Another great reaction from you. Fun bit of trivia about this film, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) was REALLY excited that Sirius Black was going to be portrayed by Gary Oldman, and the reason is because Dan has stated before this film that Gary Oldman is actually his personal idol as an actor.

The director said this in an interview about the Dumbledore change “It is slightly different. From the get-go we made changes to give the continuity, but at the same time it was not about imitating Richard Harris. That would be so bad for both: for Richard and for Michael. Richard was very regal - as Dumbledore is described in the books - and very beautiful, and we wanted to do it more hippyish, cheekier and a little more shabby. And sometimes more distracted.

The third movie is when the franchise moved on from Chris Columbus as director (the guy that directed the Home Alone movies). The darker & more mature themes will become more common throughout the rest of the series.

It’s funny, I’ve always thought Prisoner of Azkaban was way darker than the Goblet of Fire. Sure Goblet of Fire was more violent, but the overall tone was kind of sillier and seemed less mature in my opinion

There was actually more to it than Peter Pettigrew could turn into a rat and Sirius (actually Peter) told Voldemort where the Potters were. If you hadn't read the book, here's the story. Remus Lupin was already a werewolf when he came to Hogwarts. Dumbledore had the shack and the tunnel that led to the shack made so Remus would be isolated from the other students during the full moon. Also the Whomping Willow was planted there to prevent students from going into the tunnel. Remus kept his lycanthropy a secret because werewolves are highly frowned upon in wizard society, but James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew figured it out and became animagi to keep him company during the full moon, because animals are immune to werewolf bites. James could turn into a stag, Sirius a dog, and Peter a rat. This was how they got their nicknames Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs, the makers of the Marauders' Map. During their time at Hogwarts, Snape tried very hard to get James and his friends expelled and thought he found his chance when he saw Remus heading to the tunnel underneath the Willow and Sirius told Snape how to immobilize the Willow because he thought it would be funny if he met Remus as a werewolf. Snape says that James was in on the joke and got cold feet at the last minute, Remus claims that James knew nothing about it until the last minute. James got Snape out before Remus could do anything and Dumbledore made Snape promise not to tell anyone. Also, to Snape's displeasure, he now owed his life to his most hated enemy. After they graduated and James married Lily, they found out that Voldemort was after them and were put under a Fidelious Charm, which kept anyone from finding them as long as the Secret Keeper didn't reveal the secret information. Sirius Black was chosen to be the Secret Keeper, but at the last minute he suggested Peter Pettigrew instead of him, believing Voldemort would not think to go after Peter. But Peter had been a spy for Voldemort for some time and revealed their location to him. Sirius realized what happened and went to warn James, but it was too late. Harry survived and Hagrid got him out of the house, and Sirius asked to take Harry, but Hagrid told him that Dumbledore ordered him to take Harry to his aunt and uncle's. So Sirius gave Hagrid his flying motorcycle and instead went after Peter. Feeling cornered, Peter blew up a street and killed 13 muggles before cutting off his finger and turning into a rat to convince everyone that he was dead. Peter hid from both the Ministry to avoid Azkaban and from the Death Eaters because they thought he sent Voldemort to his death.

17:10 - No, this is not in the books and was added in the movies to make Snape more likeable (I assume). Book Snape and movie Snape are different characters, so I can understand why so many people claim to love Snape, but the real Snape from the books is not loveable at all (as a character yes, as a person no). 20:56 - They do tell him in the books, and probably offscreen in the move too, at least I hope lol :) Alright, bit of a story time (spoiler free) One huge thing from the prisoner of azkaban that was completely cut from the movie is the story of the Marauders, the people who drew/created the Marauders map. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. They are the 4 friends from Hogwarts. Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black and James Potter. It all starts with Lupin, as a child he was bitten by a werewolf named "Fenrir Greyback", and was cursed for the rest of his life. Him and his parents both feared that he would not get accepted into Hogwarts due to there not being any cures or methods to help prevent the effects of being a werewolf, and nobody would want their child to share their school with a werewolf. But then Dumbledore became headmaster, and out of the kindness of his heart he decided to take on Lupin anyway, as long as they could work out some safety precautions. They created a safe space for him to transform into, which became the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade, and with the help of the hogwarts ghosts they spread the rumors that it was terribly haunted, so when Lupin transformed in there and started howling, the people of hogsmeade believed that it was simply just ghosts. They created a secret passage way from Hogwarts to the shack, and planted the Whomping Willow over the entrance to guard it from other students getting in. Lupin arrived at Hogwarts and made friends who were unaware of his problem, and he tried to live as normal a life as he could, but in constant terror that they would find out what he was and abandon him. But as he kept disappearing every single month, they eventually figured it out. But instead of abandoning Lupin, they did something else. They illegally became animaguses, which means they can turn themselves into an animal of choice (like how Professor McGonnagal can turn into a cat). This meant the world for Lupin, because he was truly accepted for being what he was, and as the friends were turned into animals, he posed no threat for them and they could keep him company during his horrible werewolf nights, which helped tremendously. They made up nicknames for themselves, Lupin being moony, Pettigrew turned into a rat and they called him Wormtail, Sirius the big black dog "Padfoot", and finally James Potter who turned himself into a stag "Prongs". However, they eventually decided to get a bit... adventurous. They would exit the shrieking shack and sneak around hogwarts with a live werewolf among them. Sirius and James were big and strong animals, and could hold the werewolf down if needed, and they hid under James' invisibility cloak (the one Harry has now). During the nighttimes they explored Hogwarts better than any other student had ever done, and created the Marauders Map. In the later years, a brew was invented that upon consumption, a werewolf wouldn't lose his mind when he turned. So during his teaching year, Lupin would drink the elixir at each fullmoon which made him still turn into a werewolf, but he could hide harmless in his office during it. One night by the end of the year, he studies the Marauders Map which he confiscated from Harry and notices Peter Pettigrew with them, and suddenly Sirius Blacks name aswell. He leaves the map in his office and runs towards the shack, as he sees Sirus dragging Wormtail and Ron into there. Snape arrives in his office with the elixir for Lupin (Snape brews it every month as he's the potions master) and he spots the map, noticing Lupin chasing after them into the shack.

I think you need some context for Snape being Neville’s worst fear. In the films, Snape is just kind of a stern teacher. In the books, he’s an UNBELIEVABLE asshole who is insanely petty and cruel, mercilessly bullying his students to the point of abuse. He actually poisoned Neville’s toad and forced him to make an antidote to cure the toad, which Hermione helped him with, and then when the antidote worked, he punished them. Also, when Snape is doing the werewolf lesson in the film, him calling Hermione a know-it-all is played for a bit of a joke. In the book, every person in the room is outraged at Snape for saying it. Hermione nearly bursts into tears, and Ron shouts at him for his hypocrisy, which gets him a harsh detention. Fuck Snape. Biggest dick on earth.

Snape was mostly an asshole to Harry, although it was clear he had no use for Neville. At this time the poor boy was still tripping over his own feet, and Snape despised incompetents. Snape never poisoned the toad, but he did threaten to dose the creature with a potion that Neville mucked up. Snape loathed Harry for reasons we will discover in later books. Those reasons go very far in helping understand his character's motivations. That's not to say Snape wasn't a dick, but the way he was treated in school himself has much to do with that.

I think Richard Harris was a much more convincing Dumbledore. He had the look of being kind and gentle, but very wise. In the scene with the boggart, I wondered why Remus would be afraid of a full moon when he stepped in front of Harry after the dementor appeared. Nice bit of foreshadowing since we later learn Remus is a werewolf.

•You may also notice that Films 3-8 have a darker tone, which I think works better for the more action oriented moments later in the series. •I don't care who you are, you call out someone's mama, you deserve what you get. •I would tell you why people are afraid of saying his name, but it would spoil the later films. •"Double double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble." - I sang a version of this in Middle School choir and when the teacher asked us if we knew where it was from, a student actually said the Harry Potter books because of its use in the film. Another student and I corrected said Shakespeare's Macbeth. •Malfoy, shut your trap, you twit. You got hurt for not paying attention to your professor and being rude, not for heroism in battle. •I believe the late Alan Rickman actually did have to dress as Neville's grandmother. •The Divination Professor may be cooky, but she has her moments. She is the one who foretold the prophecy regarding Harry Potter. •So everyone thought that Sirius was the secret keeper for the Potters because of the friendship between James and Sirius. It was Sirius who thought to secretly make Peter Petigrew the actual secret keeper because for him to be it would have been too obvious. Unfortunately, Peter was a coward and sold them out and Sirius was blamed for it. •Even Snape is human. It is the most adult reaction to danger to throw yourself in front of the children. It's also a sign of Snape's real role, but I have said too much already. •Did she just call Hermione the Queen of Narnia? •Harry's great patrons = best scene of the film. I have spoken. •The Blacks are a very prominent and wealthy family.

About you question on Dubledore, apparently it is not permitted by law for actors and movie makers to replicate the exact looking of another actor playing the same role. One reason is this. Others can be that the mood of this movie is quite different from the previous, and also the actor Michael Gambon, which I really like as Dumbledore, would have given his own touch to the character.

Saying the name doesn’t necessarily give him power. Rather the belief in him gives him power so people just try not to talk about him or mention his name. Later movies show that when you say his name he can find you wherever you are. Almost like putting the ring on in LOR

I get being upset by people tripping in movies, _except when they’re running through terrain that can easily trip them. Like a forest._ With roots and plants and rocks and uneven ground. People trip on less uneven terrain all the time in real life, a lot of the time just walking. How does frantically running for your life through rough terrain make you less likely to trip?
@erikperhs_

Ok, but they NEVER trip in normal circumstances, so it just feels like an easy way of making us anxious
@jonmercano1138
@jonmercano1138 3 года назад
@@erikperhs_ Well to be annoyed by the trope is understandable. It’s when they act like the character chose to trip that’s annoying. “Really? You’re gonna trip now? You have to trip now?” Treating tripping as if it were competely voluntary on the character’s part.

4:27 it is widely believed and used in numerous story lines that when you speak the name of an evil wizard you draw his eye upon you, as chances are they have loosed a name spell to locate and identify those who speak his name aloud. . convenient way to locate your enemy.

It's also possible the new actor playing Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) had a slightly different take on the character. As for Voldemort's name, it's a very old tradition in fantasy tales to not speak a powerful mage's name. One explanation that just saying his or her name will attract their attention.

The Book the Prisoner of Azkaban explains the Whomping Willow. When Remus Lupin and Sirius Black and James Potter went to Hogwarts the Whomping Willow was planted to guard the entrance to a tunnel leading to the Shreiking Shack. The shrieking coming from the Shrieking Shake was actually Remus Lupin (Mooney) the werewolf howling away the full moon nights in isolation. There is an enchanted knot on the Whomping Willow that freezes it so it is possible to access the tunnel. Remember when Professor McGonagall transformed to and from a cat in the first movie? James Potter could transform into a stag (Prongs) and Sirius can transform into a big black dog (Padfoot). That's how Sirius escaped Azkaban. He transformed into Padfoot and simply walked out the front door right under the noses of the Dementors.

The reason they changed Dumbledore was purely motivated by ego: Alfonso Cuaron changed the entire visual world from the school robes to the castle, along with inserting pointless sequences instead of covering important information such as the Marauders. As for changing Dumbledore, the people on set would tell Michael Gambon, “but Richard would do this,” and he would be like, “Well, I’m not Richard!” Prisoner of Azkaban is my least favorite because it is ground zero for everything wrong with the later films.

And second thing: if Harry had in fact emancipated himself, no one would have had to sign any slips for him because he would have been treated like an adult. That's what emancipation means. But Dumbledore would never allow this: it's explained in the books why he insisted Harry returned to Dursleys after 3rd year.

The reason why Dumbledore was so different was because the actor, Michael Gambon didn't want to copy Richard Hariss's work but put his owns spin on the character. Goes to show how much influence casting has.

I have no doubt Alan Rickman (May he rest in peace), who played Professor Snape, did indeed dress as Neville's grandma. Not only a brilliant and imminently professional actor, he most definitely also had a charming sense of humor. You might enjoy to watch him in some comedic roles, such as in "Galaxy Quest" and "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

About Harry's temper ... He was born on July 31st, so his zodiac sign is Leo. Leos have a certain temper. Believe me, I know :o). But as they get older, they calm down a notch or two. At least it was like that for me. And then I discovered that I am a picture perfect fire dragon in Chinese astrology ... Yikes!
