@@ntonismpelias8267 It's been 9 months, but I can throw my interpretation into the ring. In my opinion, the line "Maybe God does not believe in you" consolidates the idea that, if there is a creator deity, they might hate what you've become, even as you scramble to earn their favour and condemn those that deny them. What if God doesn't think you're good enough. What if, without realising, you've allowed yourself to become to shitty that they don't believe you will ever be good enough. This "You" could refer to you as an individual, or to humanity as a whole.

While this song has a ton of interesting and cool ideas, the one I personally have always seen as the most impactful/important is the line “maybe life on Earth could be heaven. Doesn’t just the thought of it make it worth a try?” Throughout the song, “God” insists that none of us are going to heaven. Therefore this world, this life, is the only one we get. It’s our only chance to make heaven for ourselves. This has always resonated with me, as I don’t really believe in any sort of afterlife and thus believe this life is the only shot I get, so I need to use it to do as much good and feel as much joy as possible before I’m gone. And I think if more people had a similar mindset, we might actually be able to make this world heaven in its own way.

Agreed. I love that line, it really makes you think. And I don't believe you need to be an atheist for it to work either. Whether you believe in an afterlife or not, doesn't it make sense to at least try to make this life as good as you can? Then if you continue to exist in some other form, well great. But if not, and the end is really the end, at least you can look back on what you did and feel pretty good about it. That's better than just feeling like a loser your whole life and then you die full of regrets.

I’ve always been puzzled by the people that say religion is some moral force that keeps people from doing “evil”. As you said, the belief that this is all we get makes it so much more urgent to do good in the world and to make the most of life.

This was a fantastic reaction dude. Your channel has become a new favorite for me! I’m an atheist, and I love this song because it does a wonderful job of expressing why me, and so many people like me leave the church. Bo hasn’t come out as explicitly atheist but he grew up in a very catholic home and has expressed his displeasure with organized religion on multiple occasions. The point you made about leaving faith at the door and listening to different perspectives is so fucking pertinent. If someone’s belief system is actually threatened by 4 minutes of a differing view point…that says a lot more about that person than the opposing view point. Because real faith cant be dissuaded from. Psychologically, that’s not supposed to be a thing. Because faith is just an opinion. Yes, it’s an extremely important and powerful opinion, but an opinion nonetheless. What faith absolutely is not, is a conclusion. Even though I’m an atheist, I’ll never try to dissuade someone from their faith. Morally, I view doing so as wrong. Because faith is an integral part of humanity. Having a guiding light to follow and a belief in something bigger than us is a truly beautiful thing. But conclusions? Hell yeah I’ll argue against a conclusion. Those are very different things that unfortunately, get mixed up by a lot of people. And that is the biggest point I take away from this song. Religion is not faith. Religion is conditional faith. Belief in x but only if y and z stay out of it. That hard line fucks the whole thing up. I grew up in an ultra conservative, evangelical church. I watched men stand up and sing about gods grace right next to their wives who wore extra makeup to hide the bruises. I listened to a pastor preach about the sin and filth of the gays, the liberals, and even sometimes the “blacks” (quotes needed cuz that’s not the term he used). And end every sermon with the standard “god loves all”. So many hypocrisies, so many conditions, so much cognitive dissonance in action. I know not all churches are as fucked up as the one I grew up in. I know not all christians, jews, Muslims, Hindu’s or whatever are as hypocritical and cruel as the “good christians” I was raised around. There’s so many incredible people of faith who are legitimately good people by any metric. But, you can’t ignore the fact that monsters do exist, and the source of their monstrosity is the perversion of faith being twisted into conclusion. And that, is the driving force behind the needless pain and suffering of so many people. Love yourself, love your neighbor, don’t be a dick, that’s it. Easy peasy. Cheers!

For me this song kind of hit in a weird way. I was raised in a semi-faithful family. Everyone believed what they wished, but most importantly we were taught to follow our own ideas. Having struggled a lot with life I had trouble really going for what I believe ending up in the idea that. If there is Heaven. So be it. I will follow my life and if I'm deemed unworthy of Heaven that's that then. It really helped me find my way in life not really being afraid of death. I think that's why the line "You pray so badly for heaven. Knowing any day might be the day that you die." hits me so hard personally. I wished for so long in my life for something to happen positively. Not specifically wishing to God just into the void that things would change. And it did. Because of the people around me. I lost so much of my life wishing instead of improving. After realising putting in the effort to make this the best life I have despite everything makes it all the more worth it. Love your reactions and hearing you talk your mind keep it going!

The bible teaches that he has unconditional love, and so many of us need that . And when you start to embrace that love you really start to see a positive change in your life

Trusting in you Jesus even though I’m struggling putting groceries in the refrigerator, and paying bills. I lost my job because I declined the vaccine. I declined because of my pre existing health condition (Lupus) and Heart disease. I was denied my medical/religious exemption from Forsyth Hospital. My husband passed away three years ago, Im all alone. I’m a single mother. Both of my sons are autistic. Every month is a struggle, a battle to not end up on the streets. I’m so depressed and embarrassed by my situation. I post my story all over to spread awareness of what mandates are doing, not just to myself but to many other families. I’ve been put down and mocked because of my circumstances it truly hurts me. BUT even after all these things. I STILL HAVE FAITH GOD WILL PROVIDE. HE HAS THIS FAR. He has sent strangers to help me. I’m forever grateful! This is my testimony! GOD HEARS PRAYERS! EVEN as I face homelessness seemly every month with two young children. I know our Heavenly Father will provide. Thank you Jesus.

People did those things. No one sent those people to help you. The credit goes to the people. Not to “God”. Don’t rely on the universe to somehow manifest what you need. You need to do it yourself. When you find strength to do that or you find help or you take an opportunity, give YOURSELF that credit. YOU did it. Stop denying yourself that. Life is hard. But struggling is harder. So when you manage to come out of it for how ever long, YOU deserve the praise.

I am an atheist, but I have a lot of respect for people's personal faith. What I do not really accept is organised religion - i.e. the church. That is an organisation created by humans to control and influence the behaviour of others based on the founders' own interpretations. I find it doesn't usually have anything to do with faith so much as power. If there is a/multiple gods, I would think the most natural way to worship is an interpersonal connection, and that cannot be coded and controlled and decided by other humans. This is starting to get ranty, but I get the feeling from Bo's material that maybe we would have some common ground. Whether he is an atheist or has faith, however, I will not speculate upon.

I don't know really what to call myself...If you take simulation theory into account, "God" could be anything that may have created the universe for any reason...I think one of the big failures of imagination of organized religion is they fail to take it to it's conceptual conclusion and tend to treat "God" as human-like with human-like elements (As Bo says in Rant. A vague muscular man with a beard or a sword)...when in the reality we perceive, complexity rules...any god complex enough to create the world we experience would be unfathomable in it's desires...as Douglas Adams postulates in Hitchhiker's Guide...perhaps it's just a big computer of sorts meant to answer a specific question that we can have no reference for without escaping the universe and seeing it from an outside perspective...a literal impossibility...I guess it comes down to the original question, does existence precede essence? Are we "Creations" or simply "Emergent phenomena" (Which is kind of ironic as how phenomena emerge is incredibly complex)...

Bo is an absurdist comic. Telling people that you don't think you are better or smarter than them.... then immediately doing a song from "God's Perspective" is the definition of absurdity.

It's more so a lack of interest in underground comedy and just waiting for what the next stand of special is going to be from some already name brand comedian. I really think that the "who needs a thousand metaphores to know you shouldn't be a dick"'s message is the most erroneous and potentially dangerous, not only because our the least unstable version of this our modern western society is greatly fundamented on christian morals, but also because of, stating that not doing F up things should be common sense is just delusional; humans are violent and selfish by nature, you must not forget that; we tend to think that everything that allings with our worldview, or our view or how the world should be is the right thing, the normal, the "common sense" and no, we do need a damn ton of crafted values polishing over hundreds of generations to get to where we are now do not take our social state and conception of values for granted or like a physical law

There was an atheist podcast that I saw put out a video once that was really fascinating. They had people call in sort of radio show style, and they would have discussions with them. On this one, someone asked them: "What stops you from r*ping and murdering all you want?" Their response: "I do r*pe and murder all I want. And the amount I want is zero." And frankly, I think if the stuff he's saying contradicts someone's Christianity, then I think they should reevaluate their Christianity. It's a different perspective, sure, but the overall message is to have empathy and compassion and try to make life better while we're here. There's nothing un-christian about that.

As a fellow Christian and big Bo fan, amen to everything you said! 😊 Rather than being critical of faith in general, I feel like this song is more a critique of people whose faith is all about securing a spot in heaven for themselves and not about actually loving people here on earth and living the way Jesus taught us to live. If a mostly atheist/agnostic guy like Bo can get people to realize that, then more power to him! 👍 Ironically, the line I have the biggest problem with theologically isn't any of the "controversial" ones. It's the one about "My love's the type of thing that you have to earn," because that's the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches. The whole point of the Gospel is that we are incapable of earning God's love (because let's face it, we all suck), but that God doesn't expect us to. That's literally the whole point of Jesus. ...not to get us to Heaven, but to reconnect us to the love of the God who made us, and...as hard as it is to believe... actually does want to kick it with us! 🥰 (Although, I'm sure the aliens are in fact much cooler).

It amuses me somewhat, how accurate pards of this song actualy are to the Bible. In 1st Corinthians, it literally says that false Christians, people who are Christians only to get to heaven, and who have never truely believed, just lived out the motions, will be turned away at the gates, God saying "I never knew you." It's amazing how many other Christians I've met that have skated over that part, and act like total buttholes because "I believe in God, so I'm going to heaven whatever I do." My guys, if you were true Christians, you wouldn't have to say that, because you wouldn't want to be a butthole.

I think you're missing the point on the "My love's the type of thing that you have to earn" line. The point is the second part: "and when you earn it, you won't need it." That line I interpret as another way to put "do not judge lest ye be judged." I think the idea of us being "unworthy" or whatever came from the apostle Paul, who let's be real, most of his teachings pretty explicitly contradict and violate Jesus's teachings. According to Jesus, we absolutely earn God's love by loving and refusing to condemn our neighbor ("whatever you have done for the least of these among you, you have done for me.")

"If you want love then the love has got to come from you." hits really hard for me. I was raised baptist christian and I still consider myself spiritual, but I've always struggled with loving myself. I sought out "God's love" as an alternative but eventually realized I could never accept God's love until I was able to see myself as lovable. It went against all the things I'd been taught to have the courage to love myself as I was, sins and all. I think the growth and confidence and self love I've grown in my heart is way more powerful than any hypocritical pastor telling you you're not worth anything. And I think this love is a type of love that really does come from God.

Thank you for your reaction. Even when it went against what you believe, you were respectful and accepted his opinion as valid. It makes me feel like I could tell you what I believed and you would respect my opinion too. :) Thanks for being honest with us and yourself, it's really inspirational.

The biggest issue with Christian extremism is that it tries to make God's love conditional. The whole point is that His love is not, and while sin is bad, it's inherently human. It's not some kind of denying factor. Keep loving yourself, because God loves you. :)

Glad to see you've discovered Bo Burnham, and that you seem to really be enjoying his works. He's one of my favorite comedians, right alongside George Carlin, though with the music side of his routines, he brings a little extra, compared to George. There's no contest though. They both have incredibly intelligent insight on the world.

Respect bro, for reacting to this. It shows your open mindedness and a strong belief, which are both good things in their own right.

Leave it all at the door. Have faith in your fellow man, before anything else.

It’s interesting that you let us to you are Christian because you were having to overcome some of that cognitive dissonance that came during the song, because you had probably the least biased and most open reaction of any reactors I’ve seen that are Christian. One of the reasons I keep watching your channel.

There's one other one from this Christian reactor guy who always seems to be on a treadmill. I can't remember his name, but that one was also extremely good and from a really decent, open-minded Christian guy (as the overwhelming majority of Christians are) who had no problem laughing along and engaging with the content either.

@@Poemiserable That reactor was actually specifically the one I was thinking of in the comparison. He really struggled to see past the lines he disagreed with and didn’t seem to get the overall message of the song because of it. Are you speaking from the perspective of a Christian?

I try to be a nice atheist so it's always great to hear nice Christians. I've always appreciated Christian art, especially literature and music so it's nice to hear of Christians appreciating something that I feel is a little bit more for me. If you want to hear a younger Bo real religious rant check out his "Rant" (not Kanye Rant). That's a younger, angrier take I think and I'd be interested in your reaction.

man i gotta say, Inside will be so worth watching in order start to finish. i imagine its bad content to do it as a react so even just on your own. Seeing such an introspective person I think youd get a lot from it, and not just the songs make it what it is theres "live action" parts that likely wont be on youtube. Its the thing with Bo where he uses everything. he doesnt just flash lights on stage, each moment uses lighting to its fullest, same applies to the special. everything down to the transitions adds to the experience. either way loving the vids, and as an agnostic with a family very sensitive to the topic, I appreciate your ability to at least let people on the other side speak their speak without an instant wall or aggression. If your kids ever have questions about their faith, they'll be able to talk to you and that will make all the difference.
