I love the detail still of him wearing his coat when talking to Amy I noticed it when i was young and was confused but it’s just perfect!

River Song will forever be my favourite Doctor Who character, period (Romana II and Missy are very close seconds, but River takes number one). I absolutely love Matt and Alex's chemistry too, my favourite episodes of DW are the episodes River is in, and especially the ones during Matt's run. I can't imagine anyone else playing River except for Alex!

Who doesn't love River Song?!?!?! I love her so much. Her story so much. all of it. Oh, gosh. There's so much coming. I can't wait to see Paula respond to this. Moffat is so good at telling these stories. And I agree. I think the thing that I love about Smith is that he's able to handle the BIG GOOFY "LOOK AT ME, I'M BASICALLY A KID" humor that he pulls off so well, but also those real intimate moments, the love of Amy that is like a deep, loving older brother's love for a sister. Then also have those intense angry moments or magnificent speeches. Like, I love last week's episode there he goes "There's one thing you never ever put in a trap... ME!" It just gives me chills. I need to watch this season again. I just do.

Amy’s countdown is wonderfully dramatic. And rewatching this season has made me realize just how amazing the music is. Every single episode has music at least once (usually more) that compliments the scene SO WELL. Love your reactions! Super excited for you to see some of my favorite Smith scenes. Another fun fact about the episode: they had to refilm the ending a couple times because Matt kept kissing her back!

When Amy was feeling around for the communicator, I started thinking about Velma and “my glasses! I can’t find my glasses!”... I just noticed that she’s wearing an orange sweater. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence. Now, if the Doctor said ascots were cool, and River were wearing purple camouflage, that would be a different story.

There is an important thing to know about the Doctor. To him Amy is more like a member of his Family, he met her when she was a child. What does a Father do when his Daughter is worried about something? He lies to remove her fear or worry. That was why he said about the crack at the end.

Okay, so Paula is starting to be won over, but her cat still seems pretty indifferent. 😅

Something I think you can say is, Stephen Moffat definitely writes female companions differently than Davies did.

I completely agree with Paula on this. I had no problems with Amy wanting the Doctor in a sexual manner, but if the Doctor had responded in any way other than brushing her off, it would have been super weird. The Doctor has always been asexual in my mind, but I think a lot of that might be to do with the fact that we're watching him after he lost his family. Thinking you blew up your home world with your granddaughter still on it is liable to make you think things like sex don't really matter.

It’s not romantic between Amy and the Doctor, she just wanted the physical in that moment. Also 10 and Rose definitely banged

I think with Amy at the end is a mix of things, not least she just went through something pretty terrifying and thought she might die, twice. Sieze the day and all that. I like 11's reaction to the very suggestion however, basically horrified at the idea - "But your Amy!" I would also highly recommend you react to the minisode between this episode and the next as it leads directly on as well as directly into the next episode and I think makes more sense of that last scene.

Paula, I have totally thought that those were Amy's motivations for her behavior at the end and you seem to be the only reactor who sees it that way.

Yay, the internet stayed stable so we got a reaction without video distortion! Now i have seen this and GOT multiple times but never put together the "Jorah turning to stone" connection. Great insight Katrina! Now all i need is a "grumpy snuggle" and i sleep comfortably

Rose didn't really react much at the time to David Tennant with Madame Pompadour so I didn't really notice much that Amy didn't seem jealous. She really doesn't have a relationship beyond friendship and infatuation with the Doctor anyways. Personally, I loved that Amy hit on the Doctor, and not only because she's incredibly sexy when doing it. It would be natural for her to wonder if she had simply settled for Rory, believing that she would never see the Doctor again. On top of that, she's just been through a scary, life-altering situation with the Doctor. This is going to be a great starting point for Rory's character arc, where he will go from castoff to hero.

I just hate and love the angels. My favorite villains of DW.

I found this channel a few days ago, actually probably about a week ago now. I watched your first few Matt Smith videos on this channel and it made me want to go check out the videos you did on the previous seasons on the Fan Theory channel. So now I'm all caught up and ready to watch this video (I have A LOT of time on my hands, because quarantine.)

The best thing about Alex Kingston's performance is she was told at the very beginning ("Silence in the Library") exactly who River Song is so she could put the proper nuance on the performances.

My guess why this was the first episode was filmed first in this season with Karen Gillan and Matt Smith had to do with Alex Kingston (aka River Song).. Steven Moffat had to pre-book shooting dates around Alex Kingston's schedule. Alex Kingston is signed only to do individual episodes of Doctor Who, so if the writers want to get her in an episode there is a lot of phone calls to make arrangements to get her in studio for filming..

When the Doctor Who Experience existed, it had a room of weeping angels. They'd flick the lights on and off. Genuinely really scary

Diseases turning people to stone is pretty common in sci-fi and fantasy. In the 2nd Season of the New Who episode New Earth (Tennant, Rose, hospital, cat nurses) the Baron of New York (yes, I am leaving out all of the extra New) had a "turn to stone" disease.

I didn't like Amy's thing at the end at first. But then I realized that to her, the doctor is kinda like her imaginary friend becomes real once every few years.

The Doctor not doing it? Come on, Paula! Ten, in The Girl in the Fireplace, appearing in the ship with the clockwork men, with the tie in the head? Or maybe was just my head...

Knowing something that's revealed in later episodes makes the scene where Amy kisses him and tries to do things with him REALLY weird to watch 😂😂

I love this 2 parter, and this season is one of my personal favourites. That said, I’m embarrassed to say I never even made the connection between the title of the episode and Jorah! You know, I love the idea of one fan and one newb, but if I can make a suggestion, if you both want to watch something new for both of you while the quarantine is going, try Farscape. One of the most underrated sci-fi series of all time, but one of the greatest for it’s overlying story arch. If you want a reference, James Gunn said it was his major influence for Guardians of the Galaxy. It will make you cry, it will have you on the edge of your seats, and through it all, the “Crightonisms” will have you laughing out loud. “Welcome to the Federation Starship S.S.Buttcrack!”

i still cant understand how any one can have reservations about matt smith at this point. For me the scene at the end of the eleventh hour, basically ................. run, had me sold on him instantly. Then again i only started watching doctor who tail end of season 4 so i guess hes my doctor and im biased. Hopefully paula grows to love him because hes goes from strength to strength from now.

this was an amazing episode, the only issue i had with it was the fact that the angles, didnt know if amy was looking at her or not?! they are quantum locked! at besed they would have been so scared of the crack theat they would have ignored her

Coming back to this one, the more important point isn't that Amy doesn't seem jealous of River but that River isn't jealous of Amy. Then again, maybe it's because River blows Amy out of air airlock, or ................ who knows .... Wink.

This is the most important episode of this season, maybe ever. At least a dozen things from it show back up, later in the season, and thru out Matt Smith run.

Foreshadowing 101 Amy: "What happens if the gravity fails?" Doctor: "I've thought about that." Amy: "And?" Doctor: "And we'll all plunge to our deaths. See? I've thought about it." Pretty solid conclusion to this two-parter if I'm honest. It's not as good as the first part, mostly on the basis of two things. Firstly, seeing the Angels move was a bad idea. It's a well directed scene and very tense, but seeing them move does undercut their menace a bit. Secondly, the final scene between Amy and the Doctor feels wrong. I get the reason that scene was included, specifically for the reasons Paula suggested, but it feels wrong to play this scene for comedy (also for bonus heartwarming, a script editor took Moffat to task for writing this scene, and he would later give her a promotion specifically because of that). Other than those two things, this is a great episode. It's scary, funny, action packed and emotional in all the right measures. Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor being under immense amounts of stress was fantastic, and the small tender moments he shares with River and Amy were wonderful, as was his final scene with Father Octavian. On that note, I think it's fair to say that Iain Glen is definitely one of the best guest performances on the show, he makes the character feel kind, authoritative and incredibly useful during a crisis. The way the series long arc of the crack was worked into the narrative was brilliant, and helps build up the anticipation for the rest of the series

River Song (Ph.D.!) is one of the best characters in the franchise. And such a complex role!

So the doctor defeats the Angel with the trick River used last episode. Watching the episodes full length I didnt notice. Cool.

I liked Paula's self-censoring with the Doctor's sex life. "The Doctor... ...did it."

If you think the idea of the Doctor having sex is weird, then you might want to stay away from episode 6 of Secret Life of a Call Girl. The Doctor goes home with Rose. (Or at least Matt Smith's character goes home with Billie Piper's.)

Btw River and Tennant had more offscreen adventures before he turned into Smith in big finish and the books. When she went to the library she met 10 just before the end of time or waters of Mars ep tried to get him into a hot tub in the tardis and then left him a note about how she got a job in the expedition into the library and how she would call him if it gets interesting

The only thing I didn't like about this story was the fact that we saw the angels move as that diminished their uniqueness a bit from other villains. Besides that a great 2 parter.

Amy wanting to bang the Doctor at the end I was like 'uh okay' not really knowing what to think about it once it first aired but it's really bad and gets worse the more you think about it. Nevermind the fact Amy cheats on Rory the night before their wedding and tries to go further, but it's also sexual assault and played for laughs. Look, I get Amy's feelings about being terrified and seconds away from dying before the Doctor saves the day, not to mention she's known him since she was a kid, this handsome, funny, strange, impossible hero and after all that adrenaline and relief at being alive, she decides she wants the Doctor. And we can debate on the complexities of that and Amy as a character til the cows come home. But there's no excuse for the sexual assault. The Doctor, repeatedly, pushes Amy away and tells her to stop and clearly doesn't reciprocate Amy's advances. Yet that doesn't stop her and she persists and that's a problem. Yet it's supposed to be funny, why? Because the Doctor is being awkward, or cause he's flustered and doesn't know how to react? Is it cause a gorgeous woman is throwing herself at him and yet he doesn't want her that way? Whatever the reason, it's a problem and another one of the countless scenes/moments in movies/tv showing how sexual assault on men is funny or not that serious. And to do the classic but very damning thing of saying 'Imagine if the roles were reversed', yea, the Doctor being the one to persistantly kiss and try to have sex with Amy who is unwilling and uncomfortable. It's rather disgusting. I am at least glad Moffat admitted he regreted that scene later on and would have done it differently, but it's still sad it got through the writing, filming and production with nobody raising this concern (at least none we know off).

I loved the writing during series 5 but I was having a hard time adjusting to a new Doctor and new companion. It took me a good while to like Amy and it wasn't until the very last episode of series 5 that Matt Smith became the Doctor, in my eyes at least. Rory was the only one I liked for the longest time. Happy to say that I grew to love both 11 and Amy.

Amy kissing the Doctor like that at the end of the episode becomes even more uncomfortable after a revelation from a certain episode from series 6.

I think this is a very good episode with just a few things holding it back. Bringing the crack into this story is good for advancing the larger, overarching story arc, but it marginalises the Weeping Angels as villains imo. Perhaps another villain would've been more suitable for this story? The resolution to the story is also a little weak because the Doctor didn't need to be there. The Angels would've kept draining the power and fell into the crack no matter what. I also think it was a mistake to show the Angels moving too. It didn't make sense that they were still stone while moving either. I also really dislike the scene between Amy and the Doctor at the end. It's safe to say that scenes like that didn't endear me to Amy that much early on.... However the rest of the story is spot on. The setting is fantastic, the character interactions are great and Matt Smith is particularly on fine form. The pace and tension are constantly being amped up. Amy being forced to keep her eyes shut is a brilliant idea! I also really like how Moffat is dropping in clues to advance the larger plot of the series and how he fairly seamlessly ties all of that in with this story. It's especially enjoyable to watch in retrospect because I know where all of that stuff leads. No spoilers though....

I wonder if it is the doctor who writers saying that all women is willing to cheat IF they can get away with it, or it was just this amy character they wrote like this?

just subbed :) i liked your reaction i will watch all the others hehe. also this is just what i thought about the doctor and amy's relationship out of all his companions she was the one that felt most like family they were pretty much best friends, yeah the other companions also were friends but amy isn't like most yeah this scene she's in makes her look hot blooded for the doctor but she only had this moment unlike other companions we're they are all like oh i love him and they want something romantic but that's just me.

I think it's so funny that Paula can see Nine having sex over the others. That scene where he's "dancing" with Rose, it's smoldering. They've had tensión before but that was the most amount of sexual tension I could imagine from the Doctor.

@PaulaDeming Yeah, fact is the putting off of people towards a new Doctor in the first few episodes is very common. Though, canon-wise, it can be said that the Doctor is still kind of in transition to their new form, so there will be some off-putting behavior (If you think the way 11 was in those first two episodes was bad in terms of his behavior, the Sixth Doctor [and @KatrinaAlysha will back me up on this if she's also down with Classic Who] is so erratic with his behavior in his first episode that at one point he tries to strangle his lone companion).

River can feel like she's always written to be SO COOL AND MYSTERIOUS every time she shows up. Even Jack has plenty of dark moments in his Who appearances, whereas River is more "I have secrets but super chill about it while knowing too much". The fact she's the only character who knows so much of the Doctor's future sort of taunts both him and the audience. Because of her limited availability she doesn't show up as much as the main cast, so there's no time to let her feel more "human" - unlike companions and even the Doctor. Not a problem with her personality or acting, just how she fits into the story.

I honestly really didn't like what they did with the angels here. I didn't like that they went from sending people back in time to merely snapping their necks. I didn't like the whole "act like you can see" stuff. I liked how in Blink, the angels were said to be "quantum-locked" and that it was just a fact of their biology that they turn to stone whenever they are directly observed. Here, it made it sound like the turning to stone is a choice. I also didn't like that we saw what the angels actually look like and that they literally just look like living stone

One thing that started to annoy me a bit during Moffat's run of 11 was the overuse of the "I Am The Doctor" score. It got used time and time again, cementing the shift from the doctor seen as quirky otherworldly entity by his companions, to a fully fledged superhero, which I didn't perticularly like.
