Has music just not sounded the same to you since Miami Vice went off the air? Then you're in luck! The synth drums in Kong bring analog drum sounds back to your music. Most analog sounds these days are sampled, meaning the sound you load is the sound you've got. In this micro tutorial you'll see how easy it is to make wonderfully tweakable analog synth drums and assign them to your pads.

First of all...there's no such thing as a dumb question. All questions are awesome because it means we're all asking questions and learning and getting better. The day we start to suck is the day we stop wondering how to get better. :) To answer you, what you're talking about is called "Quantizing" and if you look at the Tool Window you'll see that you can shift notes after you play them in so that they're on beat. It's too much to describe via youtube but it's in the documentation. Good luck!

no matter what other software comes out you guys just keep coming with innovations to an already limitless and brilliant tool!! I still haven't even caught up with the possibilities of earlier versions and now with Reason 5 the bar has reached the clouds and beyond, absolutely stunning...!!

Since upgrading from Reason 4 to 9 I honestly have been somewhat flummoxed by Kong and it's reason for existence... no pun intended. Redrum has been my drummer of choice but now I can definitely see the advantages and potential of Kong. Off to the woodshed!

@farmertml Absolutely. In the realistic category, Kong has amazing layered sample support via the NN-Nano module (upcoming tutorial) and the Physical Modeling modules (upcoming tutorial).

@SyncrisisVideos The NN-Nano module has a section called "Amp Env." In it is the same decay/gate switch from the Redrum. If you switch to the gate (switch in up position) and turn the decay all the way down... then the sample will only play while a MIDI note is on, just like on the Redrum. If you want to do it with Synth drums you could great a two-pad mute group. One pad leave blank, the other set up your synth drum sound. Just tap the blank pad to gate off the decay of the synth kick.

@deanc2000 Kong does not have a step sequencer. That's correct. However, you can very easily hook the redrum up to Kong and use the step sequencer of the Redrum to trigger the sounds in Kong.

@SyncrisisVideos You can't control EVERY parameter of Kong and I'm no programmer but it has something to do with fitting into the MIDI spec. I do believe you can access more parameters if you put Kong inside a Combinator. As for your question about Kong gating. I asked our forum and they came up with a really cool patch that does the Kong synth gating I described using mute groups but using note on/off without the need for pressing a toggle off switch. Message me if you want it sent to you.

What note does the pitch for each drum synth sound start on? So you'd assign the Kick Synth Module to Pad 1 then Tune it using the pitch knob. What note number is the Pitch knob centered on. So if you detune it by 2 then would this mean that if it is, lets say, centered on middle C then would that equate to detuning it by two semitones to A#? Wouldn't it be great if there were note letters shown when tuning instead of numbers, or a choice between the two?

@spiderlelo If you want VST, use Reason under a host app that supports VST using ReWire. Record on the other hand is the app that may consider allowing VST. I honestly think the clean approach with just Record+Reason sets interesting creative limitations. BUT it will prevent me from ever using Record as my primary sequencer.
@ReasonStudios
@ReasonStudios 12 лет назад
do you mean level as in volume controls? Yes it has level control for each pad as well as a master level. Is that what you're asking?

@PropellerheadSW Thanks for the work-around! I have a bonus question: is there currently any way to control drum dynamics features (like the "shell and snare" and "edge tune" rotaries in the Physical Model snare drum) within a combinator programmer? Currently, it seems like there isn't. If not, are there plans to add this feature in a patch update? Or were controls like these and the kong fx rotaries (beyond first two) left out of the combi programmer on purpose (performance?). Thanks again.

I just got Reason 5 and its awesome BUT i think i must be the 12,890,765 th person saying this VST PLUGINS!!!!!! i love reason really i do but adding third party plug ins will open up doors of possibilities, and i know there are people there that agree with me. if this can get 300 thumbs up, then honestly Propellerhead needs to start listening to its buyers...can i get a ooh ooh??

does anyone recommend a good usb midi controller to use with kong?
@SyncrisisVideos
@SyncrisisVideos 14 лет назад
@PropellerheadSW is there any way to set the Kong drums to play in gate mode (similar to decay/gate mode switch in Redrum) so that samples only decay for the length of a midi note. I understand you can toggle/automate the decay rotary, but I like to have a set decay, and control stutters with midi note-length. I've tried controlling pads with a gate-enabled redrum cv, but unlike other reason synths, the Kong doesn't gate with this method.

I hope this isn't a dumb question, but when you played the end result beat, how did you add all those effects and keep it in beat? I'll record kick and snare, but when i try to add hi-hat, it's totally off.. is there someway you can play it bad and make it come out all in beat? Thanks
@deanc2000
@deanc2000 14 лет назад
So Kong does not have a step sequencer, like redrum, but you have to play the pads that you assigned the sounds to?

I don´t understand why you compare Kong with Thor? Should compare it with Redrum
@SendyTheEndless
@SendyTheEndless 10 лет назад
Because Thor is complicated and set up to create any sound, making it sometimes overly complex for getting drum sounds quickly (and also quite difficult for people who aren't very good at drum synthesis).
@gnosjo
@gnosjo 10 лет назад
Redrum is a sample player. Kong has synthesis (like Thor).

Why not make a clip in the Reason sequencer, let it loop while playing and then simply add (or remove) notes as you seem fit? Such a clip can be easily (ab)used as a step sequencer too.
