"Ron Artest ain't walking through that door!!! Chris Mullins ain't walking through that door!!! Jayson Williams ain't walking through that door!!! Malik Sealy ain't walking through that door!!!"
I have been preaching this for yrs. Those scholarships are 1yr and having a child who plays at the collegiate level As soon as the season ends your up for renewal. These coaches meet with these kids at season end and let them know if they want to keep them or not. They kick the rocks early.
Kind of true. Power 5 schools are the exception (where most of the money is made). As Keyshawn said, back in 2015 they implemented new rules to guarantee scholarships for 4 years in order to protect students from the business side of college sports.
It’s a business, guys. Just like players have the freedom to use their one-time transfer to find a better fit/get more playing time, etc.; coaches are going to do the same. We actually need more of this. We need more decisiveness about player/coaching commitments, honest information to players about their prospects, how players’ abilities fit a system, etc. Too much of this is being driven solely by NIL, and not everyone is worthy of an NIL deal at ALL, let alone a 6 or 7-figure deal.
This is exactly why “no-sitout” transfers should only be allowed when there’s a coaching change. If an incoming coach can decide certain players don’t fit; fine, just allow them to transfer penalty-free (e.g., immediate eligibility). Transferring student-athletes should sit one yr for all other transfers that are not hardship-based.
@@ezzzy172 It's always been a business. Nowadays, it's becoming more apparent. The best players from the portal will be selected to bring in potential income for the school. Like it or not this is what college sports is becoming.
@@ssj2tarble college sports has always been a business. It’s just been a business where the athletes get nothing that’s my point the reason they don’t pay these at least they claim that they’re just amateur and this isn’t like that they’re basically free workers. I’m just saying if it’s a business the NCAA needs to pay them it’s just a business when it’s convenient
@@ezzzy172 Recently they have begun to have players make a pretty good salary(albeit the top of the class). The athletes get things from former alumni to keep them afloat. That said, all athletes that are in the portal know full well the risks. A while ago you had to wait at least 2 years before you could even play.
@@ssj2tarble they don’t get anything from the NCAA there now allowed to make endorsement money. The only thing that happened is that before the NCAA was finessing these kids endorsements and not paying them a salary now they’re just not paying them a salary but all right y’all can get endorsements they’re still getting finessed just not as bad as before.
I'm a ST. John's Alumni.I was going to school there during the 80's when they were one of the best college basketball programs in the country. Ever since Lou Carnessca retired over the past 20 plus years St. John's has been mired in mediocrity. We have tons of basketball talent in the New York/New Jersey area. All of them have been going to Duke, Kentucky, UnConn, etc. And to prove my point, I remember when Jay Williams was in high school in New Jersey. He was a Five Star recruit and MCDONALD'S All American. He could've went to St John's but he went to Duke instead Why? Because Duke has a great basketball program and St. John's was mediocre. So I find it amazing why he's crying about the St. John's players Pitino doesn't want. They didn't win plain and simple. I know pitino isn't a Saint. But I want this program back on the national scene. I'm sick and tired of not making the tournament year after year after year. Ever since Pitino was hired St. John's has had more national buzz. It hasn't been like this in years.
He goes on these little rants that don't make much sense and always contradicts himself later in the segment, he thinks he's a lot smarter than he actually is
I don’t have problem with him saying this. But then the same coaches will complain when players take control and hit the transfer portal instead of waiting for the coach to tell them they not wanted on the team anymore.
The reality is with the portal and NIL coaches no longer have to work to recruit multiple years to get competitive. They know they can get what they want in the portal, and it's better to clear roster space in order to do it. They no longer need the current players to stick around just to have a roster. It's just where we are.
People need to realize that high level college basketball and football are borderline professional sport leagues. There is SO much money generated and coaches are judged solely off results. It's naive to think otherwise.
@@samuelpemberton A lot of these players in the power conferences are being paid and have been for decades. It's the worst kept secret but people don't like talking about it. Players have been getting paid way before nil came around.
@@mattbedrosian5298 players are NOT getting paid as EMPLOYEES and when it does come out that SOME have received compensation they have been penalized for it. If you want to treat them like employees and a business then PAY THEM. Simple as that
@@baller0724 I don't disagree with you that players should be getting paid. But there are players in cbb who are currently receiving multi million dollar nil deals. And you are completely wrong saying that players have been penalized for receiving compensation in the past, a few have yes. But nearly every big recruit to a power program in the past few decades has been paid under the table and you are just naive to think otherwise. It's the worst kept secret.
I don't see the issue people too worried about feelings and not working hard to prove yourself. Its easy to run for the guys. Prove the coach wrong and put in the work and commitment
This will always be the case for a new coach coming in, only difference is most coaches don't say this publicly. You have to bring in new players to be successful, lack of talent is one of the main reasons the last coach failed. Pitino is a better coach than John Calipari but hasn't coached the same level of talent since losing the Louisville job. Pitino isn't the greatest person to hire due to his past but he's an outstanding college coach.
As a st.John’s fan maybe…just maybe it’s time to look at the players as well. It’s not only the coaches that are the issue. We need some exciting players.
They cant cut everybody or most of the roster because the NCAA and each conference has rules on how many scholarships you can give out over a 4-6 year period. 4 year guaranteed scholarships work better with football.
Jay/ Dave. … spot on….then pay the kids severance. It’s not their fault. Let them stay or go but at least they can continue their education. Is this really what we want from amateur sports? My coach left after my sophomore year.. left in the middle the night. The coach that came in sucked. Ran schemes we were not built to run. The conflict was brutal. The best outcome… just pay my tuition and I will be fine. My senior year, that’s what happened. I just went to school and graduated….no basketball. And I was fine.
If Sonny Dykes can take a prior year 5-7 TCU to a National Championship game the next year with mostly the prior year's players, no coach worth their salt has room to complain about their current roster.
It sucks… but this is life. Work the game FOR YOU. YOU ARE LUCKY if dozens of people go out of your way to help you. Just think of everyone dealt a bad hand who has had to fight for every second, every opportunity, and every mile
Man I hope the players graduating now form some sort of union to protect the college players. The NCAA isn't doing it. The colleges aren't doing it. I'm not saying the coaches shouldn't be able to move on from players, I'm just saying it would suck to lose a scholarship just because of a coaching change. That can change a young man's entire trajectory in life. There was a time college sports was about a team environment for young men to grow and a few to go pro. Now it's all big business. Unfortunately the college students basically agreed to a select few living large instead of everyone being taken care of.
@@soda8736 They shouldn't feel remorse. You clean house as a new manager/CEO in any field. The issue is when guys don't have guaranteed scholarships if they aren't on the team. That has to remain the priority for institutions or else we should no longer consider college athletics as amateur play.
Rick made that greasy comment with the Bishop standing next to him... 😄 I totally get that he wants to build his own team, but I think the university should honor the education part of the contract. If a player wants to pursue their basketball career, they have the option to use the portal. College sports is essentially about education (though that seems to be changing).
Sports is a business once your child starts playing travel sports. If you want it to be about fun, sign your kid up to play at the YMCA or recreational center.
@@jeanjacques7874 No one is really saying that anymore. Most people are aware that a majority of these players from the power conferences have been getting paid for years now, its the worst kept secret in college sports.
Jay's take is stupid. A new coach is like a new broom...He sweeps clean. Forget about what's fair to the kid. If he doesn't like it, hit the transfer portal. Follow the old coach or go somewhere else. Coaches like Prime and Pitino are setting the trend to the way it's going to be in the future. There's a new sheriff in town....get on board or leave!
That would be crazy if these players don't even go to class. At least have their education worked around areas that benefit them (finance, marketing, communication, and business classes). Let's not make them stupider.
Unfortunately this is what you get with names like Rick Pitino. He's a great strategist and taskmaster. But, you also get the tyrant & domineering influence that definitely will win games but you also will break hearts of players who will not play for this school that could play at others schools and not on his team. It's not a professional team. But it's run like one. Discarding amateurs like they play for contracts. I'm with J. Will. This is the same thing that goes on at football universities like Tuscaloosa's Crimson Tide.
I was shocked to learn that some schools have one year renewable scholarships. I was under the impression that 4 years of schooling was always guaranteed.
This has been going on for decades it's nothing new. High level college sports is a business and winning is all that matters. Shady stuff is the norm since coaches are judged strictly off results.
@@jakemf1 An education institution that relies on Mens basketball and football to create millions of dollars of revenue for them. All other collegiate sports are losing colleges money. High level college bball and football is the farthest thing from an educational institution and is a complete business.
@@mattbedrosian5298 Again these are educational institutions. Look at the uniform it is right there. Sports is a loosing game yes so higher education should focus on that and not competitive sports which have nothing to do with students
@@jakemf1 Well if you think Schools should focus on higher education go root on the ivy league. Because major conferences value mens basketball and football above anything else. It's a multi billion dollar business, the ship sailed decades ago from the point you are trying to make.
@@mattbedrosian5298 That ship has changed course! Many colleges are cutting Athletics because it is a loosing game except for the top programs. Education was never about Athletics money or not.
This statement by Pitino is indicative of a god complex. It is not even important to him to consider how bad that sounded, realistic as it is, he because he clearly divorces basketball from education. The better way to present it was turning it around and saying that some of the current kids on the team will likely find that the fit is not for THEM.
The biggest fallacy that’s being projected in sports is that a coach, a program should be loyal to a player. The coach program has a responsibility to the program and those who work the hardest for the program. Circling back to the comment that it’s “unfair” is ridiculous. It’s unfair to neglect responsibility to his team in favor of individuals.
At times I think Jay Williams is a little too self righteous IMO. There is no I in team and if a new coach comes into a program, it is his right to change the pieces that this coach wants see fit. College Basketball is about revenue and winning to have a successful program. It's not amateurism anymore especially with the transfer portal and NIL being a major factor and Universities and Institutions are a point that they need to compete especially on the elite level. It's the new reality.
So if the new coach deems you a poor fit, do you just get cut? That's kind of harsh to an 18 or 19 yr old who made the commitment. Life's tough, I get that. But I think that is what J Will is talking about.
@@brob8204 They're old enough to tell a coach at 18 or 19 to go to the G League to pursue a pro career. It's fair game for a coach to tell that player you don't fit our program. Major College athletics is now a business.
And at the same time if they get more money than what's provided with the NIL, then the coach and Athletic Department should also choose who they want to participate or not in their program, just like the pro's. Again it's not amateurism anymore in College Athletics and it should also be negotiated including tuition and fees in a collective bargaining agreement both sides working together in my most humble opinion.
I think it’s important to realize he didn’t say they weren’t welcomed he is self aware of his leadership style and demands of players to know the odds I think that’s actually valid and honesty in a press conference should be refreshing and not controversial
Outside of walk-ons, if you don’t get offered, you don’t go there. So, there’s only so much “choice” in college. Jay’s argument is like being upset that an NBA or NFL player on the end of the bench getting cut after 1 year is “unfair”.
Jay let me help you out....those who do not fit his style of play can supplement their case by doing all the other things, including being over the top in love with the game and have a high level commitment to excellence. That's what he means. Those who fit will stay, those who don't will go unless they possess other intangible traits.
So much for education at a religious institution. Sports is the worse at higher education it has become a joke. This has never been about kids or education it’s about money
What does Jay expect though? A new coach had the right to build his own roster. Pitino didn't fire the old coach. These players have so much freedom now with the transfer portal. It's about time to stop wanting to always baby them. At least Pitino said publicly what any other coach would do. It's funny that he brought up Deion Sanders because like the Colorado players these players don't have much room to complain seeing as how they haven't fielded a good team
Look people it's no secret if you play for Rick Pitino you better be ready to work. He is high energy full court press match up man zone. This type of style requires a lot of energy most kids don't have. I respect these new coaches being honest with their team.
To put it into context for Jayson Williams we had like 3 players miss the end of the season for disciplinary reasons... Obviously he doesn't know that and just wants to make pitono out to be a villain
Just stop Jay. These kids can just leave after one year with NIL deals, so guess what? The coach can say if he wants them there. I love what Rick Pitino is doing
you still not addressing the issue tho, not all kids get NIL deals, not all kids get paid, and if a kid joins a college program it’s not his fault the coach gets fired now a new coach comes in and wants another player there needs to be a balance OR…… pay college athletes like employees
The way the world works, if you ain’t good enough you get the boot! Unless the leader is a democrat! He/she/them/they would rather lose and fail to make everyone happy but bring them all down with he/she/them/they
Democrats own you buddy. Heart and soul. This topic isn’t even about them but it just comes out of you like a hiccup. You’re like a jilted ex-lover who can’t let go, and now brings him up at every dinner conversation out of the blue.
