In a previous video ( • Smart-Bones🦴 Addon for... ) I demonstrated how to use an add on designed to simply the use of Action Constraints. This character was shown as part of the demonstration. This video is a real time recording of how I made this character, using #blender #greasepencil.
This video is not for the faint of heart, but hopefully, you can learn something about my workflow.

Oh man, 8 hours. No wonder why I try to find workflows that don't involve rigging haha 😅 Can't wait for devs to streamline the process and add nodes for rigging. Exciting times :D
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Yes Dantti. In the past I didn't really understand the advantages of node based rigging, however I've been thinking about how I could implement some sort of rig switching system, which would be helpful for 360 characters, or having different rigs for different contexts, and I realise that nodes will solve it all beautifully. Very exciting. Thanks for the comment :D

Thank you so much for posting the whole workflow! I've generally understood the gist of how all this works, but it really helps to see the whole process. Is it possible to use the same workflow for the head turn for a body turn or should that be it's own rig?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Thank you for your kind words. Regarding the body turn, it depends on how far the body needs to turn, if it's a subtle shift left and right, then this work flow should be good, however, if you need them to turn further, you would probably be better off with a separate rig. I hope this is helpful :)

thanks for this man. truly amazing! but how are you clicking the bones though while in weight paint mode?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 9 месяцев назад
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Good question, to click through the bones while in weight paint mode, you select the armature object, shift select the Grease Pencil object, and then enter weight paint mode. This will make it so that you are simultaneously in weight paint mode for the Grease Pencil, and pose mode for the armature. Then you can just CTRL+click on each bone, and that will select the bone, and the vertex group associated with it. Make sure you're using the correct version of Blender, as there was recently a version where this no longer worked with Grease Pencil, but I believe that has been fixed in the more recent versions. Thanks for the comment :)

Hey I was trying to make a 2d character rig in blender grease pencil. I was wondering for when drawing the assets if I should use grease pencil, or some other program to draw and then port the assets to blender. Grease pencil is just kinda fickle to draw in and I was wondering if there was some advantage by drawing just in grease pencil
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there. Both methods work, and have their advantages. The advantage of using Grease Pencil is it is in a vector format, so resolution is not a problem, and the deformation can be easier to deal with. The advantage of importing assets is that it's easier to make characters with more texture, also lighting and shadows are easier. Ultimately you decision should come down to what visual style you're going after. I made a video that shows the importing assets workflow if you're interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ChqSqDGCTRA.html

Wow! I am sorry for asking a seemingly silly question, but I am trying to recreate your older tutorial on 2D head animation. However, I have a plan to make a full-body character. Should I skip the first four tutorials and start from scratch as you did in this video? Or is it possible to connect the body to the head later? I apologize for this seemingly idiotic question, but I am just starting to learn 3D (and Blender). Although I am an editor and understand how animation works in AE.
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 6 месяцев назад
Hi there, it is possible to connect the head to the rest of the body later. It will take adjustmwnt of the rig, for example the root bone will need to control the whole rig not just the head, but it is possible. Letmeknow if I can help in any way! :)

is it possible to create a full body turnaround like moho and toonboom?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there, sorry for taking so long to respond. At the moment it is possible, by building several different rigs for the different views, and switching between them in the animation, but it's not as intuitive as Moho or Toonboom. However there is a new tool in development, where rigging will become node based, which will make this much easier.

@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel 9 месяцев назад
Hi, sorry for the late response. The keyboard shortcut is just ALT+click. In the video, I probably, pressed shift first accidentally, which probably caused some confusion. Keep in mind that the menu will only show up if, at the location of your cursor, there are overlapping objects or bones. I hope this is helpful.

Do you happen to use blender 3.5? Because I'm having problems with grease pencil rigging in that version. Whenever I have the rig and the gp object selected and I go to weight paint, I can't pick a bone by crtl left clicking like I used to be able to.
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there, I made this character in 3.4.1, though I have been using 3.5, but hadn't noticed this strange bug. Though looking into it now, I can confirm that this is an issue with 3.5, and that it works correctly in 3.4.1. I've reported it as a bug, #107678 The way I usually go about weight painting, is selecting each vertex group manually, this is why I didn't notice, however I really should transition to this method.

Im making one inspired by your video, now when i move the bone, in pose mode, the grease pencil moves more and passes the bone. This is normal?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there. This kind of thing happens when there is a loop of dependencies, so either through parenting or constraints bone A moves based on bone B, which moves based on Bone C which moves based on Bone A. There are some other way this doubled transform can happen. Feel free to send me your blender file by email and I can try and give some more specific help. You can find my email at ru-vid.comabout

@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi, there has been one other person who had difficulty installing the addon, and the reason for that is other addons tend to be bundled in a zip file, which can be installed directly, however in my case, the addon only has one python file, but the zip file contains some other things, so you need to unzip the file, and install the python file. I hope this is helpful, let me know if you have any more questions.

Any plans of doing a 360 rig?
@SketchySquirrel
@SketchySquirrel Год назад
Hi there, no currently I don't have any plans for that. The reason for this is that, other than being a technical achievement, a 360 rig is not a good use of time in a production. We would be better to create several different rigs from different angles, and find a way to switch between them at the right moment. There will soon be a new feature, node based rigging, that will make switching between such rigs much easier, but in the mean time it is still possible, and a smooth 360 rigs with no switching, is not worth the effort. Thanks asking :D
@mitchellwoodin6686
@mitchellwoodin6686 Год назад
@@SketchySquirrel Hmm that interesting. Do you have any resources showing how these rigs are used in general tv production? I've recently been watching Star Trek The Lower Decks so I'm thinking about how their rigs would be constructed. (obviously knowing you wouldn't have any specific insight into that show).
