 2) Fire & Water 1) Tons Of Sobs Tons Of Sobs is one of the best records of the era, in my opinion.
My order is: 1) Highway 2) Fire and Water 3) Heartbreaker 4) Free 5) Tons of Sobs 6) Free at Last If we were talking about the albums produced during Free's lifetime, I would probably put Free Live! at No. 2 and it also almost serves as an early greatest hits album. KKTR right up there too if you love Kossoff!
OK Pete here is my take:6)Free At Last-I agree with your summary. 5)Highway- yeah I couldn't connect with this one. 4)Heartbreaker- This one was a little stronger(I guess because of Wishing Well). 3)Free 1969 2nd album- I almost put this on the bottom as it was somewhat of a letdown after TOS, but on repeated listen, it has kept it's place(nice acoustic moments and still a few good tracks). 2Tons Of Sobs- This is the blues album that should've put them on the map!(I got the bonus tracks version). 1)Fire and Water- (again I have the bonus tracks version),how can you not like an album with Mr big and All Right Now on it? This one always tops my playlists!! Keep up the good work! I also agree that it is too bad we don't have more from them!! Long live Free!!
Paul Kossoff was my hero when I was a teenager. Not a fast or fancy guitar player but played with so much feeling! The Hunter on the Free Live album is his best guitar playing (for me anyway).
My favourite band. I think if Paul Kossoff were still with us and the guys played longer with each other, Free would be bigger than Led Zeppelin 1.Fire and Water - The final definition of the group's sound and aesthetics. A perfect album in every inch. 2.Tons of Sobs - The debut album shows how much can be achieved by simple means. Traditional blues, yet fresh and thrilling. The phenomenon of all four saw the light of day. One of the greatest debuts of the time. 3.Free - Great album cover. Surprise from the first song - vocal harmony. The compositions are more varied. This album has excellent boys' versatility. 4.Heartbreaker - The last sounds of the band.Less Kossoff and Fraser You can hear John Rabbit Bundrick keys and the Testu Yamauchi bass. The title track is amazing. Easy on my soul playing the guitar Snuffy Walden, however, rules the piano.Good interesting and catchy album 5.Free At Last - Album at a high production level It sounds clear and warm and rich. Child a great song. Rodgers hypnotizes. Great potential 6.Highway - The band's success and conflict showed this album. Not enough energy. The repertoire is very varied. Be My Friend fantastic. Unfortunately, not enough Kossoff. Love You So, a wonderful ballad. The greatest and most underrated band in the world
We seem to have the same taste in classic rock! Free was, and still is, one of my all time favorite bands! I agree almost 100% with your ranking of the albums too! I'm not a super fan of the second album but hey, it's Free...! ToS is my favorite as well, Fire and Water my second favorite. I like the Live album a lot as well!
Hey Pete, because of your love for British blues based hard rock (Whitesnake, Free, Bad Company etc.) I'm amazed your not into Thunder? A great British based band who produce great bluesy hard rock in the same vein of those 70s legends. I'm aware that they never made it over in America but over here in England their albums usually make the top 10 and they sell out arenas. If you get the time check them out. I'm sure you'd love them 👍
Such a tough call this one. For me Fire and water number one. Not because of all right now, but "oh I wept" my goodness that song epitomises Free. Paul Rodgers though? Just the best soulful, bluesy, rock singer ever, and still sounds amazing.
Free should have been huge, but, they are only known to the masses with their single “All Right Now”. When they first came on the scene, they were first compared to Cream, but Zeppelin had just appeared, so they were unfortunately, left in the shadow of these other bands. For me, “Tons of Sobs” is my absolute favourite, followed by the mellow “Highway”. Both albums display their incredible musicianship and diversity.
i was just thinking about you doing this band but didnt want to say anything cause yuv be complaining about that alot then boom there it is. keep up the good work thanks
Fantastic blues band, Tons if Sobs came out when most of the band was 19-20 years old. Andy Fraser was only 17. But still, they could play with anyone. Released two albums in 1969 and two more in 1970. Here is my list. 1 Fire and Water 2 Tons of Sobs 3 Heartbreaker 4 Free 5 Highway 6 Free at Last Thanks
Free, one of the greatest rock bands of all time and one of the most influential. Paul Rodgers is the greatest singer in rock n roll in my opinion. Like Pete, I love all the albums so I love even my number 6. 1 Fire and Water 2 Heartbreaker 3 Tons of Sobs 4 Free 5 Free At Last 6 Highway. Would love to see your ranking of the Bad Company discography at some time, Pete.
As a young rock fan (7 or 8), Heartbreaker was the second album I ever bought. Paul Rodgers is my number one rock vocalist of all time. 1. Heartbreaker 2. Fire and Water 3. Tons of Sobs 4. Highway 5. Free 6. Free at Last
When i heard Common Mortal Man on Sirius XM Radio i knew i had to ge the cd it was from. Mesmerizing tune, great chord structure, great lyrics, great song on piano as well even though its guitar based, but i think there is background piano, Another good one is Easy on my Soul, laid back tune, but wicked keyboard on this track as well, Heartbreaker is excellent as well, know some of thier other tunes from other albums, but this one is great
I can honestly say that I’ve never listened to a Free album but I’ve always been a big Bad Company fan. Don’t know why I’ve never checked them out since half of Bad Co is in the band. The only songs I know from the band are All Right Now and Fire & Water which I only know about from Ace Frehley’s cover with Paul Stanley singing on Origins Vol. 1. Definitely will give the band a listen.
You own every Free album...now you got me wanting to compete my Free collection...got Tons Of Sobs...thanks to your review...got Fire And Water and The Free Story...and that's it so far...but I want the rest of their discs and remastered as well...and not to change the subject but I don't think I've ever seen you hold up and review any T Rex albums on disc..I have Electric Warrior, The Slider, and Tanx, and I think they're awesome albums...what do you think Pete?
Stephen - Wonder whether two of my playlists, previously posted on this channel, might be of interest. As a young teenager in 1971, I first encountered both Free and T.Rex and have owned pretty much their complete discography for many years. Hope that the links still work. :D Free ‘Fire And Water’ (‘Fire And Water’ 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-khMURIbXV9g.html ‘I’m A Mover’ (‘Tons Of Sobs’ album 1969) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bqJQHZu1Dg0.html ‘All Right Now’ (‘Fire And Water’ 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m9ZW0tVV9zo.html ‘All Right Now’ (single 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F4lHdoQYqB4.html ‘Walk In My Shadow’ (‘Tons Of Sobs’ album 1969) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d9_Egq3ZMxw.html ‘The Stealer’ (‘Highway’ album 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cuQTYJCdvuE.html ‘Travelling Man’ (‘Free At Last’ album 1972) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2I_a8Zxy_jY.html ‘Oh I Wept’ (‘Fire And Water’ 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uI27EYADbYA.html ‘Only My Soul’ (single ‘B’ side 1971) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gs_6r9V3lr0.html ‘Remember’ (‘Fire And Water’ 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hxk6RwXc0E8.html ‘Little Bit Of Love’ (‘Free At Last’ album 1972) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-viY0nTjWD_I.html ‘Wishing Well’ (‘Heartbreaker’ album 1973) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AdWz2fbiSno.html ‘Trouble On Double Time’ ('Live At The BBC’ 1968-71) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WvfeCSKliwY.html ‘The Highway Song’ (‘Highway’ album 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xQGRDNYk_Gs.html ‘On My Way’ (‘Highway’ album 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-38wTmNufyeQ.html ‘Wild Indian Woman’ (‘Tons Of Sobs’ album 1969) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gRba8tptVbE.html ‘My Brother Jake’ (single 1971) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y7N9Yvu-j-Y.html ‘Woman’ (‘Free’ album 1969) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FsYuNoHJ3d8.html ‘Soon I Will Be Gone’ (‘Highway’ album 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i7xmittpX3g.html ‘Sail On’ (‘Free At Last’ album 1972) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uoHIumxOWig.html ‘Heavy Load’ (‘Fire And Water’ 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ej1ctia5EGk.html ‘Heartbreaker’ (‘Heartbreaker’ album 1973) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FfNxuSjfPbw.html ‘Seven Angels’ (‘Heartbreaker’ album 1973) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cqRPCNLoXjs.html ‘The Hunter’ (‘Free Live! 1971) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fIdEDDaoqBA.html ‘Mr Big’ (‘Free Live!' 1971) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E-ad8dSRAJU.html ‘Ride A Pony’ (‘Highway’ album 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p36ZRjS_8z4.html ‘Bodie’ (‘Highway’ album 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wA3MYB8kdaQ.html ‘Be My Friend’ (‘Highway’ album 1970) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XvDNS_x3BTo.html ‘Mourning Sad Morning’ (‘Free’ album 1969) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zdsgiHNU_1I.html ‘Common Mortal Man’ ('Heartbreaker’ album 1973) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ULbsZesjpkI.html ‘Come Together In The Morning’ (‘Heartbreaker’ album 1973)ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YhRIHe0-4Gk.html ‘Songs Of Yesterday’ (‘Free’ album 1969) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YJY8vGbZ7V8.html ‘Catch A Train’ (‘Free At Last’ album 1972) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wkwfq1YS1A4.html ‘Goodbye’ (‘Free At Last’ album 1972) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tSonq8BjOKo.html ‘Lady’ (‘The Free Story’ 1973) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u1EWuxoBQeY.html ‘Get Where I Belong’ (‘Free Live!’ 1971) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AGTsSkKqjM0.html ‘Just For The Box’ (‘The Free Story’ 1973) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oEfVcm2a61k.html T.Rex 01. Saw, experienced them LIVE at Atlanta's Municipal Auditorium! Paul Rodgers has one of the top 5 rock vocals . . . ever. Free, the band was amazing rock, blues rock, brit rock then more rock. Yes, I like them more than the great Bad Company.
Snuffy Walden actually played guitar on a lot of the tracks on Heartbreaker to round out the ensemble’s sound. He would later go on to form a great band called Stray Dog, which was signed to E.L.P’s Manricore label.
Yes! I definitely want to see that! They're a good companion band to Free. They were on the same label, and they both compliment eachother very well; Free for heavy rock'n'roll, Traffic for those laid back jams.
Another idea. I know you've got lotsa cool stuff cookin'. But after you reach the 30k mark, maybe do a shorter Part 2 of the Live Album Wars that would include albums that I'm sure you've take your fair share of heat for not including. Since we're talking Traffic, how about On the Road? Steve Winwood's two guitar solos in (Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired are alone worth the price of admission. Gotta love it!
Love the file boxes on the top shelf. Do those contain all the albums you consider crap? LOL Also another good band with a limited album output was Blackfoot! And just so you know I'm a real big Black Oak Arkansas fan. Being from Arkansas, these guys were a big influence for me, especially once Tommy Aldridge joined the band.
Interesting choice for me Tons Of Sobs any day of the week stunning album that is said only cost £600 to produce. Alex Korner gave them the name and coughed up the money. For second best is their second album Free, love Mourning Sad Morning, really lets you know are great a voice Rodgers has got. Chris Wood from Traffic on flute just takes the song to another level.
@@jamesnash7262 oh yes I forgot about that video from the 80s MTV years and I never was so excited in my whole life to see Jimmy, and he looked to be having such a good time, then next thing you know Robert Plant he's doing that Honeydrippers stuff and Page is doing the solo on Sea of Love, then the release of the first album by The Firm and the Led Zeppelin live Aid thing and then the second firm album in 86, and Robert was releasing his solo stuff at the time, really a great time to enjoy their stuff
Simon Kirke gets lots of killer sound from his minimal 4 piece drum kit, great underrated drummer IMO. His daughter, Lola is an actress, she was in Gone Girl.
Saw Free in 1972 open for The Faces at Auburn University. Great show but later that night one of the roadies for Free overdosed and passed away. No better Rock band than Free in the seventies. The Faces were amazing that night also and were also one of the best Bands I have ever seen in concert and that's a long list.
Ironic as it is it is Heartbreaker is my favorite album . Kossoff is only on a few tracks , but his playing on the title track is stunning . Twin guitars , over dubbed of course , sound great . Bundrick's song writing and keyboards were great . I love Muddy Water and Easy on my Soul . Tetsu went on to join The Faces and Paul Rogers and Simon Kirk formed Bad Company . Paul Kossoff formed his own band but passed away in 1974 . Andy Fraser ( not on this album ) formed his own band .
Highway, Free - Free and Fire and Water are musically miles above the others. Andy Fraser at the helm of those. All great players. On Heartbreaker they really miss him. He said, after hearing that album, he knew it was the direction they'd take.
awesome for doin Free .the band didnt like the word highway being on frt cover with no mention of Free. they thought peeps wood start callin them highway
For me Tons of Sobs is more fun than Zep one. I tend to agree with Koss though that the later albums were great. I love Sail on, Travelin' Man, Little Bit of Love and Child is beautiful. Free at Last on headphones is a revealing experience. Heartbreaker to is very emotive, great songs.
1) Fire & Water 2) Highway 3) Free 4) Tons of Sobs 5) Heartbreaker 6) Free At Last 'Tons of Sobs' is the sound of a band with plenty of energy but lacking a bit of maturity, hence it only comes in a #4. 'Highway' rates #2 because 'The Stealer' is my favourite track from the band. 'Fire and Water' has everything even if I don't care if I never hear 'Alright Now' again let alone be forced to play it!! 🤣 Nothing matches 'Free Live!' though, especially that version of 'The Hunter' which features one of the best guitar solos ever!
...the quanta of light hanging in the air to your left is beautiful and appropriate to the spirit of the master Paul Kossoff...the tone the taste the less is more confidence and soul that lets 3 notes suffice for 13...is it Rabbit from Back Street Crawler ?
...thanks apollomemories73 , i have only "The Band Plays On" of course with Mike Montgomery , and do not have the later Free album , still adding to "Highway" and "Free at Last" lps...
...i've never seen "2nd Street"...have seen two or three Crawler albums and resisted , fearing disappointment , though understand they're quite good , so likely in future...thanks again for background...
