Sean's Tacoma has seen numerous sets of shocks to this point
- ‪@bilsteinUS‬ 5100 ride height adjustable shocks
- ‪@FOXFACTORY‬ 2.0 Coilovers
- ‪@iconvehicledynamicstv‬ Stage 8 CDCV Coilovers, RXT, Bumpstops, etc
- OME BP51
We also have another Tacoma on staff that has seen Bilstein, Icon, and Fox 2.5 DSC shocks. We've taken plenty of rides in ‪@KingOffRoadShocks‬ mid-travel and long-travel setups.
We know the Tacoma platform from the daily driver, hard off-roader, and trail loving overlander perspectives. We tailor our recommendations to each of these drivers, and while there is plenty of overlap with what shock packages can accomplish, we believe features like compression and rebound adjustment is well-suited for the trail runner and overlander specifically.

Good options, big price difference, BP51 for the trails and/or gear loadouts, 8112s for the faster environments

Hello , I have the same bp-51 on my toyota land cruiser 120 and i am very happy with them. I will have to tell you at the top of the rear shocks there is a screwdriver hole so that use a screwdriver in the hole that keeps the shock still when we adjust it and does not turn around and wrinkle the tank hose. I hope it helped😊
@ShockSurplus

Yep, we found out that secret after this video, thank you for the feedback, glad you're liking the BP51s

Oh pretty recent, we're behind on testing dobinsons, but very soon!

I have the same issues with adjusting them. But also they are pretty awesome otherwise! They make a huge difference on long dirt road drives. I was told to cycle the adjusters regularly. I try to do it every oil change. Not sure if it helps. Not sure what to do when they need to be rebuilt. It’s free, but then I can’t use my truck! -M
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 7 месяцев назад
Yup the adjusters are a little bit of a pain, but you are doing the right thing by cycling them on occasion. That way they can not freeze. We find these usually go about 75k miles before needing service, but the best tell is the old butt dyno. If they start to lose performance, get them in.

I have them on my LC200. Dampening is great, rebound is too strong(even at lowest setting), and adjustments are pretty difficult to make unless my vehicles weight is taken off of the shocks(particularly the rear shocks). So for my rig, it’s been a matter of finding comfortable medium and leaving that way instead of adjusting on the fly. Really bummed out. Could just be me or my particular set of shocks tho. Will however say that I’ve heard about this same issue before.
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Год назад
really? that's odd, we found that rebound at the lowest setting really affected the vehicle. Is that happening more in the front or rear? lots of gear or running empty?

Thank you for detailed video. As I spend 90% of my time on tarmac roads vs low/medium speed off-road trails, I’d be wanting a firm ride for betting handling. Do you think I could achieve this with the level of adjustment? Cheers, Steve.
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 7 месяцев назад
Most definitely! They have compression and rebound adjustment so you should be able to minimize a lot of sway while still making sure it rides great.

may I ask if the OME UCA provides more clearance for the reservoir hose for 4runners? I installed the BP-51 got from you this week but the factory UCA is dangerously close/in contact with the hose. The hose has the tendency to aim up, but it has to route underneath the UCA, so the bottom of the UCA surface is always pressing against the hose
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 9 месяцев назад
Yup, the OME and just about every aftermarket upper control arm has more room. People have gotten away with the stock UCA, but as you are finding it certainly is not recommended

Great video, I just bought these 51s for the front of my Toyota Tundra. Is the spring rated for a heavy front bumber? Will i still be able to get 3" of lift?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 4 месяца назад
The standard springs included should be more than enough for most bump and even winch combinations, however we do find they are much happier at the 2-2.5" lift range. Since they are position sensitive, they are a little more sensitive to lift height as they perform best when they are in the meat of the main ride zone.

@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Год назад
Dobinsons have dual speed compression adjustment which the BP51 doesnt have, but the BP51 have Internal Bypass that the Dobinsons doesn't have. With that in mind the Dobinsons may be suited better for more high speed stuff, while comfort advantages may be with the BP51 because of the internal bypass and creating that cushier ride zone. Dobinsons does have more adjustment intervals on both the rebound and compression side, whereas the BP51 are confined to 10 settings each. Dobinsons also have service kits to rebuild their shocks, while the BP51 are serviceable only by ARB at this time (April 2023).

What's the best front and rear settings for these shocks?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Год назад
No real way to give a recommendation without more specifics such as terrain, speed, amount of gear being carried. There's a guide at the bottom of this post that outlines how each setting affects driving behavior www.shocksurplus.com/blogs/news/old-man-emu-bp-51-tacoma-review If you're not going that fast, lowering the rebound helps with comfort equally as much as lowering the compression. So you're allowing the suspension to move the most with both reb/comp at their lowest settings.

@ShockSurplus

Heck ya! There probably is not a "high end" coilover and shock package that can be set up for more comfort on your daily drive.

What is your recommended rebound and compresión for higth speed on bp51 read en front please!
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 20 дней назад
i usually have compression way up, rebound in the middle for the front. On the rear compression will depend on how much weight i've got in the back, but usually pretty firm, rebound typically less than the front. If we're going fast, we like to let the rear pack a bit

I would really like to see a video about shocks made for comfort best ride on normal paved roads where people really do drive everyday because after viewing many of your videos you only keep talking about mountains and rocks how about us who just are regular people doing normal driving ?? and we don't go on mountains and climb rocks . But would still like nice riding shocks...
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 6 месяцев назад
This and most of our other reviews you have probably been watching are of off road oriented suspension systems, so we are really reviewing them with their intended purpose in mind. The vast majority of upgraded suspension packages for trucks and SUVs are designed for off road use, as that is what the overwhelming majority of people with those vehicles are upgrading their suspension for. That is not to say these and most any other kit for a Tacoma will not improve ride and handling on the road, but "regular people" doing "normal driving" do not need $3000 coilover and shock kits. In fact in most cases they are better off keeping it stock and getting a nice high quality OE replacement like a Bilstein 4600 when and if their stock shocks wear out under their ownership. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nTKEL0Xu7ZY.htmlsi=C-xg7tFwwnMEp488

I'm in the process of deleting my air spring and struts on my 2009 Lexus gx470 . looking all over you-tube and the internet for some help and advice but all they talking about is LIFT MOUNTAINS AND ROCKS . Would like you to advise me on some replacement so i can get the best ride on normal driving . Thanks

@ShockSurplus 6 месяцев назад
Bilstein 4600s would be a perfect choice if you are just looking to keep it stock and drive it on the street. The only thing you will need is a 2003-2009 4Runner or 2007-2009 FJ Cruiser front strut mount

Dobinson MMR (MRA) vs BP51
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 9 месяцев назад
On the books for sure, but we will say it is going to be hard to beat the internal bypass design of the BP51 in the comfort department. The Dobinsons might take the cake in handling though since they have an adjuster just for low speed compression.
