Today the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced a new $75 Raspberry Pi 4 8GB model, and to go along with that huge increase in RAM, they're releasing a new 64-bit Operating System, and changing the name from 'Raspbian' to 'Raspberry Pi OS.'
I'll share my first experiences with the 64-bit OS in this video.

@@KingJellyfishII More memory is not just about running heavy applications or opening more tabs in Chromium. For me, the main advantage of having more memory is that it will be used to cache disks. This is done automatically in Linux (see the 'Cached' line in /proc/meminfo). Anyone using a RPi as a fileserver or as a webserver will directly benefit from it and that should also make the desktop more reactive (especially when using an SD card).

The initial specification was higher, and the rate of advance is far, far faster than the PC managed, and in turn that was faster than the rate of advance of the old proprietary mainframes and minis. Of course each of those generations leveraged off the previous one. The price/performance is now incredible.

Love your videos. Could really get your thoughts on installing elasticsearch on the k3s cluster. Maybe it'll have to wait until you get some beefier nodes with more memory. I have 4 RPi4s clustered similarly to your Dramble but I couldn't find an elegant way of deploying elasticsearch to them. I ended up installing the jdk less version and then running the services with systemd. Thoughts?

Definitely have to use larger memory Pis for that; the 4 GB Pi 4 would be a minimum level of RAM per instance; Elasticsearch eats RAM for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The truth is most people get the "64-bit" OS thing wrong. It's not just about addressable memory. In CPU architecture the bit size of the processor refers to the size of the "datapath" or ALU/Execution unit. This means a 64bit machine can work with 64bit data types natively. If you are using binaries that are 64bit this can be a meaningful increase in performance. Especially in cases where the application wants to use 64bit datatypes. Just having the wider instructions available can be a significant improvement. I know that modern scripting languages tend to lean towards 64 bit datatypes so the programmers don't have to worry about precision or overflow errors. Since Linux is more or less lives and dies by scripts it can make a difference.

@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 4 года назад
For pure CPU-intense operations (like FFT, most crypto, etc.), the extra registers and memory address space is a benefit. For other operations, it's not as much a help, and in fact for smaller applications or things not needing a full 64-bits of address space it usually performs around the same but requires a little more total memory consumption (on servers with less than 512 MB of RAM this can be a real issue-and I know this because I still run a number of tiny 128 MB VPSes for servercheck.in/ ;) ).
@Knirin

I don’t know about the differences between 32 and 64 bit ARM processors but back when AMD first released the 64bit x86 extensions there was a noticeable 10% performance increase on the same hardware for running in 64bit mode.
@az09letters92
@az09letters92 4 года назад
@@JeffGeerling More registers also helps compiler optimizations like inlining, no need to spill intermediaries to the stack. Or can keep more constants loaded, useful on an architecture without generic immediate instruction arguments. It makes it also easier to avoid those false register dependencies, that register renaming doesn't catch. Aarch64 supports also NEON SIMD operations with 64-bit floats, which *do* happen outside CPU intensive code paths, much like SSE2 on x86. All in all, it's not as clear cut as you said. Just take a look at compiler output, and you shall be enlightened. :-) (Note: On AMD64 you can always compile things with "x32" ABI (64-bit, but with 32-bit pointers) to get benefit of 64-bit features like more registers without paying for a larger pointer size. Similar trick could also be used on Aarch64.)
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 4 года назад
@@az09letters92 While true, the sad fact of the matter is much of the software we use on a daily basis is not as optimized for particular architectures and/or processor-specific features as they could be to be way faster. So often, performance limiting factors are more related to memory utilization (at least in my experiencing mostly working with web apps and dynamic/scripting languages like Python, PHP, Node.js and Ruby. In the end, I would recommend using a 64-bit arch with as much RAM as you can get, so you can get the best of both worlds and never be memory-constrained (which is usually the major problem I encounter on slow-ish ARM boards like the Raspberry Pi).

How would be the performance of this version for making a laptop to run web navigation (multiple tabs) and office in a school administration? Or the 4gb would be enough for that?
@JeffGeerling
@JeffGeerling 4 года назад
4 GB would be enough for very light browsing. But nowadays, especially if you are a tab-heavy user, it's best to have as much RAM as possible. The 8 GB Pi does general computing very well, though it's a little slower than most low-end laptops and desktops. If it had a fast built-in eMMC or NVMe slot it would basically be my dream tiny PC! (external USB drives are a bit sloppy compared to an NUC IMO)

Unfortunately, no, it's `arm64`, meaning it can run 64-bit software that's compiled for ARM (in the past it was just arm, or armv7, which was 32-bit ARM). So docker-machine, which relies on something like VirtualBox, can't be run on the Pi. But docker itself runs just fine, and is quite speedy for many use cases.

@@manuell3505 The 64 bits Arm can execute 32 bit applications (assuming of course that the proper 32bit libraries are installed) so I expect that switching to RPiOS 64 should be relatively transparent. That should work pretty much like on Debian amd64 where i386 libraries and application can be installed in parallel with 64bit ones. However, if by transparent you mean auto-detection of the hardware then I am afraid that the ARM architecture is not as good as the Intel architecture where most peripherals are now auto-detected. So far, the best alternative is the so-called Device Trees ( elinux.org/Device_Tree_Reference ) which is an hardware description of each machine (see the .dtb file in /boot). In practice, that means that a generic ARM Linux distribution would have to include a dtb file for every possible ARM system ... probably feasible but not really flexible.

Yes and no... you can get the 'IoT' version of Windows 10 running (see www.windowslatest.com/2020/02/09/heres-how-windows-10-runs-on-raspberry-pi-4-and-3/), but you can't run the normal Windows 10 you might be used to and all the software that works with it since it doesn't run on ARM processors.

Depends on what you're doing with the CPU and the RAM. Some workloads are heavy on RAM and light on CPU, or need as much as possible of both. For example, launch Google Chrome, and it eats up all available RAM immediately, even if it's only using like 2% of your CPU :D

its not as big a deal as you think. after 2 years, we still have no hardware acceleration for video decoding for the pi 4 /// and it has also had hardware support for vulcan for 2 years as well. in other words, a massive performance gain can be had in gpu performance , as well as things like youtube and video playback, maybe even basic editing, but because after 2 years they dont make it priority, they dont follow through, they dont devolop these drivers to take advantage of the hardware ... oh but after 2 + years, here is this 8gb model.... it is as useless as the 4gb model if you ask me. ( i mean obviously there is a niche crowd that can use it, things like pi clusters / servers / mining etc ) but for the rest of us waiting on a cheap desktop replacement ,, well probly see the pi 5 release before we see drivers that unlock the pi 4s potential. im very disappointed . on the other hand, odroid c4 is one month old, has quad channel memmory much faster than pi 4, better gpu , faster cpu, has hardware accelerated video for either android or ubunutu,, full support for android 10, ( plays many android games nice ) has full ubuntu support and support for retropie. only downside is you need a usb dongle for wifi / bt. but,, on my pi 4, none of the os,s i like have had working 3.5 audio for headphones, so i have to use a usb dongle for that. ( another frustrating thing with pi., i cant even use the 3.5 jack on any os i like its useless, they could have saved money not including it ) and btw the odroid is cheaper than the pi in some places. i would rather a 4gb odroid with working drivers, hardware accelerated video, and real android support, over a pi 8gb without any of those features.

No! That should not matter in most cpu benchmarks and in that case the test was not performed on the new 8GB Pi4. The reason is simply that AArch64 is a newer and so better instruction set than AArch32. The most obvious difference is that AArch32 provides 16 general-purpose 32-bit registers while AArch64 has 31 general-purpose 64-bit registers. AArch64 also has new SIMD instructions (i.e. vectors) that can boost the performances for programs than can make use of them. In fact, I am a bit disappointed by the 12% improvement shown here for a FFT CPU benchmark which should benefit a lot from AArch64. My guess is that the compiler (gcc? clang?) cannot handle AArch64 efficiently. This is a relatively new architecture so performances will hopefully improve.

its all worthless, ( almost ill elaborate ) my pi 4 4gb for 2 years now has never been starved for ram. in fact, even in my tests where i tried doing so much at once, it still never even used the swap file ( i disabled the swap file for this reason ) . maybe youll use the 8gb model as a server, or in a cluster, or for mining etc, where thats the only example i can think of where the 8gb becomes useful. im mostly disappointed, that for 2 years i have waited on drivers that support hardware acceleration for video decoding / you tubes and movies. so ,, after 2+ years, they give us this 8gb model, which still has no hardware support for video acceleration. even in any business model i dont think it made sense bringing this to market. we didnt need an 8gb pi ( well ok maybe a very niche crowd of you can use it ) what we needed is , some better drivers and hardware accelerated video for the device that you have already had out for 2+ years. im very frustrated , i mean odroid comes out with the c4, its a month old , has much better ram ( quad channel 4gb vs pi 4 single channel 4gb / 8gb - both are single channel units ) ,, has a better gpu, out of the box has a faster cpu ( pi 4 can overclock yes, but still is gimped by single channel architecture) ,, and this thing, that 1 month old, has full android 10 support with working drivers and video acceleration, support for ubuntu and retropie , and is the same price as a pi 4 4gb. yes youll need a wifi bt dongle., but on my pi 4, i need a dongle for usb headphones, as every os ( except raspbian ) the 3.5 jack does not work. i think this 8gb model is useless in comparison for a 4gb unit, to those looking for a home media center / retro gaming setup or cheap desktop replacement , which any including this new 8gb model all fail at because they wont give us drivers for hardware accelerated video ( you cant watch movies or youtubes etc ) -- even the glorious 8gb of single channel and a 64 bit os, wont help you watch movies, wont help you watch youtubes. wont help with games ( raspbian already had support for arm 64 - tho since it only had 4gb 32 bit made sense -- yes 64 bit / 8gb can address more ram, but none of the current operating systems will need to do so,, at least for most users, i dont know maybe they are hoping for Microsoft to give them a reverse handie , offer up arm 64 / 64bit , with hardware acceleration for the pi 4 8gb . yea that would get me excited. too bad pi 5 will be out before it happens . i have waited over 2 years to enjoy simple things like you tubes and movies on my pi 4. im tossing my pi4 in the trash soon , and trying out something, anything else on the market so long as it has hardware acceleration for videos. i mean anything. who knows maybe theyll offer up a 12gb version soon, with full vulcan support, then theyll sit on it for 2 years without devoloping software or drivers to support it. i mean that feels like the current business model for the pi 4 4gb. the market is looking for a cheap desktop replacement, and they would have hit that mark if they just gave us some good drives. imagine a video card coming out, nvidia or ati, and for 2 years, they dont release a single driver to support hardware acceleration. then they come out with some new model with more memory ..... you still have not gave us working drivers for the 4gb unit, after 2 years, and here you are making new hardware, when we are starving for software? im done ill buy an odroid.
