James and Ninetailedbrush are reacting to Top Gun: Maverick and this is the best! What a great sequel to the classic 80s movie, Top Gun. Tom Cruise returns as Maverick to train a new class of Top Gun graduates and Goose's son, Rooster. He also meets an old love interest played by Jennifer Connelly! Enjoy this first time watching reaction video!

This movie clearly hit you guys hard, as it should. But imagine having grown up with the first one, pretending you were Maverick and Goose on the playground with your best friends, or climbing trees with your brother and pretending you were getting into jets to shoot down some MIGs.... and then finally being able to see this sequel as a 40-something. This one hits me VERY hard.

Top Gun: Maverick is the perfect culmination of what we (or the general public) loves about Hollywood. It’s a perfect popcorn movie, the like we didn’t see for a while now. It’s more than just 80s nostalgia, it’s a throwback to why people went to the movies in the past.
@SadPeterPan1977
@SadPeterPan1977 Год назад
I don't get the "like we didn't see for a while now" comment. Most movie releases today are nothing but popcorn movies. Disney have made a fortune churning out popcorn movies for the last decade. It's the less porcorny stuff that's harder to find in a cinema now. Where this film is a throwback is that it's the kind of unashamedly pro-US military film that the 80s pumped out regularly due to the US Government policy of the time of providing access to their military hardware to filmmakers whose films made them look good.

@@SadPeterPan1977 well, we're not talking about the military aspect. What we mean by that phrase is these days, movies are focused too much on the casting checkboxes, and the CGI, but the plot quality is subpar and the effort on the plot isn't done in parallel of other stuff. Your first focus should be THE PLOT, and when you nail it, then you can move on to the rest. Because a film is an avenue of telling a STORY. When you lose the balance, then there's no story to tell. It's just boring and not entertaining. And it's pointless. This movie's casting IS diverse, so they've ticked that, but the plot is great as well, and hence it doesn't feel "in your face" because the focus here is first and foremost the plot. It's when the focus is only on checking boxes that it's very obvious the audience isn't interested because people go to see film because they want to be entertained by a story. e.g. if I'm a Tom Cruise fan, even if he's in a movie (say, the recent The Mummy he was in), I probably will skip seeing it since the story is crap, even though he's in it. If that makes sense.

@@SadPeterPan1977 the thing is while top gun is a US airforce/navy military movie they dont push any political or social propaganda. If your gonna use disney as a reference than just look what they did to light year. They specifically changed the movie script for 1 character. It completely changed the dynamic of the interaction between buzz and the character in question. Then there is marvels she hulk. They ruined she hulk making her promote feminism with her cat call conversation to the hulk. The hulk is probably the 1 person who should understand the pain of being targeted. People tend to think the hulk was created during the gamma explosion. However, hulk was a split personality banner formed as a kid after being abused by his father. It was only able to take control and get the super power aspects after the gamma explosion. Not to mention bruce has been on the run since becoming the incredible hulk and become a victim of being the "bad guy," among every situation he is around. She hulk was a female impowering comic without the feminist mind set we see now and disneys marvel ruined that now.

According to former Top Gun instructor Dave Burke, who was an advisor to this movie, the majority of the flight scenes are practical and were flown by current Top Gun pilots. @k338914

@@wrswrftp Even the dogfight is almost completely realistic. E.g. the maneuver where Su-57 grazes the rocket is called "Frolov's chakra" and considered a trademark of Sukhoi family fighters (although has been performed once by an F-22 and once by a J-20). The idea to "go low to confuse his targeting" is on point because '57 just spent both his heat-seeking R27/AA10 rockets and is left only with radar-homing R73/AA11, and low-altitude interference (especially in complex terrain like the canyon) actually does mess up radar signals. F-14 can withstand more gunshots than Su-57 due to the former's hull is made with steel/aluminium while the latter's is with plastic composites (much better for weight and stealth but much worse against direct weapon penetration). And the final Hangman's arrival is the classic example of an over-eager pilot (third '57) sleeping on a wildcard in the dogfight.

One of my favorite things about Top Gun is the value it puts on human life. In an interview the actors who played the fighter pilots said that they were given the option to change their call sign and choose something themselves, but apparently through a series of amusing events (that they did not divulge) they each earned the call sign they already had. The only one of the actors to change his was Hangman, apparently it was originally something over dramatic like 'Slayer' but after talking to actual Naval aviators he was told that there is a difference in style between naval aviator call signs and Air Force call signs. The Air Force tended to choose names like Slayer, spine crusher, etc while the Navy's were less graphic and dramatic. Then after talking with his fellow fighter pilot actors he decided through general consensus to go with Hangman, a name he apparently also earned through an amusing event. Also if you look at the design on his helmet, it has letters missing like an actual game of Hangman.

He had to ask the story behind that one, and apparently when the guy was in 7th grade, he had a date to the homecoming dance and was super nervous. One thing he was nervous about was one of his... parts... getting out of control, so he tied a string around it to try and keep it down, and it was bit of a painful & embarrassing failure if you can imagine! Then Noose became Hangman.

Objectively, this and Catching Fire are my favorite sequels of all time. This was great in theaters. The cinematography stood out as well as the soundtrack. I liked Val Kilmer’s appearance. They respected him and his character and his condition without mocking it. I loved the stunts more in this one because you can see whom is whom and they made them more realistic by the audience hearing the characters struggle to breathe due to increase or decrease of altitude. The homage to goose was well done and do agree Miles Teller did phenomenal as his son. What made this movie even better was they focused on what made the original great, but made corrections to what the audience did not like.

One of the most important things to note is that the flight scenes with the actors were real, they were in the cabins and in full flight, I recommend seeing behind the scenes, impressive! Anyway, in general shots of the planes, some were true and there was also a lot of CGI, especially in the very risky scenes or maneuvers, because obviously and by common sense, the army would not allow so much risk filming with their planes because they are very expensive, but everything was so well integrated into the movie, the practical fx, the real thing and the CGI, that it all looks quite realistic.

The only problem with filming all the cast in the backseat - for the two-seaters, the perspective is the same for the pilot and the WSO, and you can see that in the position of the wings in the shot behind them, when really it should look like one is in the front and one in the back. the two seaters are used for missions that have a high task saturation like the one in the movie. In situations where the pilot needs to focus on flying the back seater can handle the other part of the mission. Flying takes so much mental capacity and in such high stakes situations its to easy to fuck up the tiniest thing and screw it all hence the back seater being there to split the workload

4:18 The hypersonic plane at the beginning is technically not based off of anything that exists, as officially the movie got real Skunkworks engineers on to design "a plausible hypersonic jet". In reality most people know of this projects actual existence as the SR72 "The son of the Black Bird". It is meant to be the next generational step from the SR71 that was the super sonic spy plane into the Hypersonic speeds. Now the government has denied the existence of this project but a few 3d renderings from its original pitch before being classified are still out there on the internet, and have lead to may theories on its true design and abilities.

I have to correct you slightly. You’re referring to the “Legacy” Hornets. The ones used in the movie are the E and F Super Hornets, made after Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas in the mid 90s. They basically upgraded the A/B/C/D platforms, made them bigger with more fuel storage, better range, upgraded radar, and an extra weapon station under each wing - the “Legacy” Hornets could carry up to 10 air-to-air missiles, the Supers with the extra stations can carry up to 12. They’ve done similar with the F-15 (the Strike Eagle supposedly can carry something stupid like 24 air-to-air missiles!). Hangman’s Hornet at the end is loaded with 8 air-to-air missiles (2 sidewinders on the wingtips, 4 AMRAAMs underwing and 2 AMRAAMs on the fuselage), 2 laser guided bombs, and THREE external fuel tanks… the Super Hornet has the nickname “Rhino”, Hangman’s plane lived up to that nickname.

The Navy no longer flies the A-D legacy model. And when we last did, we used primarily C/D models for both training and normal OPS. When I was instructing in Miramar, we only had two B models out of about 45 aircraft. All the rest were C/D. I later instructed on the east coast (Oceana) and we didn't have a single B, only two A+, which outside of the old Blue Angels are very rare to find. The Marines are moving away from them in favor of the F-35B/C. The Marine Harrier pilots are transitioning to the F-35B model while the Marine Hornet pilots are moving to the F-35C. You won't find a single F/A-18A-D in this movie, they are using the E/F models. Cheers.

The test plane in the beginning of the movie is a fictional plane based on the SR-71 blackbird, which first flew in 1964, but wasn't introduced to the public until '66. It's top official speed is 2,200 (mach 2.86),but it has been known to reach speeds greater than mach 3.It had a regular cruising altitude of 85000 feet. It cost $33 million to build in the 60s, which would be much more today. It was officially retired in 1999. The engine technology used in the test plane in the movie does exist, though, and can reach speeds up to mach 9 or more. Theoretically, it could reach speeds up to mach 20, but the trick is building a vehicle that won't disintegrate at such high speeds.

The bar scene where we are introduced to the new generation - Miles Teller learned the song and played it live in that scene, with the cast and the extras (most of whom are actual real life pilots) joining in. There’s an official music video of the performance, and the recording is on the OST. I feel like the altercation between Rooster and Hangman wasn’t so much Hangman being a douche, but almost as if he’s trying to spark something in Rooster. He points out a couple of times that Rooster is too safe. “You’re snug on that perch, just waiting for the right moment… that never comes”, “I don’t mean to criticise, you’re conservative, that’s all”. Hangman is pushing Rooster, maybe not the best way to do it, but Rooster needs the push. 30:58 there’s no way Amelia didn’t already know Maverick was there… she would’ve seen his bike parked outside the front door. The absolute rollercoaster from Coyote passing out and recovering just in time, the birdstrike that Phoenix and Bob had to eject from, the argument between Maverick and Rooster, and then Iceman’s funeral… that just really pulls you from pillar to post in a short amount of time. The interaction between Maverick and Rooster after they are both shot down is one of my favourite moments: “What are you doing here? Do you think I took that missile for you to be down here with me?” “I just saved your life!” “I saved YOUR life, that’s the whole point. What the hell were you thinking?” “You told me not to think!” Hangman saving the day at the end… he’s good, he’s really good… in fact, he’s ‘saving the day in an excessively heavy F-18’ good! It’s quite funny to think he makes the save with his plane LOADED, if his plane wasn’t loaded to the hilt he might have got there sooner 😂 The thing about no one dying - go back to when Maverick is being reprimanded after the first training. “Teach them how to work as a team, and strike the target” “And how to come home… and how to come home, sir.” “Every mission has its risks, these pilots accept that.” “I don’t, sir.” His biggest success is that everyone got home safe… only 3 pilots died, and all were enemies - the two in the helicopter that Rooster shot, and the final Su-57 that Hangman shot. Otherwise, the loss of life on both sides in the whole mission was minimal (although I don’t know about the casualties inside the facility when they bombed it 🤷🏻‍♂️).

So there are four original F/A-18 Hornet models, A, B, C, and D. Models E and F are the more modern Super Hornets (they're actually called "Rhinos," an informal nickname, to eliminate confusion from Hornets in flight operations and radio calls) A, C, and E are single seat. Single seaters are the fighters used primarily in missions. B, D, and F are dual seat. Dual seaters are primarily training craft, they often have identical flight controls front and rear for that purpose. One of the physical differences the second seat adds is lower fuel capacity to make room for the extra seat, and lower landing weight due to the lower total fuel weight.

Now go and get your dose in the theater while it is still on there (I def recommend 4DX Screen X if it’s available near you)! You’ll prob be able to hear Hans Zimmer (+Lorne Balfe)’s touch better!!

Whoa, you're one of the first. I almost don't want to watch this since I'll get the Blu Ray in November. I might even see it in a local theater again. After having watched "Labyrinth," did you notice a David Bowie song when Jennifer Connelly was introduced?

You're right that that P51 plane at the end was a world war 2 plane. It's Tom Cruise's plane lol. Watch some of the interview from Jennifer Connelly saying that she had just recovered from a crippling fear of flying, then she had to fly in that with Tom LOL. But she said if it weren't Tom Cruise, she would have felt nervous. XD

It is amazing how many people miss the Skunk Works logo on the tail of the plane and on the stick.
