Realtalk drive with the new Comma Three!

It is my second day running the Comma Three. This is part of a drive to the office in the rain. During the drive I discuss my personal thoughts on the C3, Openpilot and Comma.ai. I truly love using Openpilot, but as with anything, there are things that can be improved.
This also shows a little of the navigation beta that comes with comma prime on the C3
I am driving my 2018 Toyota Prius Prime. I currently have my DSU disconnected so that Openpilot is controlling the gas and brake as well as the steering.

Nice video! You have a great understanding of the system and did a great job sharing for others! I have the C2 installed on my Rav4 Hybrid running Shane's fork and with some help from Erich to get me a SDSU and I love the system. It has been 100% worth the time and effort to learn and get it all setup how I like. I *do wish that Comma would integrate some sort of behind the scenes mapping, even if its not navigating, just to help with very obvious curves and turns where it could slow down just a bit and maintain control. Without the lead vehicle there my car would just drive me off the freeway overpass, lol. My C2 has driven my Rav a significant portion of my drive from Houston, TX all the way up to Boise, ID and back! Amazing technology. Whenever I show this setup to people who don't know what it is they are usually blown away. "It drives like a Tesla!" :D

Another great video, thanks for sharing. If Toyota got on board with Android Auto much earlier in the game, I probably would have never gotten into (and out of) the Accord. It's unfortunate that with all the talk about higher steering torque in Toyotas, you still have to help it through so many curves. I did not expect to see that. Furiously changing the set speed by 1 MPH per click is also unattractive. Would be nice to see Comma let you hold it for 5 MPH increments. Maybe Shane's fork reinstated that, I don't know. I really appreciate the video, though. I enjoyed the discussion. Oh, and your center console is growing on me. The car just needs more steering torque and no SDSU.
@YetNotDead
@YetNotDead 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback! The torque is actually pretty good on the highway. This car has TSS-P. Some of the newer ones have TSS2 which has more torque and a better steering angle sensor.

It's an interesting consideration - the more aggressive drivers cutting in due to longer follow distance. I'd like to see some metrics on whether or not that decreases or increases your net safety overall. One could argue that you'd rather more aggressive drivers overtake you and become someone else's problem, instead of following you close behind and potentially rear-ending you in an emergency. Yes, them getting irritated and aggressively cutting in front of you increases risk, but is it a net risk win or loss since they're now ahead of you and not your problem anymore? This reflects my own driving style and I believe it increases my safety, and I have no qualms irritating aggressive drivers if it makes me safer.
@YetNotDead
@YetNotDead 2 года назад
This is exactly why the following distance should be selectable by the driver. Some people, like you, want the more relaxed following distance. I don't have any problem with that. For me, I like a closer following distance to reduce cut-ins. Many existing ACC systems allow you to set the distance, like my Prius Prime's built in system.

heh, they got it backwards I think with the accel/braking @/to stoppage. I don't mind coming to a stop slowly/earlier (beginning to brake sooner, rather, and being smooth). Helps you coast up/to stale lights and right on thru them when cabbies are racing to/fro stop-lights.... The accel tho you are right, needs to have MUCH faster reaction time and bleed lead distance in quickly. When I did my driving school, two things stuck with me, the 'S' maneuver (to see oncoming traffic when turning left @ intersection w/ medians on either side) and 'MELT' - minimum eye lead time, they (young drivers) say ~3 second MELT is appropriate follow distance. I do ~2-2.5 but ~3 is safe, and some times this build of openpilot looking like 3-5 seconds of MELT, lol... MELT calc should be very easy with comma 3, say a light post or stop sign or reflective post on side of road, begin timer when car in front passes and stop when you hit it (front bumper reaches perpendicular 'line' from object intersecting roadway). Idk, just my $0.02 P.S digging teh wheelspin @ lights, lol :P

Hi, thanks for the video. I have a Prius prime 2020 as well. I have a couple of questions. I noticed the beep and you having to steer a bit on the curves, is it because of the lack of steering torque with the in built LDA? You mentioned disconnecting DSU (no clue what DSU is) in order to for the system to use the built in auto braking and Radar CC with acceleration. Do I need to buy something in addition to Comma3 and the wiring harness in order for it make complete use of vertical controls? It looks super tempting. Congrats on your setup!
@YetNotDead
@YetNotDead 2 года назад
The 2020 Prime has TSS-P which has the same steering torque as my 2018. So, there will be some curves you'll have to help it with. While a minor annoyance, all that it can do is still well worth it IMHO. The DSU is the Driver Support Unit. Comma and I do not recommend disconnecting it. If you leave it connected then the Prius will use the car's built in ACC (Automatic Cruise Control) for managing gas and brake and Openpilot will handle the steering. It is still a great experience in that configuration. All you need is the Comma Three and the Toyota Harness and you will have a great experience!

@@YetNotDead Yeah, of all the big three consumer ADAS systems, Toyota's has been the best to me, especially the defaults. It of course lacks the very good Openpilot lane centering, but so does the Honda system (heck, Openpilot is better at centering than Autopilot). In general I like the late model Toyota experience, the cockpit controls (stocks, buttons, steering, accelerator/decelerator pedals) is the best of any available production car; and my favourite Toyota cockpit is the Prius one (that ACC stock especially). I think it would be nice to have a cruise control policy that a) anticipates people turning from your single lane, slowing down in advance and b) is willing to take some additional risk with the follow distance, if it's clear that the car in front will be exiting the lane in time to prevent a collision at your current speed.

Year and model of Prius? I am still running an Eon on 0.7.1 and noticed you are uncomfortable with OpenPilots aggressive braking when a car is at a light in front of you. I bought the C3 but have not installed it yet, but bought it based on George's mention that this specific condition was solved with a better camera seeing the car at the light further out during the unveil of C3. For my use of Comma, this was a huge selling point. Comments?

Trial it out, for me there was not enough benefit other than that, as you can hear in the video there are a lot of "in the future", "with more AI training" so I it is more of a promise at this stage than actual benefit and I did tried at least 3 different forks to find the wining set of features but there was not enough benefit for what it costs and I opted to return it. Slowing down to compensate for the steering torque limitation is not even there yet, so I constantly had to hit the breaks and/or manually correct the wheel on not event that hard turns and it disconnected the cruise control, so even the stock one worked better in a sense that I could hit the gas and it automatically returned to the prev setting (not with the stock autopilot release).
