The off-road review of the 2020 Rav4 TRD Off-Road. Similar to the Chevy Blazer the Rav4 has an optional dual clutch rear axle. It is a very capable vehicle and with a few changes and a low range transfer case Toyota could make Rav4 TRD Pro that would compete with the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk.
Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.

@@EngineAdventures I have felt a difference when using some momentum. If I were to leave it on D it will switch to second gear too fast. @Dave Allen I never leave first gear on my articulation or steep climb tests anyway, so that doesn't make a difference. When I'm going through mud or sand I will often do that, or when I'm carrying speed up a hill. In this case I'm trying to push the traction control to it's limits so I'm not helping it with momentum.

just wanted to say thank you for the awesome video! I have watched 10+ videos for this car and they have been useless. This was a great video! That would be great if you could do a road test for us to and the amount of road noise you get (or if you could respond to my comment). I test drove a 2018 "adventure" model and surprisingly was super noisy and had excessive road noise. how is this one compared to other toyotas which are famous for being very quiet.
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and for the support. I'm just going off of memory, but I believe it was just a little bit louder than the other Rav4's I've tested. I've been in a 2019 Hybrid and the 2020 Prime (video will be coming in a few weeks on that one), and they were both a little quieter than this one is. I wasn't bothered by the noise, but I suggest testing driving one at as high a speed as you will regularly cruise to see if it's too much for your comfort level. I doubt it will be though.
@MBR4740
@MBR4740 4 года назад
Question: I have a 2019 RAV4 Adventure. In your test, you experienced the RAV4 lacking low-end torque to sufficiently tackle the steep hill. (The 8 speed transmission lacks a “L” gear). Do you think one could use the manual-mode shifter, gear down to 2nd or 1st, or would it still tap out? (RPM limits not withstanding).
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 4 года назад
It wouldn't make a difference. The transmission is in first gear for all of the traction testing as I don't get enough speed for it to leave first gear. I have tried putting vehicles into 1st gear but it's never made a difference. There are times where I will do that, like deep snow, mud, and sand, to keep the engine at higher RPM's. It's just not necessary for these tests though.

@EngineAdventures 4 года назад
This is more of an all weather vehicle than an off-roader. The Bronco will definitely be more capable off-road, but the system in the Blazer is still really good.
@DrivenHard
@DrivenHard 4 года назад
Wait I'm confused here. The system was having a hard time transferring power side to side in most cases. Like during the first mud/sand mode, yes you want wheel slip but the system should have been able to tell the 2 wheels are slipping while the others are stationary, which means there is no forward momentum. Greta video though, love when ppl show these types of clips. Definitely stealing this format for my channel 🙌
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 4 года назад
I've been dreading this question because I don't know the answer. I climbed underneath it and verified that there are two clutch packs on the rear. It should basically be able to lock the rear wheels together and lock the center differential (there isn't a traditional center diff, it is another clutch pack), which means at least 3 wheels should be spinning before the brake system even kicks in. In mud and sand mode I don't ever want the brakes to come in or the throttle to be cut, it did that part well, but it seemed like it couldn't quite get the power side to side on the rear. My best guess is that the clutch packs just can't handle the amount of torque needed to act as a locked differential. I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this.

@ 9:43 I see the rear-right wheel spinning despite it being off the ground. Is this because of the clutch slippage you were talking about, or some limitations in their AWD system as a whole (or...something entirely different?). Side note, have you tried the Honda Passport Elite? Subscribed BTW!
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 3 года назад
Thanks for subscribing! Similar to other vehicles with a dual clutch system for the rear differential, this one can't lock the clutches hard enough to truly act like a liked differential, so the clutches were slipping. That's why that wheel was spinning so much. As for the Passport, I tested one before I started doing videos and this test hill so I can't say for sure how it would do, but I do know I was getting one rear wheel to spin without being able to climb a steep hill.

is the clutch pack what limits its ability to "overheat" for extended use vs a true 4x4 or part time 4wd?
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 4 года назад
In this case I believe yes. All the alert said was something like "AWD overheating reverting to 2WD mode". There are certainly clutch packs that can handle these loads, but I imagine Toyota used a smaller light weight system to save weight and improve economy. GM trucks with auto 4WD use a clutch system and in testing the Trail Boss under heavier loads (testing recovery ropes) it never seemed to slip or overheat.
@appleman812
@appleman812 4 года назад
Engine Adventures ah ok thanks. Yeah I guess Toyota didn’t expect people to abuse the AWD system and built it for “light” off-roaring where ass the TrailBoss has a heavy duty clutch pack system to withstand the beating.

I moved from the 4Runner to the RAV4 TRD Off-Road. Had 2 Xterras, and a 1st Gen 4Runner prior...a comment from one of the developers set my expectations: This isn't a TRD Pro and we don't expect to see one in the RAV4 line. I appreciate the video very much, I do a fair amount of off-pavement and that's what this trim will handle. I won't be able to do about 10% of what I encountered before...it's important to expect what it CAN do well. The Jeep Cherokee wasn't a contender because of the comparably low fit, finish, build quality and long term reliability. If you're like me and hate any kind of reliability issues, the RAV is for you...a locker and L range would be nice...but not at the expense of what else it does well. Also: this thing rallies in the dirt and gravel like a champ. Take it fast in dirt sweepers and you see where the suspension shines.

Awesome purchase! I really enjoyed the RAV4, but I must have been on bad roads that it doesn't like. I agree on owning a reliable car as your main vehicle. @EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures 4 года назад
Tires would make a difference, but better tires likely wouldn't have helped it make that climb. My tests focus on the ability of the vehicle to transfer power to the wheels that have traction. On very steep climbs with two wheels in the air the Rav4 just doesn't have enough torque to brake the spinning wheels while sending power to the ones with traction. It's hard to show how steep this hill is, but I've had another vehicle that couldn't climb it from a stop even with all 4 wheels having traction. It's steep enough that vehicles with low torque, high gearing, and CVT's struggle.

In some vehicles it does, in others it doesn't. I believe the power transfer in the RAV is less aggressive because the engine doesn't have much torque. Watch my offroad video of the Sequoia. We just bought the adventure trim Rav4. Basically the TRD without the suspension bits (which imo don't change enough to justify the TRD price) and the badge. Neither of them have skid plates. But a 2.5" lift for these is only $300 and we had a fiat 500x crossover with a 4" lift and M/Ts and let me tell you, offroading in a tiny crossover is so much more fun. Hard to get stuck because they don't weigh much, and everyone has to ask about it that you run into on trails. I took that little fiat down trails that Wranglers wouldn't take, and it was a blast. Best thing about the new Rav4 is the fact that instead of using a cheap brake-bias system to send power to individual rear wheels, it uses a full mechanical AWD system. So far, I love our RAV4. I can't wait to test it out. Plus, the interior color with the orange stitching and trump pieces looks awesome

A lot of what Rav4 is, is hype and advertising. You would think no one ever thought of off road mild use b4 the Rav4 TRD came along. Check autotraders for a used one, 10-20k miles on a vehicle like this is just like throwing a cup of coffee on it to get it going. The Adventures are going for sweet prices. And its also fuel injected as well. But get the 2019 newer platform. No I'm not an expert, just researching for myself as well.

@@EngineAdventures The Adventure has the exact same AWD system as the TRD so should do the same. Based on your video and others I have watched about this new torque vectoring system, I think it is not a very good system and no improvement over the less-advanced system in the lower trim levels. Maybe even worse since the less-advanced system shifts power to BOTH rear wheels at the same time (without 2 clutches back there). This convinces me to get the lower trim and not pay for this "advanced" AWD system on the Adventure and TRD trims. Better to get the 17-inch wheels on those and put on some nice BF Goodrich BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 LT245/65R17 to get 1/2-inch more ground clearance and way better traction. What do you think?
@EngineAdventures
@EngineAdventures Год назад
In most cases off-road, larger tires are better. Essentially a larger tire reduces the approach angle of the tire over an obstacle. Of course it is all within reason, you have to have the torque to power them and the brakes to stop them. As far as the AWD systems go I'm not which would be better. For example the Chevy Blazer RS has enough torque and pressure on the clutches to be very capable off-road. This system however lacks. Your assumption of the lower one working just as well if not better might be correct, but I can't confirm that one way or the other.
@glow4417
@glow4417 Год назад
@@jackplasticy3775 Your assumption is wrong. Because the regular rav4 AWD system cannot pass a three wheel roller slip test. So by default, there is no way the regular AWD system by Toyota is better than their torque vectoring system. In comparion, Subaru's system is less advanced as well, because all Subaru's will get stuck on roller's in a three wheel slip test, those system's don't have true torque vectoring. Even watching this channel, check the Subaru Outback on the same hill, it's not able to make it up. But, roller test shows that Toyota's system is working as intended. Although, more power and better approach and departure angles would help.

If depends on how rough you want to get. If you're on decently maintained dirt roads the XSE will do fine. The TRD had a little better capability, but much better suspension for long term rough road driving. I'm not denying the effectiveness of more aggressive tires when off-roading. What AWD will outperform the Rav offroad? The Range Rover Evoque. Seriously. We have soft roader days and we take them all off road. The Evoque wins every time. I kid you not. Something you said in your video, (amongst other factors) might explain why. The Rav lacks power. To overcome the way an AWD system works and the braking of the spinning wheel, and still have enough power to send across, an AWD vehicle requires lots of power in the absence of low range. With about 180KW of power and tons of torque in the petrol Evoque, and the legendary Terrain Response system, having big wheels on all 4 corners, the Prestige model Evoque (that stands higher) and comes with 19" wheels instead of 20", rules the roost when it comes to AWD vehicles. The Forrester, Freelander2 and XC60 is also good. The Grand Vitara is very capable, but a bit low, (but has low range, so not really a softroader anyways.) On my testing tires aren't the focus and done matter that much. Of you have two tires essentially in the air it doesn't matter how good they are. What matters is the ability of the vehicle to get torque to the ground with the tires that do have traction. Brake based traction systems require a lot of torque to transfer power, where limited slip and locking differentials don't.

That's not the case on many vehicles. If you disable traction control it also disables the brake based limited slip system. That does allow you to rev the engine more, but sends all the power to the wheels that are in the air and not the ones with traction. It is also vehicle dependent, in Nissan 4x4s the brake based limited slip is still active with traction control off, so in that vehicle it helps. Having the right tires for the terrain is very important, but in this case it's not about the tires. The vehicle has to be able to transfer torque to the wheels with traction, which is what this test is about. Doesn't matter how sticky your tires are if they are spinning in the air.
