A review of the RazoRock Wunderbar slant razor and three different Lucky Tiger products: the face wash, the liquid shaving cream, and the aftershave splash.

RazoRock Wunderbar Slant DE razor
Gillette Silver Blue blade (second or third use)
Lucky Tiger Liquid Shaving Cream
Lucky Tiger Aftershave Splash
Synthetic knot brush
** Intro music **
I was sad for a moment to hear of Florence Henderson's passing, but I remain overjoyed that Parov Stelar is still alive and kicking (at least I hope he is!). Thus we stick with his ode to "Staying Alive", namely "Spygame".

I missed the premier by 4 years Michael, but I still very much appreciate the reviews. Lucky Tiger is great, and I’ve enjoyed the full range of their shave and facial moisturizing products. I’ve ordered an Ikon X3 head after watching another of your videos. Thanks!

The lucky tiger shaving cream seems a fun product to brake the routine of hard soaps/crops/conventional lathering creams (all excellent) of wet shaving. Maybe I will try it in the future. Useful review👍

It's a surprisingly good product, actually; not a top tier shaving product, but very usable with a great scent and easy to work with!

Good review, Michael. I am one of those people that owns and loves the Wunderbar. I do have a heavier beard than you for sure and I use it every day. As you discussed, I find light pressure is key and good protective, slick soap works really well with this. The first time I used the Wunderbar, I said "ah ha!" and never missed a day since then. For me, a great daily shaver with much less irritation than the other "milder" razors I had previously.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
+Marc Girard perfect fit, as I would expect! Really happy to hear it is working for you, and while I got a very close shave today, I just can't see using the Wunderbar every day. It does teach you to keep a light touch :-)

I used this bad boy on my head and it does a fantastic job but it is not a fast shaver. Care is required or it will bite. Low pressure is definitely key advice! Nice shave! Huge fan of lucky tiger tonic... Will give the cream a go one day.

Great video Michael.. in regards to Lucky Tiger as a staple in Wet Shaving Dens; you normally (now 'days) see the original aftershave tonic in high visibility, and that's about it. I shave an elderly gentleman named Charlie every weekend (he very ill) and Charlie is 84 yrs old. Awesome guy. We talk about barbershops from back in his day (30's 40's) and he has actually mentioned to me that a full range of Lucky Tiger products were the go-to accoutrements in those days in the barbershop scene. He said he loved getting shaved with Lucky Tiger products or getting topped off with Lucky Tiger products after a haircut. You've inspired me to try the shave soap. ;-)
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
+TONE Scott it may well be a familiar scent then, and I hope you enjoy it! Sounds like Charlie might appreciate some of that aftershave as a special treat! What do you use to shave him?
@TONEScott
@TONEScott 7 лет назад
+Michael Freedberg I often use the original Lucky Tiger to finish him off (as far as lotions or tonics go) before I finish with a balm. I normally always first use an alcohol based AS as an astringent and then a toner over that, and then finish with a balm whether it's me or someone else. As far as what I use to shave him in general, Charlie literally gets a different shave every week. I use DE razors only (no SE or straight razors on him as small parts of his face are very tender due to his illness). Some of the razors that work well for him are my Rockwell (#4 plate), 1959 Gillette Fat Handle adjustable, Matador 'El Gordo Negro #3', Muhle R89 Twist, Merkur 23c Long Handle, IKON #101, Wolfman WR1/H7, Edwin Jager D89, and my Mergress short handle, amongst a few others. I also have a play list of songs from the 30's, 40's and 50's that we play during his shave time.

Great Lucky Tiger Review! My bottle will be delivering tomorrow! Face lathering seems to be gaining in popularity & I'll face lather when using stick soaps. Otherwise, half the fun is lathering up in a bowl. The "No Pressure" comment is applicable to, and already understood by vintage razor shavers. Nevertheless, it is critical advice for those switching over from cartridge razor shaving, where pressure is needed for a good shave.

Very accurate rview. I used mine for a week and not a single shave was weeper free on and around my chin area, where I could not negotiate a better angle. Its a great shaver if you can adapt to it especially the way it needs to be moved and negotiated around the face contours. Be lazy and it will punish you !

Indeed, you really need to pay attention with this razor. Certainly can give you great shaves but at a price: you cannot shave carelessly or you will suffer nicks or cuts. I do think RazoRock did a great job on the overall design and machining, but I too would have preferred a little less efficiency in favor of better comfort and "safety".

Michael Freedberg Today had a third shave with the wunderbar.. Third day on middle of the line super max platinum plus blade. I decided to use a Godrej shave round today. Almost a century old recipe when straight shaving was a norm, the Godrej shave round lather is a bit coarse and dense and provides great cushion for aggressive razors. Wow! I was right, a wonderful and smooth shave. WTG, XTG and ATG on the sensitive neck area. Try a godrej shave round with this razor. Also want to take the time to thank you for the excellent shave videos you put out. Reviews are always extremely informative and all the talk gives a lot of insights on the products. Have a great new year and keep those wonderful shave videos coming!! Especially on those RR products, I am a great fan of RR products and Italian Barber, keep buying most of their stuff.

Thank You very much Michael for another great video. I am thinking of buying a slant. would You think that a slant is a good choice for someone relatively new to wet shaving like me or should I stick to a regular DE shaver for now and if a slant which would be milder ,ikon, maggard or merkur? and how would You compare for instance open comb to slant in regards to agressivnes. Many thanks Michael. I appreciate Your great videos and advice always. chris

Oh definitely... goes without saying, there are some razors which are perhaps too efficient for daily shaves...other than one being able to grow a ZZTOP-band member facial hair growth in 24 hours. This particular razor Michael strikes me as your long-weekend (Friday-Monday) without shaving category of use. After such a lapse, it'll be at its optimum use. I noticed the razor has no overhang, and the chrome finish is quite eye catching. Good shaving tool by all accounts. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for reviewing RazoRock's Wunderbar razor and Lucky Tiger products. You might have been reminded of Tiger Balm products. Some of their products have high percentages of menthol and camphor. Thankfully they don't offer shaving products! Do you have a favorite soap with lots of 'residual slickness'?
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
+borbetomagus a couple come to mind. The Sudsy Soapery soaps were very good, the I Coloniali was also very good in this regard, the Haslinger also top notch, as were some of the milk based soaps I tried. Maybe I should take better notes!

Thanks for your insights on that slanted, one of the best slanted in my den and I do own several including ikon merkur att and others. My humble opinion is that your putting too much repetitions or passes while you shave to your skin and that's why you get those little cuts, just try to pass the blade to your skin once on every pass you will see the difference. Truly urs... j
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
+john Luevano I normally never get cuts, even if I buff like crazy, but something about talking while shaving and keeping an eye on the time and remembering to look into the camera...Well, it is just easier to nick yourself! The Wunderbar generally seems more prone to nicks than other slants because of the more pronounced twist and blade exposure. The more passes or strokes with this razor, the higher the risk, I totally agree with you.

Another enjoyable video Michael. Just out of interest, do you prefer the Lucky Tiger or the Myrsol cream?
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
+Bruno Bolanti The Lucky Tiger is easier to lather and is pretty slick, but the Myrsol is slicker and more moisturizing... But harder to lather. For ease of use, the Lucky Tiger; for a better shave, I think the Myrsol. Tough call.

Great video on this Slant! I've been wanting to try one but it's a little above my budget just for a "try". I have the Maggard Razors Slant & the RazoRock German 37 Torsionshobel Slant & really like both of those. Since finding out that I like slants I might invest in a Wünderbar! BTW, did you ever get the RR German 37 Torsionshobel Slant on loan? If not let me know & I can send you mine. I live towards Asheboro, home of the world's largest zoo & the geographic center of this great state!

Pete, I never got the German 37 on loan, but that is fine - I still have a number of razors in the queue, and thank you for the very kind offer! The Wunderbar is an expensive bet, and for some just a bit too much. The Maggard Slant is really quite good and if you are liking that, I would just stick with it and save your money for more "software". Are you interested in attending an NC Wetshavers meet-up in late June, in Raleigh? If so, let me know and I can send you the Facebook page info!

Michael, great impartial review again. Can you speak to your thoughts on the Wunderbar versus the Baby Smooth in terms of "mild vs. aggressive," efficiency, over-all build, and any other comments you might have comparing these? To me, the Wunderbar looks like a twisted (slant) version of the Baby Smooth... how similar are they, really? Your thoughts are appreciated!
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
The Baby Smooth is really what the name says: *very* comfortable and smooth shave, efficient, and really feels safe in use. The extent to which the blade has been curved, and the control over the blade edge combine to make this really an excellent razor. Build quality is good to very good. The Wunderbar is the Stealth Slant but more extreme: more "naked" blade feel while shaving, comfortable but it takes work, almost overly efficient, and can easily lead to razor burn or nicks. The Wunderbar is machined to very tight tolerances and is gorgeous, but for me the choice is a simple one: I would choose the Baby Smooth without a moment's hesitation. The Wunderbar is not just a slanted version of the Baby Smooth, the head geometries and overall feel of the shave are quite different.

That exact spot on the right side of my neck is also irritation prone. I can shave the rest of my face, well, basically everything. How a razor shaves that part of my neck is usually the deal breaker/maker for me.

Michael Freedberg I have similar issues with the "Torsionshobel" German 37. There is only one orientation of slant/twist, but most of us have mirror-image growth patterns. It leads to non-mirror shaving patterns for me.

hi Michael, you are good at making these videoes. If you compare the color of your skin at the start of the video (2 minutes in) with the color seen after the final rinse (25 minutes) in - to me it looks like the soap or the preshave product have left something there which makes you look quite pale. Could it be some lanolin or zink like ingredient?
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
+MrUlski no lanolin, but there is something a bit slippery in that aftershave... Feels like glycerin and that may make my skin seem a bit shiny (or pale).

Michael you make great videos and detailed reviews, but why dont you shave when you have a few days more growth? I was watching your video of the stealth slant in which you tryed ways to shave to cause irritation because your opinion of the razor was so great. I have very sensitive skin but not a coarse beard at all and I can shave again after having irritation and have 3 days growth which is not much hair for me but I will have considerably less irritation then if I gave my face 2 weeks off and shaved with the same razor, blades etc. It seems when you shave you give the easy job to the razor. Just my 2 cents and I do think your a great asett to the wet shaving youtube review community but why not make the razor work for it? Keep up the good work with your videos.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
Interesting question! The answer is really very simple: I shave every day for work. If I had to have more than two days of growth, I would have to go work unshaven and *that*, my friend, is not going to happen :-) I am not sure I really understand the point of "making the razor work for it" when most of my shaves are every day or at most over the weekend. Shaving off two weeks of growth is great fun, don't get me wrong, but it does not really tell you much about the razor's comfort and efficacy for daily shaving. If you DO want to see 30 days of growth go with a single stroke, go check out my Movember video - my mustache is gone in seconds.

Do you have a dense, thick beard that grows quickly? Do other razors struggle to give you a close shave? Are you careful about very light pressure and no rushing? If yes to all of this, then go for it! Just be aware that this razor does tend to be a bit harsh and sometimes unforgiving, and that other very experienced shavers never really got the shaves they wanted. It may well work perfectly for you, and if not, you should have no trouble re-selling it. What are you using now?
