"Bro! What is going on in this music video!?" Is what we all said first time we watched it. If you continue down the Soundgarden rabbit hole I would suggest (if you haven't reacted to them yet), Rusty Cage, Outshined, Spoonman, and Fell On Black Days. All great songs with Chris Cornell singing his heart out in the earliest part of his career.
He didn't take his life. He was taken out. Was about to expose the pedo world with Chester Bennington. When his killer or killers have their judgment day with God. wish I could be there to witness it! RIP Chris. Gone way too soon!!
They want you to think those artists took their own lives. Wasn't he and that other guy in to wanting to do something about child trafficking ??? Hmm?????
@donaldshrader4612 yes, Chris and Chester Bennington were working on a documentary about child trafficking. Those involved were not going to let that happen! RIP Chris and Chester.
RIP Chris. One of a kind. Amazing voice and writer. Chris has said that the song came while driving home and hearing something about a black hole sun by the reporter. He didn't hear the rest of the story, just that line and he put it together. A song he has said is just a put together with words and phrases he thought sounded good together, almost as if the listener is supposed to figure out a meaning for it for themselves. Chris was an interesting cat. As many genius artists are. You don't always know what or why they do what they do.
Fell on Black Days is one of the greatest Soundgarden songs! Even beyond that, its personally one of my favorite songs of all time both lyrically and sonically from any artist ... period.
this song has a special place in my heart. it was what i was listening to when i realized i had a drug problem 25 year ago. i still remember that night vividly. i was way too under the influence, flipping through a book of aliens in fiction, this song was playing in the background, and i started staring at the wall, hallucinating, felt sick to my stomach and ran to the bathroom to go throw up. i remember hugging the toilet, slipping in and out of consciousness, worried i was going to die. for me, this song was the first step in my sobriety.
Another prophetic thing is the album art to this album looks eerily like the first photo of a black hole 25 years later. Check it out. Soundgarden is tapped in, I tell ya.
It's great watching you discover Chris Cornell... lots of depth, lots of great music to enjoy. My favorite voice. The world feels diminished without him in it.
The first thing I ever heard from Chris and I was hooked… thought he would always be around… probably one of the best voices we have ever been so lucky to have graced planet…Earth not the same without Chris….🌎🌍🌏
U really can't go wrong with anything that Chris Cornell touches!! He definitely sits at the very top of my list of favorite male vocalists! This man is deeply missed!
Huge hit single in 1994 w/ a creepy music video... and cryptic lyrics. That was 'Black hole Sun' by Soundgarden... It was about Cornell wishing for the end of the world around him... or the end of everything. He wrote a similar song w/ Soundgarden - 'Blow up the outside world'... Chris Cornell had a history of struggling w/ depression (and drugs)... Quite a few of his lyrics are real dark and ominous... it was clear now, knowing how he died in 2017, that he was clearly struggling and considering the end of his life w/ songs like 'Pretty noose' ... 'The day I tried to live' ... 'Like suicide' ... 'Fell on black days' ... by Soundgarden 🤘🤘🔥🔥 One of the standout solo songs by Chris Cornell was "Can't change me"... from 2000. It was about how a woman he was close to has a profound effect on everyone around her, but she can't seem to make a difference w/ him. Soundgarden was the Seattle band that Chris Cornell formed around 1984 and soon rounded up the line-up w/ Kim Thayil (lead guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Hiro Yamamoto (bass)... They became a major attraction in the Seattle underground scene and debuted w/ 2 EP's and the album 'Ultramega OK' in 1988... and then signed w/ a major label A&M Records, releasing 'Louder than love' in 1989 before bassist Hiro Yamamoto left the band; he was replaced in 1990 by Ben Shepherd (bass) 1991 was a pivotal year for the Seattle rock scene - Alice in Chains had debuted w/ 'Facelift' in 1990... Pearl Jam recorded and released their debut album 'Ten'... And Nirvana broke the scene into commercial success w/ their 2nd album 'Nevermind'... Chris Cornell had released 2 albums that year - Temple of the Dog (as a tribute to his late friend Andrew Wood) and Soundgarden's album 'Badmotorfinger'... By 1992, both Temple of the Dog and the 'Badmotorfinger' album had sold platinum in the USA and Soundgarden was actively touring into 1993. After the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in 1994, the Seattle scene was starting to implode w/ Pearl Jam disappearing from public view and Alice in Chains slowly retreating from view as well... But Soundgarden released their biggest record 'Superunknown' in '94 and it was a massive hit on MTV and radio w/ 4 music videos and sold 6x platinum. In 1996, Soundgarden returned w/ the album 'Down on the upside'... it sold platinum, but the band was not functioning optimally on tour and while touring on the record, live appearances were reportedly so bad that being on tour was unsustainable. In 1997, Soundgarden shocked everyone by announcing their split. Soundgarden finally reunited in 2012 and recorded a comeback album 'King animal'... and were working on a new album by 2017. However, the same issues that broke up the band seemed to dog Soundgarden by that year... After a particularly bad Soundgarden show in 2017, Chris Cornell was apparently distraught while on the phone w/ his wife and abruptly hung up... When security went to check on Chris Cornell a while later, he had barricaded himself in his hotel room... They eventually found him dead from suicide 😪 Chris Cornell joined an ominous list of 90's rockers that passed away too soon... from Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Layne Staley and bassist Mike Starr of Alice in Chains... Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots... Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees... bassist Kristen Pfaff of Hole ... Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon... Bradley Nowell of Sublime ... Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone ... Dolores O' Riordan of The Cranberries... etc.
I can’t speak on all the songs listed but “Like Suicide” tells a story about a bird which flew into a glass door and was wounded and he had to choose to let it suffer or put it out of misery.
Some of the things chris himself said about this song was, that he was just "playing with words for words sake", "guess it worked for a lot of People but I have no idea how you'd begin to taken that one litteraly" and "i sure didnt have an understanding of it I was just sucked in by the music and tried to paint a picture with the lyrics’ there was no real idea to get across" Also according to the band the video was entirely the directors idea, and at that point the only thing they wanted to do in videos was pretend to play and not look to excited about it.
The entire summer of 1994 I could not get this song out of my head! Probably my favorite Soundgarden track is Blow Up the Outside World. I also love Burden in My Hand.
Thanks for reacting to another classic. NGL, Chris Cornell and Maynard James Kennan helped me pull myself out of my suicidal drinking lifestyle... mostly all of Audioslave's music and the album "The Thirteenth Step" by A Perfect Circle. My drinking should have killed me, and quitting cold turkey was supposed to! Just hit 42 this month and feelin' GOOD! MUCH Love fam!
A lot of Chris's lyrics have a prophetic edge to them. A lot of fans think the song Limo Wreck was prophetic of the bombing of the twin towers. Im looking forward to you exploring more songs from my favorite band. ❤
I still want to see the...proof?...files?...on who was jiggling away their body fat. It honestly seems so stupid that if was introduced today it would be endorsed by Kim Kardashian on insta.
NIce reaction, I saw a nice interview with Chris about 10 years ago. He said he wrote this song in about 2 hrs while driving home from a gig. Wrote the music and lyrics in his head and when he got home he sang it into a recorder in case he was too high to remember. But said he did remember every note the next morning. Just an amazing talent.
He explains how this song came to him while driving (lyrics, arrangement, everything as we hear it) in an interview on Howard Stern. Then goes straight into an awesome acoustic performance of the song. Rock God!
There's another band Chris Cornell was a part of you may want to check out. That group is Temple of the Dog. It was formed after the death of Chris's friend Andrew Wood, who was the singer of the band Mother Love Bone, and featured two members of Mother Love Bone. They recorded one album, which had a popular single "Hunger Strike", which featured guest vocalist Eddie Vedder. Most of the members of Temple of the Dog besides Chris were, at the time, forming what would become Pearl Jam.
written by Chris Cornell, has a layered and open-ended meaning that invites various interpretations. It explores themes of disillusionment, concealed darkness, and the quest for individual liberation. Rusty Cage, Spoonman are great Soundgarden songs! Chris Cornell then was with Audioslave, songs include I Am the Highway, Like A Stone. Check them out! Amazing!
From Chris Cornell by way of wikipedia.. " "I wrote it in my head driving home from Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, a 35-40 minute drive from Seattle. It sparked from something a news anchor said on TV and I heard wrong. I heard 'blah blah blah black hole sun blah blah blah'. I thought that would make an amazing song title, but what would it sound like? It all came together, pretty much the whole arrangement including the guitar solo that's played beneath the riff. I spent a lot of time spinning those melodies in my head so I wouldn't forget them. I got home and whistled it into a Dictaphone. The next day I brought it into the real world, assigning a couple of key changes in the verse to make the melodies more interesting. Then I wrote the lyrics and that was similar, a stream of consciousness based on the feeling I got from the chorus and title" " - " "It's just sort of a surreal dreamscape, a weird, play-with-the-title kind of song" " - " "Lyrically it's probably the closest to me just playing with words for words' sake, of anything I've written. I guess it worked for a lot of people who heard it, but I have no idea how you'd begin to take that one literally." " - - Which is all rather strange considering it seemed pretty obvious even at the time {I turned 18 in December 94} and absolutely certain now that this was a call for the World to End! Chris Cornell was 29 when Superunknown was released and probably 28 when he wrote Black Hole Sun, he grew up in the 70s and 80s turning 16 in 1980 and 26 in 1990. The video is clearly a play on ostensibly right of centre suburban christian and jewish americans of the 70s and 80s believing that life was a utopia whilst early members of suburban generation x like Chris grew up not knowing their place in that fake world. - Generation X were born as of 1964 so yes Chris Cornell was Generation X - Boomers were 46-63, Gen X 64-81, Millennials 82-99, Gen Z 00-17, Alphas 18-35. Jan 1 46 to Dec 31 63 is 18 years - A Generation Jan 1 00 to Dec 31 17 in 18 years - It may look like 17 but you're counting the full year of 2000 and the full year of 2017.
RIP Chris, remember going to his best friend's house and I mention to my little Sister in law that my Ex-Husband (now) was super hype to be jamming with Chris Cornell...and she was hype... saying you know he is a big deal this is 2000... as an Island Girl didn't know who he was but he was a sweetheart... of course later on I come to love his music and especially AudioSlave...
I loving listening to you try to interpret the lyrics, like we all did 30 years ago. I remember watching a video where someone asked him what was the song about. Now, he could have been completely messing with the asker, but he said it means nothing. They tried to pick the most bizarre phrases and threw the lyrics together. I couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or that’s really what they did. He just got real quiet after that and kind of bowed out of the conversation. Either way, I love it, and respect it. Miss him so much, still.
4:07 Your look of dismay! 😂 Enjoyed watching your range of facial reactions throughout. But thank you for staying the course and not being distracted by the video … good thoughts.
it's that kind of voice that we can call as THE voice in music, he can song classic shit like that or angrier song like "Let it drown" in the same album
Chris Cornell was one of the greatest grunge rock vocalists of all times. I am still amazed at his vocal range and sheer power. My favorite Soundgarden song is Fell on Black Days. You should check out his super group Temple of the Dog and the song Hunger Strike wth guest vocalist Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. What a collaboration!
I’m 36 when I was young me and my sister were scared of this music video…I liked the scare and love this channel thanks for watching all diff kinds of music🎉
I'm 61 and been stuck in the 70's and 80's music. My grandson is 16 and has introduced me to this genre of music. He'll say, you gotta listen to this. Thank you BP for doing the blind reactions, I've even started liking some country songs because of you!! God bless you!!❤
Chris's voice was so powerful that Michael Beinhorn, the producer of the album Superunknown said Chris managed to fry 5 Neumann U 87 mics while making the album. Each mic retails at around $6000.
Of the meaning behind the song's lyrics, Cornell has said, “It's just sort of a surreal dreamscape, a weird, play-with-the-title kind of song. Cornell added, “lyrically it's probably the closest to me just playing with words for words' sake, of anything I've written.Jun 28, 2022
Found your channel about 3 hours ago and I’ve gotta say I’m digging it . Love the reaction videos from 60s 70s 80s and 90s … what a great time I had the pleasure of living . Best music era of all time . Nowadays you may get lucky to find a few artist , but back then there were 100s and 100s of amazing songs and bands ..
Here you go and thank you! Rapper FIRST time REACTION to Chris Cornell - "Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince Cover)! BRUH!!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yTov1s4AK_g.html
He is just absolutely humble when he sings live or in studio, he just sings with joy, heart and emotion and is truly humble at how great he actually is!! And yes they are still touring, just hit Saskatoon, Saskatchewan about 2 weeks ago, as a nurse doing shift work couldn’t attend 😢
Now if you are going down the grunge rabbit hole, check out Chloe dancer- crown of thorns by Mother love bone. They were one of the original ones. Andrew Wood was amazing, after his death, the group temple of the dog was formed to pay tribute to him.
Chris wrote about death a lot. If in doubt, it’s probably about that. Except for “Spoonman”. That one’s actually about a guy they met playing spoons on the streets. He’s in the video and they took him with them on tour for a while.
When I was younger, I used to get Soundgarden and Savage Garden confused, maybe because of their names and sounds. I mean, you would expect with a name like Savage Garden they would sound like Soundgarden did, and vice versa....
Chris Cornell. Chester Bennington. And Anthony Bordane. We're making a documentary called the silent children. A movie trying to take down the child trafficking. Then they all hung themselves. Coincidence?
I love seeing you react to all the 90s music I loved as a teenager. Kind of asking these same lines...you have to check out Collective Soul. I love"December" by them. But they were super popular in this same time frame.
Seasons is another great song its one of his mellow songs. Every song on BadmotorFinger from Soundgarden is fantastic. I truly love all his acoustic songs and videos. Especially live. I cried so hard when he died. He left the world with incredible music. He is truly missed in the music world.
What’s up from Denver, Colorado! Sound Garden wasn’t ahead of it’s time…they were right on time with us 20 year olds back in 1993-1997 grunge era (kids-young adults)
Perhaps you could react to Prince's cover of "Play that funky music white boy/Inglewood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage". Prince's live performances were epic.
Wikipedia-Chris Cornell said I wrote it in my head driving home from Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, a 35-40 minute drive from Seattle. Chris Cornell is absolutely one of the best male vocalists of all time. You should also check out Soundgarden "Fell on Black Days". I'd like to see your reaction to Temple of the Dog "Say Hello 2 Heaven" live. Chris' vocals are insane in that one. He has been a part of many bands and did some amazing work solo. ❤
He wrote this song after he heard a report on the radio and actually misheard what the person was saying. He "thought" he heard them say Black Hole Sun and then he just went with it and wrote the lyrics from there. Chris Cornell joints you should DEFININTELY react to: Hunger Strike; #1 Zero; Like Suicide; Outshined. Burden In My Hand; & I Am the Highway
Ya,thats what everyone thought the first time we watched this video too!!! 😂😂😂I recommend Rusty Cage,Outshined,& most other songs...spoon man is a trippy video as well.😂chris actually had an AWESOME vocal range and tone...he was an incredible singer.🎶❤✌
Such a classic. I was around 13 years old when i first heard this. One of the biggest influences on my music tastes. This album is awesome. Spoonman, fell on black days, at my picks for next songs.
I did a comparative paper on this song and the book Pedro Paramo. 2 different languages but the exact same imagery. Cornell is quoted as saying he wrote this song after seeing the moon rock Seatle used to have. The song is more of a reflection of that experience.
