RB30 Budget Build - Bottom end | PART 3

OMG Finally!!! I have been waiting for this video for forever. Welcome back.

Man, this video couldn't have come at a better time for. Long story short, due to some small oversights that took place well before i took ownership of my car, it turns out my 25 crank has a flogged out keyway from a loose harmonic balancer. :( So ive used this opportunity to shelve the block and achieve a long time goal of building a 25/30 with a spare motor i had in storage. I haven't gone quite to the extent of what you guys have gone to, but i have tried to spend money in the right places to achieve my power/application goal reliably. Bottom end is completely standard RB30, measured up within specs, no weird obvious wear etc. Ive fitted a nitto crank collar (with the chamfer), brand new N1 oil pump with Golebys billet gears, as both spare pumps i had were scratched up. I gave the bores a quick hone with the toilet brush and cleaned the block/crank galleries as much as i could without removing the plugs. Bearings are ACL race which sit around the 2-2.5tho clearance on the rods/mains and my end float is around 4-6tho. I did almost get caught out by the girdle moving position! Now the only thing that has me terrified is that ive used OEM RB26 piston rings on RB30 pistons. The research i did came to the conclusion that the RB26 rings are identical in dimensions to RB30, just the end gap changes. But now im paranoid as fuck, especially since the head is now on the engine! If Darren has a set of both there, can he please put them side by side and compare?

Saving up for an rb25 S2 here in the states but it's so hard to find one. Plus rn apparently I can mate my cd009 to my ka24de and the RB25 in the future same trans. Idk I'm trying to figure everything out tho. Wish I could get my car on the road but finding someone for rust repair is tough

Awesome video and loving all the build tips from Darren! Have a question though - Your block has 5 thou float clearance which worked out well but what would you do if you wanted more float like 8 or 9 thou? Darren spoke briefly about using a soft hammer on the ends so can he explain that in a bit more detail please? Thanks

I’ve got spool rods for my build and I was told by a pretty reputable company not to use them and I asked why and they couldn’t really tell me, other then they just didn’t like them.... and I’ve hunted for failed video or manufacture issue over the web and couldn’t find anything

Can you please ask Darren if using a cometic gasket and a set of studs and the things starts drinking coolant and creating milky oil is it normally a cracked head or do the multi layer gaskets still fail, I’m running about 20 psi and looking to get 500rw hp, thanks heaps and love the content cheers
