The difficult thing is that Olaf is a master at punning, and puns seldom translate.

@@alicemilne1444 You can translate, or at least explain, puns, but only if you know the whole text beforehand and have some time to prepare. Translating "on the fly" would be difficult for a human, and AI will definitely fail at that.

@eisikater1584 As a professional simultaneous interpreter, I have had to translate puns on the fly before. The real problem is that the audience does not have the cultural background to get the most out of the jokes. How is someone from a country where Jaqueline is a perfectly normal traditional name to understand that it is as chavvy as Courtney in the UK.

Olaf Schubert is hard to translate in general, but with automatic subtitles that are unable to understand wordplay and additionally make a ton of mistakes, it makes it painful to watch. I was constantly looking at Mert's face and thought "oh the poor guy, the audience is laughing and there is no way of guessing why" :D

My best take on translating it for real, most likely there are still some mistakes in it and they will stay: Oliver: What's going wrong in German education policy? Let's talk about it with a man who actually had to go to school for several years as a child himself, with Olaf Schubert, ladies and gentlemen. Olaf Schubert Olaf, just in general, what do you say about the level of education in Germany? Olaf: You can't get rid of it, there is an educational gap and this educational gap is getting more and more gaping. And the danger is that young people who have had little access to education will tend towards political extremism. And let's not deceive ourselves, there are young people, who are just not the brightest. I don't want to offend anyone, but there are young people who aren't that interested in letters. They mostly live a bit on the edge of the periphery, many live right next to the S-Bahn station, so they hear all day: "Please, stay back", they say: "Sure, we'll do it". (Here we have a play with two meanings of a word, so that it can be translated two ways: “Please, stay back” and “Please, stay retarded”.) And these young people are often right-wing, even to the point of right-wing extremism, it goes so far that their arm flys up and in the end that is just a normal biological reaction, because the blood is not needed up here and it doesn't reach down here. So in this case we are talking about a wandering erection and that is a danger to democracy. Oliver: What is your experience with the German school system as a father of at least five children? There is a lot of talk about bullying at the moment. Olaf: Yes, but I think that is a bit exaggerated. A very interesting study found that nine out of ten children think bullying is really good and I observe that many students have very high social skills, empathy and compassion and that is also communicated. If they see that someone has a problem, they address it and say: “hey, you victim, I feel sorry for you, you retarded”. But of course we cannot sugarcoat anything, there is also violence. Thank God not from my boys, but from my daughters, from the little ones. And here I always say, be careful, you can't achieve anything with violence at your age. At least that's my experience, if you really want to achieve something with violence, then you really can only use it consistently against weaker people. That's what school is for, they have to learn that. Oliver: We've just talked about socially disadvantaged schools. It's actually the case that in areas where there is already a lot of poverty, there are more and more children, who speak little german. Can't this be distributed better? Olaf: That's the challenge, I think integration is what that's about, the integration of different cultures has to start early in school, also with leisure activities. So that the teacher brings the different cultures together. So that the teacher says: “Come here, you different culture.” So, they do it more professional, they are the ones who studied it, they know then sometimes even know the names, they say: “Jacqueline and Ahmet go sliding”, so the children immediately notice that things are going downhill. Oliver: And what would have to be done to make the teaching profession more attractive again? Olaf: It's always about qualifications! And the only and most important thing that you really have to have finished with, as a teacher, is your life. Let's not deceive ourselves, it's a difficult job. You come to a school like that as a highly motivated teacher and then you meet all of them. All unmotivated, in a bad mood and badly washed and preferably with the smell of alcohol. And then you notice that they are your colleagues! Well, you have to say, of course, many teachers are also afraid, of course. Mainly of parents, because they blame the teachers for everything, if Jerome, in eighth grade, still writes his first name with an "sch", then the parents come and say: “Yes, he has to write that way, cause he is overly gifted. And the teacher is just too stupid to realize that. I mean, you can make the teaching profession more attractive, you also can paint an old fish brightly, but it will still stink. Oliver: What a pity. Olaf Schubert, ladies and gentlemen.

Great job 👍 thanks for this. Still doesn't make it to the point, but definitely better than the subtitles in the video. Translating comedy is always difficult (see i.e. Monty Python translated to German, doesn't really work either, although it's still funny).

A major issue in Germany is our tendency to constantly complain about everything. In the past, this criticism drove us to strive for improvement. Nowadays, we've become stuck in a cycle of complaining without taking action, leading to a decline in various aspects.

The problem is that quality of education can vary ALOT from school to school all across the country. Some kids get lucky, too many don´t. Yes, I´d say average education levels are in a strong decline and have been since around the 2000 mark. And now we have a horribly dangerous combination of low education and high frequency social media influence.

A real problem with school education in the Federal Republic of Germany is the "Federal". We have 16 f...ederal states with different curricula and even partly different school systems, not enough teachers, and a rising number of immigrants. Unifying all of that would be a good idea in my opinion, but whenever that was proposed, most states rejected it. And it's really worrying to me when I have to read in the news how many kids in 4th grade (that's about age 10) can't adequately read. That means, they CAN read, but don't understand what they're reading and tell it in their own words. And, no, don't blame it on the internet. The internet has so much to offer, real good stuff, and all teachers would have to do is to show the kids where to find it. That, however, would require that the teachers knew it themselves. Alright, I have to stop here, I'm getting into a rant, I feel it.

Germany once have had a unified centraliced education system that made it easy to spread Nazi-Education into schools (centralized decision of a math book that contains tasks like "A Bomber carries 100 Bombs and flies with 300kph. The bombs can be dropped equally in 10 seconds. How long is the bombed path?" or "A disabled jewish person costs the Goverment 200 Reichsmark per day. Supply food for a german family will cost 20RM per day. How many german families could survive when the disabled wouldn't be there anymore (aka gased in Auschwitz)?". And yes these a fake tasks but similar tasks where in the books that every school has to use. Additional only literature that supports the Goverment where allowed. In biology books explains why genetically non arian people are inferior than arians where used - all proposed by the central education ministry rulled by Nazi Minister. That is one reason why education (and police) is divided into state authorities. - This makes it harder (you need at least to be the ruling Party in 16 States and the federal Goverment) to repeat this shit.

unfortunately the translation program swallows up quite often *RELEVANT* words to create a equivalent translation plus some sentences just get lined together and get cut of by swallowed words and get mixed in the further sentence. i wonder how you (mert) still find this so much interesting and funny, because with an EQUIVALENT translation you would obviously roll on the floor laughing and understand a bit better the hidden "between the line jokes/lectures" quite often i would like to "retranslate" you all the subtitles so gladly!!! anyway its a pleasure to watch your content. I don't have good moments with him. The translation was not good. Some parts that were leading to the pun or joke were missing. But it was also not very funny. So you did not miss much. He is mostly doing puns and corny jokes. I don't think he makes clever comedy. On the other hand it was some of his better performances because he was not talking lots of BS. He is very left but on the weird side. He often reminds me of people that have missed the Wall came down in 1989. I think he is the most overrated comedian in Germany.
