Bit of a different style for me, but I did enjoy this so I hope you do too. Sorry for me inability to remember the books it reminded me of, my mind blanked entirely each time, but hopefully the images help instead XD

Urban fantasy is always fast and easy in the beginning. Some stay that way; Dresden and Verus do not. Verus especially surprises with its character work later down the line, and I can already sense Jacka laying the seeds for a similar escalation in characters and plot here

I’m glad to hear that for Verus that is the case. I hadn’t realised until reviewing this one that he’d done such a long other series and I have indeed heard the same of Dresden. Personally I think this kind of read doesn’t always work so well for me as I like more development early on so I’m connected, but I have read 4 or 5 of Dresden and generally enjoyed them, just nothing really tended to grip me into needing to continue. I can totally see how these series and styles work well for some people though, and if that’s you I’m glad you like the development as the story goes :)

You're a natural at this vlogging thing!! Loved hearing your thougths on this, I've been very curious about this book. I think Jacka's other series, the Alex Verus series, is actually his take on the Dresden style fantasy so it's interesting to hear you make a similar comparison to that series and this new book. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, definitely gonna keep this on my radar! 🥰

I enjoyed this style of vlog. It was nice to hear your thoughts as you were reading it. I am a Benedict Jacka fan and loved his "alex verus" series, so I pre-ordered this and read it a couple of days ago. In terms of prose and writing style I think you're 100% on target with the quick, easy read. It is very similar in style to the Dresden Files. I call it "fast-fiction", books where I can sit down at the end of the night with a few hours to spare and read a whole book. This naturally lends itself to a serialized story and that's a lot of the urban fantasy genre. I don't know that I necessarily agree with the comparisons to Rowe's "Sufficiently Advanced Magic" series. While that was very much the epitome of LitRPG, I just never got the dungeon crawling (or in Rowe's case Spire crawling :) feel like so much LitRPG though there is obviously very much the power up/level up aspect that is core to Jacka's story and Stephen's motivation. I suppose the good and bad of this "fast-fiction" style is that it's action heavy and character light. I've found in reading this style that it can take a few books in a series before characters really start getting flushed out to the reader but I think that's just the nature of action over character developments. Thanks for your insights and I hope you find an opportunity to continue the series when the next book comes out.

I’m glad to hear you’re going to pick this one up and that it fits the vibe of what you’re looking for. I think if I do continue this would be a kind of lighter easy (if dark) read for me to use between my other bigger fantasy reads. At the moment I tend to use Fantasy of Manners style or lighthearted/cosy reads as a sort of palette-cleanser between big books, and I could see that with this style if it’s more your jam. Thanks for the feedback generally, it’s always appreciated and I think the comparison to Arcane Ascension is just purely because I’ve not read much litRPG and it just reminded me of that. I suspect there’s almost definitely better comparisons than that series, but my pool for litRPG is small and I need to try more out for sure!
