Dave worked on my Panigale V2 yesterday at turtle rock and I instantly felt more confident. For all the parts and pieces I've bought in the past for all my other motorcycles, his personal tuning was by far the best investment.

I'm waiting for this guy to come over to Italy, personally meet him, give him a thousand of dollars and a hug, and have my suspensions properly tuned by someone who clearly shows love in what is doing.

Note to self: Pretty much ignore the factory manual when it comes to suspension and tires.

Prior to a tuning session with Dave I had all but given up on the standard Z1000SX suspension but his setup has changed my mind entirely. It is absolutely a joy to ride now...who knew? Dave knew!

So what was changed in this setup? Did the shock have compression, rebound adjustability or were the damping values changed inside the shock?

Hi Dave, and thanks for the awesome content. I have a GSF 650S Bandit 2008 stock suspension set up front and rear. Mostly I am commuting but i do the occasional spirited riding and even a track day just for fun. What is the single best upgrade i could go after? Front springs and oil for my weight or a rear spring ? Sadly the cost of a new rear is beyond my budget. Thanks in advance :) Cheers from Europe
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 3 года назад
The cheapest mod is springs and 20w oil for the forks. Have you done research on a surrogate OEM shock like an R6 or 03-04 CBR600 shock? Those are not expensive and there are many examples of people doing this online. That might be the budget solution you are looking for on the rear shock :)

@@catalystreactionsbw Thanks a lot for the fast reply. Truth be told I did not search much for possible donor rear shocks from other motorcycles. I guess to begin with I am going to change front oils and springs and possibly rear spring + servicing. Last question would be if you have any specific brand that you would recommend for those changes. Keep up the excellent work :)

Hi Dave, My bike is a 2018 Ducati Scrambler Mach2.0(pretty much an ICON, I am the guy who left a comment in your recent Ducati Scrambler video), I've recently trade my stock forks and shock to Andreani Misano cartridge upgraded 2015 KYB forks (linear springs) and a Ohlins DU605, both forks and and the shock were fully rebuild by authorized Andreani Group repair shop here in Taiwan and I've went around 1,200km on both of the forks and shock. I'm currently consolidating all my test riding notes and consider to book your time for a remote tuning session, however, there's one pressing question/doubt which I'll be trilled if you can help me with to check if I'm not setting things catastrophically wrong: Scenario: When I got the forks rider sag at 40mm with preload adjuster 6 turns in (11 turns total), front will still be lifted over a bump even with compression all out (rebound is prefect), no matter how I ride it solo on the street of potholes, hard braking from 80kph to 5kph, and even jump off a 20cm curb or do a light off-road, the fork are still 25mm~30mm away from bottomed out and I'm riding alerted. Meanwhile the Ohlins shock sag is at 38mm, rebounds perfectly. Action: I change the rebound to 4.5 turns in, compression still fully out and didn't touch the rebound. The front obviously sags more but I haven't measure it yet. The front feels much compliant with much less wrist jitters, with the same riding style on the same road full of potholes, same hard braking, jumping off from same curb, I can get it 15mm away from bottomed out and I'm more relaxed. Question: 1. Which is more important? Optimizing the fork travel? or the rule of thumb 30mm~40mm fork sag? 2. Is the compression oil weight being too thick or too high affects the sag and fork travel? PS. If reading these cost you too much time, please let me know too. I'll go with the paid service. Thank you Dave! Best Regards Gus

Well it's actually "two" questions instead of "one", sorry for the typo.

Hello Gus, Wait for the expert to give you a precise answer. I can though give you an advise : your 2018 Scrambler has a total fork travel of 150mm. This is a lot more than on an average street / sport bike which has more around 100 to 120mm. So calculating your sag / travel will be more accurate using percentage rather than absolute mm. A rule of thumb for street daily riding is to set rider sag to around 33% of total travel and try to use during normal riding at least 75% of available travel on the forks (excluding wheelies and jumps !). Travel left before bottom out could be reduced beyond but it is risky on street riding because you might need that reserve to brake harder and avoid a hazard without the front tire sliding because you went out of travel and overloaded it. Ride safe.

Hi Gus. In terms of optimization 1. Ergonomics, 2. Suspension travel which sets preload correctly. 3. rebound. 4. Compression. In your scenario you never changed preload? May I ask why you did not take all the preload out and set compression to 2-2.5 turns out? Sag is not an absolute - it is a guide to star with and you figure out what you need. Preload and compression must be balanced so try my recommendations. In terms of oil (2), the older oil gets the bigger the viscosity difference cold to hot. By 6-8,000kms the oil will be generally thicker but not for more than 20 minutes.

@@catalystreactionsbw Thank you for your reply! When I got the fork and shock upgrade back from the dealer, the fork preload was set at 2 turns in with rebound and compression all out, I immediately felt that the front of the bike sits very low, make me lean over to the bar. So initially I started with the preload adjuster. With only 2 turns in the fork rider sag is beyond 50mm, so I then cranked it up to 6 turns in to get the sag to 40mm with compression adjuster all out, and set the rebound to stop the pogo. But after a week I felt the fork is too harsh and will be lifted over a bump. So I then start to try setting the preload to 5, 4.5 and 4 turns in to try how it feels like, so I actually changed the preload quite frequently. What I haven’t change is the compression because I’ve never bottom out the fork once even with the preload at 2 turns in (Andreani Misano Cartridges has 145mm of travel if I’m not mistaken?) I will try your suggestions to back out all preload and put couple turns in on the compression since I’ve never tried to optimize it. (the compression adjuster has total 3.5 turns) Note: I’m currently at: fork rider sag at 46mm with preload adjuster 4.5 turns in, compression all out, rebound just right when hot. Shock sag is at 42mm. The bike feels balanced and no harsh feelings, and the tyres generally stays on the ground.

@@raphael8558 Thank you, the world is such a great place to have people like you;) Please see my reply to Dave, my fork rider sag is currently around 32%, and Im using around 70% of the travel on normal ride, but haven’t tried spirited riding yet. Thanks for your advice! Ride safe too.
