Want to learn more about the powerful benefits of autophagy? Check out my blog! www.naomiwhittel.com/benefits...
On a recent trip to Japan, I was fortunate enough to have met and interviewed some very interesting individuals, each of whom will be highlighted in upcoming videos. I spoke to an award-winning scientist on his studies on the incredible effects of hydrogen on the human body, as well as visiting a hydrogen spa and partaking in their hydrogen facial! I also met a beauty expert who imparted so much fascinating knowledge that us westerners simply aren’t aware of that contribute toward their amazing youthful appearance and glowing skin. And in my spare time I simply soaked in the amazing culture, which, as a wellness explorer, and being ever curious, allowed me a glimpse into Japan’s goldmine of fascinating information with regards to health, nutrition, and longevity. I had a camera in tow, so expect to see a lot of content coming soon!
However, of all the wonderful and insightful experiences I had during my trip, none were quite as overwhelming and memorable as my interview with the renowned, Nobel prize-winning (2016) scientist, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, an expert on autophagy, for which his studies and findings won him many awards worldwide, as well as the coveted Nobel Prize, and shed light on new areas of fasting and autophagy.
Autophagy is a word which many of you have heard but for those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it literally translates as self-eating, coming from the Greek words: auto - self, and phagy - to eat. You may have heard me mention the word while talking about fasting, a subject that fascinates me endlessly, and of which I am a strong proponent. In fact, my first book, Glow15, was written on the subject. However, do not fear, self-eating doesn’t mean cannibalization! It is a miraculous a natural process in the body whereby our bodies will literally eat our toxic cells, resulting in cellular recycling, which can, among many other things, help prevent chronic illness. It is also a complete body detox and of course works against the aging process by “eating” or degrading damaged organelles, cell membranes and proteins. When autophagy slows or does not function properly, it is thought to be one of the main reasons for the accumulation of damaged cells and aging. It is a science that does not cease to amaze me. And, as Dr. Ohsumi says himself: in his 30 years of study on the subject and to date, we only understand about 30% of the science and miracle of autophagy.
Being a very private and introverted individual, I was deeply honored to have been granted access to Dr. Ohsumi’s laboratory at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and to sit and chat with him about his studies. This rare opportunity was truly an honor and one of his first filmed interviews since winning the Nobel prize in 2016. Dr. Ohsumi is a gentleman, and the epitome of Japanese politeness and humility, as well as being a very soft spoken, modest individual.
I hope the information in this video inspires you to learn more on the subject of fasting and autophagy. It is an area we will be devoting a lot of time to and exploring within this channel, so if you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe to receive notifications on upcoming videos. I would also encourage you to check out some of our other existing videos on fasting. To learn more about Dr. Ohsumi himself and his work, you can visit the following links.

Yes, born 1945 world war ii was over. In japan really hard time to get food. Mom got TB and she stayed in bed for a long time - really hard time to get enough food. That time all people were poor in Japan. Everyone overcome those problems. Yes, i know about Noble prize. I was not so healthy boy, dream was to become a scientist. My father was working at the University. Not so far from University. I wanted to be a scientist. One point, I didn’t want to be in a competitive field. When i started in vacole not many people were working on that subject. That was very good for me. I wasn’t confident and not many people were working in that field. I might not do it now as many people are working on autophagy. Okay, for me i want to understand how cell is dynamic. Actually life is adjustable ..... not so many people interested in degradation. lots of people work on ... not so many on the degradation. Degradation is important. The function of the degradation process. For me, degradation must be equally important. Function of the degradation process. Almost every function of the body has degradation . Important for me autophagy so important for the cell. We only know 30% understanding of autophagy and been working on it 30 years. Autophagy is not so long history. That’s my feeling on autophagy I always showed the slide how the body makes 200 grams protein a day. But we take 70-80 grams from food. Two figures tells us that new protein comes .... important to understand. So ya, for me surprising fact all protein is replaced every two or 3 months. All protein in body replaced. Life is maintained. These days, many many casts or company or newspapers sold many people ... already 3-4 years situation happen for me. So noisy. Hard to say, several people say you will have this in 2-3 years. I not think about that. Took 3 years to publish paper. I wanted to publish 2 papers but not a good way. Took a long time for me. Something new , take that long. Probably as i said autophagy so basic a function of the cell to understand the cell or our body. Autophagy must be involved in many things. Autophagy is involved in so mnay things. Reason my work autophagy in yeast cells.... dissect yeast .... most important cell first genes. Understand autophagy. Autophagy genes in plants and showed ... not so easy to analyze... still difficult... ag genes... research you can analyze autophagy by ag genes. Completely changed research all over the world. Everyone started studying autophagy. Finding the discovery of the ag genes most important. Sorry. Hum. Still okay. Many people interested in autophagy for disease and health problems. I think it is quite reasonable. Degredation is important. Cells should be maintained clean. Very important for our cells. Autophagy one function is recycle cell... eliminates harmful material in the cell. Those kind must be very important to cells and diseases. Still don’t have special medicine to regulate autophagy but might be New science. Probably not familiar. Hum. Okay. For me, so hum. What should I say. Yeah, of course we have many serious problems. Each people have their own serious problems... important... learn a lot how our body working . How whole body is organized. Yeast cell is simple one cell. Still we have many problems to solve. Every cell has a different function. Important to know how cell communication with each other. Every cell has its autophagy function. Own cell autophagy might be the problem. How different cells have different function. Important....some simple... autophagy might not help some people’s health. We need more work on autophagy how it’s regulation in every cell in our body. Okay. I am already quite old. I don’t know how long i will continue my work. I want to have a really good measuring.... what is degradation and how much extent autophagy does in that cell. I want to have biochemistry to just use yeast cell. Improve our knowledge of how it works in Our body *********************I missed a little but maybe it will help you understand better what he is saying ************He discovered at least 15 genes involved with controlling autophagy in the yeast cell.

I watched this twice, second time with closed captioning, which was a huge help. This was a very important interview from a great man, and I wanted to understand and soak in everything he said. His quote at the end says it all about him and his accomplishments, something we can all learn from if we want to achieve any level of greatness in our lives. After achieving the highest honor in his field, this is his response, that all that has done was to open so many more questions. Words to live by. What an incredible man. For his achievements he is very humble because his focus is on his work, not himself. This was much more than an interview on the authority on autophagy. This was what greatness truly is, something we can all learn from. Thank you so very much for this interview and video.

Well, provided your body has enough fat to burn and is mobilizing it in a rate sufficient for not cutting into useful protein. Meaning you get into ketosis, and it is just a matter of time if all you're consuming is water and perhaps an autophagy activator like coffee (just an example, and one shouldn't drown oneself in coffee to fast successfully ^^). In anorexics for instance it's observed that even the heart is broken down for protein for survival! But that's from starvation, and not healthy fasting with proper healthy refeeding. So if you get into a proper fasted state, with sufficient mobilized body-fat, minimal amounts of useful protein is broken down. There are ketogenic researchers who's observed that protein is being burned regardlessly if your body is mobilizing sufficient fat, and concludes that water-fasting is not so good for maintaining muscle, and are more in favor of maintaining a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. But that's rather simplistic, and I trust that the body is maintaining the useful tissues when there's less useful stuff to break down. And now there's emerging things like the fasting mimicking diet, that's been shown to be pretty much equally effective and in some cases more effective than water fasting, and glucosamine has been observed to activate autophagy more than water fasting as well. But these studies are in mice, and they aren't really suited to ketosis or water fasting like people. As they will lose a huge amount of their body-mass in just a few days, whereas humans can much more effectively maintain their body-composition during water-fasting. So this is a very exciting field! though I'm not even in it, I'm just reading up on the latest stuff on the net ^^ And practicing it with great results in health and well-being. And I think extended fasting is great for mental health as well!

Please note: Dr Ohsumi is a scientist. His work and that of his team that won a Nobel prize, was their identification of genes which made it easier to study autophagy. As of this interview he stated they understood about 30% of autophagy IN YEAST (30 years of work). Mammalian cells (that’s us) are more complex. In this video there was no mention of fasting or a specific diet. No mention was made of any specific way to enhance human autophagy or even if that was desirable. There was mention that in future, it may be possible to develop medication that would control the autophagy processes. Research continues….

Two thousand five hundred years ago, the Buddha, experimented with different life styles. Born into royality, he led a luxurious life, but was disillusoned by the suffering of the poor as well as that of the wealthy who suffered because of over indulgence. He thus advcated the middle path, refraining fom starvation , as well as from gluttony, by eating once a day before noon. A pratice that is followed by countless buddhist monks , at the present.

This is how you realize how your BODY IS MORE POWERFUL than you can imagine (not only your Thoughts!)! There is an enzyme in our body that can minimize aging, and is harnessed through the correct meditation and energy exercise (yoga? qi gong?...who knows!). We will wait for the next nobel prize winner to discover this! ;)

21:12: Aww, I think he would have been quite excited to hear more about it, and would probably have some interesting comments on it, if you could have gone into it a bit more. But keeping it on a broad level was probably the best choice. As it's an interview, and not a "reviewing science of autophagy with the initiator of the research on it" -- though that's something that'd be really exciting for me in any case! ^^ 26:45: It's amazing and great that he's still excited to do more of the basic and very essential research of improving the methodology of studying autophagy! Thank you Naomi for conducting this lovely interview! He's such a patient and humble man!

In India, we have been following fasting methods for thousands of years... But because of religious reasons. In our ancient religious books/ literature/ Vedas, the long water fastings have been given lots of importance. Every where it is mentioned that in a healthy body lives a healthy mind. So when you sit for meditation ( which is way to feel/ meet/ sense the GOD), first you cure/ purifie your body with fasting, so that you could sit easily and concentrate / meditate. I think they entangled fasting with religion so that people would follow it for the sake of GOD if not otherwise.

Agree. Religion, when used wisely by very ethical, honorable, discerning leaders, is ultimately beneficial for its practitioners. Monks and nuns have also practiced fasting and meditation in the form of prayers & vigils. What Dr Osumi has learned and expounded on is the scientific basis for these practices. Oftentimes our "modern" minds scoff at something we don't understand and discard traditional knowledge as ancient balderdash until we see the validity of it with our own eyes.

Totally agree. The ancient epic Mahabharata say: it was by fasts the deities have succeeded in becoming denizens of heaven. It is by fast that the Rish have attained high success. Chyavana, Jamadagni, Vasishtha, Gautama and Brigu - all these great Rishis endued with the virtue of forgiveness have attained to heaven through observance of fasts. In former days Angirasa declared so unto the great Rishis. The man who teaches another the merit of fasts has never to suffer any kind of misery. The one who daily reads this ordinances (about fast), or hears them becomes freed from sins of every kind

When I look closely at the radiance of this man, I almost forget that aging is something negative. But my question is: To what extent could autophagy support or eliminate one of the seven points that make up the Aubrey de Gray theory (intracellurar junk)? Does autophagy also clean the collected garbage outside the cell? This last question seems to me to be of central importance for the appearance of a human being (speaks beauty of the skin).

@@naomiwhittel so, is he saying that we have a long way to know exactly the mechanism by which some or all cells behave or degrade. That is, will long term fasting necessarily protect all or some cells or does it really depend on which part of the body the cells are located.

I read a lot of comments about how much of a genius he is, and while that may be true I’m more interested in what people are taking away from his work in practical day to day applications. 1. That protein synthesis comes from autophagy of our own protein cells. Therefore we must replace that protein through diet, not just for muscle growth but for all the bodies processes that require protein. 2. The way our body synthesizes protein is also the reason why we lose muscle mass if we don’t get enough protein in our diet, as well as poor health due to the organs cell requirements.
