Samacre: 1966-1976... Yardbirds with Beck then Page, Beatles touring in support of 'Revolver' (1966) then doing Sgt. Pepper, The Stones, Jimi, Cream, Pink Floyd, Yes, Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Doors, The Who, Queen, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, David Bowie with Mick Ronson, the James Gang with Joe Walsh then Tommy Bolin, the Kinks, Allman Brothers, the original Alice Cooper Group, the Bay City Rollers... Okay, scratch the Bay City Rollers but you get the point. 1966-1976 was the greatest ten years for rock music.
SHAME ON ME! I forgot to mention Black Sabbath on this, the 50th anniversary of the release of their debut album.😬 I guess I should also mention Free since Ronnie was a huge fan of them.
I was lucky enough to work with Ed King in my home studio and he told me he had an even better solo on the song The Last Rebel... But the engineer accidently erased part it. It's a fabulous slide solo.
Yesterday you popped up as a suggestion from RU-vid. To my surprise I really enjoy you show. Mainly because you introduce me to parts of a band’s discography that I was ignorant of.
Love anything Lynyrd Skynyrd. God Bless Gary Rossington for keeping the band together all these years. Thanks Johnny for keeping your brothers legacy alive.
I'm torn between "gimmie back my bullets" and "nuthin' fancy." They're a little harder than the other three, I feel, but I genuinely love all the original albums, there isn't a bad song that classic skynyrd ever made in my opinion.
Exactly, thats why bullets is my fav and i love on the hunt! Id have to say thats probably the heaviest song they did althiugh there are a few on bullets too!
I can still remember buying my first Skynyrd album at musicland in the mall in 1976. I would have been 10 years old, SO. That one to me this day is my favorite, such a killer album! My Wife and I danced to I Need You at our wedding 27 years ago ( I don't dance, but you know the big wedding dance or whatever). Couldn't agree more with your assessment, sometimes I'll be driving and can't help but wonder what treasures we would have been blessed with 20 or 30 years later from this amazing lineup. Thanks for Sharing👍👍
I just discovered your channel while looking for a Skynyrd album ranking video. I'm glad RU-vid recommended your channel. I love the passion you have for Skynyrd. I am just getting back into them after having a conversation with my brother on their 70s albums. I'll definitely start collecting physical copies of their albums after watching your video. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos. Best, Steve
Had "pronounced" on an 8-track tape when I was like 12 and played it constantly. Listened to the full album again for the first time in 40 or so years after watching Pete's fine video and was blown away by Skynyrd's superb musicianship. They really were one of the best bands ever!
1) street survivors 2) (pronounced 'lēh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) 3) Seconding Helping 4) Gimme Back My Bullets 5) Nuthin' Fancy was lucky enough to see them at knebworth 76 wow what a blast that was luv them ever since
michael brogden you lucky dog. I only got to see Rossington Collins band. That was really cool. But to see Ronnie with Lynyrd Skynyrd well that’s as killer as seeing the Doors with Jim Morrison. If I were to have seen either of those two bands I would have fulfilled a fantasy of mine. I’ve seen some great bands in they’re prime like Iron Maiden in 85, Judas Priest same time as well as Jimmy Page in the Firm, . I saw so many cool bands in the early-mid- late 80’s. All the way up till last year. I’ve seen Ozzy with Randy Rhoades. In the late 80’s I watched Stranger band and who shows up to jam with them. None other then Greg Allman! I’d trade all that to see the original Lynyrd Skynyrd or another Florida boy Jim Morrison with the Doors. I’d flip your 1st 3 around a bit. But I could listen to any of they’re original albums plus the original sessions before they hit it touring withe The Who!
In 1973 I had a revelation when the Pronounced album was released. One of the top debut albums of all time. In fact there is not a single track on any of the first five albums that is not a classic. They were a legend already before the disaster that hit them and they were keeping it alive afterwards. It was there way to deal with what had happened and you have to accept this and admire them. They could have continued without the heritage under a different name and would still be a classic band of southern rock in their own right. One could even make two separate lists for the two incarnations of the band. 1. Pronounced (This is on my list of the top 20 studio albums of all time) 2. Street Survivors (At that point they were ready to dethrone the Rolling Stones or anyone else considered the greatest rock band in the world. Which makes the tragedy even greater than it was already) 3. Gimme Back my Bullets 4. Nuthin' Fancy 5. Second Helping 6. The Last Rebel (1991 was the return but it was not so sure where they would go - this one defined that they would continue and they would be a force to reckoned with, not just a revival band.) 7. 1991 8. Vicious Cycle 9. Last of a Dying Breed 10. Edge of Forever 11. Twenty 12. God & Guns (This is the only one I have doubts with - with Ronnie these topics would have been treated with some irony and distance, here I am not sure I really like the message. The playing is not their best either.)
great ranking pete, my birthday is actually on Oct. 20th and one of my earlier memories of childhood is vaguely remembering news coverage of the crash but being only 10yo and not totally understanding it all at the time and the depth of it all, Skynyrd always has and always will be huge in indiana because of the rural/country way of life in big parts of the state so Skynyrd has always held a special place in my musical heart of hearts and it can NEVER be stated strongly enough just how great of a songwriter and lyricist Ronnie was-VERY UNDER RATED-I CAN'T STRESS THAT ENOUGH!! he was a true master of the style and genre. i also remember hearing Johnny's "Brickyard Road" back in the day and feeling Yeah-it was right and can now work for him to take the reins in his own way and i really feel if it wasn't going to be Johnny or Donnie that it would have never continued simply because it was blood, and i truly and really don't think the fan base would have accepted it any other way either. as you mentioned in your ranking ,yeah they have done some fairly strong material since mark2 but the total essense is in the 70's magic. i have and cherish my original "flames" cover vinyl record of Street Survivors and it is very special to me personally. the Allman Brother and Lynyrd Skynyrd are THE pinnacle and untouched as far as i'm concerned for the southern rock genre-and rock in general are way up there for me. #1 Street , #2 Pronounced , #3 Gimme Back , #4 Second Helping , #5 Nuthion' Fancy , and the rest. yep, red, white and blue i think is the best song in the mark2 material. LONG LIVE LYNYRD SKYNYRD- FLY HIGH FREEBIRD!!!!! \m/ \m/
I didn't hear you mention the album Endangered Species, that's my favorite album of the new version of LS. It contains acoustic versions of many of their classics - give it a listen, you might be surprised!
Being an old Florida boy!!! I always loved Skynyrd. But I’m not gonna lie, I never gave Skynyrd a chance after Ronnie and Steve and Cassie died. I did buy and love Rossington Collins band. I always loved Allen’s guitar work. To me pronounced was always number one with a bullet! Then street survivors and their second album was great. Nuthin fancy and gimme back my bullets are one and the same to me. Great but not as great as the other three. But the muscle shoals record didn’t even get a mention . It is as great as the pronounced album to me! Me and my buddies used to go out in the woods start a Bon fire and bring our women and get drunk and sing Skynyrd songs till the wee hours of the night. But I quit drinking and I don’t miss it. God bless and thank you for covering the great Lynyrd Skynyrd!!!!
Pete: where's the record titled First and Last? Down South Jukin' was a hit, I guess, but that record has some awesome tracks on it: Wino, Preacher's Daughter, White Dove, Things Going On.
Good morning from Skynyrd Land,North Florida. Thank you so much for the thought and respect you showed in this video. Like you, I have to break it up in 2 eras. Very well spoken and handled with class. These guys are the reason I play guitar, love them like family. Thanks again
I have always thought the same thing as you when it comes to what was in store for the band after Street Survivors. They played their next to the last show before the crash in my hometown of Lakeland Fl. Steve Gaines was as good of a guitar player as you'll ever encounter. What a band!
Nuthin’ Fancy is maybe my favorite album by Skynyrd. Love the deeper cuts and the hits on it. Can’t believe you even wasted time talking about the later stuff.
Great stuff, Pete. I just recently discovered your shows and am happily hooked. And I fully agree with you, about sticking with long-tenured bands as they go through thick and thin, new members, singers, etc. although I fully 'get' people who don't. To each our own. I'm very loyal that way (aside from when Chicago went total schlock in the 80s lol; like you I think their first 3 studio albums are amazing, and everything else is good up until Terry Kath died, maybe Hot Streets, not bad, the first one after his passing). Oh, right, this a video on Skynyrd! sorry, I tend to ramble talking about music. :) I love the post-crash stuff too, musically anyway and I saw the Vicious Cycle tour also, really good album and they were awesome live. Anyway, also love your rants about songs that are endlessly overplayed; in fact I got so worked up about that years ago I wound up doing, and still do, a fun volunteer radio DJ gig playing classic rock deep cuts. Take care, love your show.
Totally agree. I buy all my fav bands records, even if I know it’s not super great...just to support the band, hoping enough fans buy it so they will make another one, which may be killer
Man those 70s albums are so strong! If only that plane crash didn’t happen…. Here’s my top five, bearing in mind that I love them all almost equally: 1. Pronounced 2. Second Helping 3. Street Survivors 4. Nuthin’ Fancy 5. Gimme Back My Bullets
Good one. Pardo! One of my favorite bands, growing up in mid/late 70's, early 80's. The first LP i heard was FIRST AND LAST and Street Survivors around 78. My two favorites. Second Helping/ Nuthin Fancy , the Ed King era is also brilliant. Seen them about 4-5 times since 1991. I skipped the recent tour. I saw RIckey Medlocke fronted Medlocke around 1996, and had him autograph my First and Last copy , that he is one.
I'm glad you went through the later Skynyrd albums, not sure what my order would be on them, but I definitely agree with you on vicious cycle, great album with Johnny
"Street survivors" is the one! Love all their albums. So many great songs on their post-reunion releases. Proof of it is the huge "End of the road" from the fantastic "1991".
Their 1976 live album "One More From The Road" is excellent & my favorite 70's live album!! Also not to mention "Skynyrd's First" is also worth hearing as well as "Collectybles" (2 disc set from 2000) which contains demos & stuff!!!
Brilliant stuff once again, Pete. I only know the Ronnie albums. Should check out the rest. 1. Pronounced 2. Street Survivors 3. Second Helping 4. Nuthin’ Fancy 5. Gimme Back My Bullets
Pete - I cannot believe we have the same top 5 and in that same order. Pronounced is the 1st Skynyrd album I had at age 13. I think Simple Man is their best song. I Ain't the One, Poison Whiskey, Tuesday's Gone. All Killer. Street Survivors is a close number 2 and I had the flame album cover. I also remember the tour schedule being included in the album. Very chilling. Love the rankings. Would love to see one on ELP!
Great vid! Glad to see some of the later day albums getting some love. I hated this band for years because our local classic rock station played the hits so much that I got turned off to the band. It wasn't until years later that I started listening to the remainder of their tracks & found out just how great they were & still are.
Street Survivers, was a peak, every song was good,The addition of Steve Gains, writing and his singing and guitar playing, all the guys were at the top of their game, it’s got a lot of variety!
Ed King Used to live near me(Woodbine, New Jersey) we became freinds about a year before he passed away. Very nice man and great guitarist/songwriter. The plane crash was just damn tragic.
All of their stuff is very fine IMHO. The top two picks are very outstanding. Skynyrd Pronounced had the energy as the band was working hard to get their name and sound out there. Street Survivors was just awesome due to the work on the album by the producer Steve Gaines, who was an intense musician. My favorite album personally is Second Helping, which is their "B" sides containing some magnificent tunes that were not necessarily big on the radio, but were the staple for the true fans. Especially "Swamp Music". When I first encountered the band, what captured my ear the most was the wonderful sweeping piano work. OH YEAH!
Saw them on their first ever date in the u.k. support to, Golden Earring. St George’s Hall, Bradford. Saw the original line up again, as one of the support bands for, The Rolling Stones, at Knebworth.
In my humble opinion, 'Freebird' must be one of the greatest songs ever recorded. I think we can all relate to those lyrics one way or another. As a drummer, I just love how the tempo picks up during the guitar solos. A reason why I hate click tracks! This is a truly organic work of art, like ''Stairway'.
Like you said as you get older things change ,for example when my only son joined the Us Marine corps a few years ago ,the song Simple man took on a whole new meaning to me.
pete i urge you to do a ranking the albums for Van der graaf generator.I would really love to hear your opinion on their catalogue. This is one of my top 3 favorite prog bands ever with such an eclectic collection of albums.
All Lynyrd Skynyrd My Favorite I Got Cds And DVD’s Live And you Still Done Great RU-vid Showing Fans Watch you And Will Have Great Day And Keep It Up Party On 👍🏼😀🤘🏻
I love the albums from the debut through to Street Survivors to bits, and these two are probably my favorites...but man, there's something about Vicious Cycle that really gets me. It's heavy as all hell in spots, it's well produced, the tunes are memorable, Life's Lessons is a masterpiece...Lucky Man is amazing as well, I absolutely love Hell Or Heaven, Mad Hatter, The Way, Red, White and Blue, the album starts with two rocking songs ...hell, the whole thing is great. In my top 3 that's for sure, and maybe even my number 1:)
1. Gimme back my bullets- My favorite 2. Street Survivors 3. Nuthin Fancy 4. Pronounced 5. Second Helping Original Skynyrd just like ZZ Top and David Lee Roth Van Halen have almost no filler on their albums.
Pete. Great list. Pretty close to mine but it changes from time to time for me. I also like Vicious Cycle a lot as far as their latter works. 1. Street Survivors 2.Pronounced 3. Bullets 4. Second Helping 5. Fancy Love them all and hard to decide. I shy away from the radio songs and go to stuff like Cry For The Bad Man, On The Hunt, I Never Dreamed, Roll Gypsy Roll etc.
While there was a hiatus let's not forget the Rossington Collins band which put out a couple of good albums and was equally tragic. Arrival of Medlocke tightened them up. The influence they have is remarkable. Prob up there with Stones/Zep in influencing players. 38 Special and Molly Hatchett amongst others got their sounds from Skynyrd. Tom Dowds production was a great help. Stunning gtr tones which they replicated live. Drive by truckers got a great song from the Skynyrd crash.
Pete/ tremendous show. / informative. I missing 3 of the list ( all after plane). My favorite ( just my opinion). STREET SURVIVORS. But top 5. Almost same as you. I actually love the 1980 Rossington /Collins. “ Don’t Misunderstand Me. Awesome song. I play all the time. Dale krantz. Tremendous voice. / obviously just my opinion. Thx for this PETE
Great video..... My favourites...... 1: Street Survivors.... Steve Gaines would have been huge. A great talent. Just love the song writing on this album. 2: Pronounced 3: Second Helping 4: Gimme Back My Bullets 5: Nuthin Fancy I dont have any studio albums beyond this, though I do have the live album from the Vicious Cycle tour which is really good.
Hey, I mentioned in the comments a few weeks back to do Skynyrd! Cool! Man, the top 3 are virtually a tie..but here you go. I'm not familiar with the 90's + stuff...some good songs but very by the numbers southern rock, IMO. 5. Nuthin' Fancy 4. Gimme Back My Bullets 3. Street Survivors (mature album, shows the band really growing as songwriters) 2. Pronounced (Amazing debut) 1. Second Helping (First studio album of theirs I heard - not including Gold & Platinum - and the energy here is unrivaled, 8 perfect songs...Breeze, Curtis Lowe, Alabama, MCA, No Questions, Swamp Music, Needle and the Spoon and the KILLER I Need You.
1.-Nuthin' Fancy 2.-Prononced... 3.- Street Survivors. The Gold & Platinum and the Live Álbum are great and The Complete Muscle Shoals sessions are very good.
Play some Skynyrd, man! They are one of the best American rock bands of all time. Southern Rock was so huge in the 1970s & early 1980s. So many excellent bands that a lot people don't even know about. I love their 70s output but, to be honest, I never gave their later 80s material a chance. Street Survivor, Pronounced, Second Helping, Give Me Back My Bullets and Nuthin' Fancy are all classic Southern Rock. Thanks for your list! P.S.What are your thoughts on lesser know SR bands like White Witch & Hydra?
I started to like this band as I got older. Great band for sure. Their top songs for me are: Sweet home Alabama, Simple Man, That Smell, Workin' for MCA and Free Bird.
Ronnie was building for the future. He Expected Steve Gaines to become the main person in the band. He even said that the leader of the band one day would be Gaines who would lead the band into the future.
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist it is a wee bit différent man that was them finding a replacement for a lead singer. Greatdead is now Dead and compeny, had they changed up the name it my have been a little more than just living off their name. Peace
Pete- The album that could have fit here was The Complete Muscle Shoals Sessions. I know you don’t include compilations but this kind of isn’t one. It’s the initial recordings they did but didn’t come out until after the crash. Part of them on First and Last and then all of them on this album. I would recommend It to any fans as you get to hear more unpolished early versions of some of their classic tunes. Ricky Medlocke plays drums on most of these tracks too.
There’s also a movie biopic about Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane crash story in the perspective of Artimus Pyle (their newest drummer who replaced Bob Burns at the time). Go Watch the Trailer!
My first album I ever bought was one more from the road and it’s still my favorite album! I loved all the original music! The original band were young talented and they put the work in to get tight ! Just my two cents!
First two albums always always my fav from this absolutely AMAZIN band again tough for me as they are one of my all time favourites got to say love Al the 70s stuff not one weak album at all. I do ike post crash skynyrd actually very much the albums I play the most are twenty an god and guns
My 10 Favorite Bands of All Time ( nnio ) ; - The Rolling Stones - KISS - Lynryd Skynyrd - RUSH - Jethro Tull - ZZ Top - Van Halen/Hagar - Billy Joel - The Beatles - JC Mellencamp
Oct. 20th, 1977. I remember it well. I had some friends who were supposed to go to the show in Baton Rouge, their destination when the plane crashed. Louisiana always was a huge Skynyrd fan base. For me 'Second Helping' is my favorite. It's hard to pick a "best" Skynyrd album (of the pre-crash band), the debut LP had an AMAZING set of songs but this album is more smooth and a bit more polished with Leon on bass - Ed King played bass on 'Pronounced...'. (Leon wrote the parts but wasn't confident of himself at the time and skipped the sessions. Crazy, huh? He was an awesome bassist.) 'Street Survivors' would've put Skynyrd over the top. I rank them as 'America's Greatest Band'.
It's difficult to see past the first 2 albums as the tops and the Ronnie Van Zant stuff is seminal. It is noticeable that since they reformed the live set is dominated by their 70s output with only a few songs from a current album that is their most recent. The post reformation albums tend to be more hard-edged and still hugely enjoyable for the most part. 1 Pronounced Lennard Skinnard 2 Second Helping 3 Street Survivors 4 Give Me Back My Bullets 5 Edge of Forever 6 Vicious Cycle 7 Nuthin' Fancy 8 1991 9 Twenty 10 Last of A Dying Breed.
The first Rossington Collins Band album and the only Allen Collins Band album deserve consideration among the post crash Skynyrd output. ACB's Here There and Back is especially great. All of the post crash stuff is competent, but (IMHO) the lyrics just don't have the spirit that Ronnie brought. I tried to rank the 5 pre-crash albums, but it's pretty much a 5 way tie, with the edge shifting based on my mood. Probably put Pronounced 1st, and Nothin' Fancy in 5th, but barely. I have a real soft spot for Gimme Back My Bullets, I (first) saw them on that tour... The sound was a little stripped down with only 2 guitarists (after Ed King left, before Steve Gaines joined). Gimme Back also has more Allen Collins written songs that any other album.
Wow, I never knew they did a cd reissue of the original cover of street survivors. My ex step mother had a copy back in the day but I think it was recalled for a long time. I guess enough time has passed where they figure it was just a weird coincidence with the flames and not a big deal. I doubt that will ever happen with a certain live DT album though.
Street survivors is my fav. Got to do one on the Allman brothers band. In my opinion greatest southern rock band ever. I think their 90s albums were as strong as their classic stuff.
