I live in China for many years and I will tell you on the overall they are very levelheaded people. Very very rarely did I ever hear people in China go on a ridden tirade against the United States or any country. They usually are very calm and decent with their opinions. I miss being over there, but the key to happiness is to appreciate where you are in the present.

The Chinese have an old saying: 'Without rules, there is no square and round.' In this context, 'rules' represent laws, while 'square and round' signify freedom. There is no absolute freedom in this world; freedom can only exist within certain boundaries. Otherwise, extreme freedom would undermine itself, much like the situation in the United States today, where robbery and crime have become commonplace. Even more perplexing, there are now over 100 recognised genders, which seems quite bewildering to Chinese people. Why can't Americans differentiate between genders and personalities? China is deeply influenced by Confucian culture, which values balance and harmony, and sees everything, including freedom, as relative. In contrast, Western culture often pursues extremes. Westerners frequently criticise China for its lack of freedom of speech and the inability to criticise the government freely. However, Chinese people do enjoy a considerable degree of freedom of speech. Although the government has a strict censorship system, it cannot completely prevent people from expressing their views. As long as your speech and actions don't aim to divide the country or overthrow the regime, you can generally say what you want. This is evident on the Internet, where the government quickly responds to public concerns if the criticisms are valid. China's rapid development in recent years has led to fewer voices criticising the government, not because we can't, but because the government has genuinely earned the people's support through its achievements. If the government has done nothing wrong, why should we criticise it? No system or country is perfect. Even Americans, who pride themselves on their freedom, now invent euphemisms to avoid censorship. China is certainly not as terrifying as portrayed by Western media, but it's also not as developed as some bloggers claim. China is a developing country; some parts are more advanced than the West, but many areas lag far behind. We are continually learning and progressing while seeking to establish friendly relations with the world. The West's fear of China is unnecessary. Cooperation is the only way to solve global problems because this planet belongs to all of humanity, not just one part of it.

Steve, you should evolve from street interviews and do discussion forums to make for a more intimate and genuine conversations about contemporary issues facing Asia and Asian people.

Policy is discussed by the collective wisdom, and to speak ill of a person alone is to make rumors. You can say that you have done a bad job, and you can go to the government email address to raise your opinions. Simply complaining on the Internet will not solve the problem

In private discussions about the government in China, whether you think the government or a leader thinks they are good or bad is not under anyone's control, and the same on the internet. 20 years ago, on my way home from school, I heard a lot of firecrackers and saw fireworks. I don't understand why. It's just an ordinary workday, not a holiday, and not someone holding a wedding. I only found out when I watched the news at night that a former leader in our city had died, so the citizens were very happy and set off firecrackers and fireworks to celebrate. They talked about China's voting method. In fact, most issues in China have been discussed and negotiated before voting, and the final vote is to give legitimacy to the consensus views. So it makes people feel that all votes are passed almost unanimously.

I think Chinese people have an Kantian(Immanuel Kant) understanding of freedom and inalienable rights of being human, which I believe is the right path for China moving forward. According to Immanuel Kant, real freedom is not just do whatever you like with no interference from others. Real freedom is not to be enslaved by your lust, impulse and self-indulgent. And your pursuit this Kantian version of freedom with social manners, your own sense of morality, justice and humanity.

The Xi Jin ping discussion was beyond her level. Painting Xi as a dictator is childish. Economically, and foreign policy he is being counseled by a lot of people. Wang Hu Ning, Lin Yi Fu....etc Chinese people have a lot of respect for Xi. The need for extending his term was, he is doing a very good job. It would be in China's disadvantage to switch leader at this critic moment when China is over taking US as no. 1. Please don't use your own lens to view other cultures....Chinese people don't care for a billionaires-run election.

Chinese people are taught dialectical materialism since childhood, so you can point out problems in China, but when you are targeting specific things and individuals, you need to provide evidence to prove your point. If you cannot provide evidence, you may be spreading rumors and slander. This explains why you cannot curse "someone" at will.

The funny thing is, despite you conducting the interviews in Shanghai, which is the most libbed up city (i.e. most perceptible to being "pro-west") the furthest right interviewees are still further to the left than the furthest left option in any place in the west.

I often say jokingly, that the average Indian taxi driver, or the average Chinese guy tinkering with used electronics for a living, is better politically versed than any top diplomat from the imperial core. Of course it's hyperbole, but every joke has some truth to it ;)

Little advice, Chinese point of view may differ from region to region, I would recommend interview different province or region chinese, you may find out something new.

I'm totally unsatisfied with the answer to the question "why Shanghai and not another area?" It could have been any provincial capital, even Nanjing or Hangzhou would have been more representative. As diverse as Shanghai is, there's a reason why people come to Shanghai and why they stay there, which influences their mentality and way of thinking.

Yeah, you can talk about the general situations, but cannot be specific, it's reasonalble because the specific ones needs to be proved, fair enough.

In fact, many people don't know that China really has an election system. China's election system starts with the lowest level of institutions, that is, the so-called neighborhood committee leaders or village heads in rural areas. This election is the voting right that ordinary citizens can use. This is the first level of election. Then, these people who are elected from the first level will be called representatives (you can understand them as city councilors) and are eligible to enter the city-level parliament (AKA City People's Congress), that is, they have the right to vote and elect. From this time on, the right of ordinary citizens to vote is used by these people. The city-level parliament elects the provincial parliament, the provincial parliament elects the National People's Congress, and finally, the National People's Congress elects various important national positions. This is the election process stipulated in the Constitution of the People's Republic of China. However, the difference between this election and the Western election is that you cannot conduct election speeches or raise funds. This is the general process and method of China's election. This is a great reminder of how little we know about what it takes to do another person’s job. I assumed you literally stood on the street and stopped people as they walked by to ask if they would answer a few questions. Clearly not! Thank you for all your hard work. Nah I can say stuff about Xi Jing Ping however I like in daily conversation, you just can't post these stuff on the internet. I'm not saying you'll get arrested or anything for posting a comment on internet (unless it's too extreme), but that comment will get deleted. Also there are different groups within the governement and they compete and have voting behind the scene, but once a decision is made, everyone must agree on the decision which is shown as the meme where no one dissagree. The dude LiKeQiang belongs to a different group to Xi (dude is now replaced with LiQiang tho).

There's a simple explaination for the majority of the representatives won't vote no: those topics ready for a vote are widely discussed and concluded. For controversial topics, they just won't get the chance for a vote. It's more like collective signing by voting.

this is a GREAT interview and approach you guys are doing. But the female guest here was not quite familiar with the Chinese political system as far as I could tell. And it actually brought out an interesting fact that her being a Chinese can not have a good understanding of how Chinese politics work, imagine ppl from out side of China criticizing it.

5:10 Comment on "leaders" or any other persons are bound to become biased and personal. Those are good for jokes and chit/chat in private, but lead to nowhere in open discussion. Chinese are more practical and want to focus on facts, and make suggestions that can hopefully help to solve some issues or improve the situation. I believe this is more an "eastern" way of communication vs "western" culture.

I love that the Chinese can criticize their government as freely as they want to while having that boundary which is to NOT malign any leader. What a great way to train their citizens on how to be rational and objective. How I wish it is like that in my country. Here, most people are quick to call our leaders bad names, direspecting them even to the point of posting fake news about them. And it obviously has a negative impact not just to the leaders but to our society as well. It shows more of the people's priorities in a way that the majority can't even post a valid complaint about their local government unit because they simply don't care other than tearing the politicians they hate.

Classifying China as developing country is just a technical term. Speaking from a SEA perspective, at the GDP level this is valid but the industry and scientific capabilities would China at the top 2 position in the world as advanced developed nations.

I have been studying dialectical materialism since childhood, from junior high school to high school. I think we have been greatly influenced by dialectics since childhood, which is part of the "political" exam. There is a course called politics in both middle and high school.

You guys did have 'planned actors' in some episodes not to manipulate or influence the audiences but to represent different opinions. in one of Taiwanese interview, I am for sure there is at least one planned actors in there because I know who they are and they are controversial and active on the Taiwanese social media. Based on this conversation I have a feeling both of you understand little about China nor have an accurate present view. It feels like an outdated view of China 15 years ago. Why mention rural area if not Shanghai or Beijing as if everything else are rural beside them. Shenzhen, the most technologically advanced city in the World. Guangzhou, Chengdu such an amazing laid back vibed city with its citizens living a more leisurely, Chongqing the largest populated city with insane infrastructure, Hangzhou the most beautiful scenic views I have seen, to name a few all are amazing top tier cities. China for a while now is both the no. 1 developed country, plus it still is continuing being the no. 1 developing country. There is no country that is able to catch up at present. The US is in decay for a while now and they are doing little about it. I hear nothing about how the situation is in the US, for fair comparison you should done a recent street interview in the US and ask random citizens (plus the homeless in CA) what they think about living in the US what they think about their government. If you would have combined this for analysis and review that would have been interesting.

Considering how much actual south Korean and in effect American propaganda is in english, can you really expect people to not be critical ? "North Korean soldiers react". Even you guys don't find it funny how often all that content is about talking up the US and not even South Korea? lol.

To shed some light for the hosts about Chinese public voicing out frustrations and criticisms. It was never illegal to voice out or complain, that assumption is caused by the deluded west who tries to make China sound that way. Chinese people had been doing that forever, there is always a bottom line on what is acceptable but as long as it's within the law you can do whatever and it's hard to cross that line unless you drawing attention by being extremely toxic and disruptive to the public peace. It's not that you can't say anything about Chinese leadership, it more about credibility. Firstly and culturally it's disrespectful unless it is a serious issue. Secondly, you have to be extremely credible because the president of China is much respected and has achievements on a different level. The public is more likely to ask critics "What have you done for the country?". They would sound pretty stupid otherwise after all... China is a government for the people, so all constructive criticisms are considered. Chinese don't hate anyone but we do think America is hostile towards China. That does not equate to hate, it is just about being educated and well informed.

In many Asian families, try say something bad about your father anywhere you please and guess what it would happen to you… either your mom would immediately do something (bad) to you or your dad would destroy your face, literally, because you make him look bad ;) ya know. It is just the way it is

How do Chinese think of the future of china? ... 100% hot topics. vpn is not broadly used in china, but many chinese self-medias transport western information for chinese viewers, so it's quite easy for chinese to know western opinions. But very few westerners transport information on chinese websites for westerners. Firewall instead does cause a information gap to westerners.

It doesn't matter what your system of government is - east or west. One man transgresses, entire nation gets knocked down. And he has transgressed.

We did not see how many other comments from interviewees were edited out. If only the answers deemed " intelligent" are shown and other bias comments have been eliminated, this show doesn't represent what the average Chinese think of the USA. You see, I can see bias in your show too. You are letting us see what you want us to see which is showing your ideological preferences.

I haven't seen many street interview reactions. Great job. I think I definitely prefer your sit down discussion/ interview videos. Like when you helped the Korean grandma renovate her house, the North Korean detector video, and the single dad adopting the boys videos are some notable ones . I hope you can do more interviews like that. I liked learning unique things about people. I'd definitely be interested in female soldiers, ex- convicts. Even a few catch up cases to see how some people are doing now would be great . I know I'd love to hear more about people who get deported back to their country after spending so much/majority of their life abroad. Just a few interesting topics I'd be interested in watching.
