Welcome back to Reborn with Me!
Today is an exciting day because we're finally wrapping up the painting! Whooohooo! That's right, we are 20% done with our doll (rooting is the other 80%). LOL
This custom order required Matte Skin Texturing. So today, I'm going to show you how to create a lifelike baby skin texture on your reborn doll using Matte Varnish and Genesis Heat Set Paints.

I just finished my very first reborn and although the paint mixing was hard with the minimal color range that came with my kit he turned out amazing! You asked us to share some of our successful experiments... I used a special sauce made from thinning medium, genesis heat set satin, moist baby skin, odorless thinner and just a tad of blushing color. It turned out really well. No hint of crusty ash. Now on to the micro rooting 😬 yikes! Thank you again for sharing all your expertise

hi, first I would like to thank you for all this wonderful information. as for the matt varnish is it absolutely necessary to use because i have varnished entire kit with it and only part of the leg will get flaky. or the entire doll will or sometimes not at all. its always hit or miss. and its so annoying and very time-consuming. i read somewhere cant really recall where, but someone said that with genesis heat set paint. you really dont need the varnish. oh and it does it with satin varnish as well.

Do you avoid the lips and the nails when applying the varnish? Or do you put the varnish on the lips and nails smoothly and then apply the glaze on top of that? I want to make sure it is sealed properly, but I'm afraid if I apply to varnish to lips and nail, then the glaze won't stick.

Hello , sorry for my english ... I wanted to know if it is necessary diluted matt varnish ? I use myself of Satin Varnish and 08 flesh ... Should I diluted with white spirit ? Thank you for your reply...

Thank you for these tutorials I love them and they are so helpful but I would like to know if you have a tutorial on dark complexions. I have seen many tutorials and how to' son other complexions I've used a few of them I am new to reborning and although I think my dolls look pretty good I wold like them to be great I am a visual student I learn best by watching. I would love to watch any tutorial on dark complexions if you know of any.

Hi Kim, do you use also make up brushes ........i do and they work perfect , and are not so costy !! i bake the skin texture twice , this is very nesesary .... thank you for sharing !! i love your video,s !! HUGS!

hi can u mix the skin colors between them? for example the flesh 02 or 3 with the 08 to make it darker or lighter?btw thanks for the weight calculator, works great on excel but can not make it work online, in case i want to use my tablet or hae no my laptop with me =( if u can help me ....ty

+Inge Carrein Thank you for your note. Heat-set oil paint that has been fully-cured is permanent and water-proof. Sealing in addition to that can provide additional scratch resistance, stain protection and skin texturing, if desired.

If you seal the baby, and after curing still have some shiny spots - is it ok to touch those spots up and re-cure it?

+Patricia Randolph I let it dry overnight if I'm not in a hurry. A few hours should give the varnish enough time to act up. LOL

Yes, I have friends who successfully use Genesis varnishes over air dry paint. :)

Question! Can you do skin texturing on the head before rooting? Do you seal the rest after you're done rooting?

+Jessica Winslow I texture the whole kit before I root. You can root right through the varnish with no issue if it has cured properly. If you notice it chipping off while you root, pop the head back in the oven and cure for another cycle.

My baby is getting all types of blue and dark marks and I know the paint is fading. it's not supposed to. please help. I don't know what to do and I really like this doll. he is the jack by Tina kewy sold out limited edition number 71 if that helps

+Azelyn V I'm sorry to hear about that. Stains and fading are both symptoms of paint that has not been sealed with a clear varnish. Your reborn doll artist would know best whether that is, in fact, the case. To avoid future stains, try to keep your baby out of contact with dark colored materials (dark fabric, newspaper ink, makeup, etc...) as vinyl loves to absorb color from things like that.

Hi Kim! Another question for you: I'm not 100% happy about my skin texturing. I had to bake a couple of times to get it to cure and some of it came off. I can't really see it. At this point I've already rooted all my hair and sealed eyebrows. Would it hurt to redo the texturing or just leave it be?

+Jessica Winslow Skin texturing is typically pretty hard to see. You can see it best by how the skin reflects bright light. At what temperature are you baking? I get best results if I cure at a relatively low temp (250) for a really long time (15 min). If you don't like the sheen on your eyebrows, you can try an acrylic matte to touch up those areas. Or you can use the Genesis to matte the eyebrows and set it with a heat gun so you don't damage the rooting.

+CustomDollBaby.com I was curing at 275 at first but now I do it at 250. I just had put it on a bit thicker and bake a couple times. As for the eyebrows, I don't think I used the best mohair. I pulled some of the fly-aways out and tried rooting a bit flatter

Jessica Winslow Yes, the quality of the mohair does matter for eyebrows. Yearling and kid give the best results because they are so much finer and softer than other kinds of mohair.

lilvampiress08 A brush should suffice mot of the time. If you want a raised beauty mark or mole, make sure you add some thick medium extender to your color so it will stick up. :)
