Look at some of those dross squads - Gervinho, Djourou, Chamakh, etc. still got into the top four and competed some years. Ok but he didn’t win a premier league for that decade, left arsenal in shambles when he left cus he couldn’t have been bothered about youth and development, look at where Liverpool are under klopp now, only other managers I’ve seen do that are pep and sir Alex, ik we didn’t win the premier league a lot, but it also has to be said that we got 97,91 and 99 points in a space of 4 years while also being in 3 champions league finals in those 4 years, when has arsenal wenger ever done that, if not for ramos being one of the dirtiest players in history breaking salahs arm and karius having the worst performance of all time in a game we would have won that final, then go to the other final against Madrid, courteous had arguably the greatest performance in a cl final ? These aren’t excuses by the way they are just variables and reason to why we lost, and don’t get me started on the premier league.

Entertaining, revolutionary, trophy winning football, then suddenly hindered financially just as money started spiralling out of control in the Premier League (Chelsea & City), and still managed to consistently finish top 4. Buvy doesn’t seem to realise that in a lot of the wenger and fergie era the prem wasn’t the behemoth it is now and the talent was much more spread out. Serie A teams were stacked as hell, so were the German, Spanish and even the French teams so it was much harder to win in Europe.
@B_enn
@B_enn 6 месяцев назад
But the point you're missing is that the PL is far more competitive now. The overall quality of players across all PL teams is considerably closer across the board, the only difference is that the top 6 have higher quality in depth. There is a reason why teams like West Ham, Brighton, Villa and Newcastle are all competing in/winning European competitions now. Half of these PL sides would batter the mid table sides of the 2000s/2010s

Newcastle used to finish 3rd with Titus Bramble, Robbie Elliott, Aaron Hughes, Andy O'Brien, Olivier Bernard, Jermaine Jenas, Gary Speed, Kieran Dyer, Lua Lua, Darren Ambrose and Ameobi playing for them all the time. Only real good players were Given, Solano, Robert, Bellamy and Shearer. Wengers first title, Liverpool finished 3rd, this was Liverpools average starting XI: James; Babb, Matteo, Kvarme, Harkness; McManaman, Ince, Leonhardsen, Bjornebye; Fowler, Owen. 7 of that Liverpool team were mediocre at best and they used to finish 3rd, teams now have better teams and squads and can't get in the top 10.

My list: 1. Sir Alex 2. Wenger 3. Klopp 4. Pep 5. Mourinho Reasoning: Sir Alex is pretty obvious so I won't go too deep into it. But he's won by far the most PL titles. Put Man Utd back on the map and kept them at the top for over 20 years. Reinvented and rebuilt the squad after the 90s and built another squad that won 3 straight PL titles AND a UCL in 2008. Wenger and Klopp I put over Pep and Mourinho because they did simply didn't have the resources of Pep or Mourinho yet still revived 2 massive clubs. Context and resources matters. Wenger changed English football and football culture by making it more professional, doing away with the drinking, etc. His team played brilliant modern football that simply wasn't seen in England at the time. He started the first real wave of bringing in exotic foreign players. Yeah man Utd had Cantona who was the first, but Wenger did that with virtually half his squad which was unheard of at the time. He was also a master of unearthing talents and developing players from mere "talents" to genuine world beaters. Henry, Vieira, Cesc, RVP, Ashley Cole, Anelka, etc, etc. He won 3 league titles, 2 doubles and went one season undefeated. And throw in a UCL and Uefa Cup final for good measure. And as for Klopp being ahead of Pep and Mourinho it's down to the fact that he did more with less. What he did with and for Liverpool is more impressive than what Pep did with City or Mourinho with Chelsea. Again; CONTEXT MATTERS. Not every job is the same. Different clubs have different circumstances, different resources, etc. Klopp has revived not one but TWO historic clubs. BVB and Liverpool. You have to look at the club he inherited vs Pep or Mourinho and what he had to work with. He inherited a club which hadn't won the league title since 1990. A bang average squad full of players like Milner, Henderson, Andy Carrol, Lallana, Balotelli, Josue, etc. Milner and Henderson were considered finished or scrubs until Klopp revived their careers. He turned decent players like Salah, Firmino or Mane into world class players. He worked on a much smaller budget than Pep and with inferior talents. But yet he won a league title and probably should have won 2-3 because they approached the 100 point mark a couple of times and failed to win. And High 90s in points would be enough to win a league title in virtually every other season. He also made 3 UCL finals in his time with Liverpool (more than Man City) and he won 1 of those. The 2 times he lost was both to RM who are the most successful side of the 21 century in Europe winning 5 titles in less than a decade. Pep and Mourinho were fantastic and achieved a lot. No doubt about it... But Mourinho walked into a side which was the richest team in Europe at the time right after Abramovich took over. He spent record amount at the time to strengthen an already strong side which was runners up the prior season under Ranieri. Chelsea never played the sort of football that Arsenal, or Liverpool or Man Utd or Man City played under Sir Alex, Wenger, Klopp or Pep. They were great, but they were more a physically imposing side that bullied and pushed others around. A defensive side. This also happened at a time where Arsenal started to decline and had no money due to having to pay off their new stadium so Arsenal instead of strengthening or replacing world class players with equal quality players actually kept selling off their best players like Vieira, Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole. They never replaced those guys with equal quality. That's when they began their decline. And Man Utd was also in transition during those years with Ronaldo and Rooney being so young, midfield needing a freshening, etc. So there wasn't much genuine competition for that Chelsea side with all those resources. Once Man Utd rebuilt and started to reach a very high level again they overtook Chelsea and won 3 straight titles and Mourinho instead of fighting ran away to Italy to manage the best squad in Serie A at the time who had taken advantage of Calcioppolli destroying Juventus and Milan. Mourihno besides what he did at Porto ALWAYS went to the most talented squad in a given league who had the most resources at the time...Essentially, the team that was favorites to win anyways. He never revived any clubs like Sir Alex, Wenger or Klopp. He never developed players like they did which is a big part of being a world class coach. He was simply an opportunist who went to the most advantageous situations like at Chelsea or Inter and then RM with Ronaldo, Benzema, Kaka, etc. And this with Pep it's the same thing as Mourihno. But he achieved more in England and actually improves and develops young talents. But at City he was given a team which already won league titles. Best squad. Most money to spend for new players and any players he wants, so on and so forth. Again, it's the most advantageous position to be in as a coach. We've never seen whether Pep could revive a club and built it into a juggernaut. Like Wenger did at Arsenal, or Sir Alex or like Klopp has done numerous times. Those were extremely tough tasks and yet those guys did it with their genius. Pep has always worked with teams that were ALREADY juggernauts before he even arrived. The man's first job was being gifted that legendary Barca squad which featured Ronaldinho, prime Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Etoo, Henry, etc. A team which already won league titles and a UCL. Then right after that he took over Bayern who were just off the back of a treble! Then after Bayern the champions of England who had the best squad in EPL already AND unlimited resources. What I'm saying is PLENTY of managers could win and get massive results with the resources Pep has been given, But almost none can do what Sir Alex, Wenger or Klopp has done. And that for me is the biggest difference. I don't think Pep or Mourihno could have done at Dortmund or Liverpool what Klopp did. Or what Sir Alex did with Man Utd. Or what Wenger did for Arsenal.

If we're only talking Premier League it goes Fergie, Pep, Mourinho, Wenger, Ranieri. Fergie is obvious - two three in a rows, 13 titles overall. Pep has won 3 in a row, Mourinho has retained. Wenger never retained but won 3 titles and went unbeaten in one of those seasons while Ranieri only won one but did so at 5000-1 odds having saved Leicester from relegation the year before. Klopp was great for Liverpool in giving them their first title in 30 years but when you look at the Premier League era as a whole, frankly 1 title isn't enough of a return for Klopp's time at Liverpool. Obviously, I'm talking about PL only. If you include other trophies for overall rankings then you can have a conversation about putting Klopp in the top 5 but as a Premier League manager, Klopp is on the same tier as the other managers who won one title.

Klopp had to deal with 1 season of adversity last year and missed top 4. Meanwhile Wenger got top 4 for 20 straight years, with no money (all being paid to the stadium), losing his best players every year. Chamakh, Sanogo, Mustafi, starting for Arsenal. I don’t think any other manager can replicate that. And when he had a proper team, he won 2 doubles, an Invincible, formed the greatest PL rivalry, and the most exciting free flowing football the league has seen since. Wenger and Arsenal revolutionised football in the late 90s and and made the Premier League truly global in the early 2000s. Just because he was there for too long, shouldn’t hamper his ranking as a great. If he left in 2004, and managed 9 seasons for Arsenal (the exact same as Klopp), would he be ranked higher?

I think Adam nailed it on the head when it comes to Pep. Obviously he never has too now, hes an elite manager whos won it all, but hes never built a club,. He did his apprenticeship at Barca's youth team, hes then only managed the biggest teams in the biggest leagues, who can out spend opposition and had great players already there for him. If Fergie had joined in 92-94ish time having been the youth team manager we would be having a different conversation. But he didnt, and he has success at Aberdeen on his CV. Managers need good players, look at Jose's Porto side, but theres something about success at Porto and Aberdeen that just more impressive than at Bayern or CIty. Leicester winning the league is the greatest achievement of all time, they had Kane, Mahrez, the son of the greatest PL GK of all time between the sticks, its still the greatest achievement. Those who love Pep will say he doesnt need it, but for me, if he wants to be the greatest manager ever, not just PL, but of all time, in any league, its the one thing missing.

nah rory meat riding jose too hard with that 03-06 praise. you do realise pep guardiola's barcelona exists. added edit here, pep is definitely now head and shoulders clear of saf man. don't mean to mention them again but you've got to bare in mind, pep created the best football team ever and forever changed and transformed barcelona, the 2nd biggest football team in the world within a period of 4 years. it took farrrr longer for ferguson to do so at manchester united. if you want to compare them head-to-head, pep's best team played against ferguson's best team twice in the biggest matches possible. pep's best teams against ferguson's best teams, the result was that barcelona absolutely wiped the floor with manchester united in both games. its not just the quality of the players, in 07/08 united got past barcelona en route to the final. the very next season guardiola completely revamps the squad and playstyle, within 3-4 months everything clicks and we have the best team that has ever existed. the notion that he was given all the tools is a fallacy, in his first season the following leave: deco, zambrotta, lilian thuram retires, and ronaldinho. brought in dani alves, keita, pique, promoted busquets, thiago. he revolutionised the team within 1 transfer window and that can not be understated, in fact it is only overshadowed because we only remember how good that team was. it took ferguson what, 7-8 years to even win a league title? pep's only lost 3 league titles lmao. before coming to man city, he had reached 7 straight ucl semi finals. keep in mind ferguson only made 6 semi finals in his whole career. pep's first job was straight into the deep end unlike ferguson, ferguson was given so much more time with multiple occasions where he was bordering on a sacking at united. there have never even been mutters of pep being sacked in his entire career🤣, not even at fucking bayern munich where fans were on jupp heynckes back the same season they did a treble. putting accolades aside, guardiola has completely changed football globally and he does so rapidly in the premier league every season. the same way wenger is talked about for revolutionising football is taken and multiplied by 10 with pep, I for one really am not a fan of his influence on football since he got to bayern and now manchester city. to me there is very little to argue in fergie's favour. it feels like the messi vs ronaldo debate where there are individual statistics or attributes that ronaldo has over messi but in the vast majority of qualities what messi does is just surreal and makes it an unfair argument. it's not unfair now but by the time pep's career has finished it will almost mirror the dispute, pep is pep.

A problem I have with these when these are discussed is when questions are posed around "would this historic side beat this historic side". It's an impossible question, especially as the gap in years increases between teams. Football is ever evolving and improving, and that has only been encouraged, especially in England, with the commercialisation of the Premier League and the introduction of big money. It's hardly fair to compare older sides against the standards of more recent sides as they didn't have the same resources and understanding of the game that we have now.

Time is the only difference between Fergie and Pep. As a United fan what Fergie did was unrivaled. Several rebuilds, multiple changes to key personal and seamless transitions of the changes didn't effect results. Once Pep has done a minimum of 15 years you can start comparing what they have achieved. The other thing is Fergie oversaw a period where United were predominantly a British team with a few foreign players. He still was able to achieve success with this formula when Chelsea were playing 8-9 foreigners per game. He was still able to dominate a generation with still promoting local youth where other clubs just spent the money and bought ready made players. Two different generations but Pep has done incredibly well with a club that already had foundations in place and he came on and conducted the ingredients that were already there. Fergie grew the ingredients, harvested them, baked them and served them. Pep is just a master baker. 2 very different approaches and time will tell if Pep is in his class. It's a long time to win 13 league titles......

Clubs like Bayern, Man United, Barca, Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal, Ac, Inter, Juve were all built by exceptional people and players and it will always be more special and more accepted. Smaller clubs getting doped is not Robin Hood challenging elites, its systematic enrichment of rich businessmen buying in to football. Do one of these but for managers that haven't managed at a top 6 club. I think that would be super interesting.

Here's why Klopp is a better PREMIER LEAGUE manager than Wenger... *Proceeds to talk about non premier league trophies * 🤦‍♂️

People say Klopp has been working with so little. Arsene Wenger was working with even less. He consistently made money on players. His budget was less than Klopp because he was investing in the new stadium as well. Wenger doesnt get enough credit for doing it with a smaller budget as well as selling players at the right time. he got bags of money for good players at the right time. This is why Wenger is just ahea of klopp for me.

We should stop judging only by who won it. We should also consider who came very close. A manager who gets to the finals 3 times for example has more respect to he who only gets there once and wins but then never leaves the group stage after that.
